Ogami-san and Yaginuma-kun have advanced to their second year of high school. They plan to cross the line and take the next step as a couple, but it doesn't go well. Then, Yaginuma-kun is offered the opportunity to study abroad in America! Ogami-san doesn't want him to leave, but she also wants to support him… Torn, what will Ogami-san do? Here is the final volume of this raunchy coming-of-age romcom about wanting to touch but not being able to, complete with a happy ending!!
Ogami and Yaginuma’s journey comes to an end in rapid fashion, and the mangaka knows it. Is that self-awareness enough to make it go down any smoother? Well, sort of, kind of, a little.
Some of the gags work. I had great hope at the start of the book - the antics are very funny, from Ogami’s latest horny daydream to Nezu’s scheming to not get put on a school committee.
But then we get a pretty boring new character who’s a Yaginuma fanboy and he illustrates how Yaginuma has changed from his time having friends and being with Ogami, but is pretty dull on his own (his best moment is a joke about his existence in the omake).
Really, this has always been Ogami’s story, even if Yaginuma’s been the weird boy with strange powers. Her ongoing lusts and appetites are hysterical and seeing her taking an interest in finding out what her sexual appetites are makes for some amusing imagery (this manga has more bondage gear than expected for a book of its type).
Everything about this sexual awakening is fun, it’s basically the more light-hearted version of O Maidens in Your Savage Season, plus it’s good to see Ogami and Yaginuma trying to make it work with his quirk. But, it also keeps throwing up obstacles that don’t do much for me. It really had more than enough to work with.
The ‘going overseas’ trope is not one of my faves, although this one does take a slightly different path than most of those I’ve seen. I just think the rationalization is pretty thin; it feels like something just tossed in simply to rock the boat yet again.
Everybody else gets the shortest of shrifts, though at least most things do get addressed. And the ending is pretty sweet, if trite, so I’ll give it that much. It’s been a rocky road for these two; I just wanted a bit more.
In fact, when the grand resolution to the whole issue of sex comes around, well, it’s a very cute callback to the start of the series. It also happens to feel like a total cop out, given how randy other aspects of the story have been, but it’s good enough.
Does it do enough? That’s the question I keep asking myself. For every moment like the one on the rooftop or the airport, there’s all the stuff that lead to the airport or that new kid who doesn’t add anything. It’s not the best the story ever got, by a long shot, and it’s hard not to come down on the side of ‘they deserved better’. Which encompasses our leads, the mangaka, and the reader.
It’s hinted that this was not quite the conclusion that was intended; the phrase ‘grown-up circumstances’ comes up when discussing certain aspects in the omake. Given that, it does well, but it still doesn’t do great.
3.5 stars - it was just solid enough, I did enjoy my time with this at points, but it feels rushed and doesn’t quite achieve the finale it deserves, leaning into some seriously lazy story beats to generate the drama at the end. Good, but it almost never got as good as I wanted it to be.
Ugh did they really have to do the long distance trope???? REALLY? This series was quirky and quite hilarious but the ending just sucked. The story is about a pervy girl who FINALLY gets a bf but there was barely any progress in their relationship. Was that on purpose? To make us, readers want to tear our hair out?? Because making the same “weiner” joke just isn’t enough for me (especially by vol 5. Shit got old)… I sure hope Ogami finally got laid after the ending (we will never know for sure) LOL.
The 5 stars are for the series as a whole, but I would subtract a star for this volume for the simple fact that it seemed rushed and would have benefited with one more volume. Still, I liked the last chapter with the open ended, ‘did they or didn’t they’. I’m sure they did. I will miss this quirky romcom and our fun couple, especially Ogami’s horny thoughts.
Still cute and fun moments but man, this is a letdown of a finale. It just doesn't feel like the ending was well realized. The whole sudden move change, the year apart, just felt rushed. I wish we just dropped that whole segment but overall it's still cute and I love the leads.
I hate the ending so much this series is such a waste of my time, no wonder it got dropped and only have 7 instalments despite strong start. He's such an asshole, IDK what happened.
