Deadly Oath

Detective Stanley is investigating a murder,” the news blared, but they didn’t know the truth—it’s my nephew lying cold on that factory floor. Few clues. No witnesses. Just silence and shadows in every hallway. I can feel someone watching, waiting. Each step I take pulls me deeper into something darker than I imagined. Then, a whisper in the dark: “You should’ve stayed out of this, Stanley."

Wendell Peeples is an American suspense and thriller author whose storytelling dives deep into the darkest corners of human nature. Known for his cinematic writing style and gripping realism, Peeples crafts stories that blend psychological tension, social commentary, and emotional depth. His ability to capture both the grit and fragility of life has earned him recognition among readers who crave stories that stay with them long after the final page.

A native of Detroit, Michigan, Wendell Peeples grew up surrounded by the pulse of city life—its beauty, its struggle, and its endless stories. From an early age, he was drawn to mysteries, true crime, and the hidden motives that drive people to cross moral boundaries. These early fascinations became the cornerstone of his writing career. His characters are layered, his plots unpredictable, and his dialogue sharp with authenticity.

Peeples’ debut novel, Deadly Oath, established him as a fresh and fearless voice in modern suspense fiction. The book centers on Detective Stanley, a man haunted by his past and trapped in a labyrinth of lies, corruption, and revenge. Written in first-person, present-tense, Deadly Oath draws readers directly into the detective’s fractured mind, forcing them to experience every heartbeat of danger, every flicker of doubt, and every chilling revelation.

What sets Peeples apart is his ability to merge psychological realism with cinematic storytelling. He paints each scene with precision—dark alleys, rain-slicked streets, and quiet rooms where secrets whisper louder than words. His prose is alive with tension, and his cliffhangers are the kind that make readers lose sleep just to turn one more page.

Beyond his mastery of suspense, Wendell Peeples explores themes that cut to the core of society—racial discrimination, trauma, justice, and the complexity of human morality. His writing challenges readers to confront uncomfortable truths while keeping them riveted by the relentless pace of his plots. Each chapter feels like a heartbeat in the shadow of something inevitable, a style that has become his signature.

When he’s not writing, Peeples draws inspiration from music, photography, and the rhythm of everyday people and places. He believes stories should reflect the world as it is—messy, unpredictable, and painfully real. His dedication to truth in storytelling has earned him praise not just for his narrative talent but for his emotional honesty as a writer.

I won this book in a goodreads drawing.

A security guard is murdered. The guard's PI uncle vows to find out who did it. Then we get a bunch of collegiate stuff, and even a chapter repeated.

Way too much telling, not enough showing.

As a Goodreada giveaway, I was excited about this book. It seemed right down my alley. Sadly, the writing was so bad. I couldn't relate to the characters. After 20% I said enough. DNF for me.
