When their eyes meet, their hearts stop and beat as one. I’ve always been told I was the anomaly, the fluke, the only black bear they’d ever seen. Somehow, I know that’s not true. The wolves have told me the Alpha over all the bears is headed this way. But they’ve sent me away so he won’t see me. I’m a burden, a hindrance to the grizzlies, yet they keep a shock collar around my neck so I can’t escape. On the wolf pack lands, I see someone approaching. A male—and he smells like home. Has someone come to save me?Burden is book one of the Bayou Bear Shifter Novels and is 66,000 words of non-stop action and romance. This paranormal romance is suited for teens, young adults, and adults alike. Supernatural bear shifters in the bayou of Louisiana are led by a sexy Alpha as he’s on the lookout for his true, fated mate. Readers and lovers of Twilight and the Vampire Academy will devour these novels.
Lila Felix is full of antics and stories. She refused to go to Kindergarten after the teacher made her take a nap on the first day of school. She staged her first protest in middle school. She almost flunked out of her first semester at Pepperdine University because she was enthralled with their library and frequently was locked in. Now her husband and three children have to put up with her rebel nature in Louisiana where her days are filled with cypress trees, crawfish, and of course her books and writing. She writes about the ordinary people who fall extraordinarily in wild, true love.
2.5 stars for this indie shapeshifter romance. For a bit of a change of pace, our focus here is on bear shapeshifters. Hawke is the young black bear Alpha over all of the bear shapeshifters, burdened by the mess his clan is in, because his dead father, the Alpha before him, really fouled things up. Also Hawke is badly in need of a mate. Awww! Luckily, he hears about Echo (EchoHawk! haha .... sorry, that was the name of one of my law professors ...), a young black bear shapeshifter who was taken as a baby and is being held captive by a nasty clan of grizzly bear shapeshifters. We know they are nasty because they treat Echo like a slave, with a shock collar around her neck to prevent her escape, and because they have loud rough sex where Echo can hear them and get traumatized, or something like that.
Anyway, since black bear shapeshifters are better and cooler than grizzly bear ones (I was having some trouble wrapping my head around that, but whatever), Hawke is the Alpha of them as well. He and his Betas end up sneakily rescuing Echo from the grizzlies, who had their reasons for wanting to hang onto Echo -- and it's not just that she was a great slave housekeeper/cook/bookkeeper. Hawke knows that Echo is his fated mate, and they do this imprinting thing. But their bond can still be broken, and not only do the grizzlies want Echo back, but her long-lost mother does as well.
Echo doesn't want to be a burden, or just a cog in the wheel, so she's searching to find her calling in life, as well as figuring out her new relationship with Hawke and his black bear clan. I'm not sure why she feels like she's so much of a burden when she's clearly helping them to fix up the disorganized mess their clan is, and Hawke already adores her, but maybe it's that she was so beaten down by the grizzlies that she has a hard time realizing her value.
Burden isn't too bad for an indie book, but the writing is a little amateurish (understandably, for a self-published book) and there are some mistakes that a solid editing job might have fixed. The plot was actually fairly interesting, it just lacked somewhat in the execution. I did really like the computer hacker bear shapeshifter character, whose romance I believe is the focus of the next book in this series.
“Then her eyes, the color of a turquoise stone, connected with mine and my world shattered.”
“Don’t be afraid. I feel your fear, mate. Our clan is loving, and we don’t keep slaves. You will be completely safe and unharmed. I hope one day you find yourself happy even.”
“I wouldn’t know happy if it slapped me in the ass.”
“Burden” was a fast paced intro to this new series. Apart from Hawke and Echo's love story, we've got to meet a lot of other characters who I'm certain will make comebacks in the form of their own stories somewhere in the future. But back to Hawke and Echo's story, theirs was a sweet one that was all about love and trust. Echo was a black bear kept as slave ,alongside other women, of a grizzly clan. But she was saved by Hawke and his betas. Hawke was lucky and beyond thrilled that he had found his mate, but he was struggling with his conscience. Yes he had saved Echo, but at the same time he also felt he himself kept her captive.
“Your clan just gave me two things I’ve never had.”
“What?”
“Gifts and acceptance. It’s a lot to process.”
Which you can see was ridiculous because he and his clan made her feel special and loved. But poor Hawke couldn't let himself believe that.
Hawke was a really great....bear, who unlike his father cared dearly for the clan members and their ordeals. And he treated his mate with respect, Hawke wouldn't dream of treating his mate like his father had treated his mother. After he found out that his grandfather “stole” another's mate, I started to wonder that maybe Hawke's father had done the same….would certainly explain his behavior.
Echo despite her enslavement, had somehow taught herself a lot of skills. She turned all of their lives around with those skills and helped uncover that someone was stealing the clan's money. The girl was a born leader.
As I said before this was a sweet read, fast paced but no “dirty” business going on, apart from the grizzlies. “Burden” is only the first book in the series. I hope in the next books in this series to read more about what will happen to the grizzly clan that had kept Echo slaved. And what about the other women still trapped there, will they be freed, do they even want to be freed. And what about the clan that stole their money what repercussions will they face. I'm really curious. Apart from that I also want to read Rev and Martha's story, prim & proper meets rugged loner.
I like Rev, he seemed funny, smart and he knew how to treat and respect a lady. And Martha's was such a sweet person as well as a great friend to Echo. Great duo to look forward to, there will be sniffing, maybe blood. But mostly sniffing.
“He’s hot.”
I barreled over laughing. Martha seemed like this prim and proper Suzie homemaker type and there she was talking about Rev, who looked as rugged as they come, being hot.
“It’s not funny. I think he’s a lot older though. But he smells divine.”
“Gross. He’s over at the house. Do you want to come over and see if he wants to sniff you too?”
This was more than the mate-claim. It was more than love. More than a fluttering of our hearts, or a tingle when she entered a room. My mate owned me. And I was happy to be her property. By the time I’d hummed the song twice over, she was fast asleep. And in case we did have the Creator’s ear that night, I sent him a simple plea. Long gone were my whines for myself and my failures in running the clan, formed just for me, I whispered, “All I want is for my mate and my clan to be happy.” ***
Ever since Lila confided she was planning to write a shifter book, I found myself wondering how it would be. Lila has never before written a para/supernatural book before. Would it be as great as her other works? Should she just stick with what she knows? Oh boy, the anticipation was numbing.
Fast forward to when Lila handed over several pages she had done. Wow! Seriously, is this the same woman who wrote the LOVE AND SKATE series and several other magnificent books? Because the pages she sent was not enough. I was already held captive by what she had written. And now I have to go without while she finishes? Fudge knuckers. I need more. So ever since I finished those precious few pages...I knew right then and there that this would be my most sought after read for next year. Thankfully I didn't have to wait until 2014 like you readers do.
Fast forward again to the night when in my inbox holds the finished product. I quickly devoured this book and I could only come to one conclusion. Ok, two conclusions. One, this is my most favorite book by Lila to date. Yes, I said it. My most favorite. Hard to believe with all the great ones she has out. But it is true. I inhaled this story and fell in love with the characters. And two, it has rekindled my love for para/supernatural reads. Especially ones of shifters.
BURDEN is such an amazing story. I am so hung up on the characters and the storyline. Not many shifter books out there are based on bears alone. That is one aspect that sets this book apart from the rest. Another is the background of Echo. I won't divulge too much, letting you read it for yourself. But it was definitely interesting and caught my attention. But the moment of the book that gutted me? Oh that would be when Hawke had to pull rank and go against everything he has ever known, against the beast inside of him. It tore me up. I hated him and hurt for him all at once.
I only had one problem with the book. But Lila quickly squelched my fears. So technically it isn't even a problem any longer. I had a feeling this would be a standalone. I mean why she would write something so amazing, so fabulous and only write one book? But like I said, she relived my fears and YES! It will be a series.
Now I am eagerly waiting (which isn't my specialty) for the next book in the series and BURDEN isn't even out yet. I wonder how I can spur Felix into action to get that book done?
This was an absolutely beautiful paranormal love story! It has all the action of a good shifter book, with the deep affection that only a mate bond can provide. Echo is just amazing! She had such a horrible time growing up, thinking she was alone and being used and abused. Now that she is given a chance, she proves to be smart, loving, and loyal to the core. Then there’s Hawk, this gorgeous Alpha who struggles to rule his people. He couldn’t even imagine how much one female could make until he found Echo. I was drawn into this story immediately and loved every second of it!
I received Burden in return for an honest review. Echo has always been a burden on the Grizzly bear clan after being found in the woods as a baby they raised her. She’s spent her whole life trying to prove that she has worth working to earn a spot in the clan. Instead she’s been worked to the bone and treated like a slave but things are about to change. Receiving a call that the Grizzly bears have one of his own Hawke has to check it out and if need be save the female black bear. He never expected that by meeting her he would find his mate, and with the help of the wolves he frees her from the life she’s always known and brings her back to his clan.
Since Echo didn’t grow up in a healthy pack she has some issues but the more time they spend together they start to heal her as well as heal Hawke. Now that Hawke has found a true mate he learns that his clan has issues but with her by his side they will be able to help fix what his father broke. Echo isn’t like typical bears she has the ability to heal which is the reason she was taken from her family and now that her mother has learned about her she is determined to teach Echo how to heal even if it means driving a wedge between the pair.
I like Echo a lot even though she’s had to overcome a lot she’s come out a stronger person for it. Dealing with the Grizzly bears has only made her strong and now that she’s mate bound to Hawke he will be able to give her what she’s missing together they will be able to be a strong powerful alpha pair. I think Hawke is perfect for Echo even putting her own needs above his own and treating her like an equal. They have this sweetest romance between the two it just works even though I’m not a huge fan of insta love.
When I had the chance to review Burden I jumped at the chance since I’ve not read as many bear shifter romance novels I would like to admit. Burden had everything I crave in a HAE young adult paranormal romance it’s perfectly crafted to keep the reader wanting more. I love the concept that when they make eye contact they just know they are meant to be together. Burden is a fast paced hard to put down novel filled with sweet romance, danger, magic, shifters, and just enough mystery to keep you guessing. I love the author’s writing style she’s created a beautiful story that flows along perfectly. I was truly captivated from start to finish. This is my first novel by the author but I can already tell you it won’t be my last. Can’t wait to read more from the Bayou Bear Chronicles.
Lila always writes such Swoon-Tastic men who make your heart pitter patter and turn your insides into a Gooey mess. Hawke is just another one of those guys to add to the list.

I have read many paranormal romance books over the years, and I must say that "Burden" was among some of my favorites. It was exceptional, captivating, and very entertaining. I loved the characters, especially Hawke and Echo, and the storyline was superb. I mean, how can you go wrong when the characters have such cool names? That's right, you can't. I loved how unique and intriguing the story was - it certainly kept my interest throughout. I even read it in one day, if that's any indication of how amazing of a read it was. I have never come across bear shifters before, but I must say that I loved it, and I can't wait to read Martha and Rev's story in "Hearten"!
Burden by Lila Felix is such a wonderful story that I have read. This is book number one in this wonderful start to a brand new series writen by a brand new author for me to read. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about bear shifters and paranormal romance.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Lila Felix had me ready to read just with the fact that it's one of her books, add in the fact that this is her first paranormal romance and I was freaking out. I swear the moment it hit my email, I was bouncing around and squeeing - loudly. One of those rare authors that I trust implicitly with a story, Burden didn't disappoint and I was left with a smile on my face and ready for the next book in the series.
When Hawke, a Black bear and Alpha of the Bear Shifters, receives information that a Black bear shifter female is being held by a pack of Grizzly bear shifters, he immediately heads over to check things out. What he finds is Echo, the female shifter, who is being treated badly. She's also a healer, which way cool :) From the moment he gets there he feels that she is his mate and the moment they lay eyes on each other, it becomes real. Mates, destined to be together and all that awesome jazz. Excuse me while I sigh and grin like a maniac. I loved this book, seriously loved it. Boy bear meets girl bear, they're soul mates, yay!! There is a lot of awesome stuff that happens, but I don't want to give the plot away.
I will talk about Hawke and Echo though...
Hawke is the bees knees, seriously, hands down, one of my favorites. Move over paranormal book boys, Hawke is going on my ever-growing, never-ending book boyfriend list. I love Hawke. He's all alpha-y and yummy, and hugely muscled, which yum. He's also kind, gentle, and strong. That's another thing I love about Lila Felix books, she writes really good men.
Now, I get to Echo. Which just going to take a moment to express some giddiness - she has my name!! She has my name!! I've never run across a book character with my name, heck I don't even meet people in real life with my name! Eeek!! Love it!! Okay, done with my giddiness….
Echo is awesome, truly and completely awesome. This girl has known some horrible pain and abuse and yet she hasn't lost her goodness. She's kind, strong, a completely perfect female alpha. I was rooting for her from the moment she hit the pages and I loved that she was a healer. Her family origins and what we find out about her is really cool.
And here is where I gush about the relationship, but not too much…
I loved them together, really, really loved. The mythology that Lila Felix has created is very cool, how the bears mate, how they figure out who their soul mate is, all of it was really awesome. There is such a sweetness to the relationship between Hawke and Echo, and while the steam factor is very low, it's still really awesome.
Okay now that I've gushed all over the place, I leave you with this - go 1-click Burden NOW!! It's really good, one of her best yet, but then I think that every time she puts a book out :) Go read it, you'll love it, it's YA, it's Paranormal Romance, it's sweet, it's lovely, it's awesome.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

First thoughts: So here is why i am torn...This was was amazingly written, like the writing style, the voice, wonderful. I could fall in love with it because of that alone. I am a seasoned paranormal reader, but I never have read a strictly werebear (bear-shifter) never made that clear to be honest. Some authors a very particular about that. Anyways that doesn't really matter. I was thrilled that I could finally read a full were-bear story, because most novels that are were-bears or bear shifters well they are eroticas, and I have said this a million times before, nothing wrong with sex, but i want some plot with my books. Anyways so i was thrilled to find this. And here is why i am torn...there wasn't as much action as I am accustom to in paranormal reads.
Thoughts on Plot: So this starts out and I really liked how it started out because it starts out fast, we are thrown into action almost immediately, that's sort of where it sort of ....pitters off I suppose. There is a lot of relationship development here, there is a lot of development for the clan who had a lot of problems before. Mysteries are uncovered, and sacrifices are made. I enjoyed seeing the relationship between Echo and Hawke but I also was slightly unconvinced with the speed at which Echo accepted everything. but that is for later in characters. First back to plot! So I appreciated though that Lila took the time to develop their relationship and while they were fated mates they weren't automatically supposed to fall in love. They have a few bumps in the road but it was interesting to see how they worked together. The ending picked up the action-y parts not as much as i thought, but there was some. I think that it wrapped things up pretty well.
Characters:
Echo: (love her name by the way) anyways she was born into well what could techincally slavery for the Grizzly weres, while she is a black bear. Practically raised to believe there were no other kind of werebears out there, and she handles herself well outside of her slavery. I think that she was incredibly sassy and brave. I guess I wanted to believe it but i think her bravery happened a little quicker than what one would expect. Anyways I do like the person she becomes though. I like that she always has that insecurity until she really grows into herself.
Hawke: He is sexy. He was alpha male that is for sure without being too over-bearings (PUNNNNNNN) sorry.... anyways he was a really a good guy. I think he was trying to be the best Alpha and mate that he could be. I think that he was well written and I really did like him.
The endings: Good like i said things felt very wrapped up. I already started the next book and I am very interested in the next couple's story.
Ok first I need to tell Lila how very proud I am of her for venturing outside of her comfort zone and writing a shifter book. I know she was very nervous but Lila my girl, this book is not only a beautiful love story, its a work of art. As always, Lila has managed to bring us into these amazing realistic characters lives and hold us there until the very end. I laughed, cried ( note to self, never read a Lila Felix book in a crowed doctor's office) and felt elated right along with Hawke * sigh* and Echo? I bet you're thinking, who are these shifters and what's their story?
Hawke Turnclaw is the Alpha of his Grizzly clan. He's a compassionate, fearless and passionate leader. Hawke is determined to lead his pack out of troubles plaguing them due to his father's, the prevous Alpha greedy choices. As much as he adores his pack, there is a piece of his heart missing he needs a mate. Hawke must go one a rescue mission to save a mistreated bear. His world comes to a crashing halt when he finds his mate.
Echo is used to being mistreated by her clan, skipping meals and sleeping on the cold hard ground is part of her daily routin. They can't break Echo's sprit even when her Alpha places as shock collar around her neck to prevent her from trying to escape, again. Her life is about to change drastically when a sexy male shows up calling her mate.
Now Echo finds herself trying to adjust to a life she never dreamed possible. Showered with love, respect and friendship she begins to grow and trust her feelings for Hawke.
There was just so much I loved about this book I just don't know where to start.......hmmmm how about the phenomenal characters??? Hawke could be bitter about the mess his father left in his wake of selfishness but instead he looks for solutions and strives to be a better Alpha than his father. You'll want to add him to your collection of Lila book boys! He's sexy, protective and has the Alpha male thing going for him *sigh*
Let's not forget Echo, she was mistreated her whole life and told how worthless she was. Yet, she never gave up hope that one day her life would be better than the hell she was forced to live. When Hawke came for her, there was instant attraction and a connection between them. But I like the fact that Lila made their love bloom slowly built over time with trust and friendship as a guide. BUT there were plenty of passion between these two that will make you smolder right along with them!
"Burden" is one of those stories that proves how powerful and healing love can be. This story will stay in your heart and make you ache to visit it again.
This book had many elements to it that were very similar to some of my favorite werewolf books (ironic, since this book is about bears):
"Alpha & Omega" by Patricia Briggs: A damaged pack holds heroine captive for the main purpose of having access to her "healing" abilities. Also, heroine does not feel the need to obey their forced Alpha, yet does so anyway, because...reasons.
"Grey Wolves" by Quinn Loftis: Hero under threat of having to fight for the right to bond with his mate, due to a challenge from a male from another "pack"; hero feels pressure/temptation to hasten bonding rituals in order to keep her. Also, the bond between mates is threatened by an estranged parent laying claim to the daughter they never knew. Both events taking place IN THIS SAME EXACT ORDER.
"Matefinder" by Leia Stone: Mates sharing a set of marking that match, signifying their status as "true mates."
If you look past the many...MANY formatting errors (which may have been due to this being a Review Copy on a document sheet), as well as grammatical ones, and the fact that there was no way of diversifying chapters (or sometimes even character POV), then this could be a very worthwhile read for you.
It did have some more unique qualities to it, like that of the Black Bear's creation story, and their being the head species of the shifter clans. These were some elements that kept me interested throughout this book.
I'm not sure that this is something that I would have picked out for myself, and the formatting drove me nearly insane. I much preferred Felix's "Lucent" books. But it's not an altogether lackluster read. It just wasn't really my cup of tea.
Meh. He saves her in the first few chapters. They imprint, or whatever right away. No conflict. Then they spend the next 85% of the book playing house. Then a conflict arises that has been building for while, and I start to get excited and think the story may go somewhere after all. But no, the huge issues is resolved in one chapter and once again they are back to playing house. Seriously. Nothing happens. We'll, stuff happens, but nothing interesting. No conflict. No drama. No action. But they totally cook for each other and have a house party. *eye roll*
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Burden is a paranormal romance story focusing on a clan of bear shifters. For the uninitiated, a shifter, or were, is an animal that changes form or “shifts” into a human, or a human who shifts into an animal depending on the mythology of the story. Werewolves typically being the most common example of these in books and movies. So yes, this makes our main characters werebears. I've read a lot of shifter books over the years and I can’t recall one that has more than a passing mention of bear shifters. And before anyone geeks out on me. No, The Belgariad doesn't count IMHO!
There’s really not a lot that I can tell you without spoiling things that you probably haven’t already read in the synopsis. Aside from the uplifting and heart breaking relationship between Hawke and Echo, one of the things I loved most about this book is the strong feeling of community among the clan. It was a nice step out from just the immediate circle of the main characters.
This was another one of her books that I could have sworn I’m only half way through when I came to realize I was at the end! But fortunately this is just the beginning of what is sure to be a great series.
Lila Felix has moved into a genre uncharted for her. She finally stepped out into the paranormal realm. I must say her first attempt at writing a paranormal romance reads as if she has written them many times.
What I like: Although this is different for Lila, it still has that "Lila feel" to it. There is something so comforting about the way she develops her characters, and I like knowing that I'm going to fall in love with them all.
What I didn't like: My main complaint with any Lila Felix book is: it came to an end far too soon for me.
Would I recommend the book: I've never read a Lila Felix book that I did't love, this is no different. Once it is available, you really should read it.
Oh boy! Oh boy, where do I start? I LOVED this book. I loved how it was a paranormal romance, with shifters. And I love how it has a uniqueness to it - it’s black bears instead of wolves. AMAZING! It has the aspect of the dual POV’s which I really enjoy.
Hawke - what can I say about Hawke! He’s a great character, as the alpha of the pack he has to show strength, but he has this vulnerability which is so sweet, you just wanna give him a giant bear hug!!!
Echo - this is an amazing character. I love her strength. She also has the combo of strength and vulnerability. She’s so strong because she survived a hard life while still having a positiveness to her personality.
I've read a few of her books and I know she writes "clean", but for some reason I expected her to branch out at least a little bit since she was dipping her pen into the shifter world. I was wrong. It was squeaky clean. Even more so than other books I've read of hers. There was much talk of the "Creator" and staying a virgin until the mating night. It came off a wee bit preachy, even more so when a clan member was banished for stealing and having sex with a member from a different clan and they seemed more concerned about the sex than the cash. *shrug* This book may not add anything new to the genre and it doesn't delve very deep into any of the characters but if you like her other books you'll probably enjoy this.
There comes a time when a reader will read every single book of they're favorite author. I am one of those readers. Burden is Lila Felix's very first paranormal romance! When I heard this was in the works, I was like oh shit this is real! I was so excited! And boy when I got the ARC I ran through my house like a freaking maniac (my parents probably thought I was having a seizure or something)! My reasoning for five fantastical stars is because frankly that's what this book deserves! No, wait, that's not right. It deserves freaking MORE than that!! Unfortunately goodreads doesn't have a "more" option or I'd be pressing it. So should you read this book? Yay or nae? Uh duh! YAY!!! :D
I really enjoyed this book because it is fresh and different to the other shifter books. This book is about bear shifters. I was recommended it by a friend and I was a bit wary that I might not like it because even though I have read a book from this author before, which I really enjoyed, I thought that I might not like the whole bear shifter story but I am pleased it exceeded my expectations and I devoured this book. The story line flowed well, there was some funny bits here and there aswell. If you like the possessive, sweet, guy character then this book will be great for you. Looking forward to book 2!!
I liked this book, i really did. But, i wanted to love it. Beautiful cover. It really draws the reader in for sure. There was just something missing for me, I don't know if it was just too much "mates" and not enough action or plot for me or what, but i just liked it. I really enjoy dual POV, but i just found myself seeing some stuffy older man when i would read Hawke, not a rugged sexy bear man that i wanted to see in my mind. Still a good story, i am glad i read it. :)
Hmmm. I was disappointed by this. Blurb sucked me in and I totally magpied "ooooh, pretty!" the cover. Unfortunately it didn't live up to my expectations. I found myself having to reread sections of dialogue because I became confused with who was speaking--character voice wasn't developed well enough for it to be apparent at all times. I also found myself skim reading toward the end.
I read this based on a friends recommendation and as per usual she was right. It really was a lovely story, no real swearing, sex, violence was pretty tame actually and it was great!
This was honestly really good. Like i waant expecting much im a bit sad no bedroom scenes were included though lol and some things were told instead of shown the writing was a bit clumsy in places and the scene transitions and world building couldve been a bit better but in spite of those lil things that werent necessarily bad i really enjoyes this book and this world the characters had sooooo much going for them the realness my god. I liked that things werent always clear cut or instantly solvable and that there was some serious character development. Some things couldve been fleshed out more but i think with a bit more experience a bit more confidence and some sharper editing/formatting this writer could be seriously amazing. Im glad i took a chance on an author i wasnt familiar with and that wasnt a big or profilific writer. Im always looking for more true mate books especially bear ones and original stuff as well so this was really great. Just what i needed. The themes also really resonated with me too. The burden concept was relatable and i wished there had been a little more humour but what there was like believe me i see you one was cute and there was a really lovely quote by rev about respect and honesty and i really loved that. I liked that these shifters were real and it wasnt all shiny everything perfect lives and relationships and were shifters and that solves everything and makes our lives amazingly happy 24/7 i feel like this made it that much more real and rewarding. They were more human than human characters and the shifter part wasnt used as like some novelty to pop in but ingrained naturally as it should be as a part of them rather than just a hulk type thing wheres its like oh we need some noise lets do a cheesy gimmicky thing and get the green dude to smash stuff haha so funny... bleh no i loved this. It showed a different way to be alphas as well it wasnt the cut and dry hard and fast cliche all the way type of heirachy either. Yep for me this was 4 stars. I hope the series either keeps that stabdard or gets better either way im glad i found the author i hope she continues exploring and learning and pouring her passion and pain into these worlds so i can grow with her characters and her career.
I am on a shifter kick lately it seems, but I absolutely must talk about this series that I found a while ago. Burden is A Bayou Bear Shifter Romance written by Lila Felix. Since I first bought it two years ago, I have read this book cover to cover maybe fifty times. The plot is simple, and does not deviate much from the standard shifter romance story. An Alpha wolf finds his sassy, strong mate who is trying to "find" who she is, and despite a few "bumps" and miscommunication along the way, their love blossoms into a sweet and innocent happily ever after with a cliffhanger left for secondary characters. There is nothing wrong with adopting this plot template, however many authors fall into the trap of making it too predictable and bland. Lila Felix creatively sidesteps this by developing wholesome and well-rounded characters who you will adore and by sticking to a strong storyline. It is for how well-written and comforting her story is why I return to it after a long and stressful day. After you read this book, everytime you reopen it, it will feel like coming home.
I would rate this book a 4 out of 5 stars simply because I wanted more details and content in the plot because the characters were so engaging. This book is most likely best suited for individuals in high school, but again as a College senior I am in love with this book. I look forward to reading more of Lila Felix's work and reading the rest of the Bayou Bear Shifter Romance series. I also recommend following her on Instagram @authorlilafelix for new releases and her current reading!

This books was generic and predictable while also being poorly written. Generic in the sense that it was like any other shifter romance story with a bit of neglect/abuse mixed in, but all the action/drama scenes were rushed and downplayed. Any action that occurred in the book whether it was a fight, an argument, or some dramatic gesture took up maybe 1 paragraph worth of space. The rest of the book was background information or detailed accounts of the main characters daily habits. Not to mention the characters aren’t flushed out and they don’t act in such a way that reflects their history. Echo is supposed to be a victim of abuse and maltreatment from her old pack but all of that history is brushed past or forgotten and somehow had no real major affect on her character. Like there are moments when Echo feels the effects of her captivity and then right after it’s as if she was never abused for the first 21 years of her life. A lot of the book just wasn’t real enough, I guess. Also, there are grammar mistakes everywhere.
I think the potential for this to be a better story is there. There are definitely interesting plot twists but really it needs to be flushed out with more detail, more realistic character traits, and with better grammar.
So this book could've been good, I love kind of slice of life books but the book needs to make it interesting...
This book mostly only focuses on Echo and Hawk, which isn't bad if both of them weren't so bland. And if there weren't so many inconsistencies. Echo is supposed to be this traumatized young woman who lived her whole life in abuse but she doesn't have any trauma? It's said she's overly thin in the beginning, but it doesn't translate any other way, not in the way she eats, not in the way she behaves. Also the way she reacts doesn't make any sense overall, she behaves like a normal young woman, not like she was abused and shelttered, which good for her! But why give her this backsotry if she wasn't going to be written accordingly? Make her a kidnapped girl, leaving in a bad clan/sleuth whatever, where females aren't respected and she's somewhat on the sidelines but not... this abused. it's not coherent.
Also, Hawk's clan story didn't make sense. It's like the beginning of the book was written and the author changed their mind midway through, all of a sudden the clan was in bad shape.
Whatever, the incensistencies really made this hard to read, same with the mate thing, are the fated mates or can Echo just find a new mate wtf
I absolutely adored Hawke and Echo. I loved their personalities and the way their relationship progressed.
Echo has always felt like a burden, an outcast that no one cared for, an irritant they couldn’t shake. I loved how well Hawke treated her. He was kind, gentle and the sweetest alpha ever. He didn’t just accept Echo but dignified her. Giving her the love and respect she deserved.
Hawke had a somewhat sheltered upbringing. Only after his father’s death did he realize what sort of person his father actually was. With so many wrongs to right, Echo was the perfect mate for him. She was intelligent, resourceful, hardworking and she genuinely loved and wanted to help others.
Their attraction was undeniable and their chemistry was tangible. This was a sweet slow burn romance without the explicit content, which i appreciate very much. This was a pleasant surprise. I most definitely enjoyed this book.
