About the author

Laurence Holt, a serial entrepreneur and a fanatic on the science of learning, created the first Stikky books while on sabbatical in Umbria, Italy. The Stikky approach is based on how people actually learn, starting with small pieces of knowledge and systematically building on them into a comprehensive picture. In 2004, the series won the AEP's Distinguished Achievement Award for Excellence in Educational Publishing. A major update and reprinting of the series began in 2023.

This was probably my favorite book all summer!

What a unique and well thought out book! It teaches you step by step how to identify and find multiple constellations and stars in the night sky. It's easy enough to follow that even my kids were able to learn with me. If you are wanting to learn more about identifying stars, constellations, and planets, this is a great place to start.

Do you ever look up at the night sky and wonder how travelers used to navigate using constellations and planet/star alignments? Maybe you are like me, thinking it seems impossible to learn now. That was my thinking until reading this Stikky Night Skies book that teaches you the constellations and even how to navigate using the night sky in just 3 sections.

The Stikky method of learning will transform you from a complete beginner to night sky navigator in no time. The foolproof method of learning builds up on concepts as you read through the book. The excellent illustrations help tremendously with pointing out the different stars and planets. You really can't go wrong.

Not only has this been a great read for myself, but it has made its way into the heart of my family's homeschooling journey. My children love knowing what they are seeing in the night sky now. This has definitely enhanced our skills. I cannot recommend this book enough!

I was impressed by this book, which teaches you how to identify constellations, stars, planets, and galaxies. All of this learning takes place in about an hour. It is simple enough that children can learn right alongside you. What I love the most is that the information is presented in digestible chunks and easy to take in. The book would make a great gift.

This book is so brilliantly beautiful I barely felt like I was learning.....yet I learned so much. I never thought I would have any knowledge or information which would enable me to look up at the sky and identify things. Now I can and that is amazing!

The formatting of Sikky is crafted to help make the information stick. I truly loved the formatting and appreciated the introduction tips. I found them to be incredibly helpful. I also adored all the pictures! They truly help cement the information.

Very unique and effective approach to learning about the sky.

Learn six constellations, four stars, a planet, a galaxy and how to navigate at night- in just one hour. They are kind of a ‘Track Stars for Dummies’ type book! I feel like a pro now! (Okay- let’s not get too confident!) But truly the step by step progression in the books is amazing.

I think I even could find Orion’s Belt now! I need to get somewhere with less light pollution and see how much I learned. It was really fascinating to read and learn more and build confidence in something new.

My husband and I enjoyed a night on the back patio while reading through this book together. The sky-filled pages are so cool! I loved being able to spend a little date-night activity watching the stars and getting a guide to reading the sky. We learned not only things about the stars but a bit of history (like how people used the Polaris to tell which way was north!). Such a fun book for all ages, and easy size to pack anywhere especially if you’re camping! We’d love to take this to southern utah.

This book is an amazing way to actually learn about stars and constellations! We read it on the deck of our sailboat at night with our boys while gazing up at the sky, and have learn something new every time. It should be part of every family’s home library.

My hope for reading Stikky Night Skies was that it’d give my homeschooled daughter a beautiful overview of the night sky that we see each night. This book went completely above and beyond my expectations with its incredible lessons, stunning imagery, and easy-to-grasp information. We had so much fun reading together, and we both finished the book with so much excitement about what we just learned. I would highly recommend reading Stikky Night Skies to anyone who even has the slightest interest in the stars and planets that surround us. It was so incredibly fascinating to read through this book, and I really appreciated how it was written in a way that wasn’t overwhelming with too much consistent information. It was fun and easy to absorb, which is why it kept our attention throughout. Highly recommend!

Wow! I’ve always been interested in the night sky and trying to identify stars but I have never been good at it. Most night sky books show you what to look for but not the how. This book not only shows you what to look for, it shows you the how!!
This is an amazing step-by-step book on spotting constellations and planets, we’ve never seen another book written like this. If you take the book seriously and practice at night you too can become someone who can point out constellations and planets.
This book is written in three sequences, it is written simply (so even a child can learn to find constellations), and actually works. If you’re looking for a fun and effective way to spot constellations and planets in the night sky, we recommend this book!

I really loved this book. I've always been in awe, just looking up at the stars at night, always wondering about different constellations but never really taking the time to learn about. Which is why this book is so great! In just one hour, this book will teach you how to identify different constellations, stars, a planet, and a galaxy! Now when I'm camping with friends and family, I can point out Orion's Belt, The Big Dipper, Betelgeuse, Polaris, and more. Very easy to read and learn with Stikky books!

Really cool concept: these books make the knowledge "stick" in your brain! There are illustrations on every page, and the information is broken-down into bite-size pieces (no long paragraphs!)... followed by tiny little quizzes to see if the information is sticking! You'll learn - with tiny bits of information, page by page, how to locate the Big Dipper and then Polaris, which helps you locate which way is North. Then you'll see all of the stars in the sky and test yourself - can you actually do it? Same with 6 constellations, 3 other stars, a planet, and a galaxy. A fun book for both adults and children.

This book makes learning FUN! Great for kids and adults! I wondered about the titles, and now I understand. The idea is that each piece of information builds on the last, so it all STICKS! It works!! I really enjoyed the fun way my new knowledge was tested. I feel confident to now test that knowledge with the night sky. It’s so cool that I’m learning what the ancients knew in order to navigate at night. Great for stargazers, hikers, campers, and outdoors enthusiasts of all kinds! Great for individuals and families!

From the format to the material the book is made out of, these are SO well designed and thoughtfully created. Easy to pop in a backpack when you're outside with your kids camping or adventuring, and they won't easily bend or get trashed. One of my children is super into space, but after going through this book as a family, now all three of them are loving the night sky!

I was pleasantly surprised by this book! I loved the compact size and the way it was laid. I learned all the things it promised and loved the act of reading this book. It was fun and easily digestible. The best part is the inspiration I felt to go out and practice what I learned outside with the real night sky. I've been outside a few evenings in a row to look up and practice what I learned. I took the book camping and practiced when I camping as well with no city lights pollution! I saw the Milky Way and identified the planets and constellations that were visible during this time of year. I even taught my kids and husband about what I learned! I'm dying for more titles and I hope there are many more to come! This would make a wonderful gift for a teacher or a nature enthusiast and can be re-read again and again to solidify the learning! Amazing job Stikky Books! I love this concept of learning something new in 1 hour!

It's a great little book to help identify and learn constellations, etc. There's pages for learning and then pages to practice what you've learned. We keep ours in the adventure van for quick reference and so kids have something to constructive to do on road trips.

This book is so quick and easy to follow, and you really do learn how to navigate the night sky when you're finished reading it. A great pocket guide for anyone who enjoys the outdoors, Scout leader, curious child, or anyone eager to learn a new skill.

I'm excited to apply what I've learned and read stikky skies with my son. This will also be a great add-on to Cub Scout den meetings. It's such a fun little book.

This book was fantastic! My kids (9 &11) were excited to read it as soon as it came in the mail and we all enjoyed learning about the night sky. The information is presented in bite sized pieces that make learning fun! Through a series of easy to remember mini lessons and practice questions, we were able to quickly learn to identify different constellation and more. We had fun looking up into the night sky together and being able to recognize the constellations we learned from the book!

This book was fun to introduce the concept of constellations with our forest school students. Although we run school during the day, the book inspired many to take a second look at the night sky with parents. We also created constellation art inspired by many of the visuals found in the book.
