A Hole-in-One by a Furlong
Those who know nothing about golf, prepare to learn a lot and be entertained at the same time. Those who do play golf, over half a million women just in Canada, will discover Nineteenth-Hole Heaven.
Ex-LPGA tour player turned golf pro Riley Quinn is preparing her beloved Georgia Strait-view course for the First Annual Sea Blush Charity Pro Am. Tensions run high as the tour spotlights the island venue. Riley’s life is full of complications, including her quixotic boyfriend, her divorced sister Halliday, and her ex brother in law, Pitts Wyndamere, who is still a great friend and owns the course. Though much older than Hal, and as much a father figure as a husband, he never got over the divorce. Pitts’s daughter Juet is the assistant club manager, in a new marriage with a young estate lawyer, Thomas Kent. Others have a substantial share in the course, such as Pitts’s former partner.
Problem is, a body appears on the pristine course the morning that the tourney begins. The man’s a known drinker, but he swore to Riley that he was off the stuff and would see her bright and early tomorrow. Did he fall from his condo balcony? The facts don’t seem to fit the circumstances to a tee. As a part-time British Columbia coroner, Riley is in a good position to discover the truth.
With a personal interest and villains to spare, rollerblading Riley is torn between accepting an accident and pursuing a possible murder. She’s invested her heart and soul into this internationally publicized contest, and with her chronic wrist injury, has tried to adjust to seeing her former career melt away. But her quarrelsome sister Halliday, one win from entering the Hall of Fame, insists that Riley caddie. Sparks fly between the two sisters.
The prestigious tournament approaches the first hole with death carrying the bags. Every shot brings another theory. A Japanese firm is interested in the attractive real estate, and price is no object. Will the staff lose their jobs? Too many people are lying about not having seen the dead man the fatal night. And what about those threats from an environmental group? Golf grounds with their need for water and chemicals don’t appeal to Greenies. Would their umbrage translate into murder?
Quinn is a knowledgable and likable guide to Super-Natural British Columbia. Her passion for the sport shines from chapter one:
"This is the stuff I love, and mourn: being in contention, under the gun, making putts worth $30,000….the ball is stationary, taunting and waiting, while the player is totally proactive."

Don’t spread the word too much, though. We islanders might have to pull up the drawbridges to Paradise.

Reading Nicola Furlong's murder mystery, Teed Off, makes a non-golfer like me, want to grab a 5-iron and hit a bucket of balls at the driving range or alternatively, terrorizing the fairway greens by whacking my way through the 18-holes.

"Teed Off" is a fascinating tale of the tension and energy of a ladies' golf tournament combined with Riley Quinn's mission of solving her beloved brother-in-law's suspicious death, surviving environmental threats and healing a sister bond with her estranged sib, a champion golfer. With all these things happening, Riley must also contend with the threat of Sea Blush Golf Course being sold to a mysterious Japanese consortium. Once a champion golfer herself, she deals with her sudden career change to part-time coroner and pro-golf teacher. In learning about herself, she also discovers some hard truths about her deceased brother-in-law.

If you ever want to know anything about ladies' golf, "Teed Off," provides it. Riley Quinn is a likeable character who is kept busy teaching golf, staying alive and poking her sleuthing nose where it's not wanted. Fueled with chocolate chip cookies and Rogers chocolates, Riley reaches a surprising and satisfactory conclusion to life, death and dubious characters at the Sea Blush Golf Club. "Teed Off" is another fun read by Nicola Furlong, available at http://amazon.com
in both print copies and kindle books.

This book took an age to read. The promise of a mystery whodunnit was all too alluring initially. I was chomping at the bit to read this. So the main characters worked at a golf course, there's a LPGA tournament happening in the book, yep, I could deal with that! Bring it on!

What I couldn't deal with was the ever present, and I mean EVER present golf theme running through this book. There was entirely too much golf, and not enough mystery.

The characters were likeable, but a little predictable. The seemingly never ending struggle between Riley (the main character) and her sister Halliday was waved in front of our faces like a red flag in front of a bull.

This book would have been half the size if the main focus wasn't on the golf game! Sell this book for what it is Nicola! A golfing book with a bit of a murder mystery!

A couple of things I noticed:

19% - '...don't mean (insert to) sound ungrateful...'

97% - '...peeled around the cormer (corner)...'

NOTE: I receieved a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review

Mystery, murder, and family resentments.

Riley Quinn has a good life as a golf pro on Vancouver Island, but she resents the injury that took her out of the players' loop. And resents her sister, who's still in that loop. Riley also moonlights as a coroner, to take her mind off golf. She's strong, determined and occasionally funny—and when she suspects her brother-in-law's death was murder, Riley doesn't back down.

Author Nicola Furlong takes us inside the world of a pro golf tournament, provides some insights into the environmental effects of these sprawling golf courses, and also explores family dynamics. Her prose is laced with clever lines and a clear love of the beauty of British Columbia.

I don't know if it was the number of characters, their circumstances, or their often-terse dialogue, but I couldn't get close to them. I did appreciate the vicarious visit to Canada's western-most province and the quality of the writing. Give this one a try, especially if you're a golf lover.

Furlong weaves an interesting mystery into the beautiful setting of Vancouver Island in Canada in Teed Off . The author developed three-dimensional characters as her heroine golf pro Riley Quinn solved the murder of her best friend Pitts Wyndamere and discovered who he really was. If you’re a non-golfer like I am, this novel probably has too much info on golf and golf tournaments
