This series follows the strange relationship between two girls, one monstrous and one umm … depressed, and one wants to eat the other but maybe they're just gay, who knows. It was recommended to me because it has similar vibes to my beloved The Summer Hikaru Died and truer words have never been spoken (thank you, @LittleMockingbird). From the relationship to the horror elements to the summertime small town vibes, all very much to my liking!

doomed yuri but make it a depressed mc and her protective monstrous mermaid who just wants to keep the other one alive, whether it's from other monsters or her own self. shiori's biggest desire is to wait to devour hinako only when she's finally happy, and hinako (who is eager to die by her hands) will take this as a chance to get out her comfort zone. yeah, it's dark...but it also has its sweet moments.

anyways def read if you want "the summer hikaru died" vibes! save me queer small-town monster horror subgenre, save me

overall, i enjoyed this way more than i was expecting and loved the ominous atmosphere. excited to see more of this duo!

Hinako spends her days hoping for an end to her misery, which appears to be at hand when she crosses paths with the mysterious Shiori. As a mermaid, Shiori finds Hinako delectable and is prepared to give new meaning to the phrase ‘dying of consumption’ after she makes sure Hinako’s as, uh, tasty as possible. Why go on an aquarium date when you can just date the aquarium?

Finally, a yuri title with a little bit more to chew on! Okay, I swear I’ve exhausted my appetite for food puns for the rest of the review. Lame gags aside, this is a really welcome change of pace from what we typically see in the genre.

This is a full-stop horror title; Hinako’s backstory is tragic and awful and the drowning metaphor might be ladled on real thick but the art sells it with some stunning visuals (it’s all very Neo Nakatani-esque as well, so automatic approval here). And I never notice this sort of thing, but Hinako’s uniform is a fantastic design.

And her delicious skin makes Hinako incredibly attractive, in a gourmet sense, to every hideous creature lurking out there. There’s a bunch of gore at a couple points and some real nasty moments - the first monster attack is wonderfully creepy. Whatever this lacks in depth it makes up for with pure atmosphere.

Outside of Shiori’s stated desire to devour Hinako, we don’t get a lot of progress in terms of a relationship. Shiori is pushy and Hinako is still enveloped in the trauma of her past, so they don’t move the needle too much. I did like how the story portrays Hinako’s PTSD; she is not well and is only making the minimum effort to exist.

How this ends up? Well, that’s good question. I can see it going for a happy end or a bad one, depending on the mood. Hinako needs to “ripen”, but we noticeably get no indication of when that might actually occur. I’d love for them to have a long and happy life that ends with consensual bloodshed.

There’s also a heck of a lot of mood and not a ton of plotting. Hinako’s best friend is either nursing a massive crush on her, jealous that her friend is hanging out with somebody else, or secretly a monster playing the long game. She provides a little comedic relief in a story that admittedly needs some.

Basically, this is laying out some groundwork and teasing some mysteries and spookiness to come and it pulls it off by virtue of its uniqueness and the moody vibe, which is such a welcome change of pace for yuri. This sort of reminds me of a gay version of Mieruko-chan and that’s absolutely fine by me.

Finally, this title is especially sharp because it can easily refer to both Shiori herself, or the intense hopelessness that Hinako is enveloped by. Maybe it’s not intentional, but it’s a heck of a thing if it isn’t. I’d like to see more layers to this, but it suggests that it may certainly have them to show.

4 stars - worth 4 stars just for being something truly novel, but it’s also a strong start that promises all sorts of things that I dearly hope it can deliver on.

This girl wants to die. This monster saves her, but only so she can get to know her, and make sure she's at her happiest, before eating her as well. It's a dark twisted tale, with suicide at the forefront, and dealing with major pdst. Dark, slowburn, solid opening. Waiting to see if it picks up though.

I've had this on my shelf for a couple of months, but never got around to it until now, but it was a really good read. I'm definitely interested in reading the rest of the series because of how unique the story is, at least in terms of a saphic manga, but I may read the rest online instead of waiting for a time when I can buy the rest of the series physically.

I really enjoy both of the main characters and the side character who is friends with the main girl. I love that the main girl with shorter hair doesn't have the typical personality that you'd see in yuri manga, and obviously is struggling with a big event that occurred in her life, instead of just skipping over a background that would obviously heavily affect a character. For a first volume of a manga series, this read was really good, obviously a little slow as things get set up, but it still completely has my interest, and I hope to get to reading the series again soon!

This was an incredibly strange (in the best way) read.

It focusses on mental health and a mermaid/monster who wishes to feast on a girl struggling with depression. If it sounds odd, it is, but it’s also strangely heartwarming & cathartic.

I didn’t expect to enjoy this as much as I did, and I also thought it would be far darker but it’s almost… sweet? So I would be interested to read the other volumes. Enjoying it greatly so far.

Rep// hinted at sapphic. Not sure if it’ll develop into more later on.

TWs listed below, I would suggest checking them out as there are heavy themes in this.

TW// suicidal ideation and themes of suicide, gore, death, hints around self harm, depression, possible PTSD/trauma around past events, heavy themes of mental health, near drowning.

Hinako wants to die.
Shiori wants to eat her.

But not yet - she isn’t “ripe” yet. So Hinako decides to wait to die until Shiori deems it time to kill her. In the meantime, Shiori will protect her from all of the other monsters that want to eat her while also trying to cultivate her into the most delicious meat possible.

Yuri mermaid horror has my name written all over it, and I’m really glad I picked this up. It’s got such a unique and immediately gripping premise, along with some beautiful art. I’d love more aquatic scenes and I also hope it pushes its horror elements further as it goes along. I’m not much of a manga reader so I don’t know if I’ll keep up with this as it releases, but I really enjoyed it.

Obviously many major content warnings including suicidal ideation, grief/loss of a parent and sibling, and gore.

yuri manga about a sea monster fascinated by a human girl to the point that she want to eat her is exactly my cup of tea! And beautifully drawn too. The plot follows two girl during summer in small town/ maybe it's village. two girl: Shiroi and Hinako. Shiori is mermaid and as I mentioned she wants to eat other, and Hinako is human girl struggles with depression. I haven't read the other volumes yet, but this story seems promising
If someone looking for sapphic romantic tension with horror elements, something similar to The Summer Hikaru Died, just read this.

Not to be confused with the recent one I reviewed: The Girl from the Sea, this is not your wholesome mermaid love story. Instead this is a melancholy tale with edges of horror creeping in from every side. Because, you see, in Japan the myths around mermaids are a bit different. They aren’t stunningly beautiful princesses swimming away from fishermen’s nets and appearing on Disney screens. Instead these are monstrous creatures with claws and fangs that often eat human flesh...

An astonishingly brilliant meditation on the unbearable pain of losing loved ones. This is a measured, incredibly dark slow burn, but it took my breath away and I could not put it down. There are scary, menacing monsters here, with hungry teeth and razor-sharp claws, but the real horror here comes from the feeling of just trying to live through each day with the weight of unrelenting grief, which is captured just perfectly here. A difficult read sometimes (though I’m guessing future volumes will gradually become less dark), but entirely rewarding.

Oh it’s so sad! She basically gave up her life to this sea monster because she’s ready to give up on life. Not very mindful. Not very cutesy. Not very demure. 😭😭😭 Chefk your triggers girly pop! Love the horror mermaids though.

Seguiremos informando 💪.

this is a really cool carmilla style story, and I didn't think I'd enjoy it as much as I did. the art in gorgeous and the plot is fascinating. it toys with the same hunger vs lust as carmilla, but it's toned down due to trauma. this is pretty great and toes the line between slice of life romance and monster story.

A scary but also depressing manga about a girl and the monster who wants to eat her yummy flesh.

I already had this one on my radar for a while, but when I heard that there was going to be an anime adaptation in 2025 I moved this one up my list. And so I ended up reading this strange/depressing read in Spooktober. I am happy I did though, because despite it being depressing, it was also a good read. And while I am still a bit out of anime (after years of watching tons these days I am mostly going for manga/manwha) I hope that by the time this anime airs I am back into it again.

In this one we meet a girl named Hinako. She used to be very happy. Very bright. But these days the light has gone out in her. Her family died in an accident (and we slowly learn more and more about the accident as the story continues) and she is just done with it all. She goes through the motions of daily life, if she can get herself to do it, but she also stares forlornly into the sea, hoping the water takes her. During one of those moments she is saved by a girl who wears the same uniform as her, but she has never seen her before. The girl tells her that she wants to eat Hinako, that she is a mermaid. I am definitely happy that Shiori doesn’t look scary. Well, until later, haha. It just makes the gap much more fun. From cute to murderous.

We see that Shiori isn’t the only one hungry for Hinako’s meat, and we see that Hinako doesn’t even cares if she is eaten or not which just broke my heart. But Shiori is definitely not having it. Hinako is her meal, and that is final. And we see that Shiori is more than eager to protect her meal, often leading to much blood everywhere. We learn that Shiori first wants to fatten Hinako up. Mostly with happy feelings and fun experiences, but I wish her luck with that given that Hinako has just given up on things and things are often just too much for her or remind her too much of her family.

Then there is the best friend Miko, who is full of energy and tries to help out Hinako. I really liked Miko. Sometimes over-energized characters can be a bit much, but Miko was just too cute.

I wasn’t too happy at one point in the story. Hinako doesn’t want to go to the festival when Miko gently asks if she wants to try it this year, but when Shiori gets to her home she says yes. I would have been much happier if Shiori and Hinako had gone to Miko’s home to bring her along. Now I was just, wtf Hinako. You dump your bestie who has been there for you all this time for a new girl who wants to eat you? I know you are desperate, but think of the pain you are causing to your bestie here.

I am curious to see how things will go next and how long Shiori will take before eating Hinako, or if maybe she just doesn’t do it in the end. But for now I will just wait for the series to be finished/wait for the anime and see how that goes. I would recommend this one, but again, be warned it is quite depressing at times.
