A disabled ex-Army officer turned world-class cryptographer...a beautiful FBI agent...and a ruthless murderer on the loose in Atlanta.

A heartless killer ambushes and guns down ex-mobster Jay Mancini. Days later, the killer disposes of Mancini's live-in girlfriend in cold blood. Desperate to identify the culprit, Jay's niece Chelsea convinces work colleague and amateur detective Alton Blackwell to help investigate the seemingly run-of-the-mill professional mob hits.

Alton and his girlfriend, FBI Agent Mallory Wilson, race to sequester Chelsea away from wrathful mob gangsters intent on silencing anyone with knowledge of "family activities." But the investigation spirals out of control as a series of new events with no apparent mob connection serves to confound their efforts to identify the assassin. As Alton and Mallory struggle to make sense of scant evidence, unseen danger marches inexorably closer to them and Chelsea, who seems to lie in the vortex of the mayhem. Will Alton and Mallory unravel the mystery in time to avoid becoming the killer's next victims? And will their growing relationship survive the presence of the beautiful Chelsea Mancini?

Combining edge-of-your-seat psychological thrills with a side of romance, RUTHLESS keeps readers guessing until the final clue is revealed.

I received a free copy of this 143 page ebook in exchange of an honest review.

When I was asked by author friend Steven F. Freeman to check out his book Ruthless, I decided to check it out. When Chelsea Mancini's Uncle and his girlfriend are viciously murdered by a ruthless killer, Chelsea fears for her life as she thinks her family might kill her next. She hires Alton Blackwell and FBI Agent Mallory Wilson to help her solve the mystery of who killed them and who wants to take her out. As they dig deeper into the truth, more people die. Can they stop this nefarious crime spree before this ruthless killer strikes again? Read the book to find out.

I enjoyed checking this book out. The gang from Nefarious are all back again and there is tons of action, mystery and suspense for any thriller fan to check out. Definitely check this book out if you are a fan of thrillers.

An exciting, well-written thriller by a new author (new to me, at least).

Ruthless by Steven F. Freeman has many things going for it. I like how it starts out with an exciting scene that grabs your attention and makes you want to keep reading to find out what happens. I also like the author’s style of using short chapters. On the one hand, this keeps you reading because you always think you can read “just one more.” On the other hand, it also means you have many convenient stopping points, which is good for someone like me who likes to read in short bits at breakfast, lunch and when going to bed. For a kindle publication, it’s very well-formatted and edited, and the writing and use of vocabulary is also very good with bits of southern flair thrown in for fun.

I was able to figure out who done it well before the big reveal, but I actually like it when it is possible for the reader to figure things out. I don’t like solutions that rely on information hidden from the reader.

One thing I found a bit funny at times was the author’s obvious Christian-friendly approach. There was no swearing or vulgarity, which many readers might appreciate. One character was said to be a bit lewd and fond of eye-rolling humor. I feel it is more realistic when we as readers are directly exposed to character traits rather than being informed of what those traits are. Just let us hear those lewd jokes and make up our own minds about the person. There was also a bit of moralizing on abstinence until marriage. I’m not writing this as criticism, but rather as an observation. I think non-Christian, but Christian-friendly books might potentially have a very big market, especially in the US. The approach worked for Creed, after all.

Note: I accidentally read this before reading book 1 of the series, which kind of spoils some of the story there. This book is completely readable without knowing the first, but now I know who survives the first book. I’ll just have to wait till I’ve forgotten much of this book.

This book is the sequel to author Steven F. Freeman's Nefarious and did not disappoint. I found Ruthless to be an excellent read. It was great to reunite with the extremely likable main protagonists that I first met in Nefarious. Unlike Nefarious, this story took place entirely in the United States, with Alton Blackwell back in civilian life. The book got off to a running start with two murders accomplished by page 25. This was followed by several other incidents that added to the mystery. Though the investigation took some time to fully develop and slowed a portion of the first two thirds of the book, the overall read was fast. The last 100 pages of the 298 page story picked up speed significantly and had me totally engaged. The reveal was engrossing, the ending highly satisfying. Mr. Freeman does a wonderful job with character development, which I loved. There was a background of romance in the story; this was tame and not distracting. The gory/graphic titer was low.

There are 4 books in the Blackwell Files series and I have just started the 3rd book, T Wave. There is a 4th book, Havoc, soon to come out as well. I am hoping that Mr. Freeman continues to add books to this very enjoyable series; I plan to read them all.

4 Star

I couldn't quite find 5 stars in this but it is a good mystery. I had it figured out way before the end. It's clean without any cursing and no sex so that is different in this day and age. It is good enough that I will read some more in the series.

I've been incredibly lucky as my copy was given to me by the author in exchange for an honest review.

"A heartless killer ambushes and guns down ex-mobster Jay Mancini. Days later, the killer disposes of Mancini’s live-in girlfriend in cold blood. Desperate to identify the culprit, Jay’s niece Chelsea convinces work colleague and amateur detective Alton Blackwell to help investigate the seemingly run-of-the-mill professional mob hits."

After reading Nefarious and absolutely loving it, I was really excited to pick up the next book in the series, and this certainly didn't disappoint! If anything, I actually preferred it to the first one in the series. I think my favourite thing about Freeman's writing is the structure of the books. The chapters are quite short and choppy, which I think makes it very easy to read and engaging. You find yourself saying "oh just one more chapter" and before you know it, you've finished the book because you just don't realise you're even reading it. With longer chapters, sometimes they tend to drag on and by the time you've finished a chapter, you just want to put the book down and go and do something else. This is not the case for Freeman.

He writes beautifully and gives you just enough detail to keep you reading and yet not enough for you to figure out "whodunnit" before the end. Then the big reveal happens and suddenly it all makes sense. I feel like Freeman is a master at always leaving you wanting more. From start to end, I could barely put my ereader down. Then my ereader broke and I just knew that I had to continue reading it, so I actually went through the trouble of sending it to another device and whatnot, just to finish it.

I love the fact that the crime scenes are described respectfully. There's not much gore or crudeness, and certainly nothing over the top that needn't have been there. There's no comments about gruesome body bits missing or the depth of the blood splatter or something. It's just a pure, true mystery and nothing is handled disrespectfully. I believe this proves that you can have a wonder of a crime thriller without disgusting people with unnecessary blood, guts or gore. My respect goes out to Freeman for that.

The plot is engaging, I fell in love with all of the (incredibly well developed) characters, and I loved seeing Alton and Mallory's relationship flourish as the novel went on. It's also nice to see that no character ever behaves out of their own personality or ability. No one is a wonderful, does it all, superhero. It's a true, real, gritty novel full of suspense and mystery. Freeman has done it again, and produced a wonderful crime thriller. I cannot WAIT to get started on the third in the series.

It was a joy to read, and I recommend the entire series to anyone and everyone. You've done it again, Freeman, and I give you my highest regard.

I received this book from the author for a honest review.
Most of the time I find that the second book in a series isn't as good as the first, but that's not the case with this one. It was just as good as the first! I love Alton and Mallory together the make an awsome team it always seems like the can solve any problem. They both pay so much attention to the minor details that most people would over look. In this book we got to see that Mallory is just as good as Alton connecting the dots to get the whole picture. I'm looking forward to the next book!

I was offered the opportunity to read this book by the author in return for a honest review.
I really enjoyed this fast paced thriller mystery so much that I read it within 24 hours. The characters were well developed, believable and well written. The plot is gripping and the fast pace makes sure that you want to carry on reading and not put it down. I had never heard of this author and I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of his work. I strongly recommend this book and I will read more of his work.

I had a very difficult time reading this book. Between the short pointless chapters and slow meandering plot it kept turning me off. A "Mob hit" in Atlanta lead to several other murders. I'm not sure who the actual protagonist was supposed to be. The plot was entirely too slow. Hard not to fall asleep reading it. Was surely not my cup of tea. I gave it 2 stars out of 5. Truth be told, I was glad to be done with it.

In his second novel, Steve Freeman's characters, Alton and Mallory, find themselves tracking a relentless killer - or are they the ones being tracked? With mafia, murder, and a romantic interloper this book in the series has something for everyone. Freeman has honed his craft in this novel and it shows in the smart twists and turns, as well as the realism of the dialog. Can't wait for the next installment!

I won this book on a Goodreads giveaway, and I was so glad that I did. Great book.
The author gets your attention right away. I didn't want to put the book down. There is plenty of mystery to this book which holds your attention throughout. This book had well developed characters. There was some romance mixed in with the mystery which was a added bonus.
Would definitely recommend this book. Can't wait to see what will happen next.....

In Ruthless, Freeman has again produced a masterful piece, keeping us guessing the perpetrator. A little light jealousy from Mallory gives Freeman the chance for Alton to express his feelings for her. A masterful stroke throughout as one murder after another is perpetrated and the reader is led on a wild goose chase, tying up the extraneous characters until the real culprit is revealed. My kind of mystery.

I was asked to read this book in exchange for a truthful review. The truth I loved it from start to finish. I have given five stars yet again I would have given more if I could. I loved the fact that the main characters from the first book is in this book. This book some twists and turns I thought I figured out who murdered who but no another twist at the end. I would recommend this book it was fantastic. Again well done on this book and thank you for the chance to read your books.

Alton does it again....

Who is this mysterious Hoodie and what do the victims have in common? Alton Blackwell uses his keen observation and intellect while putting himself in harms way to flush out the killer. Although Volume 2 of the Blackwell Files stands on its own, it is great to see the further development of Alton's relationship with Mallory continue from Volume 1.

This book only took me a day to read. It pulled me in from the very beginning and I couldn't put it down . Although I figured out who the killer was before they tell you in the book, I still enjoyed the book to the end.

Ruthless is the second book in the Blackwell Files series.

Thank you to Steve Freeman for the first time he asked me if I was interested in reviewing one of his books. That book was Tears of God, the seventh book in the Blackwell Files series. I loved the characters and his writing style in that book and the subsequent read, The Dig. I went back to the first book in the series to start at the beginning. So, after finishing Nefarious I got onto Ruthless. Neither book disappointed and I am eager to continue catching up with Alton and Mallory as well as David and Fahima in the next episode of their lives.

I should say while I am now reading them in sequence it is not necessary, they do standalone quite well. Freeman includes just enough information if you haven’t read earlier books but does not bog down the reader who has.

Ruthless has a well written storyline gripping the reader with plenty of action, mystery, suspense and a touch of romance

I love the characters. Alton and Mallory complement each other both in personality and skills for solving the crime. Their romance is slowly developing but not dominating the story.

There is a little sub-mystery involving David and Fahima who met and fell in love in the first book. Will they be able to overcome red tape, so she can join him in the US?

I enjoy Freeman’s writing because he gets straight into his story line without any unnecessary preamble. The momentum grows throughout until the final reveal. There are no dull or boring patches.

Ruthless is pure mystery free from undue violence, gore or sex scenes

There are plenty of twists and turns. I guessed the who but not how or why.

I am eagerly looking forward to the next book in the series. Just the development of Alton and Mallory, as well as David and Fahima relationships, while knowing there will be another good read, will push me on.

If you love reading mysteries/thrillers in a series don’t miss The Blackwell Files.

A wasted second chance. This is the second book in a multiple book series that will be the last book in the series for me. I was distinctly unimpressed by the first book in the series, but I decided to give the author a second chance. Bad decision. This second book had infantile character, stilted conversations, and an underwhelming love story preaching sexual abstinence, while an obsessive, miinor character tries to eliminate all competitors for her roommate's attention. It is outrageously unlikely that this mouse of a woman could murder a mob member and several other people to secure her friendship with her roommate, and also, that the romantic leads would host a suspects get-together at the end of the novel to point out everyone's flaws and then name the mouse as the murderer. The mouse quickly confessed and then dramatically put a gun she had handy in her mouth in front of everyone and pulled the trigger.

Sorry for all the spoilers, but if they prevent potential readers from picking up this book, these spoilers are warranted.

I FOUND THE CHARACTERS KINDA STRANGE, SOMETHING ABOUT THEM SEEMED UNREAL. I DID ENJOY THE STORY LINE BUT THE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN THEM WAS JUST OFF (almost too nice) REAL PEOPLE JUST ARE NOT THAT POLITE ANYMORE. I DID ENJOY TRYING TO FIGURE OUT THE MYSTERY. THINKING ABOUT ALL TECHNOLOGY HAS CHANGED THE WORLD, SAD IT HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO IMPROVE HUMANITY INSTEAD IT HAS MADE MOST OF US MORE INHUMANE. IT MAY HAVE MADE SOME THINGS EASIER TO DO BUT IT HAS RUINED SOCIETY. A REAL HOT COVER! ;]

A man who walked away from the mob is murdered. Turns out he was retired army officer Alton Blackwell's co-worker's uncle. Chelsea is beautiful and soon it becomes apparent she is a target. Alton'slove interest Mallory the FBI agent reluctantly joins forces with Alton to help Chelsea. But is their focus on the mob misplaced?

While I still like Alton, the other characters have suffered from an overdose of sugar. Too sweet, pure and unbelievable. alton's little plans are annoying and the be reveal with a gathering of suspects is contrived. I identified the killer early on. Disappointing.

Good storyline ...

After reading Book 1 I was anxious to read this one. In all fairness the storyline was good but I found the subservient role of law enforcement to Alton Blackwell annoying. Just ain't never gonna happen this way. If you can get past that I would call it a good read.

Technically well done.

For some reason, the writing failed to engage me. I don’t understand the reason.

I didn’t feel involved with the characters, although i wanted to.

Not impressed whatsoever. Too many holes in the story, a character who has no business being in the story (gee, who is the killer?) and,by the way, who solves a crime by bringing all the suspects together in a room? And why wouldn’t we want to mention our stakeout idea to the FBI?

Dumb dumb dumb.

Intriguing story

The author has written a very intriguing story about how a person with security issues reacts when they perceive they’re being ignored. The author has done a very good job of keeping suspense in the story and keeping the reader guessing.

Good read

While this book is not as fast moving as the first book, I liked the way the author develops the plot and characters. I got the impression that the author was deliberately hiding the facts of the story and felt that was a tad tedious.

Good

A bit too heavy on the romance between the characters for my taste, but enjoyed the story line otherwise, good job.
