Atami-kun has a gorgeous face. A romantic heart. And a steady stream of girls asking him out at every opportunity. Which is all wonderful, except…he likes guys, not girls. An upperclassman who enjoys reading, the long-haired boy who sits in front of him, the cute worker at the flower shop―each love fleeting but sincere, and just a bit complicated. Each bringing its own joy and melancholy. My oh my…even for Atami-kun, life truly isn’t easy.

I appreciate that the vibe of this manga is more about a teenage boy making friends rather than a romance or an action story. Atami struggled with not fitting in because he sometimes saying things too bluntly or reads situations incorrectly. Even so, he manages to make 2 friends pretty much through persistence and this is a series of stories where he interacts with different people inside and outside school.

Atami is queer and gets a lot of compliments for his looks. He has a lot of crushes that come and go and he even tells one of them how he feels. As a coming of age story, this might appeal to young people that also feel their social interactions are awkward.

The art style and writing style is more geared towards a very, very slow slice of life fan and I found it a slog to get through personally. However, I appreciate that it’s unique compared to other manga I’ve read.

Atami falls for any man that gives him any sort of positive attention and I love that lol. This was kind of a weird vibe so I don't really know how to feel about it. It was funny and I'm kind of invested in the story, but I'm not sure who exactly I should expect a romance from or if I should even expect a romance at all. I like the friendships and how goofy the characters are. It was a pretty good time.

I’m not sure how I feel about this manga but let me start by putting down my thoughts.

The story follows Atami who is really good looking and gets confessed to by both girls and boys. However, Atami is only interested in boy’s, especially those that are nice to him. Now, I’m not going to use the words love or like because I feel like Atami gets interested in them since they’ve been nice to him or attracted to them because of their looks. Although Atami is very straightforward and blunt about his feelings, I feel like he’s lacking in emotional intelligence.

Atami’s family situation isn’t explicitly implied but vaguely. I may be jumping the gun here but I feel like it’s far from normal and coupled with his lack of social interactions would lead him to misinterpret emotions. I think Atami is looking for a sense of belonging but I may be wrong; this is just my speculation.

Atami feels interested in multiple male characters of varying ages and jobs. They aren’t all students and some of them are vague but there doesn’t seem to be anything particularly similar about them. I enjoyed reading how Atami approached them because although each was different, there was a subtle hesitancy with the eagerness of getting closer.

This volume reads more like a slice of life than a romance forward BL story. The story is written with a gentleness found in most slice of life stories. It progresses at a measured pace, with nothing significant occurring and no prospective drama or suspense. Things happen, they pass and it repeats. However I found a sense of realism with some of the dialogues. The way some of the characters responded or acted are believable scenarios in the real world.

The artwork is clean and it’s a very unique style. It’s minimalistic, using background and shading where needed. Character expressions are quite subtle and sometimes I couldn’t tell the characters apart.

Overall this was a good read but not one I have strong feelings toward. The story wasn’t very engaging although I’ll still be continuing this series to see what happens.

One of my favorite things manga can accomplish so well is the slow and thoughtful analysis of one person's interactions with another, and this title exemplifies that. This book is a delicate examination of being a teenager.

Not my cup of tea. I finished the volume feeling relieved that it's over. I don't have a problem with the episodic format. However, the characters aren't charismatic or funny enough to hold my attention. While I do enjoy the art, it's not enough for me to continue with the series.

Not at all what I was expecting, but really, really good. I'd classify this as LGBTQA+ rather than BL, since I'm not sure there's actually going to be any sort of endgame romance (although I am quietly shipping a future with Adachi). It's more a slice-of-life story about a gay high schooler, and actually has the most realistic depiction of high school romance that I've seen in a super long time.

Atami sort of has four crushes over the course of this volume, although I think one of them (the long-haired classmate mentioned in the blurb) is more of a friendship deal. And friendship is really the focus of this entire volume. The first crush, on a second year named Adachi, ends pretty quickly in a confession and rejection, but that's really just the start of their true relationship. From that point on, Adachi is Atami's best friend. He spends most Friday evenings at Adachi's house, for dinner and board games with Adachi's mom and sister, and gradually picks up a couple more friends he can be himself around.

There's no homophobia, internal or external, in this story, which is also refreshing for the non-BL category, which can tend to have more gritty realism. Atami is like any other high schooler who's figuring himself out and feeling interested in the people around him. It doesn't particularly matter that he's solely interested in guys; the truth is, he's possibly not even that interested in actually dating any of them. Not yet anyway. It's more fun to just look at them and think about them and talk to Adachi about the little bits of interaction that seem special.

Which is exactly how high school (and some of college) was for me, honestly. Sometimes you don't actually want to date the hot florist. You just want to look at him and keep the flower he gave you one time and check out a library book about flowers so you can learn more about his interests.

Adachi doesn't totally understand this, but he's a remarkably good friend and always listens to Atami, giving advice when it seems like it might help.

The good-looking third year was a really interesting, and somewhat jarring addition. He looked enough like the florist (with a new haircut) that I thought initially he might be the same guy - the art in this series is expressive but not the most detailed. But he was just another gay student who was able to pick Atami out of the crowd and tried to pursue him...far too aggressively for Atami's taste, who did not want to hook up with some random touchy-feely third year stranger.

It didn't go anywhere after Atami's firm rejection - the guy seemed to take the hint and give up on him. But their whole interaction was a splash of cold water in the midst of a warm, relaxed story. I don't think Atami told Adachi about him, either.

Very interested to see where the series goes from here - and how long it goes, since it seems like this could be one of those long-running series without too much in the way of a plot. I enjoyed all the characters and look forward to spending more time with them.

Atami-kun is such an adorable bean.

Which is to say I really liked this first volume.

In it, we meet handsome and adorably odd first-year high school student Atami. Because of his good looks, he’s quite popular and receives many confessions from girls—that he always turns down because he doesn’t like girls.

Atami likes boys.

He’s a bit of a romantic and he’s always got a new crush—that he tells Adachi about.

Adachi is an upperclassmen and another of Atami’s crushes. Through eating lunch together regularly, the two have become confidants and have formed a close bond. Adachi invites Atami to have dinners with his family and encourages Atami to make new friends and explore his interests.

This is such a sweet, endearing story.

I appreciate how this story revolves around a queer character growing up and coming of age. Atami liking boys almost becomes secondary to this being that coming of age tale—which I really like. It normalizes—and humanizes—young people being queer and their challenges and joys as they grow up.

I think it’s so important to have stories like this.

More, I think it’s important to have stories with positive depictions of male friendship and relationships. These boys are so awkward and they say weird things or miss social cues—and they all still care for each other and kindly poke fun. Watching their relationships with each other grow is really heartwarming.

Highly recommend this story!

Especially if you are interested in reading more contemporary queer manga that isn’t BL or otherwise fetishizing queer identities, I’d encourage you to pick up this one~

This was one of the most intriguing and interesting manga's I've read in awhile. My Oh My, Atami-kun I think has joined a small list of manga that I categorize as Queer Manga over Bl or Gl Manga. The reason I specify it is because I believe it moves past the typical Bl genre and enters a knowledgeable form of queer representation. Other manga I put in the Queer Manga genre are: What Did You Eat Yesterday? By Fumi Yoshinaga, I Want to Be a Wall by Honami Shirono, I think Our Son is Gay by Okura, Boys Run the Riot by Keito Gaku, and My Brother's Husband and Our Colors by Gengoroh Tagame. They are a mix of own voices authors and straight authors writing on the queer experience. Each of the manga I've listed break the stereotypes and themes of the standard queer centered manga.

Atami-kun is gay and his love life is treated no differently then say the love live of a shojo romance protagonists love life, but is devoid of the drama. He is not discovering his queerness like in the famous Sasaki and Miyano or Hirano and Kagiura. It is normalized and in some ways not a big deal. Asa Tanuma has done what Fumi Yoshinaga does with What Did You Eat Yesterday? Understanding a queer experience. Atami is not fetashized or a stand in for a female reader, nor is he a caricature. He is messy and I love it. I really want someone to do an academic study of this volume.

A coming of age, slice of life manga that ended up being a lot more nuanced than I was expecting.

I love seeing a story about romance and self-discovery with a gay character that isn't about sexuality alone. Those books are wonderful, of course, but it is great to see a range in queer experiences. Atami already knows he is gay at the beginning of the story, but the complexities of crushes and dating evade him. My Oh My Atami-kun is a story about relationships that happens to have a gay main character, and that's pretty cool

As this is a slice of life, there isn't a strong singular plot. We just follow Atami as he meets different people and learns more about relationships of all kinds--familial, platonic, and romantic.

The characters are well written, the themes are common but explored in an engaging way, and the art is simple but well executed with emotions being portrayed clearly.

I am definitely going to check out the next volume.

My, Oh My, Atami-kun follows Atami, a high school student admired for his good looks and frequently approached by girls, though he's actually interested in guys.

Overall, this was an okay read for me—nothing particularly memorable, but it had its moments. What stood out most was probably how Atami's crushes were portrayed more as fleeting yet genuine feelings rather than a serious pursuit of a romantic relationship. I think it really captures the uncertainty, innocence, and awkwardness of a teenager who's still trying to figure himself out. Also, the way his friendships, especially with Adachi, were depicted as deep and meaningful without pushing for romance was a nice touch.

Beyond that, though, it didn't leave much of an impression, and I’m not really sure if I’ll continue with volume 2. It wasn’t bad, just not something that really captured my interest or resonated with me.

This is a really relaxing and gentle realistic fiction high school boys love manga, exploring what it means to like someone, and how you might deal with their reactions to that, and managing platonic friendship. The dialogue is a bit odd at times, but I think that's because the translator tried to keep the feel of whatever dialect is used by the characters.

The art is okay, and the world just seems full of very regular people dealing with very regular problems. I appreciated that although the characters went to a bug-focused event, we didn't actually see the bugs on-screen (outside the one on the cover page).

The cast is nice, as well.

I'm glad the Yen Press translation team kept the honorifics, since they're so important in the story. It would be nice if their Korean translation team did so as well.

Looking forward to volume 2!

Super cute high school days slice of life from a BL perspective with the quick to get a crush Atami kun going through school life with his one year older senpai slash crush Adachi kun. Really like friendships and crushes along the way as well as Atami slowly opening to his friend and going out to start a friendship of his own. There were super cute fun moments and especially loved the second seen at Adachis house. Love how Atami just blurts out stuff lol and I love how Adachi is the best friend.

Personally wish Adachi x Atami could be the end game couple, their cute.

Kunijima may potentially be an option, and I wonder about Tsuji, the loner, too.

Glad non BL magazines are putting out BL

Bonus were two short bonus manga chapters, and a small afterword.

Kind of an odd book. The synopsis made me think this would be a romcom, but it really isn't. It feels more like a slice of life comic, drifting from one low key scenario to another. Except that here, those scenarios are various boys the main character develops a fleeting crush on. I appreciate that his sexuality isn't really an issue for the vast majority of the book. Any journey of self acceptance is in the past, and he comes out to several characters over the course of this volume with little drama. Other than that, I'm really not sure why this book didn't hit the spot for me. I usually like gentle slice of life books.

Maybe it was the garbage I read right before this, but I was quite blown away with how much I enjoyed reading this manga. It appears to be the mangaka's debut (or relatively first works), and I am impressed. They have a unique art style I haven't seen anywhere else and a way of writing dialogue that's both simplistic/mundane yet so captivating. Not to mention the beautiful way that youths' fleeting crushes, heartbreak, and moving forward are portrayed, is something you don't see very often in BL stories. Wonderful read, highly recommend.

Cute, slow-moving slice of life story about an awkward boy trying to make friends and navigate his feelings towards friends and crushes. I like how he doesn't really understand everything right off the bat and has to talk through it, which leads to most of the dialogue in the series I think. Some young kids talking about their emotions, being a bit weird and goofy about it all, leading to some funny reactions when they say things you would think would be blatantly obvious- or are so random it only vaguely makes sense.

This volume felt like a collection of intrusive thoughts winning. It felt new, and I found myself intrigued despite the strangeness. I do wonder where volume 2 where will take us.

Not to put labels on Atami, but he seems to not truly want relationships? But just has fun having his crushes, which I'm happy to see explored more.

Thanks Edelweiss and the publisher for the DRC!

Very unassuming and chill. Everyone is so straight talking it's kind of unintentionally funny, (seeing as they're all high schoolers.) Wouldn't really know where to place it genre wise, but would maybe recommend for fans of Skip and Loafer?
