I’m Alexis Rhodes, but you can call me Jazminne Starr, indie author, and this is my story. I moved to Seattle for gray skies, rainy days, and hopeful for inspiration. Suffering from writer’s block, a broken heart, and a looming deadline, I was desperate. I got the bright idea to write a sports romance. A hockey romance. Easy, right?
Little did I know my desperate attempt for my next bestseller would lead me to a hockey game that would change my life forever. A change that came in the form of the superstar Captain and Center of the Seattle Vipers Hockey team, Torrance “Tor” Bailey.
With Tors help as my advisor in all things hockey, I completely immersed myself in pucks, sticks, ice, and without realizing it, him. What started out as a mission to write my next book turned into so much more. My story, with all its ups and downs, became our story.
I took our story, shared it with the world and lost everything.
This is a hockey romance. But it was never about the game. We were playing for keeps and didn’t see it coming until it was too late. But it’s never too late for a happily ever after. I write about them all the time. Surely I can turn my words into reality. Because I would never forgive myself if he didn’t forgive me.
For Pucking Keeps is a standalone hockey romance, book one of The Seattle Vipers series.
You may know me by Dreia Wells! Writer of Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy. I am originally from Houston, Texas but I have live in England for over 13 years now. D. Sparks is my alter ego!! Writer of Contemporary and Dark Romance. Join me in the flames!!
I am absolutely in love with this world and these characters. Jaz (Alexis) and Tor stole my heart from the moment this book opened, and they just never let go of it. I think most of us have felt Jaz’s self-doubt and experienced similar feelings of unworthiness, so it was beautiful to watch Tor loving her through every moment of it. There was something very sweet about the instant attraction between these characters. I think the slower burn as they got to know each other also helped to get, at least this reader, deeply invested in them as a couple. I love hockey fiction when it’s done well, and this was done very well. Bring on the next book! I received a complimentary advance copy of this book from the author.
With the rise of sports romance, I held uncertainty if I would fall under the growing fandom. Books started sprouting here and there like wild flowers from names I do not recognize around my usual circle of people I enjoy reading. For those of you who know the broad spectrum that I read, I am more wary with contemporary because for me, personally, it can be hit or miss.
I think the last contemporary sports book I read was The Wall of Winnipeg and Me. But that was football.
Why the sudden fascination with hockey?
But along came the rumor that D Sparks was going to write a hockey romance and I leaned toward my screen, following every single teaser and piece of bait she put out for me. *clears throat* I mean, for us.
The little minx also likes to throw out ARCs like a fly fisherman--I never know if I'll swim fast enough to catch it. Clever woman.
BUT ALAS! I got my hands on the beaut and eagerly began devouring, happily putting my life on pause.
It started nice, cozy, subtle, like leisurely floating on a calm lake... but quickly ramped up to the point of making me fan myself with the front of my shirt and my face getting closer and closer to my reader to make sure I read what I read... and perhaps I should read it again, you know, for research purposes.
Don't get me wrong, I still consider this a cozy by the end of the amazing tale. D Sparks left me wanting to know more, not only about the couple in this book, the the potential other couples and side characters! (I really need Ridley's book next!) I appreciate the fact that I could tell the author researched hockey before she wrote because I could mentally envision every scenery, every turn of the skates... as well as every brawl with delicious clarity. But really, it was the flaws in each character, the relatability that pulled you in.
The hot scenes were scorching, and the heartbreaking scenes were heart wrenching. I had to slide into her DMs a few times to say "WHY?! HOW DARE HE? HOW DARE SHE?", I'm sure, much to her dismay. (I REGRET NOTHING) D Sparks has a talent in pulling your emotions into whatever storm she creates/weaves while leaving us thanking her for getting battered and bruised in the process.
D Sparks was my first hockey read, and I don't regret it one bit. Now, all other hockey books will be compared to this standard in my mind if I so choose to continue down this contemporary sports reading path. And the fact that the characters are BIPOC? *chef's kiss* and written by a BIPOC author? *celebrates*
*I rank this book 5 stars for the audience it was intended for - cozy sport romance readers. I rank this book Cupcake and Sprinkles on my personal darkness scale.*
Beautiful flipping cover + lost little me with all of the hockey terms = 😶
That cover works so well for me! Torrance being intrigued with Alexis because she is wearing his jersey is sweet. Alexis' ex is a walking example of "I know I messed us up, but the fact you can walk away or attempt to walk away and not forever be sad by what I did, I do not like it". Petty and spiteful. Getting in her business when it has nothing to do with him! But the way Alexis and Tor get back together was so freaking sweet I cried a little bit!!
I usually ditch a book once I spot the instalove trope, especially in a contemporary romance novel, but this standalone was honestly the cutest thing I've read in a long time. I never thought I would say this, but the instalove trope made it even better. There is so much to love about "For Pucking Keeps". It has the perfect mix between ice hockey and romance, with two main characters at the center of their story and nicely mixed with some interesting side characters and a bit of their stories (to come). I love the fact that our fmc is an indie author, and how relatable the author made her story. Really; it weren't just te characters who fell instantly in love with each other; I was there right alongside them.
While the surface story is a lovestory between the captain of an ice hockey team and an indie author, there is a lot more beneath the surface that adds some interesting thoughts to this standalone. I don't think I've ever read a book where the struggles of indie authors are written down so clearly, and what the pressure of fans, social media, ... mean to them as well. It never becomes a way to complain or anything, it just feels like a very realistic portrait of life as an indie author, and I really loved it. There's a vulnerability to these main characters, which only makes their love story more beautiful in my opinion.
I fell in love with these characters and their story, and now I can't wait to see some of these side characters find their HEA.
Who doesn't love a hockey romance?! However this is a whole new spin on things with our MFC being an author and I loved it! Definitely something to set it apart. Jaz and Tor start their professional friendship with her squeezing him for info about the hockey world to help assist in her writing but who can resist a hot mother pucker on the ice?! Soon things heat up, drama hits, the spice goes wild and Jaz gets to experience the HEA she loves for her stories 💓 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🌶🌶🌶

Jaz is an author with a nasty case of writers block. She's got a hockey romance due and has 0 clue about the sport. Hot off an explosion of her previous relationship, the last thing she needs is love like she writes. But wepl played plans, exs and puck bunnies be damn Tor isn't letting her go that easy!
Tor is 'The Mountain' tall dark and FUCKING FINE!!! He is untouchable unmoving and uninterested in love. Until Jaz sits her pretty ass next to his team mates sister. The man FALLS AND FALLS HARD AF! Like SIR is true perfection!
Jaz and Tor are EVERYTHING. This man's mouth is literally perfection. The things he said the way he used her body and gave her ALL she needed. Fuckkkk!!!!
Yes, there's a third act breakup. And it almost killed me. But I'd do it again!!!!
I am not a sports person. I don't watch them so why in the heck would I want to read about them? At least that was my way of thinking. However, I've been expanding my book horizons a bit, and what better time to give a hockey romance a try than when author Dreia Wells is writing as D. Sparks. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised.
These are some great characters. The side characters are all super interesting and I want more than a few of them to have their story told. But back to the main characters, Jaz (aka Alexis) and Tor are soulmates, there's no other word for them. The instant, buzzing connection, the easy flow between them, with banter and playful moments all scream soulmates. Seeing Jaz and Tor fall for each other reminded me a little bit of the paranormal romances that I love so much.
I love that Jaz is an author of smuttmance, you know, smutty romance. Her being an author was a major part of the story and one of the few reasons why I gave this book a try. There were a lot of interesting details, I like seeing things from an author's perspective, and how their work and life collide. One of my favorite moments was when one of Tor's teammates started fanboying over Jaz's work, it was excellent. What I wasn't expecting was that I enjoyed the team camaraderie, seeing what they are like when it's just them, no fans, no press.
Another thing that I just loved about this book was all the mixed media. I'm just a sucker for it in books, it just adds more to the story. This one had pretty much everything too. There are text messages, Instagram posts with comments included, newspaper articles, and book snippets. About halfway I started to feel nervous and it all goes back to that fabulous prologue that had me guessing about what the heck happened. I was just waiting for the other shoe to drop and boy did it. I don't think I was ever so tense in my life but the last bit of the book more than made up for it.
Who knew I would enjoy a hockey romance? Not me but For Pucking Keeps was a very enjoyable read. Am I going to start watching sports now, absolutely not but I am open to reading about them thanks to D. Sparks.
Professional Hockey MF Romance Romance Writer Curvy FMC He Falls First POC Main Characters Mature Age
For Pucking Keeps is a standalone hockey romance by D Sparks.
Jaz Starr is a romance writer starting her life over in Seattle after a devastating emotional discovery. She’s funny, flirty, curvy, and caring. She has a habit of running from her problems instead of facing them but that’s an issue for future Jaz to deal with. Right now, she just needs to write her latest book, a hockey romance. Too bad she knows nothing about the sport.
Tor Bailey is the Captain of the Vipers, Seattle’s professional hockey team. He sees Jaz when her bestie drags her to a game and knows his life has been forever changed. This isn’t in his game plan for this season. He has to devote all his time and energy to getting his team to the Stanley Cup but he can’t get the gorgeous, curvy woman wearing his jersey out of his mind.
When the two finally meet up, the romance is heart melting and hot enough to melt the proverbial ice. Miscommunication and long distance are a struggle, issues from the past rear their ugly heads, can the two avoid crashing into the boards?
High marks for the amazing secondary characters as well. A fun read.
I hate writing reviews. There is so much I want to say but find nothing I say is good enough or does justice for the book I wish to review. This is my curse! I hate writing. Reading is easier! Haha. So, anyway, D Sparks is back with another story. How on earth does she do it? I can't even write a review! It's a sports romance. And insta love. And oh my, squeeworthy it is! I also found I am a fan of hockey after reading this, that is how well written it was. What I really appreciated was how I could connect with the main characters and my emotions were engaged! I had moments where I was in disbelief, flushing from the spice, and awe at a well delivered happily ever after. The best part is we're introduced to characters that will have their own story coming. And I can't wait to read their stories too! So if you enjoy insta love, hockey, spice, and HEA then do read a copy as soon as you can.
This was such an amazing and thrilling love story. The way it was writen made it feel so real, the real life struggles of a writer.
She hides behind her pen name and runs from the the pain of a failed relationship, a man who was never worthy of her love.
Love at first sight when she least expected it. Was it luck or fate that brought the two of them together. The man of her dreams she happens to be wearing his jersey on her first hockey experience.
I fell madly in love with Tor too, he is sexy, charming and perfect. He is a talented hockey player, but he is such a powerful and charming character.
He opens his heart up for his girl, even after she used their love story for her new book he still never gave up on her.
Oh my poor heart didn't know what was going to happen, what a journey they went on to finally get their happily ever after.
Absolutely loved the story and the characters in this book (apart from the jerk ex but we wont talk about him lol)
For Pucking Keeps by D. Sparks is book one in The Seattle Vipers. It’s a standalone just in case you’re wondering. I was looking forward to reading this book after seeing what the book was about. I read it relatively fast as this had everything I could have wanted from a hockey romance. It had funny, sweet and a dash of spice. I really enjoyed reading about the setting of the book, I’ve never been to Seattle but after reading this I feel like I’ve seen it. But what I loved the most was the characters of Tor and Alexis. I absolutely loved Tor, he was very swoon-worthy. I also felt that I could relate to the curvy aspect of the main FMC… so any book having that equals a vote from me. I thought the writing was really well done with a plot that just kept on giving. It kept me hooked from being to end. Also the world description was done so well I felt as if I was there. Overall I really enjoyed the experience of this book and I highly recommend it.
Jaz and Tor had an instant soulmate connection. Tor decided that she was his supernova and he was all in even though the timing was horrible. He’s the captain of the hockey team Seattle Vipers. His goal is to lead his team to the Stanley Cup. Jaz is a romance author who’s trying to piece her life back together after catching her male best friend Mace balls deep in her fiancé Shaun. She’s not sure she can lower her walls down to find the real HEA she deserves.
This was full steam ahead. I enjoyed the chemistry between the characters and the side characters. We get enough of the side characters info throughout the story to set up the next book in this series.
We get lots of drama from all directions but our couple carries on until Tor learns of Jaz’s betrayal.
Loved this! Felt so real that it could’ve been a true story.
Alexis (Jaz) and Tor were such a great pair. True love at first sight. Tor comes into her life at a time when she needs to be healing, but he really does help her. He helps her find her strength again along with her words to write again. But everyone knows, you can’t rely on someone else to keep you whole. That’s what’s so beautiful about this story, the true healing Alexis has to go through and recognizing that she needed to do that was very real.
All the side characters in this book add so much humor and personality to the story.
Had a blast reading this story and definitely recommend
Hockey is the only sport I actually enjoy, so when I find a hockey romance read, I am all over it! For Pucking Keeps was a great start to this new series The Seattle Vipers. Indie romance author Jaz is starting anew! With an idea for a new book, she needs to do a bit of research first with hockey. Attending one of Seattle's hockey team's games ends up chasing her life forever. In steps the captain Tor. He has plans to get his team to the Stanley cup, but he didn't plan was to meet someone who would completely change his outlook on what is most important. The romance between these two was heart fluttering, and I am addicted to these characters! I cannot wait for book 2!
If I have said it once I’ve said it a million times, I’m deep in my hockey era. And this book scratched that itch! I would consider Tor and Jaz’s relationship and “instalove” which sometimes isn’t my favorite, but totally works in this instance. Heck, maybe it made it even better! The depth of these characters is unmatched. The pressures Jaz feels as a new romance author are so real and deep. And the way that Tor talks to Jaz….um wow. This story was so fun and enjoyable!!
And now that I’m done with this book, I need all the details on every other person mentioned in this story. I need to know about side characters, about possible future relationships…all the things!!
This was a very different hockey romance, with Jaz/Alexis being an author that is writing about it when she meets Torrence. It's insta-love between them, but they need to overcome some hurdles before they can find their HEA. I found it interesting to integrate the whole writing a book process into the story, from writers block to signings and everything in between. I loved how Tor and Alexis were both so in love and felt so complete when they were together. This book was an emotional rollercoaster. There were also some interesting side characters, that will hopefully get their own stories in the near future. A great read.
I went into this a bit blind but I heard hockey romance and was instantly sold. What I didn’t expect was for my attention to be captured within the first few pages and to be held in a chokehold! This author has a way with words and I felt seen for the first time as a bipoc reader as there are subtle cultural nodes which I really resonated with. This is one cosy sports romance with a bit of drama, a lot of banter and when the spice hits it gets hot! Tor and Jaz are likeable relatable characters, love the energy of these characters.
I really enjoyed this story, I felt so bad for Jaz, when we found out the true extent of what she'd been through it wasn't a surprise that she'd decided to hide herself away. But the sparks that flew when she met Tor were enough to light her a path out of her hideaway, I loved that he knew what he wanted and, when he'd set his mind to it, he went for it. I loved all the sass and heat between the two of them and the book signing scene was just so beautiful. Can't wait to read about more of the Seattle Vipers players.
Ms. D gives us a sweet and spicy book to begin a new series! The story of Alexis/Jaz/Supernova and Tor/Mountain starts with her squeezing him for knowledge about hockey as she's trying to write a hockey romance with no information about the game. This begins a sweet and spicy ride on the way to their HEA. Dive into this beautifully written book with complex characters and plot twists that keep you turning pages throughout. I loved reading this story and highly recommend it! Don't miss out on this book!!
Jaz, a romance writer, is figuring out life after a major event happened… While doing so, she meets Tor, a sinfully hot hockey player who is considerate, honest, and oh so hot. Did I say he was hot???
Jaz and Tor work to find balance as they work on themselves and on a relationship with roadblocks popping up. They are an amazing couple and they are smoking 🔥 🔥 🔥. I loved every single moment of it.
Oh this found family rocks the house!! The supporting characters are excellent…it will be amazing to see their stories play out. This is book 1 of ‘The Seattle Vipers ‘ and I am so excited for the next book!! I have to say, this is now my favorite hockey romance. Just splendid!!
I am not usually one for sports romances but I have read some of D Sparks other work and loved it and this one didn't disappoint either. The chance meeting between Jaz and Tor sparks off attraction that neither of them can deny. Under the guise of learning more about hockey for a new book, Tor and Jaz spend increasingly more time together and romance blossoms...but this doesn't come at a cost and it isn't all plain sailing for either of them.
If you are looking for a spicy, sporty romance with a cinnamon roll MMC and curvy insecure FMC then check this out.
This book was a perfect hockey romance! I love that Alexis/Jazminne is curvy! All of the characters are so endearing and I can’t wait to see whose story is next. So Alexis/Jaz gets her heart broken and she moves to a new city and meets Lia. Lia has a brother who is a major hockey player and they go to a game which leads to Jaz meeting Torrance. And instant sparks! I enjoyed this story a whole lot- great balance of hockey and romance.
A new start in a new place after running away from her cheating Ex and her old life turns writer Alexis/Jaz's life around. When Vipers Hockey team Captain - Tor takes and interest in her sparks strat to fly between both of them. Only for outside influences, a book and her old life to get in their way. I loved Alexia and Tor's relationship. It was heartwarming, endearing and steamy too. I had my fingers crossed throughout reading this that they'd get their HEA ending. A good read.
I can’t tell you how much I love this book black romance books that really gives you the feels you girls don’t know how much we appreciate y’all to be able to relate to all elements of a story is everything for the characters to actually like and listen to the same music as you do just hit differently I can’t wait for the next book in this series I fell in love with Tor and Alexis and all the side characters I need a book for each and every one of them
Wow! This is like a behind the scenes peek at the author experience mixed with hockey romance. Alexis is escaping her imploding life and hiding out as her pen name, Jaz. An unexpected neighbor, one hockey jersey and a love at first sight connection leads to one adrenaline filled adventure for Tor and Jaz as she takes real life and makes it into a story.
Alexis is a writer with writer block and she hopes moving there will help her. She decided to write a story about ice hockey but she needs help. He is the captain of the team and he will help her but love will bloom. Will writing their story ruin their future? Can he forgive her? Can she get him back? See how she gets on
Alexis and Tor's story is really good. She is an author with writers block due to her ex. Now she's trying to get back to writing and Tor offers to help her understand hockey for her book. They already had feelings for each other, but as they spend more time together that increases. This is a very good book. I enjoyed their story and how I get to get more about the other characters.
I love Jaz's story. Her heartbreak, finding love at first sight. This book is so well written and has amazing depth. You will be turning pages and rooting for Jaz and Tor to find their HEA. There are definitely some tugging on the heartstrings moments. I highly reccomend this amazing book!
