Sir Charles Spencer "Charlie" Chaplin, KBE (16 April 1889 – 25 December 1977) was a British comic actor and filmmaker who rose to fame in the silent era. Chaplin became a worldwide icon through his screen persona "the Tramp" and is considered one of the most important figures of the film industry. His career spanned more than 75 years, from a child in the Victorian era to close to his death at the age of 88, and encompassed both adulation and controversy.

Raised in London, Chaplin's childhood was defined by poverty and hardship. He was sent to a workhouse twice before the age of nine; his father was absent, and his mother was committed to a mental asylum. Chaplin began performing from a young age, touring music halls and later working as a stage actor and comedian. At 19 he was signed to the prestigious Fred Karno company, which took him to America. Chaplin was scouted by the film industry, and made his first appearances in 1914 with Keystone Studios. He soon developed the Tramp persona and formed a large fan base. Chaplin directed his films from an early stage, and continued to hone his craft as he moved to the Essanay, Mutual, and First National corporations. By 1918, he was one of the most famous men in the world...

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

My Lords, Ladies and Gentlemen

A lot of editing issues, decent read.

I grew up loving Charlie Chaplin. I have always been fascinated with his life. I was excited to dive into this book and get to know the real Charlie. I would have given this book more stars if it wasn't for the lack of editing. Their was a lot of mispelled words, missing punctuation, and weird sentences. However if you ignore these issues and read the content, it was good. It made me feel for the man and what he endured growing up. If you want to read this book just keep an open mind and look past the editing flaws.

In his "own words"

Wonderful, if not necessarily accurately portrayed, early memoir of the great silent movie star. Many say this was ghost written and most likely they're correct, however, this is a fun quick read that gives an early insight to Mr Chaplin and his beginnings in the movie world.

Certainly worth a read and then read his autobiography afterwards for a more accurate and poetic account of the great man's life.

Charlie Chaplin

This Kindle book

was a little hard to read because of the spelling of a lot of words. It was like someone was plagiarizing it and in order not get sued had changed the spelling. I have Chaplin's autobiography, so I will compare the two.

Fantastic book

Charlie Chaplin was one of the greatest performers to ever live. Reading him tell his life story was a great pleasure. I hope you decide to read it too.

I got this book on my kindle. it is from 1916 and a memoir from Charlie Chaplin. he takes this memoir from his childhood in England to coming to America to start up a career. he was about 26 or 27 when he wrote this early memoir. this was pretty interesting getting to read Charlie's voice and narration when he was a young man. he talked about his poverty as a child his very ill mother who ended up in a hospital and never really recovered. the death of his father.
I liked reading how he started out in the theater as a child actor. how he acted to be confident and full of himself but scared on the inside. his ups and downs as a child actor. on stage.
eventually he did well enough to come by ship to America started out on stage and was quite successful. he met mack sennett and was offered to do silent movies. at a huge price of $200.00 a week. at first he let the director tell him what to do. but he did not do well at the beginning. he came off as stiff and self conscious. he talked mack Sennett into letting him create a character and do his "own thing' and here is how "the Tramp" was created. guess I do not have to tell the readers how that turned out! Charlie Chaplin soon became one of the most successful silent stars ever.
this book was pretty good but the copy i got on my Kindle was a terrible draft. for one thing the title "Charlie Chaplin Own Story" appeared on every page. there were all kinds of typos'errors etc. how this got through is beyond me. I found it odd too that this was supposed to be edited by Rose wilder Lane { daughter of Laura Ingalls} but it looked like she did no corrections at all. and there were plenty of mistakes! it was still nice to read about Charlie Chaplin's thoughts even though he did not get his facts straight through out the book. he contradicted himself several times. nice to read about a real rags to riches memoir.

Never realized what a "Dickensian" childhood Chaplin led. Very interesting...amazingly well written; he must have been extremely talented...duh...hated that it ended just as he was becoming famous. It made me want to read more about him.
