Norm Feuti's daily comic strip, RETAIL, presents a hilarious look at the retail industry by chronicling the daily events at the fictitious Grumbel’s department store. The humor of RETAIL plays out through the day-to-day trials and triumphs of four main Grumbel’s department store employees (Marla, Cooper, Val, and Stuart) and the customers they encounter. This is the first collected volume of Retail comics, and contains every strip that ran in 2006 - the year it debuted in newspapers throughout the US and Canada.
Clean up in aisle 3... Management passing the buck... Upper management counting on people but refusing to learn names... oh and the crazy customers that make it all go round...
Okay, fine- I may have cheated a little by adding this one.
Don't get me wrong, I did read the strips! .... But I read them online.
Them, and the other X years' worth of comics. In preparation of leaving my retail job in favor of a nice, cozy office, while serving my two weeks, I went through the entirety of this comic, from beginning to end- and given just how much of it there is, that is definitely saying something important about the entertainment value.
Later down the line there is some repetition (although you probably only notice that if you binge-read like I did), but all in all, it was a great read that kept me entertained while I was waiting for the other shoe to drop, and i'll definitely keep up to date with it in my empty afternoon hours.
I believe I have been reading this comic since it started, and I can really relate well to it, as I have plenty of retail experience in my past.
I am thinking Norm Feuti must have even worked at the same retail chain, in a different location, because some of his strips are extremely close like what I have experienced at a particular store I used to work for.
I really like the style this comic is drawn in, and the humor is very relatable.
It was a little disappointing that there are not a few strips in color, which probably means the Sunday funnies are missing? Also, I am wondering why the rest of the years are not published. I really hope they get published eventually.
My favorite comics of the series are usually around Halloween, because Cooper dresses up in a great costume, and no one gets who is supposed to be.
The comic is available to read online as well.
Ultimate Nerd Reading Challenge - A book with a body part in the title.
I started reading the strip once I saw some singles being posted on Facebook. I see why everyone is sharing--the strip in funny, relatable and you'll find that it really shines in the Halloween depiction.
This is one of my favorite comic strips and I'm so glad they finally came out with a collection of the first year. The interactions between the employees and the customers are so ridiculous, but, as anyone who has worked retail knows, so true!
