Emergence Vol 1 - Introduction

Rate this book
This eye-opening book will show you why people think the way they do, why some are so difficult to deal with, and why they disagree with each other so much. It also throws light on the great changes happening in the world. It is a simple introduction to Spiral Dynamics Integral (SDi), based on the work of Professor Clare Graves. For decades it has been successfully employed around the globe creating and implementing solutions to social conflicts and business problems. SDi shows that human nature is not fixed. It evolves. The way people think depends on their life conditions, as we can see from watching children's thinking develop as they grow up. And we have the in-built capacity to think in new more complex ways when our life conditions change. Organisations, nations and civilisations evolve in exactly the same way. Each stage of development on the spiral of the evolution of consciousness is characterised by a value system that contains and permeates every aspect of our lifestyle or culture, yet the core values and beliefs are tucked away so deeply inside us that we are not usually aware of them and are surprised when others do not share them. Understanding how this evolutionary dynamic manifests in individuals, societies and cultures provides the key to building good relationships by ending friction ranging from office arguments to major conflicts and wars. And you may be surprised to find that everyone is doing the best they can, all the time. Even if what they do looks stupid or wrong to observers - anger, violence, blaming others, running away, not doing what they agreed to do, taking refuge in illness - it may be the only way a person can cope. The only way they know how to cope at their level of evolution.

A Great Introduction

I thought this was a great introduction to the understanding of Spiral Dynamics especially for a layman like me. I have read about it before but this book gave me explanations that cleared up my confusion between the first tier levels. The author gave some great examples about how multiple levels are in play in recent problems around the world.

I look forward to reading the next volume in the series.

short but compelling read but probably something it come back to from time to time also - an interesting analysis of how we find such difficulties relating to each other across ideologies and life approaches- and you do recognise yourself in so much of it, whether you want to or not - bring on vol 2 please

Good info, rough format

Great overview/synopsis of Spiral Dynamics. Reads almost like a wordy outline or course notes. Valuable text despite the presentation. References a forthcoming sequel/volume that evidently hasn’t been written (yet?).

This is a handy introductory to what could be a complex topic. I appreciate the simplicity of the writing and look forward to volume 2.
