Hopefully, our lives are lived without any hint of misfortune or regret, but some folks seem to have the terrors of the world camp out on their doorstep. They’re the ones who appear to be CURSED. In the new book CURSED, the bestselling author of DREAD and CREEP takes a disturbing look at when people find themselves pushed to the brink of madness. The moments when reality disappears and the dark forces of the world conspire to reign down horror after horror. After reading CURSED you’ll look at your life with a new sense of relief.
Kevin Bachar is an EMMY award-winning National Geographic writer/cinematographer/director who’s swum with sharks, climbed the peaks of mountains, and explored the darkest of forests. In CURSED, he brings us face to face with the terrors of our lives when things spiral into the realm of horror.
Kevin Bachar is a national EMMY award-winning natural history documentary filmmaker and WGA writer. The elevated horror film he wrote - The Inhabitant - https://www.lionsgate.com/movies/the-...? - was released through Lionsgate and is available on most streaming services.
If you’ve watched National Geographic, PBS, or The Discovery Channel over the years you’ve seen his work. He’s the idiot in the water filming sharks or crawling into caves to photograph vampire bats. You can see Kevin at work filming sharks here - https://www.imdb.com/video/vi2703407897/...
The natural world has always captured his imagination and the supernatural world inspires his stories. Through his journeys, he’s interviewed scientists who’ve enlightened him, heard folk tales that have frightened him, and seen quite a few things that have challenged his skeptical mind.
His collection of short stories that weaves together the natural world and the supernatural world entitled, DREAD, is available on Amazon. He's currently working on his second collection entitled - CREEP.
This is the third collection of short horror stories I've read from this author and I'm always surprised at just how good he tells a story.
In this one, you'll find all manner of creepy, terrifying, dark themes presented and some of them are surprisingly touching. Seriously. Although most of them provide no happy ending, there are a few that, al least, could be called bittersweet.
But, really, it's the author's style that really makes this an enjoyable anthology. He has a way of writing that makes you feel as if you're just sitting down having a talk and telling spooky stories. It makes the experience feel more personal and it really makes you want to read more than one.
As an award winning nature documentarian he also spins some of these tales from his experience from around the world, in the field, with nature at it's finest and its most brutal.
This is another fantastic collection that I highly recommend you pick up.
I received an ARC of this book from the author with no consideration. This review is voluntary and is my own personal opinion.
One of my favorite parts of reading Bachar’s work is how he sprinkles some of his real life experiences into his fiction. Bachar is an EMMY-winning producer, director, WGA writer, and cinematographer. Of course, my favorite bio tidbit is that he’s worked on Shark Week, so that’s an instant win for me! That being said, he’s had life experiences some of us can only dream of, and having those adrenaline-inducing moments in some of his stories truly brings them to life. I caught myself wondering how much of the stories were truth and how much were fiction, which is a fantastic experience when reading horror. That being said, “The Presence” fits the bill nicely as an example.
Another thing I enjoyed about Cursed is how Bachar transforms the mundane into something absolutely terrifying in each situation. The routine events in these stories could be everyday lives unfolding, but Bachar takes it up a notch and sends the characters’ lives onto new and horrifying paths. It makes you stop and wonder what could happen in your day when you least expect it.
Great Read! Typically with short stories, I really like a few and some are so so. I loved all of the stories in Cursed. Some were straight up terrifying, some were sweet and some made me laugh.
Here’s a few of my favorites:
The Junkyard had a serial killer, haunted cars and some sweet revenge. I’ve always been leery of that car crushing, cube making machine in junkyards.
Circling had big cats. So of course I loved it. I’m the person who devours all the nature documentaries, so I loved seeing this tale of the unlikely apex predator.
Messages made me think twice about using a hotel phone (who actually uses them anymore) Theresa just needed to pull over for some rest but instead walked right into some crazy drama. And the mirrors. I will never stay in a hotel room covered in mirrors.
With collections some of the stories I like some are so so. With cursed I enjoyed all of them. Kevin weaves a web of words that creep into you and has you checking the shadows for things waiting to attack you. The junk yard story was my favorite yet each one is excellent.
This is one collection you really need to pick up and enjoy
I am a horror story junky and this book is truly extraordinary. All stories were original n not just the same old retelling. A few even brought tears to my eyes or caused me to sleep with the lights on. Give it a try you won’t be disappointed if you love good old fashion scary stories.
These stories are both haunting and encouraging at the same time. Don’t ask me how it was achieved but by some stroke of luck they found me when I most needed them. 10/10 would DEFINITELY RECOMMEND!!
What a writer. Gripping, imaginative, original stories that never fail to absorb me completely. Well written and uniquely different each one. This author is a master of the horror and suspense genre. Keep writing Sir. Please.
