While most parents understand the importance of promoting literacy in their young children, they often aren't sure how to do it. This book provides guidance. Taking a “literacy-throughout-the-day” approach, the authors organize the book around spaces in the home-the kitchen, bedroom, living room, and so forth-and suggest fun, stimulating activities for building children's reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in those spaces. Filled with tips, photos, milestones to watch for, and great ideas to try today, Beyond Bedtime Stories is essential reading. For use with Grades Infant-K.
I've read a number of books like this. This seems to be the most evidence-based and user-friendly, offering a huge menu of suggestions for parents, presented in a pleasant magazine format with pictures of kids. Several of the options are cheap or free, so anyone could potentially benefit from some of these ideas. The whole book would likely be overwhelming for lots of families, but it's not meant to be used as an instruction manual.
Hands down the best parenting book I have read to date. Written by three professors of literacy, language and early learning, who also happen to be parents, this book is filled with simple, practical steps andnideas to improve your child's learning of vocabulary, language, reading, comprehension, and writing. Highly recommended for parents of toddlers (age 2) to pre-school.
