i decided to dnf this book 30% into it.

while i hate discontinuing a book that i’m reading, this book was putting me in such a slump that i couldn’t force myself to continue onward.

there’s nothing that i hate more than two characters in love who can’t (and quite honestly refuse to) openly communicate with one another. this book has zero world-building and despite taking place in a magical realm, there is barely any actual magic described throughout the portion of the story that i read.

the dialogue was painful and felt like a chore to read.

the smut felt really out of place and awkward… and it made me feel quite uncomfortable considering its placement. instead of acknowledging the fmc’s upset, the mmc acts on sexual urges that feel out of place and makes the whole interaction feel like gaslighting.

i couldn’t envision the story improving despite not having any major issues with the pacing or the author’s writing so it felt tedious to keep on reading.

thank you to netgalley and second sky for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This was enjoyed just as much as the others. I like that we get more into how life is after the crystal, it's an adventure full magic and the enemies to lovers vibes are giving but I'm excited for when they have their happily ever after. This one ends in a cliffhanger just like thr rest, leaving me to want more and excited for what comes next so looking forward to the next book.

The book was entertaining and exciting at the same time, but I feel that it lacked things for me to love. The premise promised a lot, but I feel that the book doesn't meet my expectations as I thought it would be.

I found it addictive and easy to read 💗

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.'TO BREAK A DARK CAGE,' is the third book in Kathryn Ann Kingsley's Iron Crystal series. The fantasy setting and magical elements present in 'Charm a Dark Prince' (book 1) resonates throughout the series. If you're seeking a fantastic adventure featuring a strong female protagonist and a dark prince who may not be as he appears, then the Iron Crystal world is the ideal destination.

In the aftermath of the tragedy that struck in "To Bind a Dark Heart," the residents of Avalon reels from the devastating events and the shocking revelation that Gwendolyn's cat is, in fact, the Ash Demon. Mordred now faces the task of purging Avalon of the Ash Demon's malevolent presence. His immediate concern, though, is safeguarding Gwendolyn — and his own heart by extension. The logical solution appears to be sending her back to Earth. Yet, unbeknownst to both, Avalon has its own designs, and Gwendolyn's return to Earth is not part of them.

In this latest installment, I had hoped Mordred and Gwen would finally communicate and cease keeping secrets from each other. But true to form, they kept silent, secrets piled up, and trust issues lingered. Despite my growing frustration with them, I couldn't help but love them both. Gwen has transformed from the frightened Kansas girl in "To Charmed a Dark Prince", into a self-assured heroine. Mordred has come to realize that good intentions did not justify the methods employed to keep the elementals in check.

"To Break a Dark Cage" may not have matched the first two books in suspense and action, but it was still an enjoyable read. Sure, there were a few letdowns. These, however, didn't stop it from being a magical trip into the mystical world of Avalon.

The book ended with a cliffhanger, but the note on which it ended came as no surprise—I anticipated it. Now, the big question is whether Gwen will use her new gift to curb the elementals' thirst for violence and power. All in all, it's a worthy addition to the series and a must-read for fantasy romance enthusiasts. This review was originally posted on Totally Addicted to Reading

Thank you NetGalley for the digital copy of this title!

In this third installment of the series, Gwen is sent away to return to Earth so that Mordred can finish what has been started. He wants Gwen to be safe at all costs. But Avalon has other plans. Gwen must find a way to protect innocents, her friends, and the man she loves from disaster.

I am such a fan of this series. I had not read any of these books before NetGalley approved me for a review. I knew right away that this wasn't one of those series that you could just pick up and book 3 and be ready to go. So I purchased books one and two for my Kindle to prep. What a great choice! I'm in love! Take me to June immediately so that I can get my hands on book four.

Before delving into the details, I'd like to point out an initial mistake I made when requesting this book: I didn't realize it was the third volume in a series I hadn't read. This made it difficult to fully grasp the plot initially, as I wasn't familiar with the characters and events from the previous installments. However, despite this initial obstacle, I was able to gradually immerse myself in the story and appreciate the medieval fantasy elements that characterize the novel.
"To Break a Dark Cage" is a medieval fantasy with fairy tale elements that, if I understood correctly, serves as a retelling of some event related to King Arthur. The plot revolves around Mordred and Gwendolin as the protagonists, although being the third book in the series, I would have preferred to have a better understanding of their previous developments.

The "spicy" parts of the novel made me cringe a bit, as they weren't entirely to my taste, but I acknowledge that they may be appreciated by those with different preferences.

Despite the initial difficulties, I enjoyed the fantasy elements present in the book, although I won't be reading the sequel due to the final cliffhanger and the need to catch up on the first two volumes for a complete understanding of the story. Overall, "To Break a Dark Cage" is a novel that has its merits, but requires prior knowledge of the saga to be fully appreciated. Would recommend tho.

Godddd, these books are GOOD. I really enjoy that Mordred is actually morally grey and not a good guy in disguise. Like the dude is a tyrant totally down with imprisoning and murdering an entire class of people because they’re a pain in the ass and it’s for the “greater good”.

Still a big fan of Gwen and the fact that she’s not reactionary and is freaking Switzerland with her neutrality. Was hoping this might be her villain origin story, but she doesn’t seem to be jaded yet. But go on and stage your peasant uprising, girl. Vive la révolution! Liberté, égalité, fraternité !

I’d like to nominate Doc and Eod for best supporting actors. Big fan of Doc, would love to see more of him in book 4.

I would have given five stars but we’re using the same plot device to create romantic tension as the first two books - Gwen keeping a secret and “betraying” Mordred. It also repeats the whole separation/dream visits of the second. We’re going to need some fresh takes for book 4. Also, we had smut at 4% and not again until 70% which felt a tad sparse, but quality over quantity and at least we’ve got plot!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.

A big old eh. Disappointed in the build up to a big fight, and such a lacklustre scene. Gwen is a bit pathetic. Morded isn’t good angsty, he’s annoying angsty. This has been such a dragged out idea tbh, wish I enjoyed it more but nope.

ARC provided via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

I want to preface this by saying that I was not aware this was a series when I requested this ARC but in order to be as impartial as possible, I read book 1 and 2 so I had context for the ARC read.

Both the first and second book were okay and it seemed like there was going to be a great redemption and character development opportunity for Gwen but what we got was… subpar. In order for my reasoning to make sense I first need to discuss the magic system.

I understand that books written within the realm of King Arthur are common and offer a variety of different retellings. While I can appreciate this, it should not be used as a way to avoid world building or explanations of the magic system. There is absolutely no world building, everything is just… is. This goes in coordination with the magic system. With all these powers being shown and existing in the book, you would think there would be some explanation for them but there isn’t. It also makes no sense to me how Gwen, who has pretty much all the elemental powers, has no vote in a trial, but elementals, who only possess one power, have a vote. In any normal fantasy story, Gwen would be more powerful and valued as such. There should have been some kind of explanation for all of this other than that it is just the way it is.

All of that being said, given the way the plot was being driven by Gwen becoming something more and wanting to save everyone, you would’ve expected her to actually do something or help right? Yeah, no. That never happens and nothing goes her way. Which is fine if the next book will dive into her new opportunities, which I don’t see happening.

Also, I’m all for spice but why are characters doing it right before a big battle or using it as a form of communication after a disagreement? Not ONCE did it feel like the characters actually communicated and talked about their issues or ever opened up to each other and that’s probably why Gwen feels like she can’t tell Mordred anything.

All in all, if you are looking for a silly little story with no world building, no established magic system, and some spice… this series is for you. It may have just not been my taste but I want a little more substance to books.

What a stinger of a book...Gwen really has come into her own lately! She’s strong and passionate and Avalon just won’t let her go! She fights for what she believes in, swears like a trooper and is one of my favourite FMCs ever.

What I have to keep remembering is Gwen is still young, naive and just juiced up on magic. Her actions, albeit good in nature, are distorting things and they keep hurting the one she loves the most….Mordred.

Gah, his story! His pain, pressure and his beliefs are his downfall. He is madly in love and has no idea how to behave because of it. Things are falling apart.

Grinn the demon aka the bastard cat. I just want a happy ending for him. Despite everything he is doing, has done and will do, he is written in a way where you just can’t help but want it all to be ok for him! Kudos to Kingsley for this.

Because of how well Gwen is written, we feel exactly what she feels, because she wields it so. Avalon yields it so. I loved this instalment, but the best character…DOC! My god I love that little drunken baffoon. He is equal parts endearing and infuriating! He also makes me laugh. With him by Gwen's side, well it will make the final book in this quartet the most interesting.

War is coming and I fear no one is safe. (Although I hope Zoe is!)

What an instalment to the series! So much to digest, unpack and think about whilst taking in all the sights sounds and dreams. *Sigh* plus add a bit of added spice and wow.

Madeline Pell’s narration is just spot on again and I love her voice for the characters. So much so that I have bought the 4th one ready to go and blitz in a day as I have to see this final outcome!

I’m not ready for it to be over yet.

I'm still liking this series, but it's also starting to feel like the same thing over and over. I tire of Gwen keeping so many secrets from Mordred because she makes assumptions about how he would react if she told him the truth. And it's always Gwen being torn between supporting Mordred and stopping him. At three books in she should be pretty decided on where she stands. By the end, it seems she has made her decision, but she doesn't really fight all that hard for it. I do so love the violent relationship still between these two though, and Gwen's ability to forgive him for pretty much everything is impressive as hell.

I was excited to see where we would go from the end of the last book when Gwen was a normal mortal again. I probably should have seen it coming a mile away, but I was annoyed when Mordred decided to almost immediately send her back to Earth. Don't get me wrong. I totally get why, it just seems like he could have tried anything before doing that. Thankfully though, a badly worded order to return Gwen home has her staying there. Doc is there waiting with all his crazy to help speed things along without changing anything and Gwen soon finds herself asking the land itself for a way to protect the innocents and Mordred. Her request is granted, but she has no idea what she has become because she can control seemingly all the elements and even gets her dragon wings back. She has no plan but is still determined to try and stop Mordred and Grinn from killing each other.

The dream sharing thing is back again too. Only this time with both Mordred and Grinn....so that was awkward. And frustrating because Mordred believes Gwen to be on Earth when she's literally right there and she won't tell him.

I don't consider it a spoiler to say that Gwen failed in her attempt to have both Mordred and Grinn survive the final confrontation. Because, really, who ever thought she could? I can't even say that she gave it a valiant effort because it was halfhearted at best. And of course that means that now Mordred has to pay for what he did to the other elementals. A punishment that I feel was ridiculously unfair and wrong. Being the martyr that he is, Mordred doesn't put up any fight against this despite finally having a non mortal Gwen by his side again. He does give Gwen the choice though, do they fight against them all and gain his freedom by bloodshed or will her kindheartedness win out and she let him go. Which leads us to the very end and Gwen finally having some sort of plan. It's anyone's guess if this will believably work out though.

I'm of course looking forward to the next book, I just REALLY hope we get more Mordred than the tiny bit I think we will considering his situation.

This is one of those series I find myself truly enjoying - the story, the plot, the banter. This is book 3 and it leaves you wanting for more, and I need to know what happens to Gwen and Mordred.
This is a quick and really entertaining read and I recommend the series to anybody who enjoys a good portal fantasy, great banter, a true morally grey MMC (who is a bit of a softie) and an FMC who gets to grow and finds herself.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
HEA: cliffhanger
spice: mildly open-door spicy scene
TWs: violence, abuse, murder, torture, dubious consent,
standalone: book 3 in The Iron Crystal series
final thoughts: This book, like the rest of the series so far, ends on a cliffhanger and leaves me wanting so much more! The cover art continues to be beautiful, the storyline is fast paced and full of adventure, and these cliffhangers (as much as I hate them since the next book isn’t available for immediate consumption) leave me wanting more in the best way.
We learn more about the MCs in this story along with seeing how the elementals have handled being freed from the crystal. I’m loving the enemies-to-lovers-to enemies-to-lovers-to enemies LOL but I just need that HEA ASAP!

Thank you Kathryn and NetGalley for proving me with an ARC!

To Break a Dark Cage is book three in the astounding Iron Crystal series by Kathryn Ann Kingsley.

To Break a Dark Cage takes place right where book two, To Bind a Dark Heart ends. In the battle for Avalon and the battle between two evils, one being the morally gray MMC, Mordred the Prince of Iron, and the other being the Ash King and demon, Grinn, Gwen loses the abilities she had came to be with when she arrived in Avalon from Earth.

Mordred tries to send Gwen back home to Earth but Avalon has a mind of its own and decided that Avalon was her home. With not actually returning back to Earth, Gwen is determined to save Avalon and try to prevent more death from occurring, but in war that is hard to do. Gwen works to save both the man she loves and the demon before it's too late and Avalon gifts her the power in order to try to do so. However, in the battle to save Avalon there are costs to everything.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 / 5
🌶️🌶️🌶️/5

I have actually been highly anticipating this book since discovering the series and I have absolutely loved the series thus far.

This book is absolutely amazing, I have loved the banter between characters and the character development of Mordred and Gwen. Gwen is becoming more confident in what she can do on Avalon and Mordred is understanding that the treacherous things that he has done have not been good but still struggles with his anger and aggression in certain aspects of the book.

I love Kingsley's writing and I think it was beautifully done. However, compared to her first two books in this series, this one was not my favorite but I still absolutely adored it and devoured it in one day. I do wish we got to see more of Gwen and Mordred working together rather than being separated for a good portion of the book and then back together like in the other books and (SPOILER) it seems that book four is going to be set up in a similar way, which is just a little too repetitive but that is my only complaint about this book! I am extremely excited for book four nonetheless.

Also a little side note I know this is kind of a dark fantasy book, however, for me it is kind of a comfort read! The character banter really makes it that way for me and the dark themes aren't too overbearing.

A Thoughtful Journey Hindered by Familiar Patterns

First of all, I’d like to express my gratitude towards Netgalley, Second Sky and Kathryn Ann Kingsley for generously providing me with a free advanced reader copy. This review is entirely voluntary, and I want to emphasize that it truly reflects my genuine emotions and thoughts about the story.

Star Spice ⭐️⭐️(½) rating 🌶️🌶️🌶️

Venturing into the pages of "To Break A Dark Cage," the third installment in the “The Iron Crystal series,” proved to be a journey marked by both promise and familiar frustrations. The extended duration it took to complete the book nearly led me into a reading slump. Once again, the separation of the main characters dominated much of the narrative, with Gwendolyn's path diverging from Mordred's for the majority of the book. While her journey held its own sort of intrigue, I couldn't shake the frustration of yet another separation from Mordred which could’ve been solved earlier if they just communicated. Add in the lack of character development and it left me feeling disappointed, especially considering my initial excitement for the book. Although the series could have found closure following a pivotal death, I understand the author's decision to continue the storyline.

Mordred's character development and their romance when reunited, provided a little highlight which added something to the narrative. However, despite these elements, I couldn't fully immerse myself in the story. My dissatisfaction stemmed from Gwen's character arc, which aside from the separation, felt unchanging and unfulfilled. Despite her aspirations of wielding powers to save others, her “growth” felt limited, lacking the progression I had hoped for. Witnessing her ongoing struggle with her abilities, particularly after two previous books of anticipation, became tiresome. This was the moment for her to embrace her powers fully, yet once again, the reader was left wanting, with the possibility of another installment on the horizon.

The lack of substantial worldbuilding and explanation of the magic system only served to aggravate my frustration. With each installment, I yearned for a deeper exploration of Avalon and its mystical elements. However, when Gwen finally gained some semblance of magic, the author missed the chance to fully utilize this opportunity for a deeper exploration of the magic system and worldbuilding, leaving me yearning for more yet again.

Amidst my reservations, I remain somehow intrigued by Gwen's journey and eager to see its conclusion. However, my enthusiasm is tempered by the hope that the fourth book will bring closure. I'm uncertain if I can endure another installment if it follows the same patterns. I long for Gwen to break free from her innocent façade and fully embrace her powers to save those she cares about. If the next book fails to deliver on this promise, I fear my journey with the series may come to an end.

5! ♡

This book was everything!! From start to finish, I was obsessed with this! This had everything and more that I wanted from Mordred! The opening scene was insane and I am so here for it! The tension, the spice, the plot was chef's kiss! I could not sit still listening to the audiobook because it was incredible and my jaw was on the floor multiple times throughout this book!

This felt like the first book and had so many elements that I loved! We got to see more of the side characters, the plot was giving and I could not put this book down! At one point, I loved Grinn more than Mordred because he was so complex, layered and still so hell bent on evil and destruction which I was so here for! His back story broke my heart into a million pieces yet it made so much sense for his character and the reason for his actions. But then he goes and dies! Like I know he wanted to and gave himself up, but I still felt a piece of my heart break for him because I truly loved his character so much! When he put his head on Gwen's lap while he was dying, I wanted to blubber like a baby.

I also loved Doc who was so much fun to listen to because he was so weird and strange in the best way. He reminded me so much of Merlin and the vibes were incredible! I loved how he helped Gwen and never gave up on her. Their relationship was so cute and heartwarming and the banter between them was everything! However, I was not expecting Gwen to become a witch which was so cool and made so much sense for her character. She finally found her purpose and Avalon saw that in her. She really grew into her character and became so powerful and brave and I loved seeing her growth. Now she had magic, she could finally match up to Mordred in ways and challenge him too. Her powers were really awesome and I am excited to see what she does with them!

Once again, this book ended on a whirlwind of action and chaos and I need to know what happens next! I was not expecting them to put Mordred into the crystal but it made sense to the story and I am so intrigued to see what Gwen is going to do next! ⋆⭒˚.⋆

Another fun outing for this series! Rooted in King Arthur mythology and mixed with the grumpy/sunshine vibes of Beauty and the Beast, what's not to like? Kathryn Ann Kingsley does such a great job creating digestible stories with plenty of fantasy elements and plenty of spice, and this was no exception. Mordred may be one of my favorite MMCs out of all the ones I've read from her. I like 'em broody and murdery, what can I say?

Picking up right where we left off in book 2, the elementals (including the demon Grinn) are free of the iron crystal and chaos is sure to follow. Mordred attempts to send Gwen away, back to Earth, to keep her safe... Gwen has other ideas. The two main characters grew and evolved so much in this book, which was great to see. Gwen gets stronger and stronger, speaking her mind and coming into her power. Mordred, by contrast, finally begins to learn to relinquish control and extend trust to those around him. (To his own dismay.) We even got to learn more about Avalon in this book, why it is the way it is and how it came to be. Eagle-eyed readers familiar with the Maze of Shadows series may even find an Easter egg along the way!

There were a couple of plot points that didn't unfold as I had expected, but with this being the penultimate book, I really should've expected that things would be looking pretty bleak at this point. I have every faith that the series will end in a way that's both satisfying for the reader and makes sense for the characters. Kathryn Ann Kingsley hasn't let me down yet!

If you're looking for an easy, fun escape into fantasy romance with a dark edge, look no further! And thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the DRC of one of my most anticipated books of 2024!

Thank you so much to the author and the publisher, Second Sky, for sharing an ARC of this book with me on Netgalley!!

“He would have to send her home.
He loved her. He had vowed that once he had her back, he would never, ever let her go.
But to protect her... he had to send her away.
And he would be forced to say goodbye.”

“Avalon was the dream of gods.
And they had chosen her to help save it trom itself.”

Third book in the iron crystal series and omg I need more!!! For some reasons I thought this would have been the last one … oh how gladly wrong I was!!! This is Mordred’s last stand against the demon Grimm but first he has to deal with everything that has happened so far with Gwen. Their passion and love for each other is unmatched and they can work through it the only way they know how to… fighting. The angst between them is amazing to read and it is such a source of excitement for me !!! I was a fan of the series from book one but the more I read, the more I realised that I don’t want this to be over! More fightings, more powers, more secrets and more spicy times between Gwen and her dark knight. So many things happen in this book and I honestly can’t wait for the author to reveal what she is up to with this series and these characters. I feel like we are in for a long ride here and for some surprises and I need to find out what it is all about!

"And we can dream together until death takes me."
"I love you, Mordred."
He let out a small breath. "And I shall cherish those words you wrote to me, Gwendolyn Wright. For they are a kindness not once ever spoken in this world."

"I am going to make certain you never forget me," he murmured to her. "I am going to make certain that any lovers you take in my absence will pale in comparison."

Thank you NetGalley and Second Sky for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review!

I will preface by saying I did not read the other books in this series which is my own fault, but didn’t realize this wasn’t a standalone/first in its series. That being said, I did feel like there was enough description and detail provided that I was easily able to pick up where things had been left off and all of the plot lines and relationships made sense to me.

I really struggled with this read. I started off with super high hopes and was immediately drawn in after the first few pages. I liked the initial world and relationship building and was eager to get into the rest.

However, very quickly I felt like things were just dragging. I’ve heard nothing but great things about Kathryn Ann Kingsley’s writing, and yet this just did not deliver. It almost felt like they were trying to squeeze in every possible fantasy/magical trope into one world. Just felt like a bit much for me.

While I did like our FMC and MMC, I felt like they were both just too stubborn and the entire book was just one dragged out conflict. There didn’t feel like any real resolution or closure, other than Mordred and Gwen finally admitting their feelings to one another. I was waiting for more redemption for Grinn but other than one or two sentences, I was left feeling pretty indifferent about him and wanting to shake Gwen for loving him still.

While there were elements of the storyline I’d enjoyed, and I am somewhat curious as to what will happen next, I don’t really see myself picking up the next book in this series.

1.892/5 DNF @ 51%. I kept going. I had nothing better to do but if the word “suck/sucked” was used one more time… or if she mentioned she loved Mordred… I really enjoyed the the Unseelie Prince saga, besides the last book’s lame and predictable ending. Unseelie Duke and Unseelie Wish were gold. However, this adventure falls flat for me. It’s the FMC/MMC relationship. It’s missing something. She is young, naive and ditsy. And he, despite being thousands of years old, is immature and too moody? Stuck in his ways?! Really lonely but won’t get out of his own way? Don’t even know how to describe it honestly. I was painfully bored with them! They are both bland.
Too much self reflection as well, on both their parts. Repeated thoughts on a loop. Caught in both their heads with their thoughts, which are repetitive, obnoxious and obvious - “that sucked. I hate this. I love him. He can’t die. I have to protect her. I can’t trust her. Everyone betrays me.” over and over. They don’t even bother to say it out loud to each other. All they had to do was communicate.
No cool world building even though we are in a magical land. Main secondary character is the dog, lot about the dog. She got her power again too easily. I don’t know. It was a chore to read.
Do what you wish but I would suggest trying something else. 3rd book is SLOW. Wandering around. No one knows what’s happening. Who’s gonna kill who?! Despite brink of war, no one can die! No way Jose. Not on her watch. Found myself skipping pages. Just trying to end it and couldn’t even make it. Could have cared less. Blah at best.

Completion @ 100%

I give up on this series, it's gotten worse with every installment.

Gwen went from being a silly but endearing girl to someone who's only super power- EVEN WITH ALL THE MAGIC IN THE WORLD, is to cry and whine. I don't expect a lot from my cheesy romance books, but goddamn can the main character do something, anything at all, for herself. Why give her so much magic and shit, if she doesn't do anything worthwhile with it?

Not to mention the horrible sex scenes put in the worst places, dude read the room? Also this was never enemies to lovers, I hate that tag-line. I was fine with it, but the whole series has the same plot line in each book. Gwen keeps a big secret, that if she just told the Iron Prince upfront, would pretty much solve everything. She has to keep "betraying" him in the shallowest and stupidest of ways, because she's too dumb to be actually malicious.

I don't know what happened for the quality to nose-dive. This really started to read like bad-fanfiction, the characters say the word "fuck" in every other line. I don't even care what happens to these characters anymore. The last book was a slog, but this one had me bursting out in laughter for how ridiculous it was. From the poorly timed sex scenes, to the repeating misunderstanding plot-lines, and that ending- wow.

A forgettable book I won't remember by daylight.

The small recap at the beginning was really helpful. It made it so easy for me to jump back into this series.

The pacing was good, overall. There were a few times where it slowed a little but it soon picked up again.

I loved Mordred and Gwen. Their banter and chemistry was perfect. Although the miscommunication trope made me want to bang their heads together at times 😂. The steamy scenes were perfectly done and I found the interactions between Mordred and Gwen emotional and passionate.

I liked the side characters, especially Doc and Eod (the dog). I'd love to get some chapters from Doc's POV because he's so weird 😂.

The world building was nice. I got more of an idea about Avalon, its magic and the history.

I did find some things a little repetitive, for example, the shared dreams, Gwen's magic coming and going and Gwen's indecision.

The ending was good and I can't wait to find out what happens next!

*Thank you to @Netgalley, the author, and the publishers for providing this ARC. This is my own opinion and an honest review, which I am leaving voluntarily*

Three and a half
I'm always up for a new take on Arthurian legend so was eager to read this. Sadly I hadn't realised it is the third in a series so kind of went into this blind. Ok Mordred is this big possibly bad anti hero who clearly dominates all around him but his passion for Gwen knows no bounds. Sadly Gwen has in his eyes betrayed him and their relationship isn't exactly in a good place but to protect her Mordred decides to send her home. Ok sounds simple but the magic isle of Avalon has other ideas and pretty soon Gwen is sneaking about trying to understand her new role.
Clearly I've missed a lot although there are a few snippets that helped me understand a little of what has previously happened. Essentially Gwen spent several years looking after a cat who was actually a Demon and trust me he wants to destroy Mordred and all of Avalon big time ! If this series has led up to this then I have to say the big confrontation just happens pretty quickly and then bam other enemies of Mordred step up leaving the couple in even more of a pickle for them to escape from in the next book. I feel for me that the romance lacked a lot and I didn't find the intimate scenes smexy at all which was a shame. I will say though that the way it ended actually makes me want to read more so that's definitely a positive note.
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

This is the third book in this fantasy romance series, where we follow Mordred and Gwen in saving Avalon.

Wanting to protect Gwen, Mordred thinks he's sending her 'home', back to Earth where she would be safe. However, Avalon has different plans - and puts her right back onto the island. Here, Gwen must discover how she can put a stop to this impending war between Mordred and the Ash King, Grinn, before it's too late.

Like the previous two in this series, I flew through this book. However, I would have liked to see more in the final battle between Mordred and Grinn - it's been building up for the last couple books and it was over quite quickly.

Mordred and Gwen definitely need to work on their communication skills! They're both trying to keep one another safe, but too scared to say how they really feel. I was glad that they had time within their dreams to say it, before it could have been too late.

I'm definitely intrigued as to how the next book will play out after the ending of this one! We need a happy ending for Mordred and Gwen.

Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for this copy. This review is voluntary.

HAPPY PUBLICATION DAY!

I would eat my pants for an ARC of the next book. Can’t wait till they go live.

First off I would like to thank Second Sky for approving my first ever ARC on NetGalley back in August. If not for them, I’m not sure if I would have ever discovered the Iron Crystal series, & I am SOOOOOO happy that I have been reading this series.

I have had an absolute blast reading and listening to all of the books. I think the length of each is perfect(250-300pgs). The narrator for the audiobooks is a a very talented delight! She embodies the characters extremely well. These books have all been equal parts adventurous & equal parts SEXY & I am eagerly anticipating the next books release.

To Break a Dark Cage definitely felt more like an interlude, however I really love how the plot is developing with each book.

Highly recommend these for anyone looking for an easy to read or listen to fantasy book. These are Arthurian Romantasies with morally grey characters & an elemental magic system.

This 3rd book in the series had major Wizard of Oz/Alice in Wonderland vibes.

Thank you to the author, the publisher & to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for my review.

So I’ve gone through most of the bad reviews on this book and what I’ve noticed is people are not reading the first two books and they’re talking about how the smut is bad. This is not a smut based series. The whole point is not the smut and also a few other things I’ve seen is the fact that people are saying well they’re just keeping secrets and they won’t tell each other things. Yes it has gone on for a while, but she got sucked into a fantasy world. She doesn’t wanna die and she doesn’t want other people to die so she has to lie and keep secrets and that’s not helping mordreds case either because she’s not telling him everything (because she’s scared and nervous literally in the first two books she has an anxiety disorder and she has panic attack attacks, so ) which means he can’t tell her how he feels so like What do you expect? So I would say just read the first books before you read this book and know that it’s not solely written around smut I got the first book for free off of book Bub and I literally bought Kindle unlimited because the first book was so good so I could finish the series and I started this series a week ago in conclusion I love this series

Pause a moment at the eye candy cover art—The striking glow with the fiery hair makes it eye-stopping material. This book series of artwork lured me in, and then the story gutted me.

Why was I drawn into this addictive rolling saga of cliffhangers? Naive me opened this one with eager anticipation, believing it to be a trilogy (warning, it’s not!) and would conclude with at least a favorable outcome. My feelings (ego) may be a little bruised and torn from this one.

Even with this reaction, is it worth a read? Yes, this is an entertaining work of thoughtful world-building, character development, side stories, history, and a unique magic system set in a loosely based version of the mythic Avalon. Yes, Avalon and King Arthur. I’m usually a skeptic with this area of overdone storylines, but this is tangential- more like a long-lost Cousin.

Key descriptors: Sensual Fantasy Tragic Romance.

A note to the sensitive crowds: It has prolific swearing and some sensual scenes.

4/5 stars (Sponsored through NetGalley for an honest review).
