“If the goal you had wasn’t really what you wanted, then all you have to do is set a new goal. It’s exciting thinking about what’ll come next!”

Man, I’ve been throwing a lot of these high ratings around all willy-nilly like! It's hard not to get a little insecure about it, you know? Because if there's one thing I can't abide by, it's acting like IGN with their constant "7 out of 10" reviews. Gasp I've come to the dark realization that I might be an easy grader! Oh no, can you imagine!? I'm mostly joking, but it's funny because there is always a split second of fear whenever I finish a book or a comic or a manga that I like too many things. Then I always try to remind myself that all these four star reads just means that I’m finding a bunch of winners. It's a good thing, and it’s cool, actually! I’m especially elated after finishing this, because the truth is that I’ve actually been looking for alternatives in the “Magical School” genre for a while now (for reasons I won't get into), and it’s surprisingly hard to find good ones. They never focus enough on the "learning magic" aspect of the genre. Yeah, I guess a lot of people find it tedious, but that's the very specific part that I want to see! Sure, The Spellbook Library is definitely more similar to its manga predecessors like Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic or Negima!, but it also reminded me of this very underrated video game called Radiata Stories in terms of art style and the overall vibe. The princess character from The Spellbook Library even has the same deadpanned delivery style to the princess from the game! I mean, I suppose they're mostly only kind of similar, I think I just wanted to name drop Radiata Stories because I love that game and I otherwise often get caught up in the euphoria of listing things. Really though, my favorite thing about this manga was its fascination with overly complicated and ornate libraries. This is a typical trope in manga, and yet I was still reminded of that glee I felt during the Wan Shi Tong's library episodes from Avatar the Last Airbender; the light in my eye was lighting up like I was Belle first seeing all of The Beast's books! And while I have to say that the characterizations of Tohru, Yan, and Emel, are all pretty one-note and hyper exaggerated in a way that’s typical of manga and anime, I almost think that it doesn’t really matter in the same way it would for a full length novel. Like most visual mediums, Manga has the advantage of being being able to be a “art first” kind of thing where three dimensional characters full of depth aren’t necessarily as load-bearing as they normally would be in, say, a book.

This is why I think that video games that are more focused on a specific artistic vision will always age a lot better than any "hyper realistic" and graphic intensive game. Tell me why does a critically acclaimed video game renowned for its realistic graphics (for the time) need to have, like, four different remakes in order to update the graphics up to the standard of the game director's "vision," while I can look at a game from decades prior and be like, "Well, that looks just fine to me!" A couple years ago, there was this popular trend on the scene where indie game developers were making all these "analogue horror games" that were deliberately made in the style of old Playstation 1 games of the late 90's. Isn't that wild? On purpose! It's seems silly to chase the ever impossible standard of realism in art when it's clear that the people yearn for artistic vision above all else. I'm just saying, Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker still holds up to any video game nowadays. Don’t get me wrong, wonderful character writing is always a plus, but as someone who’s been into manga long before literature or comic books (“manga boy,” they used to call me), it’s never really been what I need in order to enjoy a manga to its fullest. Besides, I thought that The Spellbook Library’s world-building was a breath of fresh air. It’s rather simplistic, I guess, but I loved how it felt like this fantasy world went back to the basics, in that it informs the character’s motivations rather than the other way around. For example, there’s a lot of fantasy manga out there that follow overpowered, “author inserts,” with gimmicky “video game” stats that basically always enter the story as the strongest and most irresistible man (they’re always dudes) around. For those who don’t know, this is it’s own genre or something and it’s super popular… and one of the reasons why I almost never bother with fantasy manga anymore. But yeah, that’s the main reason why I had such a good time with this, it knows the story it wants to tell and wastes no time in doing so. All I know is that I don't see this manga as an alternative anymore, but something that stands tall all on its own. Besides, there's also the fact that it spends a lot of time trying to make it look like going to the library is this super cool thing to do. And you know what? I dig it, going to the library is cool, and don't let anybody tell you different. The cooliest, even!

Oh, twisted, under, sideways, down / I know you're getting twisted and you can't calm down / I see you under the midnight, love darts in your eyes / How far can you take it 'til you realize? There's magic in your eyes (Magic – The Cars).

It was boring and fun at the same time? that’s the only thing I can say, the character Tohru seems like he have some secrets but I don’t even feel intrigued by them at this point.

Unfortunately, I won’t be continuing this manga :(

firstly, thank you to the publisher for an arc!

this was an ok start to a new series — it strongly reminded me of the magus of the library series.

i always enjoy the concept of magical libraries, especially the important role they have.

this first volume was simultaneously fast and slow? the mcs were accepted into the library too quickly, and characters are already suspicious of each other. i’ll keep reading because i’m interested, though.

Solid enough start to a new series I’ll be keeping an eye on. I like the premise so far (got a soft spot for libraries and magical books), and I’m intrigued by 2 out of 3 of the characters we primarily follow.

i like the concept of this with this group of people having to pass tests in order to work at a library that’s books hold all types of magical creatures. the art is nice too but the pacing is kind of uneven, with some of it being boring until it picks up again with the action. i can see the potential with the series cause it has a good concept, so i wouldn’t be against reading the next volumes but they won’t be a priority for me either.

many thanks to NetGalley, the author and Kodansha Comics for the arc, all opinions are my own.

My thanks to NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for an eARC of this book to read and review.

Meh. The beginning was clunky, with the artwork and dialogue not making ANY sense. The reader is thrown into this world with no idea of what is going on and not in a "ooh, I want to know more!" way, more like "what the heck is going on and do I really care to read more?".

It did get better and started to make more sense, but two characters who were in danger and the two heroes were not drawn in a way where this reader could differentiate them, so I was SUPER confused about who had released the book demon thingy for too many pages. I like to think that I am not slow when it comes to reading comprehension, but when I have to flip pages back and forth to figure something out and the book ISN'T a literary classic or in another language, that is usually not a good sign for me. I won't say no to reading the next volume, but I am not going to go out of my way to seek it out.

2, this is a big middle of the road 'meh' to me, stars.

The spellbook library is the first outing of Kodansha Comics' new "portal series" a set of English-first manga publishing first on Kodansha US.

The concept of this story is unique and quite fun. Yan and Tohru meet on their way to an employment exam to join the spellbook library. A library where all books hold magical creatures. This volume depicts their entrance exam and part of the first day on the job, ending on a cliffhanger.

Whilst unique, there were some pacing issues that made it hard to follow the story at times. Overall I am looking forward to seeing how the story will progress in future volumes...

Thank you to NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for providing an ARC copy for review. All opinions are my own.

Want to thank Netgalley and publishers for giving me the chance to read this book.

This was kind of fun. If you like those manga/animes where people have to take this big exam I think you would like this one. I have watched/read many like this so it wasn't much new, the story is still really good though! Well worth the read.

There are spellbooks that are magic and can trap dangerous magical beasts in them? Sign me up!

I thought that this volume was a pretty good start for the series. I'm very curious about the world and magic system... and Tohru, who is more of a supporting character, but there is something interesting there that I need to know more.

I will say that there were some silly parts and some character choices that were not things that I usually like, but that it definitely a preference. And I can get around that because of all the other things that I am curious about.

I really need volume 2.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for a free e-copy for an honest review.

This is a shonen manga by an author who has not much experience in the genre, but I couldn't tell. I enjoyed the art in this manga and it did not feel confusing during action scenes and sequences. The world and towns are revolving around these Spellbooks. Everyone has one for their job, they buy the books or borrow them from the Library. I believe it paves a good path for future volumes. There are dangerous and wild Spellbeasts, as well as useful and tame Spellbeasts.

The story follows our 3 MCs, Yan(former degenerate thug), Tohru(mysterious sheltered bookworm), and Emel(a princess).

Starting with Yan, at the beginning of the manga, Yan has a flashback to a time when he was being attacked by a Spellbeast. The special Sealing Unit, a group of 3 elite strangers, saved his life and sealed the Spellbeast attacking him. His life goal was now to meet them, and thank them. However, this goal is shortly (to us) achieved after 10 years, when Yan is admitted to the PR department at the Spellbook Library, he briefly meets the only remaining Elite member in the special sealing unit, the Captain.
Clearly dubious, the Captain seems very condescending and, is probably a bad guy, because he talks down to one of our MCs, Emel, who is the princess, and head of the PR department.
After completing his life goal, Yan is at somewhat of a loss, but he has come up with a new life goal, to join the Elite sealing unit.

Tohru bumps into Yan on his way to the Spellbook Library's entrance exam, vaguely we learn of his life, he was sheltered, and his only hobby was: Reading. It is his life goal to work at the Library, regardless of the department. Tohru is described as having a mysterious aura, by Emel, and she has been keeping an eye on him, as has Yan, because he has a mysterious necklace that seems to protect him with shields, and shock potential threats.
Before passing their exam, I enjoyed the dynamic forming between the two MCs. Yan, as a former lowlife has garnered a certain reputation in town, and is seen as such. He tells Tohru maybe they should split up because Yan is worried about Tohru's reputation now. Tohru declines the idea to separate, and would rather stick by his new friend who saved him earlier from some other thugs trying to mug his mysterious necklace.

After passing their exam, and being admitted to, only Yan's dismay, the PR department, Emel has full control of their activities now. Emel is obviously more than just a princess, but we don't get to see too much of that in Vol 1. At the end of this Volume, it ends on a bit of cliffhanger, with foreshadowing to some of Emel and Tohru's abilities and resolves.

The creatures are cute, well drawn, and the magic system holding the Spellbeasts in books is very cute. It reminds me of Mashle and Black Clover. I am looking forward to reading Vol. 2.

I was really excited to read this manga as I am currently myself studying to become a librarian! And I love books that have a library in them! The story also sounded very interesting.

But that was kinda it - it sounded interesting. I did find the world and the spellbook library fascinating but those were the only things I really enjoyed. The story feels too action packed and the events go by way too fast for my taste. On top of that I found all the main characters to be annoying which made me even more reluctant to continue reading the story.

Sadly the world itself nor the dragons(!!) were enough to hold my interest and even though I am slightly curious to know more about the library (as a future librarian myself!) I don't think I will be continuing the series past the first volume. Which is really a pity because I really enjoyed Isaki Uta's previous work Is Love the Answer?

But if you enjoy an extremely fast-paced story with magic and dragons, I do think this might be just the right manga for you!

Thank you NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for the e-ARC in exchange for a honest review!

In a land where magical beasts are sealed away in books to assist humanity in their endeavors Tohru and Yan have been accepted into The Spellbook Library a dream come true for many, except instead of being elite Sealers they've been accepted as part of the PR Team. And while Tohru could care less, he just wants to work in the library, Yan's life dream has been to work with the Sealers. Regardless of their disappointment, both are dedicated to doing their job to the best of their abilities, even if that means playing babysitter to a bunch of elementary school brats.

Any manga that's got magical books in a magical library is going to attract my attention, and I'm happy to say I enjoyed every second of this one. While we have some pretty trope-y characters here, Yan, who is loud and obnoxious, and Tohru who is the mysterious kid hiding some high level magical abilities, and finally Emel, the Princess that doesn't want to be a Princess they were still a lot of fun.

And yes, the plot itself (so far) is even a bit trope-y, but again, it was still a lot of fun. I don't think you can go wrong with magical beasts that are sealed away in books that the general population can then check out of the library. The concept is original enough that even if everything else is a trope, I'm okay with it.

Finally, the art is really well done as well. I really loved the character designs, especially since Isaki shows what they could have looked like at the end of manga. The designs they went with fit the characters' personalities to a T.

Overall, I definitely recommend this fun little manga. It's got a magical academy feel to it with some fun characters, and it ends on a perfect cliffhanger that deepens the mystery surrounding Tohru that leaves you wanting more!

As always, thanks to NetGalley and Kodansha!

This is a fast paced story full of fun and magic alike. The main characters are so different but they compliment each other and it helps them achieve their goals. The enchanted library setting is skillfully crafted and beautifully executed. The concept and setting of this book seem fresh and intriguing.
Even though this is the first installment of the manga series, this volume is already full of action and characters interactions that give more context to the world and the story. I loved the art style, and will definitely continue this series.

Interesting start to this manga series. The mcs are a bit caricature like but they have space to grow into deeper characters. To start we have the mysterious tohru who has secrets galore and seems to care for the spirit beasts. Then there's Yan the angry muscle man. Finally the princess who people believe shouldn't be a part of the library or act like a civilian in any manner.
I like the world idea and the library looks beautiful. There's magical spirit beasts that get sealed into books and stored in the library for later use. The librarians themselves work in different areas like sealing, research and restoration. Or in the case of our MCs, personal relations.

Was fun I'll read the second one!

First I'd like to thank NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for the e-ARC of this manga / comic: 'The Spellbook Library 1 by Uta Isaki.'

I could only give this one a 3 out of 5 as it felt like it was going nowhere.

It wasn't a bad journey, just... Not a lot happened and you kind of expect it to move a lot faster than that in a comic or manga of all kinds. If it doesn't progress plot-wise or character-wise then it ends up feeling a bit pointless.

The art and illustrations aren't bad at all and the style didn't bother me like it did some of the other readers, however because of the layout of the ebook, I, at first, had trouble figuring out where to start reading on a page.

All and all, not much happened, but it was fun anyway?

A land of magical things that contains spell beasts, spellbooks and so much more. A rough and tumble young man named Yan tries to leave his fisticuffs behind to embark on an adventure of a lifetime, employment at the Spellbook Library. As he rushes to the library to take the tests, he happens upon another young man, Tohru, being mugged, saves him and his valuables from thuggery, and learns that he too is hoping for employment at the same institution. Plenty of other souls vie for the chance at employment, but only a small number shall be gainfully employed and divided into the various departments that keep the kingdom safe.

I really wanted to enjoy this one since I’m a lifelong lover of libraries and fantasy. It had a great premise, but I think it fell a bit flat for me. One of the things that bothered me about this volume is that the text blocks seemed to be too large for the panels they were in and thus distracted from the equally important artwork.

A country where everything concentrates around huge libraries that collect, contain and lend out magical beasts bound inside books. Yan has wanted to be a librarian there ever since he was a child, after being rescued by a beast sealing unit. For his part, Tohru has lived a sheltered life where books were his only companions, so a library sounds like an interesting place to work.

Hundreds apply for the job, but only a handful is accepted. To their surprise, Yan and Tohru are both accepted. But instead of getting into a sealing unit like Yan wants, they’re assigned to PR department to wrangle school children. And their boss is a highly laconic princess.

This was a fun start to an English-first manga series. It was a tad confusing at first, but improved as it got going. Yan was a hothead who got constantly into fights. Tohru was more mysterious, with powerful magic that intrigues the princess. The ending was a cliffhanger, but even without it, I might read more. Art was good, but a bit confusing at times, as some characters looked a lot alike and speech bubbles floated randomly.

Magic librarians? Sign me up!

This volume was such a blast to read. Right away I got sucked into this intricate world full of magic beasts contained within the pages of spellbooks. Yan makes for a relatable character in the fact that he has a dream and is barreling his way toward it, only to be a little disappointed with the end result. Not to be deterred, he makes a new goal which he pursues with just as much enthusiasm. I can’t help but like him. Tohru, on the other hand, is very much an enigma. I have a feeling that he might be running away from something, which might be why he’s keeping so much to himself. I definitely would love to read what happens next to see just what he’s hiding.

The Spellbook Library itself is just as amazing as I thought it’d be. A giant building stuffed full of what could essentially be considered grimoires. It reminded me of Sorcery of Thorns and would love to see more of the building and how everything works in further volumes.

Overall, I found The Spellbook Library to be very enjoyable and a perfect first volume to what should be a perfect series for all book and library lovers.

NOTE: I received a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley for review purposes only. All thought and opinions are my own.

Yes, yes, a million times yes! I wasn't even aware of how much I was enjoying this until I reached the end of the volume and screamed in frustration - I need the continuation so bad! Fantasy manga has been flourishing these past few years (Delicious in Dungeon & Witch Hat Atelier come to mind), and this is another shining example of that.
The Spellbook Library is the engrossing tale of a library whose books contain magical beasts, and of the librarians whose job is to watch over them. We follow two boys, Yan and Tohru, who both want to work there for different reasons: the former was saved by a librarian when he was a child, and the latter... well, let's say he might have a more mysterious cause for being there.
The artstyle isn't stellar, but it's still quite pretty.

Huge thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review!

The Spellbook Library is a fun, fast-paced manga following two new students at a magical library as they tackle their entrance exam and try to find their places at the school. The magical library centers around the capturing of magical beasts within books to keep them contained and it was fun to see glimpses at how this all worked as Yan and Tohru try to sort their way through it.

The story is definitely more on the cozy, humorous side and I honestly loved what a himbo Yan is, it was very fun to see him trying to contain his more impulsive side and teaming up with Tohru who's a quieter, more mysterious person. The story really isn't mind blowing and it's quite tropey but it's a fun time and I'll definitely pick up future volumes of the series!

Manga isn't one of my main genres but I will try to describe my experiences the best I can. I did enjoy the concept of the story as well as the art style. I do feel like the book could have had more information regarding the Spellbook Library and world building in general. I also didn't find any of the characters particularly likeable. I would not be put off reading more of this author or series but overall not my favourite read.

Such a quick paced manga!! I loved the concept of magical creatures being sealed in magical books! It gave me slight Pokemon vibes. I really enjoyed the characters and im excited to learn more about them in the future volumes. The art is lovely and the translation was well done. Another reviewer referred to this story as chaotic and that is the perfect description. I love that this is set in a library and I will definitely keep reading this series. However, there were several times where I was unable to determine what I was looking at, which took away from the story,

That said, I want to know what Yan and Tohru get up to next and why the Princess is so suspicious of Yan, or is it Tohru?

Magic, madness and adventure!

The story is as the blurb says. The manga is perfect for beginners who would love reading about magic, found family, adventure and friendship.

The art is a little chaotic as it should be. However, the art sequences are a little haphazard.

Interesting concept. I found the characters likeable and the storyline compelling enough to keep me reading the series. I like the friendship that has developed between Yan and Tohru and am curious how the series progresses. It was difficult, at times, to figure out who was saying things as the bubbles aren’t pointed at anyone so it can get confusing. Hoping this gets fixed as the series continues.
