Major General David Hunter scowled as he looked upon the bodies of six Union soldiers who’d been tied to a fence then murdered by rebel bushwhackers. “If they wish to unleash hell on our troops, let’s see how they like it when we give them the devil’s own inferno straight back!”It’s spring of 1864, and Nathan Chambers and his men are reeling from the devastating Union defeat at New Market. But a new commanding general, David Hunter, promises to bring more experience and aggressive leadership to the Union’s floundering Shenandoah Valley Campaign.
Nathan’s hopes immediately come to fruition, as the Twelfth West Virginia Regiment finally wins a decisive, uplifting victory at the Battle of Piedmont. But afterward, General Hunter seems more intent on burning and destroying rebel property than in pursuing the retreating rebel army. Crafty Confederate General Jubal Early seizes this opportunity to strike back and launch his own brutal campaign of burning and devastation, with the help of Confederate Colonel Elijah Walters, who aims to take advantage of the growing conflagration to destroy his hated enemy Nathan Chambers.
On the Richmond espionage front, Evelyn Hanson is once again the target of the ruthless Confederate Signal Corps’ officer, Major White, who recruits reluctant allies—Evelyn’s friend Jubal Collins, and her mother Harriet!Meanwhile, Tony and the freemen from Nathan’s farm train for a top-secret mission against the rebel fortifications surrounding Petersburg. But will incompetent and indecisive Union generals once again fail to secure a sorely needed victory?
Nathan and Evelyn find themselves sinking ever deeper into the raging war, threatening to descend into a hellish Inferno.
Chris A. Bennett grew up on the shores of Klamath Lake in southeastern Oregon. For a young boy it was a dream world of water, hills, forests, and abundant wildlife. His love for action and adventure morphed into a lifelong love for books when his Mom read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings to the family on a long road trip.
It was routine and normal for the family dinner table discussions to involve history, politics, and anything interesting going on in the world. So, when he attended the University of Oregon it seemed perfectly natural (and easy) to study history and political science. But everyone said you couldn't make a living in those fields, so he decided to try his hand at Computer Science. He's been writing professionally, in the software development business for more than 35 years now.
However, Chris's thirst for adventure never faded and he began to live out his love of history onto the pages of his first book, Road to the Breaking. Once he started writing he just couldn't stop and the result is The Road to the Breaking series; an epic journey across a young nation seething with debauchery, brutality, corruption, and political intrigue, unwittingly on the brink of an unimaginable disaster: the American Civil War.
Chris currently lives near Seattle with his wife Patricia. His three adult children Nick, Rachel, and Josh also live in the Puget Sound area.
Another excellent installment in the Road to Breaking series. I have thoroughly enjoyed each book and the compelling characters that populate the pages. Even though it will be a year before Resolve comes out, I can't wait for the conclusion.
Road to the Breaking was so intense, a page turner, I read straight through from the first through the ninth book! How will I ever make it till number ten is released in 2025. Love southern history. This was the most I’ve read more from the Union side. (Living in Alabama). Mr. Bennett’s characters are so real they are pictures in my mind. You can feel the heartache of the battles, loved ones left waiting, not knowing what tomorrow would bring. Was impressed by the strength of the Southern ladies. When doing what was the right thing to do, they didn’t hesitate.
We need to keep our history alive. Shame on this government for removing southern statutes and changing the names of our southern forts. We don’t forget.
As I m retired I read a lot.. I also like history. Although this is fiction it follows history during the civil war. Lincoln and generals on both sides quite well. The characters re well done. I look forward to the release of book 10. A thanks to he author.
I am fascinated at how Mr. Bennett has taken family history and actual battles to entertwine a fascinating tale of the Civil War that is interesting to all readers I have thoroughly enjoyed reading all 9 books . Waiting for #10.

Road to Breaking is the best written series I have read to date. I have traveled the area this series is set in from Winchester to Wheeling and the Shenandoah Valley which makes it all the more enjoyable. Well done Mr. Bennett.
I’ve been glued to this amazing series since the first book and I will be sad when it ends but I’m sure Mr Bennett will write more books which I will eagerly devour. I would most certainly recommend this series, ‘Road to the Breaking’ to anyone.
I don't really have words to explain what a great series this is. So much real history mixed with a great fictional story! Some of the best reading so far this month!
