Lights! Camera! Action! Jules is back to take center stage! Jules is a third grader at last! But so far, the reviews aren't good. Her new teacher makes her feel totally tongue-tied. Charlotte shows up on the first day wearing the one thing Jules really wants but will never get. And she already has homework-researching a famous person to become for the class wax museum project. But how will she decide who to be? Even worse, her after-school sitcom rehearsals are harder than ever-especially since the TV show is about to air for all the world to see. Jules needs to find her inner superstar if third grade is ever going to be a smash hit.
I was born in Hershey, Pennsylvania, but I got to grow up in Allentown, PA, where I lived across the street from my best friend, rode bikes after school, and got wet to my ankles in the creek in my neighborhood, trying to save frogs from being swept away. Then some things like junior high and high school happened and I was a cheerleader and a soccer player and a math-homework-avoider and a soap-opera watcher and an inventor of crazy-delicious after school snacks, and I was all kinds of other junior high and high school things. And then, I was lucky enough to go away to college, near the great city of Boston, Massachusetts where I learned a lot and met loads of interesting people and where I made very good friends with a lot of people from New York who dragged me back to New York City with them and well, that was the end of that. I fell in love with NYC (it took a while but then wow! did I love it), and I met my husband there, and I found my career there, and I had my kids there. And now, because I am from Pennsylvania and because there is just something about a small town, I live in the lovely Port Washington, Long Island where New York City is just a hop, skip, and a train ride away (and where it is more appropriate to blast music while transporting children than it is on the Upper West Side—not that I didn’t try).
In this final instalment in the series, Jules has to learn to cope in a new school group and with her brother also starting school it's all change in life especially as she has to juggle her TV show debut and filming after school too!
Everything is building up for Jules and we see how much it can like on the stress as she comes with so much change in such a short space of time. The book is relatable to us that way but also provides perspective as we see how much child actors must be dedicated to their future tv careers in order to keep on top of filming and attending school too.
They say leave them wanting more, and in this case it is the truth, we want more of Jules. Third Grade Debut is the fourth in the series, and it appears the last to date. Another fine read with a nice story and great characters, please consider book five!!
Starring Jules by Beth Ain was over all was a okay book. It was not not that exciting to read, there was a few parts that were nice but it was really bland. I wish it had a little more excitement then I would enjoy it more. Over all I did not like this book
In this fourth book about budding TV actress Jules Bloom, third grade has just begun, and things are not going well. Jules's new teacher is very business-like and hard to approach, and his discipline system of red, yellow, and green cards is intimidating to Jules and her friends, who aren't sure what kind of offense will result in a yellow. He has also assigned a project in preparation for the class's trip to a wax museum, where the kids have to dress up as someone they admire, and Jules can't decide whom to emulate. On top of that, Charlotte - a girl who has previously given Jules some trouble - has gotten glasses, which Jules wants more than anything.
This series started out really strong, but fizzled a little bit in the second and third books (at least judging by my reviews.) While this one still doesn't quite live up to that wonderful first volume, it is still a solid story, filled with lots of things that third graders will recognize as integral parts of their own lives. While the teacher's lack of explanation of what a wax museum is seemed odd to me, his willingness to listen to his students' concerns about his discipline system is encouraging, and shows kids that even strict adults have a more human side. I also like the way Jules's TV co-stars act like older siblings to her when she needs advice. It was also great to see which celebrity Jules ultimately decides to research- the choice is absolutely perfect, and introduces kids to someone they may not yet know about.
It took me a long time to get around to reading this review copy, so I was sure there would be a fifth book on the horizon by now, but there is not. This did not strike me as the end of the series, necessarily, so I hope there will be more! I'd like to at least find out whether Jules's TV show is successful. Also, it had not occurred to me until now, but this series is a perfect read-alike for a new series, Emma is on the Air.
http://www.divabooknerd.com/2014/09/s... Starring Jules is a lovely middle grade series, beautifully illustrated and will appeal to junior fans of The Disney Channels Hannah Montana. Jules is in show business, having already featured in a major movie, and now is on the verge of her first screening of a regular series in which she plays Sylvie, her character the opposite of how Jules relates to her world. Away from the sitcom set, Jules could be any third grader found anywhere in the world. She worries about being liked, being a good student and shy's away from attention. She has an incredibly entertaining, but sometimes annoying little brother who has just started Kindergarten, her parents promote a healthy lifestyle when all Jules wants is chocolate and the anticipation of school is enough to keep her awake at night. It was charming, whimsical and girls will adore this series.
The illustrations are simplistic yet beautiful, and allow children to visualise the turmoil she faces at school. A lovely series especially for girls under twelve who will be able to relate to Jules as a role model and friend when they need her most.
Third grader Jules is facing lots of challenges this year with a new teacher with a harsh discipline policy and the challenges of her part on the sitcom that she is filming after school. It's interesting to see how Jules navigates all the different parts she plays in life while losing and gaining confidence in some areas. It's good for her to see that teachers are all different too. Although I like this series very much and plan to keep reading, I still think the illustrations make her look older than she is.
Cute, cute, cute! This fourth novel in the series follows Jules, who plays a little sister in a TV show, as she tried to make sense of the wide world of third grade, best friends, ex-best friends and family. This was an absolutely adorable read, great for boys or girls. Highly recommended for ages 8+
Jules is back, starting third grade, bummed her former babysitter won't be her teacher, scared of the one who it, jealous of her brother, who is confidently starting kindergarten and stuck in the taping of her sit-com. Cute, cute, cute! My only quibble is that the illustrations of Jules does not look like a third grader.
This is why I need to ease up on all the Newbery reading and search out more books that my kids will actually want to read. This book would have been perfect for one of my 3rd graders this past year, but I wasn't familiar with the series. Oh, well, now I am, and I'm adding it to my library wish list. And love the Amber Brown shoutout!
Cute but all over the place! I should have realized this was part of a series when I borrowed it from the library. I might borrow it again to read to my daughter once she learns a bit more English (next time starting with book 1!).
I thought this book would be so cute for younger children to read! The main character goes through the same thing as any other 3rd grader! This book would be great for students to read and relate to.
Jules is a fun and honest character with the same flaws as any third grader. Her emotions are real and honest; her friendships and problems are spot on.
Jules Bloom isn't your average third grader. After school she's the star on a new tv sitcom. Suddenly rehearsals are getting harder, she's not sure about her new teacher, and she still doesn't need glasses, which she so badly wants. On top of that, she has to decide who to be for the class wax museum project. Can she handle third grade after all?
