It was her first time in jail and her first time in love.
Phoebe Clyborne has always been the perfect child, and she'd certainly never been in jail. So, after being released from her first night in the lock up, the new cowboy in town is bound to get the wrong impression about the girl who has been content on her family's ranch, assuming the Lord just wants her to take care of her family and never have one of her own when she runs smack into him, knocking them both down. It wouldn't have been so bad, but later that day, Phoebe realizes he's the new foreman at their ranch.
Tillman Steiner thought the woman just exiting the jail might still be a little tipsy when she couldn't seem to walk in a straight line and knocked into him. He's not excited in the least to find out that he's assigned to work with her for the next six weeks as they plan Sweet View Ranch's first ever rodeo. But appearances can be deceiving and he starts to realize that Phoebe is not what he thought.
Unfortunately he lost everything in his divorce, and taking another chance on love is not something he's the slightest bit interested in. Will he find that God has given him a woman with the calm strength he needs to weather life's storms?
A story of finding love and hope after one world has imploded. Tillman had his life turned upside down and inside out. Then slowly one blessing after another start to show through the turmoil. When an old buddy gives him an opportunity to help build a rodeo. As he finds his faith, friendship that’s a balm to each other souls. A sweet uplifting read.
Phoebe and Tillman are set up by her oldest brother. As the story unfurls we see why—they are both selfless hard-workers that always strive to be their best. That doesn't mean that their lives have always been easy or that they have a lot to show for their goodness.
I love the way the author writes her characters so that their lives preach even when their words don't.
This is my voluntary review of a copy I received from the author.
The Cowboy’s Calm Strength is the sixth book in the Sweet Water Ranch series. It is also my favorite book in this series. Of course, I said that about the others. So, there’s that.
This book is calmer and more thoughtful than the previous books. Maybe because Phoebe is calm and thoughtful. Both Phoebe and Tillman can talk with each other with insight and courtesy.
A Cowboy’s Calm Strength begins when Ezra hires his college roommate, Tillman, to work with his sister, Phoebe, to plan a rodeo to bring needed income to Sweet Water Ranch. But maybe he is really hoping for a match between them.
The book features real life issues… Tillman did not want the divorce his wife forced on him. I’ve been there. It hurts. Phoebe’s parents died and she and her older siblings worked to raise the younger siblings. There are other tough topics, such as Alzheimer’s, bullying and alcoholism, that come up. They are treated with compassion and faith.
Phoebe has taken care of her siblings since the death of their parents. She is content with that but, feels she will never get married and have a family of her own. She is warm and loving and genuine. Oh, and she’s a little bit clumsy.
Tillman had had a family of his own and had lost everything, including his children in a nasty divorce. He is bitter and resentful. He feels has lost his identity and self-confidence. He doesn’t ever want to get married again. He just wants to have his kids. He had faith in God and believed he trusted in God, but begins to realize that he had really been relying on his own strength to build his future. He learns that he needs to truly trust in God to get him through the situation he’s in.
Tillman was hurt by how quickly those he thought were friends turned on him during the divorce. And, he was somewhat gobsmacked by how the community of Sweet Water rallied to help the Clyborne’s in their times of need.
In every book, Jessie gives me more insights into the trials and tribulations, but also the blessings, of ranch living. And she also leaves the reader with a few hints into what is to come. I am very curious to find out what life has in store for Agathe and Tobias.
I was honored to receive an ARC from the author. This is my honest review.
This book is a story of finding forgiveness for others and yourself, letting go of the anger and pain, as well as having faith in God’s guidance. It is also a story about family, community and friendship that deepens into love. When Tillman first encounters Phoebe, he is angry, bitter and determined to keep his distance from any and all women after being recently divorced. His feelings aren’t just due to the breakdown of his marriage, or having to sell his farm and his prize horses, but also for losing shared custody of his kids. Ezra, Phoebe’s brother and an old friend of Tillman, has offered him a job and a place to stay in return for help to get a rodeo up and running. Tillman has plenty of rodeo experience and wants to help his friend boost the finances of the family ranch. He never expected to find solace, healing and a woman he could see by his side in the future.
Phoebe believes that having a husband and family has passed her by. She doesn’t regret stepping up to help her older brother and twin sister raise her younger siblings after their parents were killed in an accident. Now her siblings are all adults capable of looking after themselves and she has become an integral part of running the family farm. She has been tasked by her brother to help his friend, Tillman, organize and operate a rodeo on the ranch in order to bring in much needed revenue. She will do anything she can to help save the family ranch. Her organization and planning skills along with Tillman’s rodeo expertise are needed to make this plan a success. His taciturn and distant attitude is a bit off putting, but they gradually find a rhythm and rapport. As they work together, her faith and her wisdom gained from personal experience helps to soften Tillman’s hard edges. She begins to see him as more than a friend, but there is much to consider before she tries to move forward. Is he ready for another relationship? Does he want one with her? Will she be staying on the ranch or following her twin back to Wyoming? Will the rodeo be a success? What happens if it isn’t?
There story is sweet, insightful and inspiring with many pearls of wisdom and thoughts to ponder. This book is one I will certainly re-read and recommend to others who enjoy sweet, clean romance.
I enjoyed this story and really liked Phoebe Clyborne. She took on a lot of responsibility after the death of her parents and raised her younger siblings. Now as she watches some of them marry and begin to have families of their own, she isn't sure if she has missed her opportunity for a husband and children.
The family is still struggling to keep the ranch going so they decided to have a rodeo. They have always worked together on ranch projects but this new endeavor is something they have no experience with. So Ezra decided to see if a friend of his could come and work with them to get the rodeo together.
Tillman Steiner has lost everything when his wife decided on a divorce. His marriage, his children and his ranch that he worked so hard for are all gone. So when Ezra asked him to come to Sweet View Ranch to help set up a rodeo, he was happy to have a place to live. The day he came to town, he witnessed a woman staggering out of the jail and figured she was still slightly drunk. He was surprised to find out she was actually Ezra's sister and that the two of them would be working together on the rodeo project. He finally discovered that she had spent the night in jail as a fundraiser for the school and that she didn't even drink.
Tillman is bitter and still angry with his wife for not giving him joint custody of their children. He is jaded towards woman and soon discovers that Phoebe is very giving, hardworking and willing to sacrifice herself for others. She helps him become a better man as she shares what she learned about anger and bitterness after the death of her parents. Tillman and Phoebe spend a lot of time together every day as they work on the upcoming rodeo. Will he change his mind about not ever having another relationship as Phoebe comes to mean so much to him?
I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest unbiased review.
This is Phoebe’s story in Jessie Gussman’s Sweet View Ranch series. As the siblings have been struggling to make their ranch a success, Phoebe has been the one who had to take on the mothering role for her younger brothers and sisters after their parents died. She is solid and stable and sadly hasn’t ever found her happy ever after. But then she is thrown together with Tillman, a sad and silent cowboy who is brought in to organize a rodeo. Tillman is freshly out of a bad divorce and his wife has custody of their two kids. He has lost everything, all his dreams. But he knows rodeos and wants nothing to do with women.
Soon the two of them are working together and despite his best efforts, Tillman starts to see what a good woman Phoebe is. Since Phoebe has never had anyone notice her before, she soon awkwardly starts to have feelings for him.
In true Jessie Gussman style, both of them have to learn forgiveness and trust that can only come from knowing the Lord, and that faith is tested by some very serious situations.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the way Jessie weaves Biblical truths into everyday situations and still gives us all the romantic feels as the couple slowly comes to trust each other. It’s a lovely and sweet story that, as always, convicts the reader to lean on God more and themselves, less.
I received a free advance reader copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.
This story is amazing! It is about Phoebe. She is one of the twin girls who are the eldest girls in their family of 12 children. She has never married as she selflessly helped raise her younger siblings after their parents died tragically in a car accident. She gives of herself continually, never looking to get anything in return, very much like a true mother. Ezra, the eldest brother is trying to make money from their ranch. They decide to hold a rodeo, but they need someone who knows what is involved and set it up. Ezra contacts his college friend Tillman who has just gone through a bad divorce and lost his own ranch. Tillman's ex-wife gives him a lot of trouble and doesn't let him see his two kids at all. Tillman is assigned to work with Phoebe on the rodeo. Phoebe is very compassionate and her and Tillman work hard to make the the rodeo a success. Meanwhile there are continued issues with Tillman's children. Through it all Tillman and Phoebe both learn some life lessons about faith and love. Jessie's books always contain words of wisdom and great advice for all her readers. My favorite quote in this book was "Pray like it all depends on Him (God), and work like it all depends on us." I highly recommend this book and the entire series! All of Jessie's books are well worth your time to read and learn! I received an advanced copy of this book, but this review is my honest opinion.

“Pray like it all depends on Him, and work like it all depends on us.”
Tillman Steiner is the new foreman at Sweet View Ranch. His main job is to organize the first-ever rodeo for the dude ranch. After losing his ranch and his children in a divorce, this job will let him continue working outside with animals instead of being cooped up in an office somewhere. His divorce has left him bitter, angry, and distrustful of all women. When he finds out he is expected to work on the rodeo plans with the woman he ran into as she was coming out of jail, Tillman is less than enthusiastic. He soon learns that Phoebe is much more than he thought. Phoebe Clyborne is embarrassed when she realizes the man outside the jail is their new ranch foreman. What a terrible first impression! She has spent her life raising her siblings and following the Lord, but it’s hard to not notice a man of good character like Tillman.
This is a sweet romance based on faith and love. There was no doubt in my mind that Phoebe and Tillman belonged together. I received a free copy but my review is honest and voluntary.
“Maybe he was surprised that she was putting family ahead of financial security, but in her experience, strong family meant financial security.”
This was a lovely read. Ezra stepping up as matchmaker and gave or mains a forced proximity romance through the workplace setting. This slow burn Christian romance was great and chock full of lesson (as always).
I loved the theme of having self control with your actions. It’s so important and one that I’ve struggled with in life. That temper just seems to flare to life at times. I love how this book illustrates that it’s never too late to work harder and to do better, to train yourself in a different direction. It was a good reminder to continue to fight the fight to tame my tongue (that’s actually written on an index card and has been stuck on my wall for over a year now at least).
This book tackled some hard issues: divorce, alcoholism, bullying, Alzheimer’s, and more. I loved getting some side character views and can’t wait to see what continues to happen all over town as the series progress.
I received an ARC of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
I. Am. Phoebe. Seriously! Okay, maybe not totally, but I just couldn't help but relate to her on so many levels within the pages of this book! Phoebe and Tillman, the newest ranch hand who is helping organize a rodeo, get off on the wrong foot as Phoebe is getting out of jail. Jailtime spent as a fundraiser as a favor for girl staying at the Clyborne ranch. Tillman just thinks she was locked up for being drunk. Of course, that doesn't put her in a favorable light. When he realized they will be working closely together for months...he wonders what he got himself into. The truth comes out, and Tillman realizes that he was looking for the worst in Phoebe, just as he was accustomed to with his ex-wife. Tillman was at a very low point in his life. Divorced, and denied custody of his two children. He loses himself in working to create the rodeo for the Clybornes and in the process, spends most of his days alongside Phoebe. He realized how polar opposite she is from his ex-wife. Grab this book if you love clean, inspirational romance! I received an advance e-copy of this book from the author. That in no way influenced my review.
A Cowboy's Calm Strength is an emotional story of a family that has gone thru divorce and everything they had built over the years were all taken away from the father, Tillman. He was the roommate of Ezra in college so when he heard about what has happened to Tillman he offers him a job on the Dude Ranch to work with Phoebe on getting the rodeo up and ready for summer, if possible. But, Ezra and Alaska has decided it was Phoebe's time for love and Tillman was a good decent man and would be a good match for her. Tillman has both rodeo knowledge, friends and a head about finances to do one. Phoebe is great at details and knows how to feed a big family. When Tillman tells Phoebe that they could get thousands of people to attend the two day event she finds it hard to believe as they were thinking maybe a thousand if they were lucky from around Sweet Water would come. If this rodeo goes well to get them out of the red and give them money to run the ranch on for several months would be great. And just before the rodeo, Tillman gets a call from his daughter in Wyoming that she is very sick and her mama just keeps telling her and then the brother to go back to bed. Tillman calls 911 and hits the road back to Wyoming. Not only does she almost let her daughter die, she has passed out and the kids are under 10. An emergency hearing gives Tillman his two children to take back to North Dakota. He and Phoebe had already planned on getting married and to have the kids was great news until the hospital sends the bill and Tillman finds out his ex let the kids insurance lapse. He can't bring Phoebe into a marriage with the chance of having to go into bankruptcy. She deserved so much better from him. What will Phoebe tell him when she finds out about the bill? Is their dream of a lifetime together going to happen or not?
Another amazingly wonderful book by Jessie Gussman. Phoebe is one of the twins that helped to rear her siblings after the Clyborne parents died. She has been the mother figure to the youngest of the dozen siblings. Tillman is brought to the ranch by Ezra to help coordinate the rodeo they are trying to establish. Ezra is resorting to a little matchmaking when he assigns Phoebe to work with Tillman. Tillman has lost his family and his ranch with the divorce he has recently gone through so he doesn’t plan on ever being interested in another woman. Will Phoebe help him to change his mind?
As with most Jessie Gussman books, the reader can find many life experiences and advice inside. Included in the book are dealings with anger management, forgiveness, and broken marriage to name a few. Her books are faith filled and a blessing to the reader. Highly recommended for reading.
Phoebe Clyborne has been the matriarch of the Clyborne family since their parents died. But, now, she wants a family of her own before it’s too old. Tillman Steiner has had it all and has lost it all. Ezra hires him to work at the ranch and, more specifically, to plan the first annual Sweet Water Ranch Rodeo. Phoebe didn’t make a great first impression stumbling out of jail and right into Tillman. However, a quick meeting sets things right between the two. Phoebe and Tillman have great work ethics and great chemistry. When Tillman’s daughter has an emergency, Phoebe wonders if she will lose Tillman to his past. However, Tillman returns to Sweet Water and tells Phoebe he wants her by his side forever. I loved the continued glimpses into other Sweet Water residents. I’m looking forward to continuing this series and seeing what Tobias is going to do about his predicament.
I’ve loved nearly everything I’ve read from Jessie Gussman and this book does not disappoint. There were some great literal laugh out loud moments and lots of heartfelt moments as well. Phoebe and Tillman have vastly different pasts but they both share a love and trust in God and an amazing work ethic that brings them together. I love some of the thoughtful conversations they have and how we see their thoughts, both their knee-jerk reactions to events as well as their deliberately changing their thoughts to try to be more in-line with what Christ calls them to be.
I found this to be both a beautifully enjoyable love story as well as wonderfully thought-provoking as well. I can’t wait to read the next book (and I really hope it has to do with Tobias or Pricilla!)
Phoebe Clyborne being the oldest girl in the family helped raise her younger siblings after their parents death. She put aside her own wants and desire to make sure they had everything they needed. Tillman Steiner comes to the ranch to help build a rodeo after his wife took the children and left. Phoebe is trying to accept she will never have love or family and Tillman is bitter about the lost of his family. As they work together on the rodeo they share their feelings and what they believe their faith says about their situations and start to depend on each other for companionship and strength during this time I was really looking forward to Phoebe's story and it did not disappoint. I enjoyed seeing Phoebe get her hea and watching Tillman learning to release his bitterness and anger to be able to open up to happiness again. I voluntary read an arc and gave an honest opinion.
'A Cowboy's Calm Strength' was heartfelt. Its easy-to-read page-turning plot was filled with clumsiness, a misunderstanding, an undesirable family dynamic, sadness, spirituality, hopefulness, a new venture, saved from a bully, a budding friendship, a harrowing fire, neighborly love, an Alzheimer's episode, a deathly illness, a different family dynamic, a successful rodeo, and love. Furthermore, Phoebe and Tillman, the protagonists, were made for each other and oozed chemistry. Also, I liked the author's writing style: fascinating characters in varied situations, a ranch setting, down-to-earth dialogue, and an entertaining storyline that held my interest. Overall, I liked the warmhearted narrative. I received a copy for free and am voluntarily giving my honest review.
I think the title is perfect for this book. Tillman appears calm, but inside he's an angry man. Being paired to work with Phoebe to put on a rodeo allows him to see her unruffled exterior is the real deal, not just for appearances sake. Working together allows Phoebe to learn the pain and regrets that Tillman deals with and she is able to share with him the lessons she's learned after her world was turned upside down by the death of her parents. His desire to grow and change allows him to have the calm strength required when his children need him most. I really enjoyed the gentle humor and the pacing of the story. The characters feel real and are likeable. This book is part of a series, but it can be read as a standalone. I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest opinion.
Tillman moves to the ranch after his divorce while he is still fighting for custody of his kids. This book could trigger something if you have been a child of a parent that had an addiction or, a victim of child neglect. It is well written and covers the subject very well. Tillman and Phoebe do not realize they were set up by their siblings, but they are perfect for each other. They actually meet when Phoebe is coming out of the jail so he does not have a good first impression of her. Once at the ranch he finds out why she was coming out of the jail and has to change his mind.
Easy great read that will hold your attention from the start. I received the book from the author and received no compensation for this review. These are my own words.
I had an ARC for this book, but this is my voluntary and honest opinion. Phoebe Clyborne’s brother Ezra has hired his college roommate to help plan and prepare for a rodeo to help raise money for the farm. Tillman Steiner comes with baggage since his wife divorced him, took his children, and made him sell his ranch to pay her off, but he knows how to run a rodeo and what’s needed for it. He and Phoebe work together and discover they work well and enjoy each other’s company. Phoebe has always taken care of her family and isn’t sorry. This is a great story about working together and relying on God to solve problems.
This latest story from Jessie Gussman is just amazing! The characters of Tillman and Phoebe are so well written and incredible. Tillman has suffered through so much loss, his ranch, marriage but most importantly his kids. He has become very bitter but his good friend Ezra has offered him a job at Sweet View Ranch where he meets Phoebe. Tillman will be working with Phoebe to organize a rodeo fundraiser to help support the family ranch. As they get to know each other Tillman realizes that he needs to have a stronger faith and trust in God.in order to get past the situation he’s in. I received a free copy of this book and gladly give my honest review.
When Phoebe's parents died in an accident, she helped her oldest brother Ezra raise her 10 other siblings. Now 15 years later, she is still helping out on the family ranch with no prospects for a family of her own. Tillman, a college roommate of Ezra, lost his wife, his ranch and custody of his two children when his wife divorced him. He comes to Sweet View Ranch to help plan and run a rodeo on the ranch. Once he and Phoebe start working closely together, they counsel together and see the other through Gods eyes. I love the wisdom and life lessons the author dispenses while entertaining the readers with a sweet, clean romance.
Another wonderful book in the series by Jessie Gussman. Phoebe agrees to be “jailed” to raise money for the high school. As she leaves, she stumbles and almost falls into Tillman and he thinks she has been in jail to sleep off a drunk. Tillman is a divorced friend of Ezra who has been hired to help them on the ranch and with the rodeo they plan to start. He is bitter because his ex treated him badly and he lost everything. He lost his ranch and basically his children since he has no home to bring them to. Can he find healing at the Sweet View Ranch? *I received this as an ARC reader and am leaving my unbiased review.
Tillman is hired by Ezra Clybourn to work with Ezra's sister Phoebe to put on the first ever Sweet View Ranch rodeo. Can they coordinate everything in the next six weeks?
I really enjoyed the way Phoebe and Tillman learned to work together and especially how they gradually fell in love. A Cowboy's Calm Strength is my favorite Sweet View Ranch story so far. I liked that Phoebe and Tillman are a little older.
It is an inspiring, clean, Christian romance with great characters and a beautiful happy-ever-after.
I was given an ARC of this story from BookFunnel at the request of the author, Jessie Gussman. All thoughts and opinions are mine given voluntarily.
A Cowboy's Calm Strength is fun, Christian, opposites attract romance. Ezra does a bit of matchmaking when he brings to the Clayborne ranch so help Phoebe coordinate a rodeo. This well written romance is another wonderful story from Ms. Gussman. These two have so much to work through if they are to get an HEA. There is Tillman’s anger, bitterness and distrust over his divorce and the loss of his children and his ranch. I loved watching God work in Tillman’s life and how he handled a crisis for his daughter despite the distance involved. Phoedbe was awesomely supportive. I did not want the book to end!
Phoebe and Tillman meet when he moves to the ranch to help set up a rodeo there, he went to school with Ezra, he's divorced and his wife has sole custody of the children and he has visitation, but they're six hours away and he misses them. He's a hardworker and they get on well, Phoebe is the always helpful one of the twelve siblings, and homeschooled the younger ones after her parents died. She's working with Tillman on the other parts of the rodeo and finds that she has feelings for him but hes wary of women after what his wife has put him through.
I didn’t think this story was as good as the others in the series. I didn’t understand the dynamics of Tillman’s and Phoebe’s relationship. He didn’t want to date any other woman ever again and the next thing I knew they were in love?! I didn’t feel the “chemistry” between these two. Also I was a bit confused on the dialogue.
I loved how Tillman was very involved (well as much as his ex would let him) and how he cared deeply for his children. That is the test of true character when a man wants to be in his children’s lives. I also loved how Phoebe pushed him to do better without belittling or making him feel less than.
There’s something about reading a Jessie Gussman story that makes you want to live a better life. With her books you get wonderful characters, interesting story, romance, humor, faith and a few life lessons. The Clyborne family is unusual, not only in the number of siblings, but that they have been on their own since their parents’ sudden death years ago. Phoebe might be the humblest of the bunch. She spent her twenties raising her younger siblings, helping Ezra, the oldest, with the ranch and overall being available for the needs of others. She really wasn’t expecting Tillman. Their story is one that will touch your heart.
Phoebe "runs into" Tillman on her way out of jail. She had spent the night in jail for a school fundraiser. Tillman thinks she still needs to sleep it off. When he realizes that he will be working with her to set up the rodeo, he isn't sure how well things will work. Phoebe is 36 and feels that she won't marry. She'll be the one to take care of the family. Tillman's wife left him and lied to keep the kids away from him. He is spiraling and not interested in a relationship. As they work together, Tillman realizes that Phoebe is not like his ex. Phoebe knows that Tillman is a good man, but he has too much drama right now. Another great book about the Clyborne family.
Loved Phoebe and Tillman's story. Phoebe was always taking care of her siblings after her parents died. She never ask for anything. Then her brother hired his best friend from college to help get the family rodeo off to a good start. Both had had a hard life, but Phones had chosen joy, while Tillman was struggling with anger. I loved seeing how Phones helped Tillman find forgiveness. I stayed up late to finish the book. I had to see the happily ever after. I was not disappointed. If you like clean sweet stories with second chances in life, I highly recommend 'A Cowboy's Calm Strength'. I received this book from the publisher. The thoughts and comments are my own.
