Personal response
I read this book, Patch, to my seven year old sister, Nora. Nora thought the book was amazing, she liked when the two girls and their horses became friends. I enjoyed the time with my sister. When I was little I used to read this book alot, now I can share this book with her.

Plot
This book started with a girl named Lauren and her horse Patch. When they were at the stable, they meet a new girl named Sarah and her horse named Gold Charm. Lauren was going to take her horse for a trail ride in the woods, and Sarah wanted to come. Sarah came and took over by taking the lead, that resulted in Gold Charm getting scared by a bird. Gold Charm took off running. Lauren and Patch went after her. Sarah was so thankful to Lauren for helping her calm her horse down. They all became friends after that.

Characterization
Lauren
Lauren was a member of the stable for a while. She had a horse named Patch. She never stopped believing her horse was the best, even when Sarah questioned it. As the day went on, Lauren and Sarah became friends.

Sarah
Sarah was the new girl at the stable. She had a horse named Gold Charm. She thought her horse was better than Patch. After the ride in the woods, Sarah realized Patch was not a bad horse. She became friends with Lauren.

Setting
This book takes place in modern time over the course of one day. They are at a horse stable and on the wooded trail next to the stable. The setting is important because being at a stable helps make it known the girls have horses. The story could happen in the world today.

Theme
The theme of this book is do not judge. Sarah thought just because Lauren had an old horse, it was a bad horse. By the end of the book she realized even the old horse can be a good horse.

Recommendation
I would recommend this book to girls ages seven to ten. I think this is the best age group for this book. This book would help girls with their reading skills, and the story of the book is very good. I think girls seven to ten should give this book a try.

Good beginnng chapter book, just the thing to stimulate their imagination after 2-year-old twins got a rocking horse. Also it models a positive way of dealing with a difficult person where it would be easy to get mad or hold a grudge.

Our daughter picked up this book at the library. It was quite nice as a read aloud. The lesson of developing friendship was woven nicely into the book.

I would recommend this book to children who enjoy horses and are looking for stories to read about riding, jumping, and horses in general.

Lauren and Patch are the best! I will forever dislike Sarah though, Lauren is a better person and Patch a better horse.

This book I think is for a little bit older child then my daughter....but it didn't stop us from enjoying it. The storyline was pretty good, not real unique.

The new girl actually annoyed me with her bragging at first, but she is the new girl and often new kids do that for attention or to feel more sure of themselves in a new situation that they really don't feel sure of at all. So I tried to keep an open mind with her and typically it all worked out in the end. A nice happy ending which is all that is needed for the age group that this book is geared for.

The pictures....fabulous! I loved them and so did my little girl. I think the horse crazy young girl will love this book the most! I would have loved it if Breyer had these books out when I was a kid! If you know a little girl who loves horses give these books a try.

I somewhat liked part of this story, and I somehow even finished reading it. But, I felt like the book was mistitled, since it was about Golden Charm instead of Patch. It should have been called Golden Charm.

Also, it wasn't till page 25 or so that the illustrator realized that the author told us on the very first page that Patch is a black horse and finally decided to stop drawing Patch as a brown horse.

Overall, this book is a real disappointment.

This is a short story about a girl and her horse patches. Though patches is an older horse and not as quick as some of the others. Patch enjoys the forest trails and saves a little girl whose horse gets a little frightened.
Its a great story of two little girls who become friends, thanks to their horses.

I think if I was still a young reader, I would have stared at these pictures and zoned out on the writing. I know that this is for transitional readers, but it was just so boring that I'm not sure how long it would hold anyone's attention. Also, the character Sarah is annoying and boastful, which seemed pretty unnecessary in such a short book.

This book is good for grades 3-4. This is a good book for children who like horses and it also show people helping other people even though they may not be that nice. It's a good book for getting children used to chapter books. The genre is contemporary realistic.

Patch was a really, really brave horse. She saved a horse that had tons of ribbons. And do you know why she was scared? Cause she's never been in there.
