Two killers, when not on the road, share a compound in Los Angeles. One of them allows his necrophiliac brother to move into the main house. Meanwhile, a teenager—forced to kill a husband and wife who cheated on each other with her—flees to Los Angeles and falls in love with a bloodthirsty woman who lives with the two killers and the necrophiliac. When the necrophiliac sets his sights on the bloodthirsty woman’s new girlfriend, chaos quickly ensues. Fans of dark, transgressive fiction will enjoy this harrowing novella.
This of is full of chaos and when I say chaos, it’s the best kind of chaos! It’s got some great twists and turns and you begin to wonder who will make it to the end of the book and if there’s enough characters to survive to fill the 138 pages! Drugs, blood, guts, gore, brains and a whole lot more!
Grinding Road is a brutal and fast paced story, full of drugs, alcohol, and general debauchery. This is a theme in many of his books and I’m addicted to his style.
I was also happy to see characters and situations from previous books show up. It was a fun addition to this story.
Many characters start out with individual stories and lives, before they intersect with others in this transgressive, gory, and violent tale. Killers and a necrophiliac are just some of the characters you’ll meet as you turn the pages, eager for more of Bowyer’s talent.
Bringing his Road Trilogy to an end in style, this was a bloodbath from the first few paragraphs until the final pages… again, there is so much to admire about Bowyer’s prose, so cut back and streamlined, it’s just the facts and the facts cut like knives!
I enjoyed the fact that this one twisted and turned so much you didn’t know if you were coming or going and who was going to make it out alive.
As always, after some large and weighty books, I return to Bowyer as a palate cleanser and he never fails… this one is brutal, bloody and batshit crazy!
I went into this unknowingly that Grinding Road interlinks with Road Harvest and Road Narrows. After finishing and based off other reviews it seems that all three can be read as standalones. Off to read the other two!
Another fantastic book from Brain. Love everything I've read of his. The third in the road series, but all can be read as standalone. As always everyone is a fucking psycho... and I love it. :)
Obscenely depraved characters, gripping prose, incredibly dark humor and ultraviolence galore combine to make this a must-read for fans of transgressive fiction. Check it out!
GRINDING ROAD is one hell of a novella from Brian Bowyer. Nearly every character is sadistic and one named DeVonte may be the author's sickest, and possibly scariest, so far. And I loved a crazy dwarf named Ivan Sawyer as well. As usual with Bowyer's books, there are entertaining references to pop culture and little history lessons spoken in the dialogue, such as a cult called the Ant Hill Kids. I never heard of it before and it freaked me out in a good way. The interwinding narrative ties up beautifully as the book works its way to the conclusion and I highly recommend the book for fans of splatterpunk.
Brian Bowyer's Grinding Road was one fast-paced, brutal killfest! This book was loads of fun! Drugs, alcohol, and murder, lots of murder! Every chapter brought new twists and brutal deaths. Brian's writing is sharp, and he has devised some of the sickest characters in this one. If you're not reading Brian's work then you're missing out on some fantastic stories! Extreme and depraved, I recommend giving this one a read!
A fun account of a series of underworldy, torturous, bloody deaths were absolutely nothing can be taken for granted.
Although lacking in any depth, the killings come thick and fast with non-stop action from start to finish. Plenty of great characters, and some highly imaginative ideas which certainly hit the right spot for me.
A ‘what you see is what you get’ works well here, though the dialogue and narrative does tend to change in an instant.
Anyway, just heard the van turn up, so time for dinner now - then another gruesome and grisly, easy-read BB adventure to digest before retiring to bed.
Yep, overall I thoroughly enjoyed this quick read horror experience.
A terrific new exploration of casual violence, teenage psychopathy and all kinds of perversion, by the pen of Brian Bowyer! This time the message is clear: no matter how bad you got it, there's always worse; the universe simply does not care. The concept of fairness, the idea of justice, they're both missing in Bowyer's world. But an other major notion is present: love. It's hard to come up with a sense of love flourishing in such stories, but Bowyer always makes space for it. Integral to the plot, yet neither a need nor a necessity: love is just the outcome of chance - a 20-year-old psychopath meeting a teenage girl on a bus stop. Love, sex, and some time for reflection, woven into a cycle of booze, drugs, and cold killings. Highly recommended!
Brian Bowyer writes extreme horror that’s addictive as hell. I bloody love his books. Only a skilled writer can have you rooting for messed-up serial killers. Blood, brains, sex, drugs, violence, torture, whiskey and cigarettes. Damn, I loved this very!
Brian Bowyer’s Grinding Road is an adrenaline-fueled dive into human nature's raw and brutal aspects. This book is not for the faint of heart, but for readers who crave a gritty, unapologetic tale of survival, betrayal, and chaos, it’s a must-read. Bowyer delivers a visceral experience that grips you from the first page and doesn’t let go.
🚨 Spoilers Ahead! 🚨
The story weaves through the lives of a cast of morally complex characters, each grappling with their own demons as they navigate a world of violence and betrayal. DeVonte, Garrett, Felicia, and a host of others form a tangled web of crime, survival, and revenge. From gruesome torture scenes to shocking betrayals, every chapter is packed with tension and raw emotion.
One of the standout elements of Grinding Road is its approach to storytelling. Bowyer doesn’t shy away from the ugly side of humanity, painting a vivid picture of a world where survival often means making brutal choices. The vivid descriptions of violence are balanced by moments of dark humor and unexpected camaraderie, making the story as compelling as it is disturbing.
Favorite Quote: “Some roads take you home, but the Grinding Road only grinds you down.”
While the book’s graphic content may not be for everyone, those who appreciate extreme horror and intense, character-driven storytelling will find themselves hooked. Bowyer has a knack for creating flawed, multi-dimensional characters that feel disturbingly real.
Grinding Road is the perfect read if you’re ready for a wild, blood-soaked journey that will leave you questioning the limits of morality.
This horror novel of creatively dispersed extreme horror throughout its pages was voted as the Group Read Selection for the month of June by HGW Horror Book Club. It holds special significance for me because it was the first horror book club to reach out with an invitation to join. All of the clubs I have joined since have all been special, but HGW is really darker than dark (a good thing if you like Extreme Horror).
This short work of horror fiction was released earlier this year and is from the prolific author of extreme horror and Splatterpunk Brian Bowyer. This was my first brush with Brian’s work. It was compulsively readable because the characters who walked, sliced, diced, and tortured throughout its pages were all uniquely interesting because of their bizarre pathologies. I never knew what was going to happen next. The author was incredibly imaginative with the exploits, the kinks, and the passions of his book chock full of lunatics.
The description tells us that two killers (when not on the highway) share a swank compound in LA. Jinx invites his necrophiliac brother to move into the main house with him and Leo. Meanwhile teenage Kaitlyn kills in self-defense when a married couple accidently learn that she is cheating with both of them. It would seem that both of them had wanted Kaitlyn for the long haul and turned their rage on Kaitlyn. She knew she had to murder them, but it felt so good. She decides to flee to LA with one hiccough along the way which only reaffirmed that she really liked the feeling of killing.
In LA Tina is in a lesbian relationship with rich author Roxanne, but they mutually decide to see other people. This opens the door to musical chairs (beds?) There is a lot of action and surprising bits of imaginative extreme horror throughout.
I guess that it was inevitable that the necrophiliac [Devonte] would set his sights on Kaitlyn, the new love of Tina's life. Chaos definitely does ensue. I liked the ending of this although that may make me sound cold----nah! Anyway, at the very end of this short work of extreme horror, the moral of the story is obvious. It is that the players may change, but bad, horrible things will continue to happen. I think I will read other works by Brian Bowyer.
I hit this dark, transgressive novella in one sitting. My Bowyer-fix is off to an excellent start this year.
Booze, drugs, sex, surgical implements, a necrophiliac, and my personal favorite - politicians with a yen for cannibalism - make this an excellent dark read.
Of course, there's much more. You'll need to read "Grinding Road" to find out. Highly recommend.
Man Brian Bowyer just fuckin rocks.. They way he writes is so awesome the characters, the drugs, the alcohol, the blood, the killing, the brutal fucking chaos.Brian Bowyer just has a way of writing that even though all this crazy shit is going on its always just a smooth wild crazy fun read. I highly recommend this and all of Brian Bowyer's work
In Grinding Road, rampant blood lust propels the characters to enact their darkest fantasies. High levels of splatter & unhinged characters make for a downright entertaining read. I laughed more than once as the blood flew. A very good time!
It's fast-paced and highly entertaining. How many psychopaths can you fit under one roof?? Idk but it equates to CHAOS. My commentary rounded out to be "Ummm okay", "what the fuck?" and "omfg" every few paragraphs. I loved the casualty between characters when discussing depraved things like the average person would discuss their plans for the weekend. I couldn't help but smile and giggle lol.
Fast Paced, don’t blink Wow what a ride, this book just get s stuck right into it. Plenty of crazy characters. If you like Splatterpunk horror then this is worth a read.
I was misguided by the reviews on here. I don't know what I expected by this blurb but it wasn't a shitpost wattpad story. My cousin could have written something like this and shes twelve and english is not her native language. Some paragraphs literally doubled and I'm livid. Then the acutal gore scenes (except for one, that was magnificent) were like a fever dream. No, really, I didn't get to read them because they were literally a fever dream of one of the protagonists and boom dismembered body on the floor. I won't even mention those two dimensional characters. I didn't expect any different tbh, also everyone being a serial killer or some other type of psychopath. That's what I signed up for right? It was a fast read, let's give the book that at least.
And the fact that I'm actually writing a review means I feel deeply about this. Mostly rage though.
