When his last op went wrong, marine sniper Matthew ‘Sandman’ Horn was doomed to the criminal justice system and saved his own life by accepting UI’s ‘offer’ to be imprisoned for the rest of his days or dead to all who knew him. Sandman chose the latter though it meant giving up his love, Renata Vaccaro. Listening to Messenger, head of UI, question their latest capture, Sandman learns Renata’s been kidnapped to be sold.

Given the order to kill Renata and her kidnapper, Sandman rushes to locate Renata so he can protect her though it’s against orders and could mean death for him. With Renata safely in his arms, Sandman ponders the Renata situation (kidnapping and kill orders) to clear this predicament. As Sandman and Renata dance around answers to each other’s questions, an armed UI operative sneaks into their hideout and shoots.

Matthew

I like the main storyline it's interesting and gripping with a little supernatural but in a scientist way. I think it could of been better (needs a Scooby gang and a base) this author is known for books to be more independent in a series (I have read guardian agency series I'm starting to wonder if the boss in that is John noble, it's a secret in that series) so
This book is about Matthew and his ex who was kidnapped in the last book.

Sandman was such a fun read. I got totally pulled into the story—Matthew is the kind of broody, badass hero you can’t help but root for, and Renata is strong and easy to like. Their past gives the whole thing an emotional edge, and the action moves quickly without feeling rushed. It had just the right mix of suspense and romance, and honestly, I didn’t want it to end. If you’re into second chances, spy vibes, and a little heat, definitely give this one a shot!

Good read

Renata had loved Matthew and when he was killed she had mourned him for a long time. When she was kidnapped she didn't know who had her or why. After she got the trunk opened and got out she ran for her life. That's when she heard a voice she had thought was long gone. Matthew had rescued her.

In the world of alphabet soup agencies there is one that goes deeper, darker and dirtier than the rest, known by its operatives as UI, the real name is Unknown Identities. UI is run by a shadow man known as The Messenger, his methods of recruitment as dark as he is. If UI wants you, no matter how good and honorable a person you are, The Messenger will find a way to set you up, dirty your name and give you no other options but to sell your soul to UI. Part of UI’s mission is to experiment on its operatives, giving them “enchancements” which will make them the perfect soldier.

One such operative is ex-Marine Matthew, code name Sandman for his ability to go long periods of time with no sleep, a crack sniper that knows how to get the job done. Now Sandman has been tasked with finding kidnap victim Renata Vaccaro and eliminating both her and her kidnapper. Not a tough gig for Sandman until he realizes that Renata is the woman he once loved. Now Sandman will have to figure out how to save Renata and make sure both of them come out alive.

Ms. Black once again takes us into the shadowy world of UI, using the dark and dangerous style we have come to expect with this series and giving us action, mystery and romance all wrapped up into a quick fun novella. As is usual for this series the characters are bigger than life yet flawed, we may get a glimpse into who they are but just to keep us on our toes, Ms. Black doesn’t reveal all. Sandman is all about honor and getting the job done, a sexy man with intelligence and wit. Renata is the perfect match for him, she is more than she seems and while we get a glimpse, I’m sure there is more to her than we know. We catch up with John Noble and his partner Amelia who with a little help from mysterious Ben work behind the scenes to help Sandman and Renata.

This is a young series and very different from Ms. Black’s other two series, it is darker, more gritty and dangerous. Sandman is a quick novella that feels almost like an interlude to cleanse one’s palate with, not as intense as the previous offerings but just as much fun to read. I can’t wait to see what comes next in this series, I can’t begin to guess where we will be taken but I know it’s going to be a good ride.

Sandman is the third installment of Regan Black’s Unknown Identities series. This installment brings us the story of Renata Vaccaro and Matthew Horn. Renata’s story begins in the previous novella, Double Vision, as she is the kidnap victim that starts the events of that story rolling. Matthew is the UI asset assigned to recover her and eliminate her. Unfortunately for Messenger, Matthew and Renata have a history and he’s begun to question the validity of all his orders.

This is another strong installment in the series. Black brings us more clues regarding the UI program, but also manages to craft a workable HEA for these two characters along the way. She is deftly building to a showdown and I can’t wait to see what she has planned.

This was my favorite of the series! I love both Matthew and Renata, and I liked learning their history. It was a quick story (probably more of a novella length) but I really enjoyed it!
