"I’ll wait as long as it takes, because you’re worth waiting for."
What a way to end this series! Sutton and Flynn—and Melissa Foster—got me in love with love all over again. I’m going to miss this family so, so much (even if I know Melissa will bring them back somehow!)
"Were you born a dick, or did it take years of practice?"
Flynn… Come on! Everyone knows I’m a fan of the grumpy guys. And of banter. So it’s safe to assume he won me over right off the bat, but then he kept going: his honesty, loyalty, the size of his heart, the way his actions speak so much louder than his words… I love him.
"She had a way of getting under his skin and causing him to forget a hell of a lot more than his manners."
Sutton was flawless. She felt so real in her drive, in her pursuit of her dreams and what she wants—and also when she wouldn’t take Flynn’s shit. The way she gives as good as she gets made me fall in love with her too—and want to be her.
"The show is now focusing on the two of you surviving three nights—seventy-two hours—in the Amazon rainforest."
Sutton and Flynn work together—technically, he’s her boss. They don’t get along at all, and Sutton knows Flynn wants to get her fired. So how do you think she feels about spending a few days with him all alone in the Amazonian rainforest? Yeah, not good. And when they find out there’s only one tent? Yep, it’s a recipe for disaster.
Or is it?
"Know what’s not fun? Being hungry, thirsty, and wet and thinking you’re going to get wood so we can get more comfortable. But I’m still wet, and you have no wood."
The way they squabbled made me laugh. The way they’re at each other’s throats and somehow turn things into innuendo was very much all them. And you start to realize that this so-called "hatred" is more like two people attracted to each other who know they shouldn’t be but can’t stop themselves.
"Or maybe it was because there in the darkness, it felt like they were the last two people on earth,"
It’s in the Amazon rainforest that they give in and let it happen. Don’t get me wrong, it was hot (and I don’t mean the weather!) and so very unique given their surroundings, but what got to me was the way they opened up—without meaning to—to each other, giving each other something that went way beyond physical.
And unlike what they thought, what happens in the forest doesn't always stay there.
"God, I’ve missed you."
"You see me every day."
"No, babe. I see you every day through the veil of pretending not to really see you."
Their little bubble bursts when their time there is over and they need to come back to reality. To having to pretend to be at each other’s throats again when that’s now how it feels anymore—if ever. Flynn won my heart even more because we know he’s head over heels with this girl. If only things were different…
"I’m done following the rules. You’re coming home with me."
You know it won’t take long until they break. The way they circle each other, the stares, the text messages, the phone calls… Pretending only gets you so far. And you know these two were meant to be even when they were bickering.
"You will never have to compete for my attention or worry that I don’t think you’re the most incredible woman alive. Because to me there’s only you."
I love that Melissa doesn’t really write third-act breakups or adds drama for the sake of it. I love how it’s all real and something that could easily happen to someone you know. But something happens that will force them to come out with their feelings for each other—and I loved every second of it.
"I knew you before you were mine, Steele, and I hope I’ll never know a time when you’re not."
You’ll see the whole Steele family, and that made me tear up. These characters have become part of me, like a real family. And there are so many beautiful and meaningful moments (as someone who cares about those little things that make a book memorable, don’t even get me started!) when you catch up with all your favorite couples. Before you ask, yes, there are also the usual pranks—and let me tell you, these were FUN!
"You’re it for me, baby. The sun and the moon and the stars all pale in comparison to you."
I can’t forget to mention how hot these two were together. From waterfalls and a tent to a bed, they’re absolutely perfect. And Melissa knows how to add steam that means something—mixed up with real feelings and between people who care about each other and show with their bodies just how much. It’s always intimate. It always makes me want to be the FMC. I’m not kidding!
"You are my love, my life. You are my heart story, baby. The only one that matters,"
Flynn and Sutton were passion and adventure brought to life, but they were also love—the kind of love who is there for you and pushes you to be the best version of yourself. The kind that shows you what really matters in life and what happily ever after can be like.
