I didn’t dislike her, but I disliked the speed in which her recovery is written. I understand that it’s different for everyone, but this felt unrealistic. Additionally, home girl had a few too many tstl moments.
Good person and caring/protective partner. I liked how his relationship with Willow was thoroughly developed/explored on page.
Treated Willow like shit half the time, but one scene in particular really takes the cake. For context this is immediately after she receives a threat from her rapist/stalker:
"There was a knife through a photo of Easton kissing me," I explain, my voice steadier. "And he wrote 'Mine' on my door."
Wyatt's eyes narrow at my words and I can see anger enter them. "How did he even find you here?" he asks, his voice low.
Frustration bubbles up within me, and I can't contain it any longer. "How the fuck should I know?"
[…]
With a growl, Wyatt starts to pace the room, his frustration palpable. He stops and turns to me, his expression intense. "How the hell did this happen? Easton told us the feds were making it look like you went with them!"
His revelation is news to me, but instead of soothing my anger, it adds fuel to the fire. I retort, "You think I chose for this to happen? Do you think I want to be scared for my life? For the lives of the people I care most about?"
[…]
Wyatt's frustration reaches a breaking point, and he takes a step closer to me, his hands flexing at his sides. "I do love you, Willow, but right now I hate you for bringing this into our lives."
His words hit me like a slap, and the room seems to spin. I can't believe he just said that. Anguish and hurt well up inside me, and without thinking, I scream at him, "I didn't ask for any of this! I didn't ask to be abducted by them or for that sadistic asshole to assault me for six fucking years!"
Wyatt's expression hardens, and he retaliates, "You chose to come back home, knowing he might follow. You brought this threat into my son's life! You being here is a threat to him!"
That’s right. He victim blames Willow, telling her she put his son in danger, and tells her—the woman he supposedly loves—that he hates her. I guess it’s okay though because they make up within the next page,
"I came back for you, you fucking asshole! But if you want me gone, then I'm fucking gone."
In a surge of frustration and determination, I storm over to the bedroom door, fully intending to leave and walk myself off his property. However, I'm shocked when Wyatt's hands spin me around, and he shoves me back against the door. He gets in my face, growling, "I'm allowed to hate you and still never want you to leave me again." Before I can respond, his lips crash into mine.
You read that right, he manhandles Willow despite knowing her trauma, and without knowing if she is in a place mentally where this wouldn’t trigger her. Fortunately for him, body betrayal syndrome kicks in for Willow and all is forgiven. He was a good father though.
I figured I’d group them together because they’re barely indistinguishable except for the part where the former is an alcoholic and the latter a virgin. They were similar to Easton in that they treated Willow well and cared for her, but I rocked some points because they seemed like an afterthought.
I mean they added drama, but they were obvious. Additionally they were petty and there wasn’t enough time dedicated to flushing their characters out, resulting in them seeming like caricatures. Don’t get me started on the fact that the resolution/comeuppance surrounding them were underwhelming. I wanted the tea, and to know in detail how their lives were destroyed.
I felt like having Willow be abducted at twelve was a weird call, since the author established the storyline that all of the guys had started to have strong romantic/sexual feelings for Willow at the time of her disappearance. I feel like if she had been a bit older 15-17 at the time of her abduction, this would make more sense. Lessening Willow’s time with the cult from fifteen to ten years wouldn’t have changed anything in that part of the story by much.
Are we in the clear yet?, are we in the clear yet?, are we in the clear yet?, in the clear yet, good🎶
"Easton, get her off my property," Wyatt orders, his voice low and edged with anger.
Easton, caught off guard, stammers, "Wyatt, you need to listen. You don’t know—"
"You're strong, Willow," he says, his voice filled with sincerity. "Stronger than you give yourself credit for. And I'm here for you, every step of the way."
Mason breaks the silence, his voice low and steady, "He was a dead man the moment he laid a finger on you."
"Willow, I... I'm so sorry. I didn't know. We all looked for you for years but as each year passed we just lost hope. The one person who hadn't given up was the only one of us who hadn't even known you when you disappeared."
