Southern Witch #3

Halfway Hexed

Rate this book
Having two kinds of magic is double the trouble.

No one expected my long-dormant powers to finally kick in, least of all me. But that's exactly what happened, and there's been magical mayhem ever since.

Now, before I've gotten the hang of my misfiring magic, a scripture-spouting posse is organized to kidnap me to "save" Duvall from witchcraft. And the president of WAM--the World Association of Magic— has arrived with an entourage to investigate my entanglement with the off-limits and drop-dead gorgeous wizard Bryn Lyons.

As I try to rescue a young woman who's tied to a mysterious brooch, a clash between the locals and the magical visitors sets off a series of unnatural disasters that could doom us all.

It has not been a good week.

One thing's no one is taking over my town without a fight.

"This is my favorite series of all time!"

I was never one to resist a good witchy read and when I discovered the first book in this series I couldn't wait to dive in. I loved it so much that it didn't take me long to pick up the second installment and fall in love all over again with Tammy Jo, Bryn and Zach.

This series is such a fun one. Throw in some magical mayhem more often than not, a mystery, good ole southern charm, that small town feel and two irresistible guys and it is no wonder I was hooked after the first book.

It isn't without its flaws or weak moments but for the most part, I have a good time whenever I read it. I laugh, I smile, I scowl, and I want to roll my eyes but all in a fun loving, I can't get enough of Tammy Jo kind of way.

And as much as I love and adore Zach, it was so nice not having him in this book. For this book to completely be all about Tammy Jo and the sexy Bryn. This is one book where the love triangle doesn't bother me because it is understandable and believable, but having said that, it was nice to have a break from it and just have it be about the two of them this time. It just makes sense to have Bryn and Tammy Jo together. Their world makes sense when they are together. And even though forces would draw them apart, you can tell they should be together.

It was so much fun to see them really work together and come to trust one another. I already liked Bryn (whats not to like) but I might have fallen in love with him. All those questions I had about him and his intentions were answered. I finally felt like we got to know him, really know him and yes, fall in love with him when we really saw who he was and his love for Tammy Jo.

I am so excited about where this series is going and even though I know Zach will be back in the next book and more than likely, get my emotions about who Tammy Jo should be with all jumbled up again, I can't wait for it.

Another magical installment in the Southern Witch novel by Kimberly Frost!

If you've read "Would-Be Witch" and "Barely Bewitched" then I know your begging to get your hands on Halfways Hexed. So, when Kimberly told me she would be sending me an ARC copy to review, I couldn't contain my squeel of delight!

"Halfway Hexed" takes up four days after "Barely Bewitched" ended. If you haven't read the first two installments, then it's best you do before you read this novel. They novels aren't stand alone, and you would could get confused with some characters and backgrounds.

At the start of this novel Tammy Jo is trying to get her life back together somewhat, by again trying her old life's love-a pastry chef. She has her first commission from an accountant from Texas Friends of Fish and Fowl, who has a anniversary coming up and wanted Tammy to do a center piece sculpture. She was happy things were getting back on track with her new life.
Since the events in "Barely Bewitched", Tammy's been avoiding Bryn. (Or at least, trying to.)
She' still quite confused of where they stand, and she has enough to think about, even before a strange package is sent to her from England. The international package was sent anonymously, which was sketchy itself, but when a ghost is attached to the item and seems in need of help, Tammy Jo starts to really worry.
Quickly after Tammy's life goes from bad to worse, while being kidnapped-twice, hunted down, investigated by WAM(the World Association of Magic) and intimidated by Bryn's pretty ex-girlfriend- who happens to be on the WAM council. Just great, right?

This was one of my favorite installments in the series. There's plently of action and suspence, more so than the first two novels. The romance is a bit more intense, and the humor and twists really pack a punch.

The characters were are great as ever, with a few new faces to add. Bryn's best friend was a hoot! I can't wait to see more of him.
As a fan of Mercutio(the In..)I was happy to see him back in action.
As secondary characters go, that cat can really steal your heart!

"Halfway Hexed" was exciting to say the least! There's enough humor, action, horror and romance to hold you over another year. Although Kimberly, your welcome to release another.. like... right now! :)

Slightly Spellbound, here I come !

Halfway Hexed by Kimberly Frost
Paranormal Romance -Feb 1st, 2011
4 ½ stars

Halfway Hexed is the third installment in Kimberly Frost’s South Witch series. This third book should not be missed, especially if you are a fan. Because the author answers many questions and reveals more about Tammy Jo and her outrageous family that have been culminating since the first novel.

Tammy Jo has decided to start seriously using her magic. But because she is half Fae and half witch her magic doesn’t always work as expected. However, her use of magic has made her a target as she is kidnapped twice in one day! Thankfully Tammy Jo is able to escape, but when she reports it to the local sheriff’s office they don’t believe her story. In addition, her ‘illegal’ use of magic is worrying the World Assoc. of Magic (WAM) - and she and the wizard Bryn Lyons (who has helped her and really, really likes her) have been put on trial. According to the WAM if she doesn’t ‘shape up’ she will be imprisoned or sentenced to death! No pressure. Except that some mysterious magical disasters are occurring in her beloved town, and the only way to combat is to use her own magic. But can a novice like Tammy Jo save the town when almost everyone seems against her?

Tammy Jo is full of charm and fire, as she is dropped into one outrageous mishap after another. I liked this book better than the second. This is because Tammy Jo starts to actively use her magic, which makes it more exciting. And also because it reveals answers about Tammy Jo’s family and tells why she should not be connected with a Lyons. (I will always love the first book the best because it introduced me to her and the crazy town she lives in!) The only aspect about this book that I wish the author had not left out was the gaping absence of Zach, Tammy Jo’s ex- husband. I love his character. He is in turns sexy, possessive, caring and stubbornly heavy-handed. While I enjoy Bryn Lyons’s suave character, there is something about Zach’s honest, down-home charm that appeals to me a bit more.

Although I feel it is possible to read this book as a stand alone since this book reveals tantalizing questions from the first and second book, it might be too much of a spoiler if the reader liked this book then went back to read the earlier books. So I would highly suggest reading them in order. (Also because the books build upon each other with more and more characters, there may be a bit of trouble keeping all the characters straight.)

Fun, outrageous and dripping with Southern charm. If you have been an avid fan you will not be disappointed. This book will keep you entertained and smiling as you try to keep up with Tammy Jo and her wacky companions.

**2.5**

I’m annoyed.

The Southern Witch novels are of the rollicking, fast-paced sort. They’re filled with thinly-explained magic, strange townspeople, and countless secrets. Halfway Hexed (the last installment?) is more of the same, but this time the mayhem lacks the inherent charm that elevated the first two books from pure silliness to decent entertainment.

Frost does address those many secrets, for which I am grateful. The prophesy is revealed, the McKennas’ lies are uncovered, and we even get a few surprising new tidbits. All these discoveries are what kept me turning pages - although I must admit that once the exact phrasing of Lenore’s prophesy was given, I knew where the story was headed. Still: yay for answers!

Unfortunately, that’s the last yay I’m going to give.

The previous books made me chuckle over the numerous messes Tammy Jo got herself into; the mishaps were farcical in their abundance. Halfway Hexed takes this to new extremes, with unfavorable results. I literally lost count of how many times Tammy Jo was kidnapped or shot at. It seemed every page included some active threat to her life, depriving the individual incidents of tension and making them all blur together into an indistinct mess. The most ludicrous of these threats were the townspeople themselves. With many of them turning into a hateful band of witch hunters, I was hard-pressed to understand why Tammy Jo wanted to save her town at all. I understand Duvall is her life-long home, but this storyline proves there’s a point where kind-heartedness can cross into stupidity. It almost made me wish Zach was still around to beat sense into everyone.

In between the bouts of kidnapping and gunplay, Tammy Jo spends time with Bryn. Over three books and a few weeks’ time, Tamara and the wealthy lawyer/wizard have grown very close. They’ve come to depend on one another through various dangers and have saved each other’s lives several times. Despite all of this, Tammy Jo holds him at arms’ length. Actually, no, she doesn’t. She begs for his help, kisses him, then pushes him away. She runs to his side, tells him she can’t be with him, has sex with him, warns him off other girls…and pushes him away again. She repeatedly makes demands, but when Bryn thinks she’s finally laying claim to his heart, she mutters about prophesies or betraying poor Zach.

Yes. I get it. Tammy Jo is torn - she knows she should stay away but she and Bryn have such amazing chemistry that she can’t help herself. Blah. Blah. Blah. This book moved her from confused but well-intentioned sweetheart to immature, demanding, contrary cocktease. She wants all of the benefits of a relationship with Bryn, but none of the commitment. I know you’re a pastry chef, Tammy Jo, but you really can’t have your cake and eat it, too. Having endured so much drama and trauma with Bryn, she should know what kind of man he is and be able to make up her mind. If she can’t feel comfortable doing that until uncovering the prophesy, she should be more serious and sincere in her refusal to be intimate.

Which leads to my problems with Bryn. It’s no secret that he was my preference of the two love interests. With his dark hair, slight brogue, and sly, determined ways he’s just the type of man I root for. Unfortunately, his tolerance of Tammy Jo’s see-sawing diminished him in my eyes. Romantic that he’s determined to win her over. Masochistic that he puts up with her indecision and poor treatment.

The final battle and the resolutions arising from it were decently delivered, though somewhat contrived in their reliance on Shocking New Info. The problem with the townspeople was too neatly settled and Tammy’s forgiveness too easily given. And the question of the future of Bryn and Tammy’s relationship wasn’t answered solidly enough for me.

I’m disappointed. If Halfway Hexed is truly the last installment, it’s ruined the fun I was having with this series. What was once a humorous, light read turned into an eye roll-worthy, exasperating muddle. I’m thankful most of my questions were answered, but I think I’ll avoid any future series by this author.

Another bewitching installment in the Southern Witch series!

Pastry chef and newbie witch Tammy Jo is back and wastes no time getting herself into trouble! First she's kidnapped and accused of witchcraft by the religious fanatics in her town of Duvall, Texas. She then receives a mysterious brooch that continues to plaugue her with visions of a woman she's never met. As if that wasn't enough, she's now under investigation by WAM-the World Association of Magic and the only person that can help her get out of her current predicament is none other than Bryn Lyons, the wizard she can't resist but has been warned to stay away from by an old family prophecy.

This was an action packed story that I could not put down! Tammy Jo and Bryn are nothing short of magical together. I really enjoyed that there was more of Bryn in this book and that his relationship with Tammy Jo is clearly defined this time around. Her sidekick Mercutio, who happens to be an ocelot steals the scene with his funny antics. More romance and laughs make Halfway Hexed the best in the series so far (this could be the last book in the series but I'm not 100% sure yet...)! It's a light-hearted paranormal romance with plenty of action, suspense, romance and plenty of humor! This is a must read for those who sometimes prefer their paranormal romance with wit and a little bit of sass!

Although third in the series and perfect as a stand alone, I recommend reading the series in order so that you don't miss a thing!

I LOVED this. I'm enjoying this series so much. In this book, I'm glad Tamara has some time with Bryn, finally. And that Zach is out of town. He supports her, accepts her and whatever she wishes to do. I'd say more but I don't want to be too spoilery.

This does remind me a bit of the Sookie Stackhouse books in that it's a small town with quirky characters, set in the south, with supernatural shenanigans which the general public is rather clueless. There is a love triangle. The action is pretty non-stop and the banter is hilarious. I do like this character so much better than Sookie. She has the same righteous integrity about saving others, not just killing people. She also has a bunch of relatives who are not always readily available and haven't always told her the truth.

So far the scenes with her men are much better in terms of they actually spend some time together, have some intimate conversations, and help each other. I hope this series stays interesting with the characters and relationships and doesn't go off into ridiculous plots and too many lovers as the Sookie books did.

This series was fun and simple. The story is silly with some unnecessary parts, but I really appreciated this fun trilogy especially after having read the longer Sookie Stackhouse series, where the storyline just never stops.

Kimberly Frost does not disappoint in her third installment of the Southern Witch series, Halfway Hexed. Well, unless you were expecting wanting to see Tammy Jo’s ex-husband return home filled with knowledge of the occult. If you are wanting to read about the craziness following pastry chef Tammy Jo and the sparks that fly when she is around Bryn Lyons, this is the book for you.

Want to know why Tammy is not supposed to date Bryn? Curious about Tammy’s heritage? Expecting Tammy to make a major, life altering decision? Find out by reading Halfway Hexed.

The town of Duvall is filled with whack jobs and they seem to all make an appearance. They do the silliest things, are full of Bible Belt logic even though they are in Texas and just cracked me up. Poor Tammy Jo! There polar opposite were the WAM personnel. Those people were jacked up in a special kind of way. I didn’t expect it all to blow up the way it did and when the storm settled the people left standing…(You didn’t really think I’d tell you did you? lol)

The only thing that bothered me with this book is SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

Zach (Tammy’s ex) is not in this book. I want Tammy with Bryn, but at the end of the last book she promised Zach she’d wait for him to return home before choosing between him and Bryn. Tammy makes a decision in Halfway Hexed without comparing the two men side by side like she promised. Not that I disagree with her selection, but she broke a promise to a major person in her life and it felt surprisingly like a betrayal.

END SPOILER END SPOILER END SPOILER

That in and of itself wouldn’t be a major deal as I’d expect it to be dealt with soon. However in the FAQ section of Frost’s blog we are told “only three books are scheduled…for the moment I’m working on books in my new series.” So when, if ever, will the loose story lines be wrapped up? No one knows.

Don’t get me wrong. The ending is satisfying, but there are several would-be complications that are mentioned as possibilities. The cogs in the way of Tammy’s happiness are put into play by Tammy’s choice of spouse and her heritage. To have such major plot lines dangling is a little annoying.

Overall I’m pleased with Halfway Hexed. It will join the previous two books (Would-Be Witch and Barely Bewitched) in the series on my keeper shelf. I still would recommend the partial series to people looking for a light-hearted, paranormal romance series. However if you hate it when there is no end of a series in sight and the author doesn’t plan to write more books in the foreseeable future, bypass this one.

I'll give this book credit for being pretty darn cute. Tammy Jo is just a sweet, likable woman you can't help but get behind. She's nice, but isn't afraid to get down and dirty when the situation calls for it. (And she's a crack shot, which is something I always appreciate.)

There was no Zach in this one, so the book focused on Bryn and Tammy Jo. For most of the book, Tammy Jo was still doing the whole "I can't be with him because of this mysterious family list that says his family is bad" thing, which pissed me off. I hate blind obedience, and Tammy Jo definitely displays that more than once in the series. If there's a part of her I don't like, it's that. I was so tired of hearing about the family's list I could have pulled my hair out.

The plot is as fast-paced as ever, which is both a plus and a minus for me. Each book takes place over the course of a week, with no time lapsing between the three books. Basically, a lot has happened to Tammy Jo in the three weeks in which the series takes place. It leads to a sense of running around from one confrontation to the next, with no breathing time in between. It certainly keeps me turning the pages, but it feels a bit exhausting at times.

The whole DeeDaw plot confused and irritated me. There seemed to be no point to it other than to add another source of conflict to the story. I kept waiting for it to tie into the main plot, but it never did.

I was also confused about how things played out with Bryn.

I'll certainly continue on with the series if there are more books forthcoming. Thus far, no word on whether there will be future books, but I'll be on the lookout for more of Tammy Jo, Bryn, and Mercutio.

I love Tammy Jo and Bryn, what a couple of witches they are or aren't. LOL Trouble seems to follow them around, Tammy Jo just wants to avoid contact with him because of some ancient prophecy of doom involving the two of them. She just can't seem to stay away, everything leads her back to his side. A strange locket shows up with ties to her family. She is hunted by some nasty Southern Church women trying to expel the evil witch, chased and shot at by a scar faced man, and has to face the magical conclave's justice. Bryn and her are still recovering from her near death and serous spell casting and not up to full strength. They must work together, the town and their lives may depend on it when the conclave comes to town.
Action, action, action, poor Tammy Jo and Bryn. I was cheering for them. Boy do they take a beating in this book. The church ladies, ROFLMAO they get it, just perfectly ! The mystery of the locket leads to an unexpected place and is a wonderful story itself. I loved this book, It is not to be missed. I have loved all three of them. Ms.Frost writes a story that leaves me smiling before I go to sleep at night. She is one of my favorite authors.

The third installment of Kimberly Frost's Southern Witch series is by far the best in the series to date. The author really comes into her writing in this novel. Many loose ends are tied up, but more holes are still left to be filled by more installments.

In Halfway Hexed, not only is Tammy Jo being stalked by a group of townspeople that think she is a witch, but the WAM is also back to try to woo her over to their side of the world. She and Bryn again join their magic together to fight the forces that are against. In the process, Tammy Jo learns more about Bryn and his past. She also learns alot about her family and where her mother and Aunt have been. Aunt Mel finally returns in this installment to answer some of Tammy Jo's questions. Who will Tammy Jo choose to spend her life with? Will her family's prophecy keep her from being with Bryn?

This is a fun, easy, fast-paced read. There is more action in this novel than the previous two novels. A great book for the beach or spa. I can't wait for the next book!

And this one is even better than the last (Barely Bewitched). The action is more... actiony and it is exactly the right time to get the details of the family prophecy that has been trying to separate Bryn and Tammy Jo since the beginning. And, bonus, we get more details of Bryn's past as well.

And again, my favorite part of these books is how well Frost depicts a strong Texas girl—well-mannered, unashamed of being a girl, but willing to stand up for herself and friends. Tammy Jo's character just resonates as someone I'd like spending time with. I particularly enjoyed a scene where she confronts a boy who has been sneaking pictures of her private (less-clothed) moments and sharing them with friends. She struck exactly the right tone, keeping it simple and straightforward.

“In this life, Craig, we’ve all got our choices to make. If you act like a man, I’ll treat you like one. If you act like a bad man, I’ll treat you like one. You get me?”

Well done.

I really enjoyed this one and I think for me it was because Zach wasn't in it. I'm not big on love triangles and I really like Bryn so it was nice to really see him spend time with Tammy Joe. It was a good mystery with all the humor I've come to expect from this series.

This may be my favorite book so far. With Zach gone trying to redeem himself in some way, we finally get real development in Tammy Jo and Bryn's relationship, even as she's trying to hold off on choosing between the 2 with Zach still gone. Bryn, who was already a vivid character, finally gets his full story told in a way, and helps us see more of him as a person in my opinion. I was glad to finally get real answers about the family warning against the Lyons family, and have a lot of questions answered in this story. Plus with seeing more of WAM we get a full view of that world, and why Bryn distrusts them, as well as seeing how vindictive some of the people in town can be. This develops the entire group of people showing them reacting to the past events, and trying to make sense of what's been happening, so they're not just clueless pedestrians in the background anymore.

First off, loved the darn ocelot! He may have stolen the show more than once. And I loved the interactions with Bryn. I ship them so hard.
