If anyone had told Philip Idim that a few days after his wife and son's remembrance he'd be mixed up with an abandoned woman spotting a fresh C-section scar and her baby, he'd have scoffed. As he wasn't a people person, keeping to himself a lot, how was that supposed to happen? Yet, it did. Despite his own struggles, he grudgingly helped the woman called Sunny. He did everything personally even though he was capable of paying people to handle the situation. That should've been all, but Philip found himself smiling again and painting more than his late wife's face after three years. He believed he'd only ever love his late wife, yet, he couldn't explain the insistent pull he had towards Sunny. Was it still help if he wanted Sunny and her baby permanently?
Emem Bassey loves romance in all its forms. She writes what she terms a hybrid romance - love stories with bits and pieces of other genres. All her stories carry plus size heroines and she staunchly believes the world is filled with tragedy, so she writes to entertain and lighten hearts. Emem lives at Uyo, Akwa Ibom State and is basically a ghost to her neighbors.
Having a baby via C-section has been said to be a cause, at least that's what Sunny's fiance Stanley and his family said, He didn't just reject her he moved out of their home, leaving Sunny desolate and unable to fend for either herself or the Newborn, all of these while fighting Post-op infection.
Oneday she faints right outside her apartment, And in comes Phillip Idim her landlord, if anyone had told him that just days after his wife and child's remembrance that he'd get mixed up with an abandoned woman and her baby, best believe he'd have scoffed.
Phillip is the typical eccentric Artist who has been in a funk for three years only being able to paint pictures of his late wife. He fashioned himself as someone who would never love again, but boi was he wrong.
Witnessing what happened to Sunny, he gurgling went to help, but instead of paying for the medical care or even house care for the mother and new born, he found himself wanting to do everything by himself, if only to expend all the information he had gathered when his own wife was expecting. And all that time spent together got something cooking.
I enjoyed reading this book very much, I loved Philip as a character, very relatable story. The one where a marriage of convenience becomes that of Absolute Romance. Heat level 🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵
A steamy love story that showcases the struggle some women are put through after a c-section in Nigeria. Sunny was engaged to Stanley who rejected her after giving birth to their child via c-section. She is left desolate and unable to fend for herself and a baby while in pain and with an infection. One day, she faints and in comes Philip, her landlord who witnessed it. Philip is also battling his demons (after losing a wife and a Child) He steps in and becomes the hero of most romance dreams 🥰 It’s a marriage of convenience story which turns into a love story. Heat level 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 (Typical of Emem Bassey books ☺️🤣🤣🤣🤣) so stay out the kitchen if you can’t stand the heat. More Nigerians need to understand this about women undergoing c-sections— it is not an easy way out. Most times, it’s to save the mother and/or the baby. It’s actually damn hard! Having had a natural birth and a c-section myself, I know for a fact that the latter is so much more tasking! Imagine having to care for a newborn post abdominal surgery? Let that sink in!
You want a lesson on How to be a Man 101? Think Phillip.
I loved Phillip Idim start to finish. There's nothing like a hands-on male main character intent on protecting his woman. He was not only there for Sunny, but for baby Henry, too.
I also enjoyed Sunny. It takes courage to keep your chin up and steadily face whatever life brings your way. She was a fine match for Phillip.
Hands-down a romance novel you want to turn the pages.
This book had me crying like I just watched a sad puppy video! Men like Stanley? No thanks—I wouldn't wish him on my worst enemy!

Philip Idim is exactly who he thinks he is, and honestly, I might need to check if I can marry a fictional character. I loved how he swooped in to save Sunny like a superhero in a rom-com. The ending was so sweet it gave me a toothache, and I absolutely didn't want it to end!
This was such a refreshing read. It's real, emotional, spicy, and beautifully written.
Emem Bassey captured grief, healing, and self-worth beautifully in this book. I love how she handled the themes of single motherhood, body image, and C-section shame with so much honesty and empathy. The message blended perfectly into the story without feeling forced.
This story is a reminder that love can find you again, even after pain, and that sometimes this love can show up unexpectedly.
There's nothing love better than a book with some truth to the story. I was shocked that women/Sunny are treated this way because they have to have a C-section. The boyfriend was horrible and got what he deserved. I loved how slowly Philip and Sunny together and how he just took charge of everything. I loved the story and recommend you read this book.
