I really wanted to love this… I enjoyed the other series by this author, but this book was just unreadable for me.

This is an ARC, so I can only hope that some things were corrected before publication. Unfortunately, the number of historical inaccuracies was distracting. First, Rosalind was a duke’s daughter, so her title would be Lady Rosalind, not Lady Dearling. Second, all the touching! A duchess kissing her husband on the cheek in public, a viscount clapping a duke’s heir on the back even though they don’t know each other, people going in for spontaneous hugs when they barely know each other… ehhh…

Unfortunately, the romance doesn’t work for me either, and this book is boring me out of my mind, so I’m calling it quits at 52%.

Thanks to Booksirens and the author for the arc, all opinions are my own.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. This is the first book in the Ladies of Accomplishment Series and can be read as a standalone, though An Elopement Gone Awry is the prequel that I would recommend reading if you enjoy this book. The book's blurb is straightforward. A Painting for the Viscount is told though Henry and Rosalind's third person pov and is a great fake engagement regency romance.

While this story is full of sweet and funny moments, it also deals with heavier topics, such as debt . However, it's approached in a way where, though you can feel what the characters are experiencing as they face certain situations or memories, the overall tone of the story will not drag you down emotionally.

Rosalind is content with living life painting and with no thoughts about marriage. However, since her position and family demands it, she knows a marriage of convenience is the best solution for her and decides to become fake engaged with Henry. With five sisters to care for and lack of funds, marriage would solve all of Henry's problems so he doesn't hesitate to agree to enter a fake engagement with Rosalind. Like her, romance wasn't something that he was necessarily in search of yet they both believe they can at least form a friendship.

Because of their feelings about marriage, their romance was a slow burn but their friendship was a fast burn. Their not so meet cute made them vulnerable with each other and allowed them to form a fast bond, especially once they decided that an engagement could benefit them both. I liked seeing them become friends and respect each other for who they were. From the start, they had chemistry and I liked seeing that grow the more time they spent together. The romance was a clean one consisting of kissing that wasn't overly detailed or steamy and no curse words were used. As I mentioned before, the story deals with some heavy topics and I liked the depth and mystery it added to the story. Something else that I enjoyed was the dynamics of Henry and his sisters. They have all their personalities that will make you want to know more about them. I liked the siblings' relationship and how they embraced Rosalind. This was a great first book in the series and I look forward to continuing it and reading the Thornton sisters find their own love matches.

This is the first book in the Ladies of Accomplishment series, and it is a great start. Henry Thornton has inherited the title Viscount and the responsibility for his five younger sisters after his parents’ death in a carriage accident. He’s also inherited his father’s massive debts that he can’t pay. Unless he gets a miracle and fast, he’s going to debtor’s prison, and his sisters will be turned out of their home.

Rosalind Dearling is a spinster with money to spare. A gifted painter, she has no desire to get married. Her father, though, has other plans. He’s given her to the end of the season to get married or there will be consequences. You’d think that a beautiful, incredibly wealthy girl would have to beat suitors off with a stick, but to the ton, she’s an odd duck, and the fellows just aren’t interested.

When she finds out Henry’s drowning in debt, she comes up with a plan. They’ll get married, he’ll have his debts paid off, and she can paint to her heart’s content. He’s amenable to the plan (anything to save his sisters). Besides, they like each other and are becoming friends, so this should be easy.

Of course, nothing ever goes to plan. Her parents don’t like him because they think he’s a gold digger (which he is) and keep pushing back on the marriage. The debtors are closing in, and time is running out. There’s also a big secret that could end their friendship and break both of their hearts.

This book is wonderful. Henry and Rosalind are sweet, relatable and wonderfully human. The supporting cast, especially his sisters, is fun. And the romance is beautiful and heartwarming. The only dig I have (and it’s a very, very minor one) is that there are some things in the book that are historically inaccurate. The biggest one is his sisters wanting to buy ink to send letters to their beaux. Anyone who’s ever read Sense and Sensibility knows what a bad idea that is!! Only engaged women were allowed to write to their fellows in that era. Other than that, it’s one of the best romances of any kind I’ve read in a long time.

A Painting for the Viscount by Sariah Drake is a slow burn love story, with a mysterious secret lurking beneath.

** I would like to express my thanks to ☆ Sariah Drake ☆ for providing me this ARC in exchange for an honest review **

This novel starts off on a lighthearted note, shopping for the London season, but yet with financial troubles looming on Henry. A mysterious wall flower who wants freedom with a marriage of a husband for Rosalind. It was lighthearted, sweet, and funny. Both Henry and Rosalind enter into a hasty engagement to fulfill what they need in terms of money and freedom. The characters started off on an amicable note as friends, and I really loved the slow burn. But there were whispers of rumors, there was a subtle atmosphere change at a certain point in the novel that made it feel of the novel not so lighthearted.

I thought that the characters were lovable, the sisters of Henry were supportive and cute. Henry was such a gentleman, paying attention to Rosalind’s interests and wants, joking with her, and having fun with her. While Rosalind was a sweet girl who was very practical, and had high standards. This book really hit the head on, “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover.” The family though at first had an icy exterior, later on in the story we were able to see the layers peel back. There was a surprising amount of depth in the story as well, the two characters connected in an unexpected way. There was also a darkness that the story took, that I didn’t expect for it to go to. Overall, I thought that the book was well-researched, very nice read, many twists and turns, unexpected secrets, and a good reconciliation.

I recommend this novel to anyone who wants a good historical romance read, and a marriage of convenience trope.

Oh, what a delicious, luscious book! Sariah Drake is fast becoming one of my favorite Regency authors. Where to start? Lord Henry Thornton is desperately trying to avoid debtor’s prison from the mess his deceased parents have left and he has to try to find husbands for five sisters!
When he accidentally pours ink all over the beautiful and odd daughter of a Duke, his fortunes begin to change.

Lady Rosalind Dearling is an artist and has no interest in finding a husband, despite her parents’ concern. She would rather be painting perfect miniatures than fluffing around a ballroom. But when Henry’s precocious sisters ask her to teach them to draw, she soon finds herself enjoying the family and catching the eye of Henry. To keep her parents at bay, and to help Henry financially, she horrifyingly and embarrassingly proposes marriage to him. When he agrees to a sham marriage, the only problem is somehow getting her father on board before Henry’s financial woes are exposed to the Ton.

Sariah has penned a wonderfully fresh story as she brings the couple together. Her lush writing and powerful descriptions of the artistic temperament drive the story and characters through some fascinating twists and turns to get them to their HEA. All this is done with a modern feel even though she holds very carefully to all the Regency-isms. The plight of women artists – or women, period, during that time, is a tricky road to maneuver and Sariah does it magnificently. It was a fun and romantic read and I can’t wait to read more in this series.

I received a free advance reader copy and I am providing my honest opinion.

Title : “A Painting for the Viscount”
Author: #SariahDrake
August 23, 2024

Sariah Drake delivers a delightful Regency romance with A Painting for the Viscount book 1 in Ladies of Accomplishment series. The story follows Henry Thornton, a financially strapped viscount, and Lady Rosalind Dearling, an aspiring artist, as they navigate the complexities of a sham engagement. We previously met these characters in the prequel, An Engagement Gone Awry, which adds an extra layer of enjoyment for those familiar with their earlier story. What starts as a practical arrangement blossoms into a genuine connection, fueled by witty banter and tender moments that make their growing affection both believable and engaging.

The author’s portrayal of Rosalind’s artistic ambitions adds depth to the narrative, highlighting the challenges faced by women pursuing their passions in a male-dominated society. The novel’s charm lies in its balance of lighthearted romance and the emotional depth of its characters. Henry’s devotion to his sisters and Rosalind’s struggle of societal expectations create a compelling backdrop for their love story. The plot is driven by well-paced tension and a touch of mystery, with the revelation of a dark secret adding an unexpected twist.

While some aspects of the story are predictable, the chemistry between the leads and their journey toward true love make A Painting for the Viscount a thoroughly enjoyable read for fans of clean, wholesome Regency romances.

What an enjoyable read! "A Painting for the Viscount" is not your typical "fake marriage" Regency romance. A viscount with 5 sisters to support and find husbands for, Lord Henry Thornton, Viscount of Notting Grove had his hands full. Added to that was the mounting debt and going to Debtor's Prison in his foreseeable future unless he could find a solution. Hoping to sell an expensive painting his father had bought, he's disheartened to find out it's a fake.
Lady Rosalind Dearling is the daughter of the Duke of Templeton. She's a gifted painter, and her dowry is one of the highest in all of Britain. Unfortunately, her parents don't support her artwork and she feels misunderstood.
Henry's sisters are excited and inspired to learn to draw, and Rosalind volunteers as their teacher. Henry is quite taken with Rosalind, and soon after she proposes a sham marriage so that she can pursue her artwork with freedom and he can gain her dowry to pay off his debt.
With mystery, secrets, opposition by family and the ton, can their engagement and growing love survive? Both Henry's and Rosalind's characters were written with warmth and tenderness as they battled the drama of their engagement. Henry's sisters became mature young women as their circumstances changed. I loved how they all cared for and supported each other.
I thoroughly loved "A Painting for the Viscount" and highly recommend this clean Regency romance with a HEA. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Lord Henry Thornton, Viscount of Notting Grove - his current "to do" list includes keeping himself out of debtor's prison after the mess left by his deceased parents and finding husbands for his five unmarried younger sisters! No pressure here!!

To alleviate the financial burden, he plans to sell a valuable painting his father purchased, only to find out that it is a fake - back to square one!

Lady Rosalind Dearling, the daughter of the Duke of Templeton has an interest in painting miniatures instead of faffing around looking for a potential husband, much to the dismay of her parents. Her parents do not support or understand her artwork and she feels misunderstood.

When Henry accidentally pours ink all over Rosalind, his fortunes begin to change. His sisters, keen to learn to draw, ask Rosalind to teach them and this endears them to her and has her spending time with the family and enjoying their company, which in turn makes her more desirable to Henry.

When she comes to know of Henry's financial difficulties, she proposes a marriage of convenience between the two. They grow to love each other, and their marriage develops into a love relationship.

I really like that both MCs are very much selfless in putting their loved ones before their own self-interests and thus making them an ideal match IMO.

5 STARS , REGENCY HISTORICAL CONTEXT

5 STARS to a new writer for me, first time reading Sariah Drake. She wrote a very interesting & entertaining storyline for Book 1 of her wonderful new Series: Ladies of Accomplishment. A good BLURB is provided. Good characters, with a fear of what a case of nerves would have been like & reacted to.

Just stop a few minutes to consider some of the symptoms. How could people even understand bipolar manic episode back then, or just a heightened sense of excitement for your muse if a painter to just paint for hours, forgetting to eat & fighting sleep by consuming Tea & Coffee by the pot fulls. Then a Doctor comes because your parents really don't understand and have him sent for. Nerves, 2 or 3 weeks with around the clock laudunum given plus watched & the Doctor will check regularly & when she is sufficiently rested & recooperated from the episode he will detox the dosage of the medicine. If it doesn't help reluctantly there is always the sanatarium if absolutely necessary. However, he doesn't see that at this time.

What a scary time to have lived through if you had to hide any problems we know now are normal in the world.

I loved reading about how the Thornton sisters seem to be naturally musically inclined & Henry played a mean Spanish Guitar, at times. The characters in this series are worth getting to know, I think. Why don't you check out this one, Book 1 yourself & see if you agree about the book.

This is the first book of The Ladies of Accomplishment series.
Henry is in desperate need of money. He struggles not only for himself, but for the well-being of his five sisters as well, and is in desperate need of a wealthy wife. Rosalind, on the other hand, is a heroine who defies societal norms with her ambition to pursue a career as a miniature painter, challenging the constraints of her time. She has no desire to marry, but her father thinks otherwise. In order to appease him, she needs a marriage of convenience.

Henry and Rosalind are an enchanting pair whose seemingly disparate lives converge in a tale of mutual necessity and undeniable chemistry. The story’s premise—a sham marriage born out of desperation—unfolds with equal parts wit and emotional depth. Henry and Rosalind’s growing friendship and eventual romantic connection are beautifully developed, bringing forth a romance that feels both authentic and deeply satisfying.

In summary, this is a delightful story with a slow-burn romance that blends the charm of a historical setting with the timeless struggles of love, independence, and self-discovery.

Lessons in art and love

With five unmarried sisters in the household, Henry Thornton is under financial stress since the death of his parents. The situation is so dire that if not rectified, he may end up in debtors prison. While out shopping with his sisters, Henry accidentally bumped into the daughter of a duke, Rosalind Dearling, with a red inkwell in hand. The contents splashed onto them both, the broke Viscount and the miniature portraitist. They would meet again at a ball.

The author regales us with a delightful romance between an honorable desperate young man and a troubled young artist from a protective wealthy family. We are led into a world of the ton’s marriage mart and prejudicial scrutiny, familial obligations, marriages without love, and we get a glimpse of what it is like for a woman artist. The plot is strong and inviting as are the main characters. There are two mysteries to be solved and to add further interest to the novel. I cannot offer enough adjectives to describe how pleasurable this clean Regency romance is.

My first impression
I didn't realize this was the book I had started reading a few months ago, but I gave up on it early. The story had a slow beginning. Add to that a scene where the Thornton girls and their visitor barged into their brother's office while he was inside- to paint. I couldn’t understand why they would choose to paint in a space where he conducts business. Is there nowhere else in that home more suitable? I stopped reading because I didn't want to take a chance on the rest of the book.

Second impression
I just finished reading "A Sonata for the Rake." It's a stand-alone in a series. Since I gave it 4 stars, I decided to read book one, not knowing it was the same book as my first impression. Once I realized it, I skipped past the first reading, believing it would improve based on book two.

Overall, it is a good read, and I'm glad I gave it another chance. I will not hesitate to read the third book as well. There's a bit of drama, but it's mostly an easy read.

I truly enjoyed reading this delectable sweet romance! The characters and family dynamics were realistic and true-to-life—and therefore highly entertaining. I found myself laughing out loud several times. But in no way would I categorize this as rom-com. The plot, storyline and characters had a depth that captured my imagination and kept me guessing what would happen next. And I Absolutely loved the suspense woven into the storyline!

The hero, Henry was such a sweetheart and a gentleman and so easy to fall in love with! It’s no wonder that what started as a proposed marriage of convenience, ignited to much more than that before the wedding even took place.

One of the swooniest lines is when Henry asks Rosalind, “Must our marriage be merely for appearances, or is there a chance for something more genuine between us?” Aaaahhhhh!

This author is quickly winning a place in my heart with her characters and stories . Oh , this was a good one too! The weight of the world is on Henry's shoulders, plus his 5 sisters who need dowries. I empathized with Henry. He had integrity and was a good man, but how was he to get out from under the debts his father left the 6 with?? Enter Rosalind a beautiful talented rich artist with pressure from her father to marry, and soon.

The perfect storm was about to be unleashed!!! I liked that Rosalind fit well with Henry and his sisters. They bonded quickly and it felt like old friends once the 5 sisters got involved. Then possible disaster strikes for all of them. What twists and

turns, but they led to an hea for this captivating couple in the end! I was on the edge of my seat wondering how it was all going to come together. A great suspenseful romance. I voluntarily read a free copy of this book provided by book sirens and am giving an honest opinion.

A Painting for the Viscount Is a lovely historical romance. It is clean and wholesome with some kissing scenes and no foul language. The main characters start off on the wrong foot, but quickly become entwined. When Rosalind sees a way out of her father’s manipulative hand, she jumps at the chance to earn her freedom. Henry has found himself in dire straits, due to his father’s bad investments, he has creditors breathing down his neck.
I really enjoyed the storyline of this book. I thought it was entertaining and intriguing. The twist and turns kept you on your toes. The characters were charming, and the chemistry between them was perfect, even when they disagreed. There was one part I thought was a little choppy with Rosalind‘s illness. And I think the conflict with Rosalind and Mr. Seabright could’ve been a little more in depth. But overall, it was a good fast paced read. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

This was the story of Henry and Rosalind. Due to his late father's bad financial decisions, Henry and his sisters were on the verge of ruin. Rosalind, a wealthy duke's daughter, needed to find a convenient husband. When she finds out that Henry is at risk of going to debtor's prison, she offers to save him by way of marriage. Over time, they begin to realize that the feelings they have for each other are real. Unfortunately, a few secrets from Rosalind's past might keep them away from the altar.

This book was entertaining but it did leave me with some unanswered questions. Rosalind's state of mind and her actions were not explained to my satisfaction and I don't know if the author wrote an afterword. Nevertheless, the story had a happy ending and it was well worth reading.

I received a free ARC from BookSirens and this is my honest opinion.

This is the first time I’ve read anything written by this author. I was captivated by this book from the very first chapter. I really loved Henry and how he did so much for his sisters, even though he knew they were drowning in debt. I enjoyed the chemistry between Henry and Rosalind. They started out as friends who really started to care about each other, but neither was willing to admit it. There are events that happen which bring them together, but then other misjudgments that tear them apart . I don’t want to say too much, but I totally recommend that you read this book. I’m looking forward to reading the next few books that she’s written in this series . If you like regency romance that is wholesome then you will enjoy this book.

I did not finish the book. While I tried to ignore what seems to me (although I am no expert) the historical inaccuracies, like the lack of chaperones. There were things in the writing itself that I felt could be improved upon. The vomit scene for example was passed off as a romantic one, but that did not quite make sense because removing vomit from someone’s face is not romantic. And a vomit stained hanker chief a cannot be reasonably considered a token even if a suitor gave it to you since you were in dire need. The whole scene felt forced.

Things that I did enjoy were the mischievous sisters and the little of about Rosalyn’s story I got to know about her being an artist and not being taken seriously and having to marry to please her parents. The plot is a good one but the execution could be improved.

Thank you to BookSirens for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This slow burn romance was thoroughly enjoyable. I liked the characters of Rosalind and Henry quite a lot, each with their own foibles… Henry with his massive debt and Rosalind with her secrets. 🤐 These sorts of books always make me wonder how many women in bygone eras ever really tried to break free of social conventions because they were somehow just a little different.

The characters were well written and I felt sympathy for both of them. The one thing that seemed a little sudden and a tad not believable was the turnabout in attitude of the Duke. But otherwise, a good read that I didn’t want to put down.

Honestly, I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this book. It seemed to start off rather slow to me. The plot seemed to race ahead with the love story but be rather slow with everything else. I was pleasantly surprised when there was a turn in the story and all the build up started making sense. Overall, I did like this story and look forward to reading more by this author. This is the third or fourth book I have read by this author, and I enjoy the polished writing style and skilled unfolding of plot developments in this series. I loved Henry in the previous book in this series, what a man with so many sisters to look after. I’m glad he got a happy ever after, with the bumps along the way. I found I was in tears with Rosalind at parts in the book. Again found this book hard to put down until I had finished it. Look forward to the next book in the series.

Unexpected love story. A sweet and clean regency romance about a gifted artist and a penniless Viscount. Rosalind has an artistic temperament as well as her amazing talent as a portrait painter. Henry unfortunately inherited an insolvent estate and struggles to stay out of debtor’s prison. Surprisingly, they meet accidentally but find a connection that blossoms. I enjoyed reading their story. I thank the author for an advance review copy and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

Enjoyable, but…

This book has potential. The characters are likable and charming, but without much backstory they’re a little hollow. The scenario is sweet, with the agreement that she would be allowed to continue to paint for pay, and her dowry would pay his debts. My major problem is how incredibly historically inaccurate it is. However, if that’s not something that bothers you, this is a thoroughly enjoyable read.

Clean lots of happenings

Great storyline with things going on rather than just he likes her she likes him. Usually not a fan of fake relationships but developed on both sides into more quickly. Got me in the feels. Great characters and appreciate it being clean but stuff going on with them and around them to keep it interesting.

I’ve always enjoyed a slow burn with fun twists and turns, and this was no exception. Sariah Drake takes the “Spinster being forced to marry/impoverished Viscount” trope in a fun direction. The slow burn is genuine and not forced. All in all, a clean fun read.

This book was amazing! It was definitely one of my favourite historical romance fiction books of the last few months! It had a great plot that was realistic and wasn't focused on the unrealistic idea that people in that time period could easily sleep around with everyone—it was clean! Which was so refreshing! It also had great, in-depth characters.
