The last thing he wants is to trek into the jungle to save the President’s daughter.
Shepherd “Shep” Barlow left the military behind. All he wants is to stay on his Colorado mountain—alone, with no interruptions, and no people. He especially likes to avoid people.
Then his former commander arrives, asking him to risk his life on a deadly mission to Central America. A mission to rescue the archeologist daughter of the President of the United States.
Once a member of a covert Ghost Ops team, Shep has the skills to get in quietly and rescue Ms. Sinclair. And as much as he wishes otherwise, he can’t leave an innocent woman in danger.
Hayden Sinclair loves her work. It keeps her far away from the liars, cheats, and phonies in Washington D.C. But when she’s abducted from her archeological dig in Nicaragua, she’s plunged into a life-or-death situation. Her captors plan to use her as a bargaining chip, and Hayden knows she has to escape.
What she never expected was to collide with the world’s biggest, grumpiest rescuer.
On the run in the jungle with six and a half feet of rugged, muscular, scowling man, she finds Shep rude and annoying. But as her captors ruthlessly hunt them, she also discovers a man who’ll risk his own life to protect hers.
Neither of them are looking for love, especially when they have to fight to survive…besides, there could never be a happy ending for the daughter of the President and a grumpy, battle-scarred soldier, could there?
I’m a USA Today bestselling romance author who’s passionate about fast-paced, emotion-filled romantic suspense and science-fiction romance. I love writing about people overcoming unbeatable odds and achieving seemingly impossible goals. I like to believe it’s possible for all of us to do the same.
I love hearing from readers and you can find me on Facebook, Instagram and my website: www.annahackett.com
This was so freaking cool, and I love the suspense, action, nerve-wracking tension, and, of course, the romance. ❤️
Hayden is the POTUS daughter and is an archeologist. Her current dig is in Nicaragua, and she has been abducted to be auctioned to the highest bidder. I mean, what could be the surest way to blackmail the president, right?
Then Shep was assigned to take her back and deliver her safely to Washington. Hayden was successful in escaping her kidnappers, thanks to the training she had when she was younger. Coincidentally, that was also when Shep found her location. He saw her when she finally escaped, and their meet-cute, or not, involved Hayden punching Shep, thinking he's one of her captors. 🤭
Anyway, this was so freaking cool. The suspense of trying to get back to the US was exciting, and I was holding my breath to see if they were finally going to make it. Their two escape attempts were thwarted, and they had to devise a new exit strategy. Luckily, Shep's former boss was helping them through this mission. Though it wasn't easy, he eventually managed to get her back to safety. There's a lot of gunfighting, fistfighting, bloodshed, and violence involved to make it happen. But in the end, Hayden was rescued, and Shep succeeded in his mission.
As for the romance, this kind of falls into insta-lust, then love. Maybe because the adrenaline was high, they were both in a dangerous situation, and they're relying on one another, so the romance progressed more than quickly. But it was freaking hot. I mean, the tension between these two was so palpable, and when they finally did something about it, it was really goood. Maybe others won't feel like it was fireworks because technically they've known each other for only two days when they kissed, but idk, there's something in the writing style that made me so hot and bothered. 😂
Also, it was funny because both of them don't want relationships or anything about it. But boy, oh boy, do they eat their words. They said it would be casual, but look how fast that turned out to be a lie. 😂 They've known each other for a week, I think, but I guess when you know, you know. 🤷♀️ They both fell fast and hard, but there was a third-act breakup.
They were separated for a week. Shep was recovering from a gunshot wound in his cabin in the mountains, while Hayden was back at the whitehouse and couldn't go anywhere. Initially, Shep didn't want to do anything about his feelings because he thought he wasn't good enough for her, thanks to the horrors he saw while he was still serving his country.
But Hayden was determined to get back to Shep, and she convinced her dad to find out where he's living, and she showed up at his cabin. Tbf, the day she showed up, Shep had already gotten his head out of his ass and was about to make his move to contact her. Let's just say that Hayden was more proactive. 😂
They were adorable together, and I don't even think that term should be used to describe them, but they were really good together and disgustingly sweet. 😍 Totally loved their combo and how seamlessly they worked together. Hayden's not a pain in the ass, and she complemented Shep's broody persona. The grumpy-sunshine trope never fails to make me giddy, and I'm here for all of it.
Anyway, I loved it, I only removed the half point because of their breakup, and this has a HFN ending (in a relationship 🤷♀️). Although there's a bonus epilogue, that was only six months later, and they got engaged. I'm greedy to see a glimpse of their lives many years later; that's the type of epilogue I wanted to read. 😂
Overall, this was so good, definitely worth reading.

Solid, escapist, and fast-paced read. Nothing groundbreaking plot-wise, but I liked both the H and h and that each had developed backgrounds and personalities. Even though the H was rescuing the h, she wasn't just cowering in a corner waiting for saving, which was awesome. This isn't quite insta-love, but the forced proximity and constant danger definitely aid a quick fall into love for them both since the story takes place over a matter of days. Both are on board with a casual relationship given their situation and personal hang-ups, however both also want more quickly. Also, despite the buckets of danger and suspense, quite a bit of steamy times happen. Written in third person, dual POV (with one part written in a side character's POV). No ow/om drama and neither were virgins (h had been in a serious relationship that ended with being cheated on so doesn't trust men and the H engaged in casual hookups sometimes).
I did side-eye how often they had to shift plans for rescue and I found myself yelling at them a couple times to take out the bad guys a bit more permanently rather than some of the incapacitation that occurred. It was funny to me that times when I'd wonder why their thoughts drifted to lustiness in the midst of chaos, the characters would then also internally question why they were going there. A bit of repetition happened, but overall the story read smoothly and quickly. There's also a brief separation that's technically not instigated by either one, but also requires them to commit to choosing each other. The epilogue is a short jump ahead with them happily together so felt satisfying. I'm glad that friends read and recommended this.
2☆ DNF 51% POTUS' daughter says YOLO and it's so chill.
Unpopular opinion alert. I haven't read much romantic suspense; gave this a shot for some variety because the premise sounded pretty good. Unfortunately I found the plot and character moves too far-fetched to swallow. The prickly, jaded h (Hayden), daughter of the current POTUS, is somehow allowed to work as an archeologist basically alone in a dicey, unstable, remote area in a foreign country with only one SS agent. Rightrightright. Totallytotally. The U.S. gov't would definitely allow that major security risk just because Hayden wants to live her life.🙄 It's honestly begging to be kidnapped by bad guys so they can bargain with POTUS--and wouldn’t you believe it, that’s exactly what happens! OMG no way! 🤦🏻♀️
The H (Shep) is former U.S. Special Forces with trauma/survivor’s guilt who is withdrawn and tends to grunt when forced to interact. This dude is supposed to be a super soldier and the strong, silent, guarded type. Except...for some unknown reason he starts spilling his guts about his personal shit to the President's unfriendly kidnapped daughter about an hour after “rescuing” her (if you can call that a rescue). So that annoyed me and it kept happening. In between running and dodging bullets, emotionally unavailable Hayden & Shep have impromptu Overshare Talk Therapy with Total Strangers sessions followed by sexytime in tiny tents and convenient vacation homes complete with a pool and a skimpy bikini for Hayden. And yeah there are terrorists somewhere nearby who flew to Nicaragua to find her, but she's busy having sex in a charming drug dealer's pool. 😆 If you can buy it, maybe it's fun?
The Hero She Wants is the second installment in Anna Hackett's Unbroken Heroes series, combining romantic suspense and adventure. This series features alpha males who are deeply loyal and committed to helping those in need while also working to defeat villains. Although these men are loving and respectful toward the women they fall in love with, they often feel unworthy of love. Each man is taken by surprise when he discovers his soulmate, a revelation that brings both unexpected joy and new challenges.
When one of their own faces a serious threat, the entire group comes together, demonstrating their unbreakable bond as they confront and dismantle the menacing forces against them. The narrative is filled with exhilarating action sequences, sizzling chemistry between characters, and intense tension, all set within a gripping plot filled with intrigue, drama, and peril.
I find myself completely engrossed in the experience of rereading this series, savoring each emotional twist and turn..
Non-stop action! This was a quick and exciting read. Shep was a grump but Hayden took it all in stride. The connection was pretty quick, but it worked as they both weren't looking for a relationship initially. Another enjoyable read in this series and I look forward to Ren's story.
WONDERFUL CONTINUATION OF THE SERIES!!! Title: The Hero She Wants Author: Anna Hackett Series: Unbroken Heroes, Book 2 Designation: Contemporary Adventure/Adventure/Romantic Suspense (Can be read as standalone but includes cameos of characters from previously published books in other series. Each book features a different couple finding their HEA.) Heat Level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ (Multiple Explicit Love Scenes) My Rating: 4 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
In 2009, I read a fantasy/paranormal romance novella published by Harlequin and written by a new, little-known author named Anna Hackett. I was impressed, as well as intrigued, and began following her career. I witnessed her raw talent grow and evolve into something truly extraordinary. I’m 72 years young and extremely selective about the books I choose to read, and I’m even more selective about the books I recommend. I, typically, do my due diligence for the books I purchase, but there are a few, select authors who are automatic one-clicks for me and Hackett most definitely ranks in my top five. I probably own every book she’s ever published , and I can honestly say I always get my money’s worth. And just because I’m a fan doesn’t mean an author doesn’t have to earn every star I give for the book’s rating. I’m actually much more critical of my favorite established authors. I expect more from them. Without a doubt, Hackett is one of the most versatile, reliable, consistent, prolific, and imaginative authors in the current self-publishing industry today, effortlessly crossing the paranormal, fantasy, science fiction, action/adventure, and contemporary romantic suspense genres. Her books are always engaging, realistic, and filled with nonstop action. And most importantly, they’re well written and exceptionally well edited with professional formatting, gorgeous covers, naturally flowing dialogue, and relatable characters.
In this book, The Hero She Wants, Hackett continues her Unbroken Series series about a group of former, highly-skilled military Ghost Operatives who have experienced terrible loss and trauma and have all but given up on love and a happy life…until a brave, kickbutt heroine suddenly barrels into their life and kicks their alpha protective instincts into high gear.
This book features grumpy, loner protagonist Shep Barlow, another tortured hero suffering from tragic losses, both before and during his military service. Shep was also a former Ghost Operative and has been seen in stories from previous series and reintroduced in The Hero She Needs, the first book of this series, when he gives aid and shelter to Boone Hendrix and Gemma Newhouse.
Our story goes from zero to sixty in the first chapter when archeologist Hayden Sinclair is abducted from a dig site in Nicaragua and the remaining members of her group are executed. But Hayden Sinclair is no ordinary archeologist and there’s much more at stake than a hostage rescue. Hayden is the daughter of the president of the United States and terrorist groups from across the globe are all racing to Nicaragua, determined to acquire and use her as their political pawn.
When General Rand receives a recommendation from former Ghost Operative Commander, Vander Norcross, he pays a visit to Shepherd ‘Shep’ Barlow, requesting his help in rescuing Hayden Sinclair. Shep’s special training & skill set could very well be the determining factor in the success of the rescue. Shep isn’t interested and declines the mission. He’s already lost too much, before and during his military service. Vander Norcross, Shep’s former Ghost Ops commander, refuses to give up on our reclusive hero and travels to Colorado to personally request his help. Shep reluctantly accepts the mission but the clock is ticking and time is running out. When Shep reaches the site where Hayden is being held prisoner, what he finds truly astounds him. Our brave heroine is in the process of rescuing herself with a daring escape attempt. Shep immediately realizes there’s much more to Hayden than meets the eye. After helping her escape, the pair get off to a rocky start, with all escape routes blocked and danger closing in from every side. With Shep's tortured past and Hayden’s recent betrayal by her former fiancé, neither is interested in any romantic entanglements. Unfortunately for our two protagonists, fate and love can never be easily denied… and our hero and heroine learn a very value lesson: never say never. Unfortunately, they’ll have to survive nonstop danger, enemies at every turn, and most importantly, learn to trust their true feelings.
So, did I enjoy this book? Absolutely! I was immediately drawn into Shep and Hayden’s dangerous quest for survival and quickly became invested in their journey to a once-in-a-lifetime love. Shep has popped up in several books of Hackett’s other series and I was so happy to see him get his happy ending. And Hayden was the perfect complement to Shep’s grumpy, grunting, one-word-reply character. Shep may have been a man of few words and not even remotely capable of flowery prose, but he sure could talk dirty during sexy times. And I do love a dirty-talking hero who’s willing to do anything for his heroine! Would I recommend it? You bet and I am but only for adult readers since it does contain some profanity and explicit sex scenes. Will I read this author again? I think I’ve already answered this question but just to be clear: heck yeah! But just a quick warning for everyone…once you start reading, you won’t be able to stop! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read!
Shepherd 'Shep' Barlow is done with his military life and now wants to spend his life in solitude in his mountain, away from people. But when Hayden Sinclair—the daughter of the President of the United States—is taken while working on a job site in Nicaragua, his former commander reaches out to him to send him on a rescue mission to save her before she gets handed over to the highest bidder to be used as leverage against their nation.
Shep and Hayden are now on the run, trying to find a way out of the jungle and to safety. Every turn seems like a dead end, and the people hunting Hayden are too close for comfort. Shep has too many demons from his past that still haunt him to ever consider being with someone, and Hayden has seen her fair share of liars and betrayals to let her guard down for anyone, but as the two try to find their way out of this perilous situation, they start forming a connection that neither was expecting.
Hayden had found it difficult to trust anyone in her life when all most people wanted from her was a way to get to her father. The latest in this long line of people was her ex-boyfriend. Now she'd vowed to stay away from anything resembling a relationship, focusing instead on her work as an archaeologist. But as she spends more time with Shep, she starts appreciating his no-nonsense and straightforward attitude. He was always honest with her without downplaying or sugarcoating anything, trusting her capabilities, and doing whatever it took to keep her safe every step of the way.
After the way he lost his sister and feeling responsible for not reaching to save his men on time during his last mission with the Ghost Ops, Shep had chosen to keep to himself in the mountains. He felt undeserving of having someone in his life while also fearing that he'd let them down or worse—lose them. He had seen and done a lot during his time in the military, which he also didn't want to burden anyone with. However, he had a lot of self-reflection the more he got involved with Hayden. Being with her made him feel like he could want more for himself for once, and he slowly came to the realization that the people he'd lost in his life would want him to move forward and truly live his life instead of merely existing.
The situation between Shep and Hayden starts off with them giving in and acting on their attraction with all the chaos and uncertainty they were dealing with. But as the story progresses, Hayden's trust in Shep shifts from him just being there to rescue her on her father's orders to something deeper. With everything else feeling out of their control and unsure, the only thing Hayden seems to be sure of is Shep.
Like book one, this was packed with so much action that I couldn't put it down. I finished this in one sitting, and I loved it so much. It was so intense, and every near escape had me at the edge of my seat. It was so much fun.
What I'm liking in this series is how the women aren't damsels in distress but do what needs to be done to survive. Hayden worked with Shep as a partner and formulated their plan of escape, also taking charge when needed. The situations were really stressful, but they worked together well to come out of it.
The spice was really good, and I enjoyed the way Hayden took control and pushed Shep when he was too conflicted. It was exactly the push he needed, and they were great together.
Lorenzo is an interesting character, and the hints I got from this book about his story have my interest piqued.
This story has everything a classic Anna Hackett story brings. It had me on the tip of my page from page one. It was so exciting and so full of action. I LOVED it. The story sets in the Nicaraguan jungle and features our favorite mountain man Shep (yay! Finally he gets his book) and one president’s daughter. Hayden can hold her own and when she meets Shep, she punches him in the face and tells him off in a typical strong female lead way. The story has great twists and turns and we meet a lot of characters from previous books, and I can tell you; I live for those little snippets. Shep turns out to be quite swoony when he wants to, although in a gruff way that is just him. The hero she wants gives Shep the perfect ending to his story with a strong heroine and a bright future.
Anna has delivered another outstanding tale of 'daring do' that she does so well. It's good to know that in a world filled with uncertainty, we can depend on authors who deliver consistently well written books for us to escape into. Thank you for the world with heroes we can love and not be disappointed in.
Love this author but this story was very slow to start and i started stopped started etc almost returned it. I started it again and within a few chapters it finally picked up. Whole story predictable and a HEA.
Archaeologists make the best protagonists – because there are just SO MANY WAYS they can get into trouble. Just ask Indiana Jones – or better yet, his father, Professor Henry Jones.
That rule certainly applies to this author’s work, as her very first heroine, in her very first book, At Star’s End, was an archaeologist among the star-scattered human diaspora. It’s a theme that has cropped up again and again, not just with the entire Treasure Hunter Security series (distant ancestors of the crew in that first book, but, also in this latest work with Dr. Hayden Sinclair, expert in pre-Columbian Central American history.
An archaeologist who also happens to be the daughter of the sitting President of the United States.
Hayden was determined to go on this dig, and determined to do it as a working archaeologist and not as a visiting dignitary or show pony or whatever. This is her job, and she’s determined to do it well and more importantly without a whole squad of Secret Service agents guarding her every step.
No matter how much, as it turns out, she might need them. Or, at least her teammates and fellow archaeologists do. Or did.
After all, the kidnappers plan on keeping her alive so that she can be auctioned off to the highest bidder looking for leverage on the U.S. President. The rest of her colleagues are merely…collateral damage.
Hayden Sinclair, is tied up and held captive in the middle of a compound full of the men who just killed her team and her friends. She should be at her lowest ebb – and she kind of is. But that doesn’t stop her from rescuing herself.
Only to walk straight into the arms of the one-man rescue team that has been sent to take care of that job FOR her.
Shep Barlow may be just a bit behind on Hayden’s jailbreak, but he’s EXACTLY the man she needs to walk beside her every step of the way home. No matter what it takes. No matter what he has to give up.
Because he’s the hero she wants, and she’ll do anything and defy anyone to keep him. Even her own father. Even Shep himself.
Escape Rating A-: This whole, entire series so far gives me a giant earworm. Everytime I even think about either of the books in this series so far, I get the chorus of Bonnie Tyler’s “Holding Out for a Hero” playing in my head. Or even better – or worse depending on persistence – the scene from Shrek II.
Although Hayden doesn’t actually NEED a hero. She’s already rescued herself. Not that she can’t use Shep’s help and survival skills, because she certainly can. But she’s no delicate flower and doesn’t need anyone who will treat her like one.
The title of this entry in the series says it all. Hayden doesn’t NEED a hero, but Shep Barlow is certainly the man she wants – precisely because he knows better than to treat her like she needs rescuing. Not even her father is able to figure that out.
What makes the story in this one such a compulsive page-turner is the way that Hayden and Shep jump together out of the frying pan and into yet another fire, over and over again, as her kidnappers do their damndest to close off all avenues of escape.
What makes the romance in this one sing and zing is that this is a romance of equals in spite of the heroine-in-jeopardy start, a romance that has to carry both partners’ heavy baggage until they finally figure out they can drop it all and hold onto each other for dear life. For the rest of their lives.
The Unbroken Heroes series has been terrific so far, beginning with The Hero She Needs and continuing with this second book, The Hero She Wants. The third book in the series, The Hero She Craves, is coming in June and I expect that terrific streak to continue. What I’m loving about this series so far is that, although the link in the series is through those heroes, it’s the heroines who stand up, take charge, and participate oh-so-actively in their own rescues.
There are no delicate flowers here, and that’s the way I like it. One of the other things I like is that this particular set of heroes has interesting friends in some very high and dangerous places, like Hayden’s father-the-president, and the stories have high stakes that extend beyond the mutual rescue and the heart stopping romance.
Which is reminding me quite a lot and very much of M.L. Buchman’s romantic suspense series(es), particularly his Miranda Chase series, where smart civilians find themselves walking the halls of power to find the loves of their lives and keep the country safe along the way. So if you’re looking for something to tide you over between Anna Hackett’s heroes, consider this a recommendation for M.L. Buchman’s books as excellent readalikes with lots to explore.
Meanwhile, I’ll be waiting for Anna Hackett’s next entry in her action/adventure romantic suspense Fury Brothers series, Burn, coming in March.
Sincerely, I wanted this story to last longer. I love everything about Shep & Hayden. I could have read another 400 pages about these two – and I truly believe it would have been just as entertaining as Shep rescuing Hayden from Nicaragua… I mean, Shep witnessing Hayden rescue herself This book was my first military romance and I have to say, I think I may have found a new favorite trope to follow. Shep’s broody, mountain man vibe just added to that appeal, overall. I loved the fact that Hayden was a tough-as-nails heroine in this story because that is what it took to break through Shep’s exterior he worked so hard to build up. I mean, not to spoil anything, but when Hayden hits Shep as he’s initially trying to rescue her, I was cackling out loud! You know anyone who is ex-military going on a mission like that is NOT expecting a woman who can somewhat hold her own against a full-grown man! Hayden, you are my hero just as much as Shep is for getting out there to save her! There are several open door steamy scenes that had me jonesing for my own Shep in real life. Man, can Anna Hackett create amazing characters with true chemistry! I was jealous and happy for Hayden & Shep at the same time! This is a shorter read but it was action packed the entire – dang – time! It’s written from the 3rd person POV between Hayden and Shep. The plot is well thought out and the cadence of the story was perfectly timed, in my opinion. Every single twist in the plot was believable – i found my heart racing several times, trying to predict what was going to happen next and whether our main characters would end up in the clear. Like I said, I would have happily given Hayden & Shep many more hours of my time with a longer novel, but it wrapped up perfectly the way Anna Hackett finished it. I have my fingers crossed that Ren is the next one to get his spotlight in the Unbroken Heroes series! AND, since I am fiending for more Shep, I have the first book from the series, The Hero She Needs, on download so I can meet Boone and Gemma, who are mentioned a few times in The Hero She Wants. If you enjoy a military romance with action packed scenes instead of the usual drama of breaking up & unnecessary conflict, you’ll enjoy this read!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Series: Unbroken Heroes #2 Rating: 4 stars - It was really good
Since leaving the military Shepherd “Shep” Barlow prefers to stay on his Colorado mountain alone and avoid people. But when his former commander arrives he finds himself being asked to take a deadly mission to Central America to rescue the archaeologist daughter of the President of the United States.
After meeting Shep in the previous book I was excited to get his book and see him fall in love. Shep is a reclusive grump who left the military with survivor's guilt and PTSD. Shep also had a tragic childhood that compounded onto this. Shep was a man who spoke little but was extremely skilled and went out of his way to protect Hayden. I loved how protective he was of Hayden from the very beginning. I also liked that he was proud of how she was holding up during their various attempts to evacuate from Nicaragua and the situation in general. He respects Hayden from the beginning and never treats her differently because she is the president's daughter.
Hayden was amazing. She was snarky, smart, and fearless. She doesn’t wait for Shep to rescue her after she is kidnapped, she plans her escape and succeeds. I loved that while she may have been terrified she never gives up and keeps fighting back. She was a great MFC and it was just great seeing her kicking ass next to Shep. Also I really loved how snarky she was towards Shep in the beginning when she was trying to get him to open up more, it was so amusing.
Overall, this was another action packed and suspenseful romance. I really enjoyed Hayden and Sheps' romance. While we only briefly meet him in this, I am now interested in learning more about Ren and the woman he is avoiding.
TW: on page murder of a friend; grief; PTSD and survivor’s guilt; death of a parent from cancer mentioned; torture and death of friends mentioned; abusive grandparent mentioned; death of a sibling mentioned;

Four and a half Wow this started as it meant to go on and trust me that’s at a very fast pace ! Hayden may be the Presidents daughter but she’s her own woman too and right now she’s helping run a dig in South America. Except Hayden has been kidnapped and now the kidnappers want to sell her to the highest bidder ! Guess it’s time for those big girl panties as Hayden tries to find a way to save herself ! Shep has seen a lot in life and during his military career. He knows he’s better alone and his place in the Colorado mountains suits him fine. It’s just a pity that his old friend Vander keeps bugging him to get out more. Typical guy just because he’s loved up he just doesn’t get that the happy ever after isn’t for Shep. Still he’s not one to refuse a cry for help so finds himself agreeing to go in and somehow rescue the missing daughter of the President. It’s just too bad that he’s not the only one searching for Hayden. This was fun and very exciting to read. Actually it felt very different to recent books by this author although I’m sure regular readers will enjoy the grump that is Shep. Hayden just keeps bouncing along and refuses to stay down which made for an interesting journey for the two of them. They are a passionate couple, making the most of opportunities but as I much prefer a slow build ( enemies to lovers is my favourite) than for me not a perfect read. I do most definitely recommend reading this though as it’s action packed and certainly keeps the reader eagerly turning the pages. All in all a very engaging and satisfying romance with a happy ending. This voluntary take is of an advanced copy and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
Hayden, independent and strong as hell. Her father may be the President but she is determined to keep living her life as normal as possible. But things take a turn at her archeology dig when the shooting breaks out and she is kidnapped...she now finds herself fighting to survive with the grumpiest man with secrets and nightmares of his own.
Shep, he has his demons and carries the burden of losing four important people in his life. He lives and enjoys (well kinda) his solitude in his cabin, where he doesn't have to deal with people daily or well ever 🙈 he loves the quiet and refuses to leave. But that changes when Vander (🔥) makes him go on a mission, one that changes his life.
Shep and Hayden had amazing chemistry, the h was kickass and I loved her determination. The hero, he had to let go and move on from his demons and that wasn't easy.
...spicy as hell scenes, protective as hell hero, both not looking for commitment and on the run from bad guys!
Well Anna has certainly done it again. Another nail-biting, page turning, edge of your seat rollercoaster.
Book 2 in the Unbroken Heroes series follows Shep and his mission to save the President’s daughter after she was kidnapped from an archeological dig in Nicaragua.
Shep is a former member of the Ghost Ops team and after leaving the team he is very happy on his own, on his mountain without the interference of other people. However no one else is is better suited to take on this mission.
Hayden might the President’s daughter but she is definitely not a pampered, helpless woman either. After finding a way to escape her kidnappers, she punches Shep in the face when he tries to rescue her. I love that she is a strong, determined female lead. She is thrown into crazy, dangerous situations and every time she just buckles up and gets through it. Shep is of course a growly grump but you can also tell that he is impressed with Hayden’s tenacity.
The action and suspense will keep you on the edge of your seat and honestly, just when I thought these two were in the clear something went wrong.
This is a really great read and I cant’ wait to see what Anna brings out next.
The Hero She Wants is a fast paced, romantic suspense. Shep Barlow doesn't like people, and prefers the solitude of his mountain home. When he is asked by an old friend to go on a solo mission to rescue an Archaeologist who also just happens to be the daughter of the President, he eventually agrees. Hayden is a strong, smart woman. And when she is kidnapped, she doesn't plan on just sitting around waiting to be rescued. She & Shep have some amazing chemistry, and I love how snarky & sassy Hayden is. This was an exciting read that I could not put down.
I love when a grumpy, broken hero meets a feisty, strong heroine and they end up saving each other...and that's exactly what happens between Shep and Hayden! Another fun adventure full of steam and action! I look forward to Ren's story...and maybe, hopefully, we get to see more of Miguel!
I loved it and I seem to never have anything else to say once I've read Anna Hackett's books.
This series is amazing and we're just two books in. I loved the fact that although this is its own story, there's a connection to the previous book by heroes well known appearing in scenes here and there. There's never enough Vander for me so I grin when he pops in for a visit in books.
Also, this series - so far - introduces the hero of the next book in the series but only one at a time. In the first book, Boone's story, mid to end of the book we met Shep - a fellow former soldier from Vander's Ghost Ops team. Despite the fact that Vander and a couple of his super secret Ghost Ops members have already had their books written in the Norcross series, it appears this new series gives us a deeper insight into that team. We weren't bombarded with a group of characters in a brief introduction in the first book of the series to then await each individual story and hoping for certain heroes to get their HEA sooner than others... Though that certainly builds anticipation. But no, this time, the hero we'll read about next in the series, we're introduced to in the book before his.
In Boone's story, Shep made his very first appearance, leaving us wanting more of him but not knowing who he'll end with. Now, Shep had found his love and opened the door to Ren (his full name is so hot, IDKY, it just is), hinting who his leading lady will be. Which makes me want to read the third instalment for Ren but also to meet the next hero.
This adventure was explosive. The heroine was a badass, she surprised me plenty of times with her actions and her words. She is the first president's daughter to be written about/portrayed in a movie that I like, love, adore, want to be besties with. She's Indiana Jones! And Shep did not disappoint. I have nothing but compliments to say, he's wonderful and the perfect amount of grumpy, ideal combination of hot and badass with more than enough dirty talking skills to be hereby deemed Shep The Panty Melter.
This book was action packed from the very first page. It was the perfect way for Shep to find his partner and take back his life. There was plenty of suspense and action and the romance developed quickly, while still remaining believable. Hayden was a strong, intelligent heroine and made the perfect match for Shep.
When Shep appeared in the first book, I never would have guessed the trauma he’d endured in his backstory. He carried a lot of survivors guilt with him from his childhood and from his time in Ghost Ops. I loved how reluctant he seemed to take on the mission to save Hayden, even though he knew he couldn’t say no.
Hayden was a force to be reckoned with. She may have been the president’s daughter, but she was determined to get out of Nicaragua alive, with or without the help of grumpy Shep. Shep and Hayden had some amazing chemistry and their banter was hilarious. I loved seeing Shep’s view of Hayden shift as he witnessed her strength hiking through the jungle with kidnappers and terrorists on their heels.
Shep and Hayden had quite the adventure. It was intense from beginning to end. Their romance was hot and fast, and I loved that Hayden was just as protective of Shep as he was of her. They worked well together and were both determined to get back to US soil.
This was a great second book for this series. I loved that Vander Norcross was so determined to help Shep start living again. Heather may have had a softer side to him, but he was still the same unstoppable Vander who had unlimited resources to help his friends. I liked the introduction of Ren and the hints about where his book will take the series next.
The Hero She Wants is Book Two in Anna Hackett's new series, Unbroken Heroes. After a failed mission, Shepherd "Shep" Barlow left the military and hid in remote property in the Colorado mountains. When President Hayden Sinclair's only daughter was kidnapped from an archeological dig in Nicaragua, the first person everyone thought of to get her back was Shepherd "Shep" Barlow. At first, Shepherd "Shep" Barlow does not want to go, but he cannot leave a young woman in danger, so he agrees. Will Shepherd "Shep" Barlow save Hayden Sinclair, or will both die? The readers of The Hero She Wants will continue to follow Shepherd "Shep" Barlow and Hayden Sinclair to discover what happens.
The Hero She Wants is an excellent addition to Anna Hackett's fantastic new series. From the first page, I was engaged with the characters and plot. This book helps readers understand how military people handle survival guilt and the importance of their friendship with their team members. It also allows me to understand the role of archeologists and the importance of archeological digs in ensuring strong security.
I love Anna Hackett's portrayal of her characters and how they intertwine throughout this book. The Hero She Wants is well-written and researched. I like Anna Hackett's description of The Hero She Wants settings, which allowed me to imagine being part of the book's plot.
Thank you for the Author of my ARC copy in exchange for an honest review. I recommend this book.
Another hit!! This series is amazing. 🙌❤️ I wish I didn’t have to wait so long for each new book in the series. Alas.. masterpieces take time to write and that’s what this series is. After reading book 1.. I was hoping Shep would be our Hero in book 2 and I was not disappointed. He is SO yummy! ❤️ Shep is scarred.. antisocial.. ex special ops. He lives in the Colorado mountains alone by choice. No relationships or complications and that’s just the way he likes it. Hayden is the only daughter of the US President. She is an archeologist on a dig in Nicaragua. Rebels kidnap her and kill everyone on site. Their plan is to sell her to the highest bidder. Shep reluctantly agrees to help with her rescue. He is dropped alone in the jungles of Nicaragua. He expects a weak and spoiled young woman. Hayden is anything but! Together they trek through the jungle and try to survive the elements.. jungle and people hellbent on recapturing her. Feelings begin to develop that they both fight. There is serious HEAT between them and I was there for it. 🥵 Shep’s dirty mouth! 🥵🥵 This is an awesome story. If you find this one first .. go back and read book 1. They are both amazing!! Book one will introduce you to Shep. Both books are PHENOMENAL. 🙌🙌 Can’t wait for book 3. Praying it’s about REN. 🥵 5⭐️ 3.5🌶️
Anna’s books are like your favourite chocolate bar on sale, you know if you buy it, it will be finished before the end of the day. But you buy it anyway!
Spoilt daughter of the president insists on doing dangerous work, and what happens? She gets kidnapped! Shep is asked several times to go in and get her. When they track where she is and Shep is dropped in, he sees she has fooled the men guarding her and escapes into the jungle. She fights him initially, and he fights to keep her safe. They are shot at, their helicopter rescue is blown up, the jet is damaged, she is grazed by a bullet, then they get on a speedboat… but as the bad guys damage their engine, they are rescued by Ren on a research vessel.. On the way to meet an American warship they are boarded and Shep is shot in the chest.. she is determined to stay with him, but secret service sedate her and remove her from the ship, while Shep is still being operated on. She gets her dad to find him for her and he was just leaving to track her down when she drives up his drive. HEA I don’t understand why there is a seperate epilogue attached to Anna’s books now. Why can’t she just provide the book in one hit.. I am just waiting to see if these epilogues (which are currently free) are going to start costing us.. I must be getting cynical

I can’t believe it. I didn’t finish an Anna Hackett book. 😱😭
I’m in shock. Some of her books haven’t been brilliant lately, but this is the first that I haven’t finished. The plot just didn’t make sense. Hayden is the president of America daughter, and she’s working as an archaeologist in war torn Nicaragua, with one security detail. 🙈😱😂 ONE SECURITY WOMAN?? When Hayden’s father (THE PRESIDENT!) tells her it’s not safe in Nicaragua she doesn’t listen and tells him she’ll do what she wants. Ooookay. That would happen. 😂😂
Of course she’s taken hostage and yet she’s still arrogant and thinks she knows everything. 🤦♀️
When Shep is asked to do a rescue mission by Vander, he really doesn’t want to, but it’s Vander so he agrees.Vander was his team leader in ghost ops. Shep lives like a hermit up a mountain and doesn’t like people, as he has severe ptsd. So when he rescues Hayden and they’re walking through a jungle Shep suddenly becomes a chatterbox and tells Hayden his whole life practically. Okay I exaggerated he tells her a lot though. Shep who never talks to anyone?
I didn’t finish it I just couldn’t get into it and I’m really sorry to Anna Hackett but I don’t understand what’s happened to her books lately. I’ve read Norcross series three or four times and I love it, Sentinal security series is mostly brilliant as well, but this one wasn’t. Sadly.
I absolutely love Anna’s books the first one in the series The Hero She Needs was amazing action packed and this one is excellent too! Full of action, drama, tension, angst, attraction, chemistry and banter even with very little words from the broody MC! He is haunted by his past and constantly feels conflicted to not get too close. Hayden is spunky, sexy , intelligent woman who is gun shy to letting a man get close to her. She’s strong and independent and literally tells the man there to save her that she saved herself! This book is action packed! It keeps you on your toes, and holding your breath with the suspense! All the romantic moments sprinkled throughout this book is so so good! I loved the ending of the story and the bonus epilogue is the chefs kiss to this book!! Definitely grab this book!!! Can’t wait for REN’s book he was definitely a cutie in this book
It was short, steamy and action packed - exactly what I needed. I loved both characters although I'm not fan of she-deserves-better type of hero. It was a mild case so i didn't mind it. Also I really loved how heroine actually made efforts to rescue herself and not just sitting silently waiting for help.
Overall it was a great read! Would definitely recommend if you like grumpy as hell hero and sunshine heroine, close proximity and military romance.

𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐈 𝐑𝐄𝐕𝐈𝐄𝐖: Yet again, Anna Hackett proves why she is one of my go-to authors for all my action/suspense romance needs.
This book had the 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 balance of protective & possessive, heart-pounding action and danger, plus all the deliciousness needed in a grumpy hero, forced proximity romance. I loved every moment & devoured it quickly.
Shep & Hayden were perfect for one another. They protected each other, overcame obstacles designed to brake a person, and loved hard. The cameos from old characters rounded out this gorgeous love story perfectly.
My only sadness came from not seeing the couple from the previous book. . . But we had Vander, so I'm not that upset about it. . . Sorry, Boone. I definitely recommend grabbing this.
