Take Your Breath Away by Linwood Barclay
Synopsis /
From the New York Times bestselling author of Find You First and Elevator Pitch comes a gripping psychological thriller about a formerly missing woman who has suddenly returned under mysterious circumstances.
One weekend, while Andrew Mason was on a fishing trip, his wife, Brie, vanished without a trace. Most everyone assumed Andy had got away with murder--it's always the husband, isn't it?--but the police could never build a strong case against him. For a while, Andy hit rock bottom--he drank too much to numb the pain, was abandoned by all his friends save one, nearly lost his business, and became a pariah in the place he once called home.
Now, six years later, Andy has finally put his life back together. He sold the house he once shared with Brie and moved away. Truth to tell, he wasn't sad to hear that the old place was razed and a new house built on the site. He's settled down with a new partner, Jayne, and life is good.
But Andy's peaceful world is about to shatter. One day, a woman shows up at his old address, screaming, "Where's my house? What's happened to my house?" And then, just as suddenly as she appeared, the woman--who bears a striking resemblance to Brie--is gone. The police are notified and old questions--and dark suspicions--resurface.
Could Brie really be alive after all these years? If so, where has she been? It soon becomes clear that Andy's future, and the lives of those closest to him, depends on discovering what the hell is going on. The trick will be whether he can stay alive long enough to unearth the answers.
My Thoughts /
Linwood Barclay, is an international bestselling author with twenty novels to his credit. He spent three decades in newspapers before turning his hand to writing thrillers full-time. His 2011 novel, The Accident, has been turned into a six-part television series aired in France. Several of his other books have been, or ‘are’, in development for film and television projects. So why then, have I only managed to read just one other book written by this author - Find You First, which was back in October of 2021?
Take Your Breath Away, published in 2022, is a standalone novel set in Milford, a coastal city in New Haven County, Connecticut USA, and tells the story of Brie and Andrew Mason. The story opens with Brie, the night before she goes missing. This opening little tidbit gives us an insight into Brie and her character. We learn she’s got secrets. Nothing too sinister mind you, but secrets, nonetheless. This opening scene sets up motive for a few different people – as we find out later.
Like a lot of married couples, Brie and Andy have had marriage problems of late. Fault can be laid with both sides, but they’ve worked through their issues and now things are looking up. They’ve agreed that their current renovation and flip project in Mulberry Street will be their last, as it’s time to find their forever home and plan for their future.
Whilst Andy is on a weekend fishing trip with his best friend Greg, Brie disappears. The police, and most of Andy’s friends and family think he’s the prime suspect. But there’s no evidence to support this theory, there’s no body and, unfortunately, no leads.
The book then skips ahead six years. Although never ‘formally’ charged with anything, Andrew remains the police’s main suspect for Brie’s disappearance. But Andrew has had to move on with his life. He has changed his last name, moved to another town, and is now in a relationship with another woman. But not only ‘in a relationship’ – we learn that Jayne is now pregnant with Andrew’s child. Andrew has dug a big hole for himself here because we learn that he has revealed nothing to Jayne about his previous life with Brie. So, when a woman who bears a striking resemblance to his missing wife turns up at their old Mulberry Street house screaming, ‘Where’s my house? What’s happened to my house?'; well, Andrew me old mate; you’ve got a lot of explaining to do. The police are alerted and, the investigation into Brie’s sudden ‘re-appearance’ begins again in earnest.
The was a quick and easy read, with interesting dialogue and strong inviting characters. The uncertainty surrounding the question as to whether Brie is alive or not is what drives this story, and especially, when the recent sighting of a woman who looks remarkably like Brie is dropped in. The reader is kept guessing until close to the end. This is a definite page-turner and a nicely played game of cat and mouse. It’s a book full of twists, turns and misdirection, with a heaping helping of red herrings thrown in.
Trust no-one. Suspect everyone.
