One Liner: A heartwarming story of second chances

Maya is a pilot with the Whistlestop River Air Ambulance team. It was her childhood dream of becoming a pilot and working for an important cause. She finds satisfaction at her job even if her personal life is messy, no thanks to a controlling ex, a disapproving father, or a son stuck between two parents.

Noah had a great life in London until his world crashed with his sister’s death. He became the guardian of his niece, baby Eva, and has no idea how to be a parent. The shift to Dorset is his attempt to bring up a child while doing what he loves – being an emergency specialist paramedic.
Maya and Noah are on the same team. They seem to like each other a lot. But can they hope for a second chance at happiness with so much baggage weighing them down?

The story comes in the third-person POV of Maya and Noah.

My Thoughts:

I’ve been waiting to read the author’s book for a long time. Starting a new series seemed like a great idea.

While the cover is adorable and lighthearted, the book is a little heavy with many tough themes like a controlling ex, the loss of a sibling, new parental responsibilities, etc. Of course, some sweet and humorous moments provide some relief.

This is what we’d call women’s fiction with romance as a side plot. The focus is more on the characters and how they overcome the various issues in their lives. They are also flawed, which makes it easy to understand their fears, vulnerabilities, and decisions.

Most of the side characters are good; some are more memorable than others. Some of them will go on to have books of their own, so what we get here is enough for now. There are a couple of nasty ones as well.

The narration starts slowly but picks up pace after the first quarter. We need this time to settle into the story. The dual POV also helps see the situations on both sides. The connection between the characters is gradual, even if the attraction is a bit instant. This works well for the plot.

I loved the scenes detailing the air ambulance and how the teams operate. It was fascinating to read about it. The hardships and troubles are also shown, like negotiating bad weather conditions, fake emergency calls, lack of landing space, etc.

The storyline is predictable but it goes with the genre, so no complaints. Eva is a cutesy little doll (who can be super cranky too). Though she is just a baby, we cannot imagine the book without her. Can’t wait to see her grow up as the series progresses.

To summarize, Come Fly With Me is a lovely book about second chances, resilience, healing, moving on, and finding the strength to do the right thing. I’ll be reading more by the author for sure.

Thank you, NetGalley and Boldwood Books, for eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

I hadn't read Helen Rolfe before, but as soon as I saw the description I knew that this was a book that I wanted to read. I mean, I don't think I have ever read a book where the heroine is the pilot of a air ambulance helicopter in the countryside of England.

Maya loves her job as a helicopter pilot. What she doesn't love is that ex husband Conrad, still seems to have a hold over her, no matter how much she tells him that it is over. When he is injured in a motorcycle acccident, this is just one more opportunity to have Maya at his beck and call. She knows what he is doing but she feels as though she has to maintain the relationship in order to protect her son Isaac.

Noah has just moved into the town. His life was turned upside down when he found out that his recently deceased sister has appointed him as guardian of her daughter. Not only does he have to start a new job, he has to work out how to look after a baby. And being attracted to Maya is definitely not part of the plan.

This book has lots of layers and I really enjoyed it. I look forward to reading more from The Skylarks. The scene is set for a really interesting series.

As a big fan of Helen Rolfe books, I have been eagerly awaiting Come Fly With Me and it did not disappoint! Barely a chapter in and I was hooked and knew I’d love it.
Maya is an interesting character, she is the pilot of the air ambulance and has been through quite a already in life. She’s proud of her role within the service and how she plays a part in helping so many people. I didn’t know much about the air ambulance at all so even from this fictional story, I feel like I have more understanding of what happens and how they can be utilised.
We learn more about Maya’s relationship with her Dad and why it has become so strained. As the story progresses it is great to see some communication between characters that would hopefully mean changes in their relationship. Maya’s ex is also a character that seemed to have some hold over her, she does see sense but he is not a character to like at all.
Noah has just moved into the area after heartache of his own. His life has changed dramatically and he has a new normal to adjust too. He is struggling and when an opportunity presents itself to make things easier will he take it?
The relationship between Noah and Maya is interesting and one that helps both characters. They can support one another and whilst their chemistry is instant, I enjoyed how things developed between them.
Great characters, a very different location – the air ambulance – and Helen Rolfe’s wonderful writing style. A great read for romance fans.
A fantastic start to this new series, I shall look forward to the next!

Maya is a pilot for the local air ambulance, struggling with an ex-husband who won't accept that they have divorced. Noah is the new paramedic who is also bringing up his baby niece following the death of his sister. They are both attracted to each other, but can they overcome their difficulties to make it something more?
As an avid watcher of fly on the wall air ambulance series this gave me a good grounding of the work that they carry out, this book gives an insight on what (might be) the story with the crews themselves. It does mention the ups and downs of the missions themselves, however the story is more about personal relationships. I felt for both Maya and Noah, the dual viewpoint helping me understand both of them. Eva, Noah's niece, is a wonderful addition to the story, taking me back a long way to when our daughter was that age. Overall a story that I really enjoyed and can definitely recommend.
I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley, however this did not influence my review of the book.

From the very first moment I saw this on the authors page I knew I had to read it even without reading the outline so to get access to it early I was thrilled.

I love anything medical but I've never read anything with a air ambulance crew involved but I challenge you not to love The Skylarks. Book one in this will be fab series tells the story of Maya and Noah. Maya she's a girl who isn't scared of going after her dreams but with a jerk of a ex husband who the words emotional blackmailer seems to sum this jerk up.

Noah on the other hand world has been turned upside down. I loved how Noah changes and grows in this book and how he is a great dad to little Eva.

This is a new series I'll be keeping an eye out for additional books but also Helen has a brand new fan in me.

I have never read anything by Helen Rolfe before but I really enjoyed this book.
I was hooked from the first chapter, I loved the setting of the story and the details of the air ambulance call outs were really interesting and added to the story.
Maya is a pilot for the air ambulance and I found her a likeable character and i loved how her relationship with Noah progressed.
I enjoyed the majority of the characters in this book and how we began to see more of their back stories such as Mayas father and how Noah grew as a father.
The ending was perfect and this book was much more than just a bog standard romance book.
I can’t wait for the next book in the series.

I love this authors books and come fly with me is the first story in what is going to be a new series for this author and was such a fabulous read of love and loss family and resilience and second chances and takes the reader on an emotional roller coaster up into the skies and into the lives of the air ambulance crew and into the lives of maya and her team.

Loved how this book highlighted the important work the air ambulance and it’s staff do.

Maya is the helicopter pilot for the Whistlestop River Air Ambulance team. Noah is the newest member of the team. Maya is dealing with her ex husband and Noah has his sister’s daughter to care for.
It’s a story about family, loss and some surprises. It hints at a romance to come and all life has to offer.
It’s book one in a new series and I’m looking forward to reading the next one.

This was such a lovely book that I looked forward to reading in the evenings the past few days, it’s set in a gorgeous rural community with a lovely cast of characters (bar a couple - iykyk) and the ending leaves you with that warm and fuzzy feeling.

Maya and Noah are both so kind and genuine that you really want them to have a proper happy ending. I did want to knock a bit of sense into Maya for a while but I think this was a common feeling also shared by her friends, and ultimately some things are best left to work out yourself…

I can’t wait to read the next instalment in this series, Written in the Stars as I can just picture Whistlestop River at Christmas, it’s surely going to be magical! And I’m also guessing that we had a little clue towards the main characters for it so I’m quite excited to see how that unfolds!

Helen Rolfe is back with a new series and what a great introduction this is. For me Helen Rolfe is a must read author, I just love the adventures that I am whisked away on. Within the first chapter I knew that this was a book I was going to love. Helen has such a lovely writing style that really makes for a delightful read.

Whilst I wait for the next book in this series, why don't you give it a read?

What a terrific start to a new series! I’m already looking forward to the next instalment. Whistlestop River is a delightful setting, and I could envisage the patchwork fields and the breathtaking coastline each time the helicopter took to the skies. Of course, there was no way that a book by this author would be a boy meets girl easy read, and I’m here for each stretch of turbulence when it’s always handled so expertly.
Maya, our fearless female protagonist, is a beacon of strength. A helicopter pilot who bravely escaped a controlling husband, her journey is anything but light reading.
Noah could have stepped straight out of the cast of a glossy television series; he’d be an excellent addition to the faces on Grey’s Anatomy. Well, the guy I imagined would. His backstory is not without baggage, although it seems unreasonable to refer to Eva as baggage.
The zing of attraction between Maya and Noah was unmistakable, and it was intriguing to see how their friendship grew and evolved into a gorgeous connection. Of course, nothing ever runs smoothly, and they must overcome myriad issues before they can relax and enjoy each other’s company.
As usual, Helen has created some wonderful characters and developed them gently yet fully. This book is an absolute pleasure to read, and the storyline is exactly what I would expect from such a dramatic premise. Their stories are believable, and I could feel the rush when they took to the air for another rescue. It also highlighted the dangers related to fake calls.
I’m more than ready to read the next instalment.

There are quite a few layers in this first of a new series, called The Skylarks. There is plenty of interest and setting establishment around the Skylark's base. Central to the community, it is right at the centre of life. Maya is an interesting character who has issues from her childhood around her relationship with her father following the death of her mother when Maya was a child. Maya is facing an empty nest after her son Isacc's move away to university but there is plenty to fill her life. Her career as pilot to the Air Ambulance Service is central to her life. However, there is also the negative influence of Maya's ex-husband who seems to be ignoring the little matter of their divorce.
There are plenty of twists and turns in this story. Noah's arrival as the latest paramedic starts off on the wrong step but their friendship soon grows. Noah has moved to Dorset following the sudden death of his sister and the subsequent guardianship of his niece. Fatherhood is not straightforward. The mystery surrounding why Maya seems to be beholden to the ex-husband she dislikes runs through the story and ultimately reveals a lot about Maya and her past. Family relationships, friendships and community service are all at the heart of this story.
In short: New beginnings and strong friendships

Loved this book!!

When Noah, a critical care paramedic, is suddenly thrust into fatherhood when his sister dies in an accident; life is never the same for him. He inherits a 7 month old baby girl named Ava. He loses his selfish girlfriend, has to move from London to the country to fulfill his sister's wishes. At first he's so overwhelmed that he answers a letter from the biological father whom abandoned his sister while pregnant. That's when he finds out how bad the guy really is.

Maya is the helicopter captain who pilots the missions for air EMS rescues. They meet under stressful times at first, but soon get along great. Maya is divorced, but her ex didn't seem to get the memo. When her ex has an accident, she's stuck taking care of him when he's released. Only because saying no to him will inflict problems with their son.

Besides, her ex is emotionally blackmailing her from something that happened years ago. When her ex finds out about Noah and Maya's friendship, he comes up with an ultimatum. Noah will get to keep his niece if he stays away from Maya forever.

What will Noah do with this information? Use it or cut Maya off from their lives?

A must read!!

I have enjoyed many of Helen's books already, but with this story being about an air ambulance crew I was worried if it would could compete with other series I have recently started reading, also dealing with medical teams. Well I should not have worried! I loved this book and cant wait to read the next in the series.

Although we do get to experience some of the excitement when the crew is out on calls, the main focus of this book is not on the rescues, but on the personal lives of Maya and Noah, the main characters. I thought Maya was a really strong female character, but I struggled to understand what hold her ex could possibly have over her making her be there for him when he definitely did not deserve it, but all was revealed in due time. Noah was a lovely character with a heart of gold taking care of his niece and doubting himself as many new parents do.

This story is uplifting, exciting and sweet. It has a beautiful setting in Dorset and has a wonderful community feeling to it.

Helen Rolfe's Come Fly with Me marks the beginning of an exciting new series, and it kicks off with a bang!

In this installment, we are introduced to the Red team of the Skylarks, the air ambulance service of Whistlestop River. Maya, a pilot in the red team, is living her dream. However, she must make her ex-husband realise that their relationship is over. On the other hand, Noah has relocated to Dorset to provide his niece, Eva, with the best life possible after her mother's tragic passing. He also joins the red team as a critical care paramedic.

Helen's descriptive writing immediately immersed me in the world of Dorset, making me feel like part of the story. I absolutely loved it. Excited to see what’s next!

Come Fly With Me is the first in a new series The Skylarks featuring the Whistlestop River air ambulance team.

I've loved every one of Rolfe's series I've read to date; Lantern Square, The Kindness Club on Mapleberry Lane and the Heritage Cove. So I knew I was going to love this one just as much.

It's a heartwarming read full of love, loss and everything in between.

Friends to lovers is another of my favourite tropes, as is the happy ever after.

Maya and Noah are both struggling with unforeseen events in their private lives, so throw themselves headlong into their work to keep themselves occupied. They find comfort in each other and then romance finds them.

Brilliant characters, a great storyline and an absolute delight to read.

I love the premise of Come Fly with Me and the medical aviation setting.

Unfortunately I found myself struggling through it, and I think the authors writing style is just not my cup of tea. I found myself getting bogged down in the detailed explanations and descriptions.

However going by other reviews, I think I’m the exception! I did enjoy the storyline, and can see it being a great read for someone looking for a detailed slow burn.

Thank you Boldwood Books for a copy of this book. Opinions expressed are my own.

I am married to a pilot and we both used to work in healthcare so when I read the synopsis I knew it was something I wanted to read. I picked up with every intention to just read a little. Next thing I knew I had put all my responsibilities on hold and I was halfway through. I absolutely devoured this book and I didn’t want it to end. I can’t wait for the next book in this series so that I can see what is next for some of these lovable characters!

Helen has done it again - written a believable story that has the reader hooked and enthralled from Page One. I thoroughly enjoyed the will they won't they aspect and the back story of blackmail and manipulation. Cleverly written as usual and well up to Helens usual excellent standard.

In Come Fly With Me, Helen Rolfe, takes readers on an emotional journey through the skies of Dorset, where Maya and Noah navigate the turbulence of their personal lives while saving others in need.

Maya, a pilot with the Whistlestop River air ambulance team, finds solace in the vast expanse of the sky as she escapes the confines of her failed marriage. Her passion for flying and dedication to saving lives with the Skylarks provides her with a sense of purpose, even as she struggles to break free from the shadows of her past.

Noah, a paramedic who recently moved from London to Dorset, carries the weight of grief and responsibility on his shoulders following the sudden death of his sister. Caring for his infant niece, Eva, becomes both a blessing and a challenge as he questions his ability to provide for her needs.

When Maya and Noah work together, their connection is immediate and undeniable. Despite the complexities of their individual circumstances, they find comfort and companionship in each other's presence. As their friendship blossoms into something deeper, they grapple with the uncertainty of whether they can afford to take a chance on love amidst the chaos of their lives.

Through heartfelt storytelling, Rolfe explores themes of healing, forgiveness, and the transformative power of love. Come Fly With Me serves as a reminder that we find life's greatest joys in the bonds we share with others, and that every moment offers an opportunity to embrace the possibility of a brighter tomorrow.

With its interesting characters and uplifting message, this novel will resonate with readers who believe in the redemptive nature of second chances. The book is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the healing power of love.

I recently binged all of the available episodes of the American/Canadian show SkyMed and the Australian show RFDS, both of which feature flying medical services, so picking up Helen Rolfe's novel, Come Fly with Me was the perfect follow up. I read it in one weekend, and then spent a few nights listening to the audiobook as I fell asleep, and enjoyed both immensely.

What I liked most was that this isn't a story about innocent ingenues. Both Maya and Noah have life experience, and been adversely affected by it. Reading a friends-to-romance story about actual adults with jobs and children was wonderful, and both characters really sang.

I also liked the choice to set it in a flying EMT service. I love hospital dramas as much as anyone, but adding the element of flight took things to another level (no pun intended) and really let Rolfe show off her research skills as well.

The pacing of the story seemed pretty much perfect to me, and I enjoyed the side characters as well, because they rounded out the story and added dimension to the leads. I also appreciated Rolfe's vivid descriptions of the fields around Dorset and the skies above them. I felt like I was along for the helicopter ride, racing to someone's rescue.

Overall, this is a fantastic read, much deeper than a typical romance, with a really satisfying story. The fact that it's book one of a new series is an added bonus.

Goes well with coffee and a breakfast sandwich from a local café.

Wow! What a series this promises to be based on this epically brilliant first book.

I definitely think Helen Rolfe has come up with a fantastic setting, and I've never read anything before featuring an air-ambulance team, and better still with a female helicopter pilot too!

It is clear there has been a lot of research put into this book as we really get to feel as though we know Hilda (the helicopter) and the Red team especially well. Including Maya who really needs to do something about the horrible hold her now divorced husband has over her and Noah who is new in town, complete with Eva his niece.

There are some exceptionally horrible men in this book, and I was curious to see just what would happen to them (if anything).

But above all this is a totally fascinating story, many ups and downs (especially in helicopters), and I absolutely loved seeing how the characters developed over the course of the book.

And the big reveal of Maya's massive secret was something I definitely wasn't able to guess.

I already can't wait to read the next book in the series.

Thank you to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Audiobook narrated by my favorite narrator: Karen Cass.

An enjoyable book with a little romance and uniting of the two main characters: a newly devorced woman and a bachelor who's just become the guardian of a little baby girl. He has just relocated to the little town and the two of them meet via their jobs - he's a paramedic and she the pilot of the emergency rescue helicopter.

This is a book that's quickly read and also pretty quickly forgotten. Good entertainment, but nothing more. The two negatives I have are
1) some of the characters were just a bit too simple, and by some I mean the ex husband, and the baby's father. They are both portrayed as "villains", which is fine, but something seems to be missing for me to see them as "real" people and bit just random characters in a book. They are "only bad" - nothing good is said or shown about them which makes it a bit weird that the main character was ever married to him for so long. I was just missing some nuance to the characters, some more depth and layers
2) at times the writing is very repetitive and explains things was too much as if the reader has forgotten what was mentioned just a few sentences before.

A brilliant new series featuring the Skylarks. Maya is the pilot of the air ambulance and I feel she wants to cut ties with her ex husband but feels she can't because of their son. Noah is the new paramedic on the air ambulance team and is doing his best at looking after his niece after his sister died unexpectedly but he's not sure he is cut out to be a parent. I really enjoyed and appreciated getting to learn all that is involved in the air ambulance service. It's really a lot more to it than you think. My heart swelled with love as Noah and his bond with niece Eva deepened. The plot took me on a emotional rollercoaster as the reader navigates love, loss, family, resilience, responsibility and fighting for what you believe in.

Book 1 of a new series set in Dorset and the Air Ambulance. Maya is one of the pilots, her husband who she is divorced makes her life hell, but he has a hold over her and does not let her forget it. Noah is a new paramedic on the team he also has his niece living with him.

I loved it when Maya was checking everything in the cockpit, the crew wearing the helmets and talking to each other. I was so true, last year whist on a cruise I took a trip in Iceland in a Helicopter, It brought back memories for me and the book was so realistic.

A few problems are entwined in this story, but as usual it was another great read. I can recommend this and have no hesitation in giving 5* and looking forward to book 2
