An introduction to Ecological Economics co-written by Robert Costanza, John H. Cumberland, Herman Daly, Robert Goodland and Richard B Norgaard addresses the importance for the scale of economy to articulate the scale of ecology. As the population is expanding accompanied with an increasing and uncontrollable human activity, this led to three very important crises: 1) climatic/environmental crisis; 2) biodiversity degradation; 3) and ecosystem degradation. Analysing various variables borrowed from ecological studies — habitat loss, biodiversity, species, and other ecosystem — that the authors confront with economic, engineering and energy studies, the main thesis of this book is to define an ecological economics as "an attempt to transcend the narrow disciplinary boundaries that have grown up in the last 90 years in order to bring the full power of our intellectual capital to bear on the huge problems we now face." Put it simply, it is an urgent task for the man-made system (or anthropogenic-based system) to take these three articulated crises into account to problem-form indescribable externalities.

A notion that may be appropriate to understanding this book is the concept of contingency — not the philosophical meaning of contingency — as the future is uncertain, unpredictable. It is certain that contingency will be becoming crucial as key concept, as instrument to cope with uncertainty. But the book does not go further than the simple introduction to ecological economics. Do not ask it more. However this is an introduction, this is provide an overview on this vast but fascinating field.

Note that I am not an economist. In this respect, my read was more directed by the architectural scope. Indeed, the scale of the economy is as guilty as the scale of architecture and both must understand that our growing demand will be facing with scarcity — note that guilt is becoming an oxymoron to describe anthropogenic responsibility to environmental damages, to failures. How to do with a world in which the material scale of human system exceed the environmental carrying capacity to the earth? Or, to borrow one of the numerous questions the book asks, can we recognize these fundamental changes and recognize our society rapidly enough to avoid a catastrophic overshoot?

This book is limited to neither the reader familiar with the economic studies nor the reader of the political studies. Nor is it limited to the reader of ecological studies. Landscape/Architects, designers, engineers who are also confronted to these questions of scarcity — natural resource shortage, materials shortage — as well as population growth, landscape degradation, housing shortage, urbanization — and the list can continue, will find in this book key approaches to building, to city-shaping. The book is not difficult to read for the non-economist. It avoids the common economic jargons that regularly make these economy books cold, if not abstruse.

This book should be in each landscape/architect, engineer, designer's bookshelf.

Κατά βάσει αν ήταν ένα βιβλίο για πρωτοετής οικονομολόγους θα ήταν καλό ή μάλλον ικανοποιητικό. Όμως είναι ένα βιβλίο γραμμένο για προπτυχιακά και μεταπτυχιακά μαθήματα (εισαγωγικά στα οικολογικά οικονομικά), όπως δηλώνουν οι συγγραφείς στον πρόλογο. Συνεπώς ο δηλωμένος στόχος των συγγραφέων είναι να αποτελέσει ένα συγκροτιτικό εγχειρίδιο για την επόμενη γενιά οικολόγων οικονομολόγων. Και σε αυτό είναι καταστρεπτικό!

Ουσιαστικά αντί να συγκροτήσει μια νέα γενιά, το κείμενο περισσότερο φαίνεται να προσπαθεί να ανοιχτεί στο οικονομικό φοιτητικό κοινό, να προσπαθεί να πείσει πως τα οικολογικά οικονομικά είναι κάτι ενδιαφέρον (και ως εκεί), και κάτι όχι και τόσο διαφορετικό από αυτά που διδάσκονται τα υπόλοιπα μαθήματα.
Το αποτέλεσμα είναι να καταλήγει να είναι σχεδόν ένα εγχειρίδιο νεοκλασικών, να λέει συνεχώς πως τα οικολογικά οικονομικά και τα νεοκλασικά δεν έχουν μεγάλες διαφορές. Και να ξεχνάει παντελώς να κάνει την οποιαδήποτε ουσιώδη κριτική στην κυρίαρχη οικονομική σκέψη. Εν συντομία, είναι ένα προβληματικό βιβλίο το οποίο οδηγεί σε μια ξεδοντιασμένη επόμενη γενιά οικολόγων οικονομολόγων, οι οποίοι υποβιβάζουν τα μεθοδολογικά επίπεδα πρόσληψής τους σε αυτά των νεοκλασικών όπως και τα εργαλεία τους.

Κατά τα άλλα έχει σοβαρές επιστημονικές αδυναμίες, τις οποίες πραγματικά απορώ πως αποδέχτηκαν οι συγγραφείς που είναι βασικοί συντελεστές, και καινοτόμοι επιστήμονες της σχολής των οικολογικών οικονομικών. Η μόνη απάντηση που μπορώ να φανταστώ, ότι ήθελαν ένα εύπεπτο βιβλίο, το οποίο να είναι ιδιαίτερα προσφιλές σε ένα οικονομικό κοινό εκπαιδευμένο στα πλαίσια της σύγχρονης οικονομικής ορθοδοξίας. Το κείμενο βρίθει επαναλήψεων και κοινοτοπιών, αποτελεί μια ιδιαίτερα αβαθή κριτική στην κυρίαρχη σκέψη, έχει λογικές και μεθοδολογικές αντιφάσεις, πέραν των πιο δύσκολων μεθοδολογικών ζητημάτων τα οποίες επιλέγει να προσπερνά και να συσκοτίζει, μπορεί να λέει σε δυο σημεία πράγματα που αλληλοαναιρούνται. Εν συντομία αδυνατεί να περιγράψει μια συνεκτική εναλλακτική, και να επιτύχει τον στόχο του: να συγκροτήσει μια επόμενη γενιά (οικολόγων) οικονομολόγων οι οποίοι θα μπορούν να μελετήσουν επισταμένα και σε βάθος το θέμα που τους αφορά, αλλά και να γνωρίζουν τα μεθοδολογικά όρια της οικονομικής ορθοδοξίας.

Κλείνοντας, δε θα το πρότεινα ποτέ σε κάποιον προσεκτικό αναγνώστη, και ως σύγγραμα νομίζω θα έκανε μόνο σε προπτυχιακό επίπεδο ενός τριτο-δεύτερου μαθήματος εισαγωγής σε θέματα περιβάλλοντος (και όχι στα οικολογικά οικονομικά).
