Laurel Snow #4

You Can Kill

Rate this book
A string of brutal murders is leaving a grisly trail across the Pacific Northwest—and drawing rising star FBI profiler Laurel Snow back into a treacherous case and a twisted personal drama she can’t escape . . .

The first body is torn apart, blood and flesh discovered across both state and federal lands. As the victims multiply, a pattern emerges—each is related to past cases investigated by Laurel Snow, with the assist of Huck Rivers, Washington Fish and Wildlife captain. When friends and loved ones are targeted, things become even more chillingly personal.

As Laurel and Huck team up again to navigate the gruesome and increasingly bizarre killings, they must also keep a safe distance from Laurel’s half-sister, Abigail, a dangerously clever sociopath. Ever since their father reappeared in town, Abigail has been convinced she must protect Laurel from his malignant narcissism—a scourge she’s sure they’ve both inherited. Huck is not spared either as a shocking development in the case touches his own life.

With the murders, and the suspects, multiplying around them, and the lives of everyone in their orbit at stake, only Laurel’s sharp analytic skills, Huck’s deep gut instincts, and their growing bond will enable them to face the demons within and the threats without—before they’re next on an elusive killer’s hit list . . .

This series continues to get better with each book! Zanetti perfectly combines a psychological thriller with romance here. Not a standalone - you must read this series in order.

Laurel (29) has an eidetic memory. She went to college at the age of eleven, and works for the FBI hunting down killers. Huck (early 30s) is the perfect grumpy alpha, with a soft side. He’s former military, and works for the Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Huck and Laurel are a perfectly balanced couple, these two know each other better than they know themselves. No drama, just genuine, grown-up conversations. So refreshing!

I classify this as romantic suspense, but it is certainly more focused on the murders than intimacy (although you do get a few tender and very hot moments).

The last 15% had my heart in my throat, for good reason.

Murder mysteries/thrillers featuring strong leading women have long been a go-to for escapism. Anna Pigeon, Kate Burkholder, Eve Dallas, Kate Shugak, and Joanna Brady are just a few of my favorites. If you liked any of those, you might like this series as well.

TW: I’m going to put this in spoilers because it will ruin a certain aspect of this story, but I feel it is important for some to know.

The ante has been upped once again.

The breakneck pace and suspense found in You Can Kill grabbed me by throat and left me breathless until the very last word. And what a cliffhanger. Best one yet. Rebecca Zanetti is a phenom.

This is an entertaining, well-written, fast paced, romantic suspense thriller. It has a brilliant, strong and capable female protagonist, an engaging male protagonist, wit, a touch of humor, murder, mystery, intrigue, a steamy romance, twists and turns, and a satisfying conclusion. This is the fourth entry in Ms. Zanetti's outstanding Laurel Snow series, and it can be read and enjoyed as a stand alone, but is better when read in order for continuity. I am looking forward to reading the next entry in this series with great anticipation.
I listened to the audio version of this novel, and the narrator, Ms. Amy Landon, does an excellent job voicing the characters.

You Can Kill by Rebecca Zanetti
Laurel Snow series #4. Romantic thriller. Best read in series order although this can be read as a stand-alone.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Laurel Snow is called to the local hospital in Genesis Valley where the last murderer she put in jail is under death watch. He still manages to escape even as Laurel tried to stop him. Brutal murder victims are now being found across the Pacific Northwest. Is it Jason Abbott finding new ways to kill, or is it someone else targeting family and friends of Laurel and Fish and Wildlife Captain Huck Rivers? Every victim is related to past cases the two have worked. No one is safe and everyone is suspect.

A reporter stirs up trouble. She’s visited Jason in jail and should be worried about her own safety but she’s more interested in ratings and scandal. And her targets are Laurel and Huck.

Laurel’s sister, Abigail, who is just as smart as Laurel, is playing a game only she knows.

Between Pastor John or Pastor Zeke, who is running the church and is there a connection to the body found on the property?

Who will be the next victim? Can they connect all the details and prevent another murder?

I’m not going into anymore detail. I don’t want to spoil the suspense.

“Icicles hung like sharpened spikes” - a great opening line to this next Laurel Snow thriller.
I feel each book in this series has gotten progressively better, and I think this is the best one yet.

First and foremost, for those reading this now and who don’t follow of my reviews, I am a long-time, devoted and die-hard Rebecca Zanetti fangirl. This is the sixth series of hers that I have read. While I absolutely love her paranormal/urban fantasy, Dark Protectors, series that started it all for me, I have also really enjoyed all of the crime thriller/romantic suspense series, like the Laurel Snow series, that she has transitioned into for many years now.

The gangs all back for this fourth installment: FBI Special Agent, Laurel, along with her motley crew of agents in the small, rural, FBI office in Genesis Valley, WA. Her significant other, Huck, a Fish and Game Warden is also back along with his K9 partner, Aeneas, a Karelian Bear dog (a massive and fierce doggie) and his Captain, Monty. I really enjoy crime thrillers with bad@$$ FMC’s, and I like Laurel, she’s a great character with some interesting quirks. Additionally, Laurel’s psycho sister, Abigail, is as crazy as ever and definitely has that totally creepy character going on that adds a lot to the series. In this installment, they’re wacko dad is back in town (he took off in book 2) and wreaking havoc – again!

The story picks up shortly after the last one where Laurel and Huck found out that they’re going to be parents. Laurel is still in her first trimester so she has a way to go and her and Huck haven’t told anyone. Furthermore, after getting attacked by Jason Abbott (the killer Laurel caught in the last installment) during his escape from a hospital (he tried to kill himself – again!), Laurel is concerned that once she does go public with the pregnancy, she will be benched, so to speak. Laurel can’t have that, especially now, since Jason escaped on her watch, so to speak. None of this is a spoiler since it’s how the story started.

Shortly after Jason’s escape, dead bodies start showing up (one of them Huck’s estranged mother who abandoned Huck when he was a baby) and everyone suspects Jason, until they don’t. There is also a secondary storyline of Laurel and Abigail’s father, Pastor Zeke, who is desperate to get alone in a room with Laurel and her mother, Deirdra, to make sure they don’t go public with the accusations that he raped Deirdra when she was a teenager. He just signed a deal to take his ridiculous holy roller show national and doesn’t want a scandal to ruin it.

This is not a standalone read! Actually, none of the series installments are standalone reads. The series needs to be read in order to get the whole story behind all the players’ lives, secrets and machinations and fully enjoy the series and all of its installments. JMHO The character development in this installment was a continuation of the character development throughout the series thus far. The pacing was steady to fast and the storylines were interesting and engrossing. The writing was classic Zanetti and what I’ve come to expect and enjoy with her work. I’m looking at an overall rating of 4.6 that I will be rounding up to a 5star review. I want to thank NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for sending me this eARC in exchange for my honest review.

I'm very conflicted about this book, and furthermore, I would even say this series, especially after this book... I loved the first couple of books, but this same old villain makes the plotline feel redundant, boring, and honestly very lazy...

I got a copy of the book several days after the release date from netgalley

Another stellar addition to the Laura Snow series! These characters are so fascinating to me and I honestly could read this series over and over...which I already have. Laurel is such a unique character and I love everything about her. Huck is the grumpy, protective, alpha hero that I also absolutely love. When he starts accepting his love for Laurel, he's a pretty swoon worthy hero. Laurel's sister and father are majorly disturbing and part of why I'm fascinated with what's going on in this series. I loved it and I want more!

The continued adventures of my favourite neurodivergent FBI agent, Laurel Snow. Too smart for her own good and struggling to understand the emotional subtext when communicating with others, Laurel is still trying to prove that her father and half-sister are criminals. Knowing is one thing, proving it is another. And they're both getting cranky about her persistence. But is one of them killing women just to make her life miserable? Or has escaped serial killer Jason Abbot changed his MO? How many murderers are hunting in the Genesis Valley?

Laurel is learning more about her own emotions, too. She methodically takes care of her FBI team and sends her mom on a long vacation to get her out of harm's way. She finds that she misses them and that she feels isolated. Except for Huck, who has become uber protective since Laurel revealed her pregnancy. Now one of her many enemies is trying to hang some or all of the current murders on Huck to complete her isolation. (Shades of book one, when Huck was also considered a suspect. I question the intellect of the management who keep believing this.)

Zanetti seems to have tied up most of the loose ends in this book and may be moving on to other things. If she writes more Laurel Snow I will likely read it. I find I’m choosy about which of her series that I'm willing to spend my reading time on, but some, like this one, are quite enjoyable.

Wow! This series just keeps getting better! I love the feeling of danger that lingers at the edges of this story with each turn of the page. I never know what to expect or when something alarming and terrifying is going to happen. Which of course keeps me turning the pages. When you add in that Laurel is a character unlike any I’ve read before I have found myself totally addicted.

This storyline, at times, gave me creepy crawlies…and it was awesome! While this book gives us a resolution to these murders, there are still issues to be dealt with and I just know Abigail is going to show us what she’s really made of at some point. The fact that I don’t know where, when or how keeps me on edge constantly. Mrs. Zanetti is a master at romantic suspense and I’m for the ride til the very end!

Finished my reread…diving into You Can Scream ARC!!!

5 chilling Stars!

Laurel and Huck are back! I was so excited to read this new addition to one of my favorite (current) series. I had thought this was going to be the final book in the series, I’m so glad that I was wrong!! Laurel and Huck are after another killer but this time it hits much too close to home for both Huck & Laurel.

0B5F6981-9C91-4651-9579-9BBA8E2A9F0D

With most of her crew gone Laurel is relying on others to help with the cases she’s investigating. Laurel and Huck are after another killer or two….this was fast paced and exciting with a chilling storyline and some very likeable characters and some VERY unlikeable characters! Thankfully, loose ends from earlier books were tied up, which was great, and new beginnings are in the making for Laurel and Huck. I was sad about one part but I don’t want to spoil it for anyone.

The ending was a shocker, I can’t wait for the next book! Rebecca Zanetti never disappoints. I highly recommend this series to all fans of romantic suspense genre (more on the side suspense than romance).

What make this series different from other Romantic Suspense is the cast of supporting characters and I use the term "supporting" loosely here as some of them don't support at all. Anyway, this cast adds a darker element that is not often seen in RS.

A serial killer escapes custody and a woman is found drowned and frozen by a river. The MO is different, so another killer has to be considered, and the jurisdiction shared as the body is on both State and Federal land. It is another complication when Washington Fish and Wildlife Captain, Huck Rivers believes at first that this is the body of his mother. When another body is found behind the church of FBI Agent Laurel Snow's estranged sperm donor, Zeke Caine, the case gets much more complicated.

Each murder is related to a prior case that Laurel and Huck worked, and Laurel's wacko half-sister Abigail Caine inserts herself right in the middle of both the case and Laurel and Huck's lives. Abigail claims she only wants to protect Laurel from their father, but Laurel has her doubts about her true motive. With people she cares deeply about are threatened, Laurel is taking no chances with her own safety and she and Huck use every skill they possess to find this killer.

My thanks to the Publisher and the Author for providing a complimentary digital Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this novel via NetGalley. This is my fair, honest and personal review. All opinions are mine alone and were not biased in any way.

I was very lucky to get an ARC of this book, Thank you, Netgalley! Honestly, this series is perfection. It had me hooked from page 1. No surprise really, every book that Rebecca writes is an instant 5 stars for me. I consider myself to be her 1 fan....Fan girling aside, this book was fast paced, and had me on the edge of my seat up until the end. I almost screamed and repeatedly said oh fuck oh fuck.... ask my mum. Anyway, I highly hugly recommend this series and book. Cant wait to see what happens to the gang next!!!

This book is what I needed. Incredible, dynamic, fascinating. I got so many emotions with this book that I even shed tears at some points. The plot twists were so unexpected that I had to reread them twice to really believe it. 🤭🤭They kept me in suspense until the very end. I was reading and I didn't want the book to end, it consumed me so much. These books, as well as the author, will be included in my top this year. I would like a couple more books to continue, but Captain Huck just won my heart and settled in it forever.😍😍😍

I was excited to start the fourth book in the Laurel Snow series, and it did not disappoint. As I found the other books in the set to be, this was a well-paced and well-plotted book. The series premises has Laurel, a FBI agent who specializes in serial killers, returning to her hometown and setting up a satellite office. Each book features a new case, with an arc involving her previously unknown half-sister and father. There is also a romance arc between her and a Fish & Wildlife tracker/agent.m, Huck.

One thing that separates this one from its predecessors is the romance between Laurel & Huck is on firm ground. It was less tenuous. Neither expected to find someone that would be a long term partner. Neither had thought that they were capable of that commitment or were particularly interested in finding someone. This book has them admitting that they want there relationship to last and planning for a future. That doesn’t mean there is not tension or interest in the romance, but it’s less will they/won’t they and more how do they navigate challenges together.

Another difference is the main case moves closer to personal connections for both Laurel and Huck. It certainly feels like it moved toward the ultimate (presumed) conclusion of the series. I enjoyed the story and look forward to more.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a chance to read and review this story. Views are my own.

Story 4.25 stars. Narration 4 stars
This is the latest of this series about Laurel Snow, FBI agent and Huck Rivers, Field and Wildlife agent. These take place in the Pacific Northwest and each has featured a serial killer. It’s also a pretty small town making this a very unusual place to feature so many murderous individuals. That said, I’ve really enjoyed all of the books.

Laurel is neural divergent or something like that as I can’t remember if it’s been diagnosed or I’m just diagnosing her. She has little people skills, humor goes over her head usually, figures of speech are not her friends and the list goes on. She has however, a really high IQ and has been very well. educated. Her and Huck shouldn’t work but they do. This story finds them closer than ever. This starts with a body of a woman found out by the river frozen to the ice. And she’s not the first one. There’s a lot of suspects to work through and of course Laurel and Huck work to find the killer. I’m going to leave it at that other than I really like the main characters. There’s other characters continued from one book to the next that I liked.
There’s also villains that I enjoyed as well. Maybe enjoyed isn’t the actual word I need here. The narrator was good however her male voices sound like each other at times and the same can be said about the female voices as well at times. So not perfection but still very good.
Trigger warning for many rapes but not on the page.

Heart-stopping action and intrigue at the center of this gripping thriller had me glued to the pages.

You have got to admire the sheer audacity of Abigail and Zeke. I was also amazed at how similar these two were, and yet so different. And how they both wanted to be close to Laurel, but each for sinister reasons of their own.

Things got quite chaotic, with Laurel’s team scattered all over and Huck receiving more unwanted attention than he’d like. I felt like there were more enemies than friends around. Abigail and Zeke were their usual unpleasant, disturbing selves, with Abigail being significantly stealthier about it. Rachel was extremely annoying as well, as expected.

The murder suspects were a bit more predictable this time, but the way it unfolded wasn’t. Laurel and Huck’s relationship was also thoroughly put through the wringer. Despite everything thrown their way, they stayed true to each other. I love the two of them so much.

I thoroughly enjoyed every chilling reveal, every Huck/Laurel interaction, and even all the uncomfortable moments with Abigail and Zeke. This series is an excellent choice if you like suspense and romance. It is best to read the books in order.

Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

You Can Kill is the Fourth installment in author Rebecca Zanetti's Laurel Snow series. Let's call this series The Profiler meets Justified meets The Blacklist. FBI Special Agent in Charge Laurel Snow has moved her Pacific Northwest Violent Crimes Unit to her home in Genesis Valley, Washington to be close to her lover Captain Huck Rivers of Fish & Wildlife, as well as her mother who is opening a shop that features gourmet tea. Oh, and let's not forget her psychopathic half-sister Abigail who has made it her mission to protect Laurel from the father they both share.

Bravo Ms Zanetti!
This is a fabulous read and 4th instalment in Laurel Snow Series.
I loved being back with Laurel, Huck and their crew in Genesis Valley trying to solve the mystery of the latest serial killer.
Ms Zanetti kept me guessing and I don’t know how many times I changed my mind on who I thought was the serial killer.
The villains in this series are ones you love to hate!
The relationship development for our quirky FBI agent Laurel and her introverted, unwavering and protective Huck warmed my heart and I am so happy they found each other.

There are a lot of characters to keep track of so be prepared.
Whilst you can read this as a standalone, because the author gives you all the backstory you need, it is the 4th in a series, I recommend you read them in order. It’s a fantastic series and you’d be missing out if you don’t!

A huge thank you to NetGalley, Kensington Publishing and Ms Zanetti for an early copy of this book.

Laurel and Huck find themselves surrounded by serial killers (willingly or unwillingly) but at least this time some roosters come to pen, though not all of them. Abigail remains a truly fascinating character, while all the others seem to be put into the plot only to die a short time later.
However, I wouldn't mind if this series came to an end because sometimes I feel like it drags a little.

I received from the Publisher a complimentary digital advanced review copy of the book in exchange for a honest review.

Read if you like: #RomanticSuspense #FBIProfilers #PsychologicalThrillers #DarkFamilySecrets #PacificNorthwestMystery

📚 Laurel Snow is back, and this time, the stakes are higher than ever as a brutal series of murders draws her into a case with a chillingly personal edge. With her FBI instincts on high alert, she’s on a relentless hunt for a killer who seems disturbingly close—and is willing to hit where it hurts most.

👨‍👧 Laurel Snow and Huck Rivers make a compelling team as they face both professional and personal threats. Laurel, a sharp FBI profiler, balances cool intellect with complex family baggage, especially with her unsettling half-sister Abigail lurking in the background. Huck, with his unshakable loyalty and quiet resilience, grounds her in this storm of danger, making him an intriguing counterpart to Laurel's intensity.

💞 While romance takes a backseat to suspense, the tension between Laurel and Huck brings warmth to an otherwise gritty, chilling story. Their connection isn’t overly sentimental; it’s deep and practical, emerging naturally as they navigate trauma and fear. Their bond is as intense as the case that binds them.

👧 Abigail is that rare side character you can’t ignore. She’s a dangerous, clever enigma who keeps readers on edge. Her motivations and tactics add layers to the story, building a constant sense of unease that lingers beyond the main action.

✍️ Rebecca Zanetti masters the balance of plot-driven suspense with deeply fleshed-out characters. Her writing creates a dark, thrilling atmosphere that pulls you in from the first page, letting you feel every eerie moment and emotional turn.

🌟 A masterclass in suspenseful storytelling, You Can Kill keeps you breathless, both from the danger at hand and the tension of not knowing who can truly be trusted. This series is a wild ride, perfect for those who crave a blend of mystery, psychology, and slow-burn romance.

📲 QOTD: Do you enjoy stories where family secrets and personal ties add an extra layer of danger?

The fourth book in the Laurel Snow series, Rebecca Zanetti delivers another exciting ride as genius FBI Special Agent Laurel Snow goes on the hunt for a new killer… this one hitting close to home.

Women are being brutally murdered in the Pacific Northwest, and Laurel Snow is on the case. But in a chilling twist, the identities of the deceased women have a connection to Laurel, and her loved ones are being targeted. And with most of her team out of town, an escaped killer on the loose, her father back in town, her sociopathic sister hanging around, and her boyfriend, Fish and Wildlife Captain Huck Rivers, being set-up as the killer, there’s a personal edge to this one. It's another exciting ride, written primarily from the POV of neurodivergent genius, Laurel, and I loved being inside her head as she hunts down the killer.

By her side, as always, is Huck, and the two of them are so good together. Despite their differences, and Huck’s overprotective tendencies, they are equals in every way, they respect each other deeply and rely on each other’s skills, and they’re a great professional team. Personally, they are together, happy and figuring out their future. It’s not all uber-romantic and swoony, but their relationship is strong (and a little bit sexy), and they are wonderfully functional. The romance is definitely in the background though.

This series is definitely mystery/suspense/thriller, and this one kept me guessing all the way through. It’s exciting and mysterious, and the ending had me madly flipping pages, with lots of twists and surprises that had my heart racing.

Though each book in this series sees Laurel working on a different case, there is some significant relationship development and build-up with side characters through the series, so I would suggest reading these ones in order.

This is a great read.

4 stars.

I like this series because Laurel is a mega genius but is very well aware of her shortcomings, ie: sarcasm, understanding emotions. She accepts help and values her team. Now her sister is another story ... Sociopath who uses her genius for evil. Her sisterly love is very misguided.

Book 4 has Huck & Laurel at a good place in their relationship with unexpected news. Then their captured serial killer escapes and another killer arrives in town. I'm not sure I'd move to Genesis Valley ... Your chances of survival are slim.

I keep saying this series needs to end, and I thought this would be the final book. Zanetti has a way of keeping readers enticed, so I stuck with it.

However, how often do we need to know that spring is late in coming (I stopped counting) or that Agent Walter Smudgeon had lost weight? (He went on vacation, otherwise, it would have probably been mentioned at least a half-dozen times more.

But, back to the story. This was a page-turner and if not for the fact that she's dragged this series too long it would likely be my favorite of the books. And though this book "ends" she's left it open for another installment, which I now hope will happen. Nothing infuriates me more than reading a book or series left open-ended. Now, I'm hoping there will be a fifth (and final) installment.

Thanks to Kensington and NetGalley for an advanced reader copy.

Another good book in this series. You get to see her Dad and sister finally brought to justice but not without Laurel and Hank paying a high price as they solve another series of murders. I love this series.
