"Dr. Tom Hale is an experienced medical missionary in Nepal, and his commentary is essentially a missionary's commentary. Although he has done his biblical homework, and he thinks theologically, he does not write from the ivory tower of academia. His concern is rather for the grass roots of newly planted churches. He is familiar with the problems they face and the questions they ask. He wrestles with the need for cross-cultural application. He is committed to the unity of the church and urges us to give one another the liberty of interpretation in those secondary areas in which we disagree. And his straightforward, easy-to-read style includes both a simple vocabulary and short sentences. Inevitably a one-man commentary will not please everybody. But he has struggled to rid himself of bias, so that there is very much here for all Bible students to learn, whatever their cultural or denominational background. In fact the Applied New Testament Commentary should help to promote mutual understanding, tolerance and respect among Christian people."

Also publishes as Tom Hale.

In 1970, Thomas Hale and his wife, Cynthia, went to Nepal to work for their first twelve years at a rural mission hospital in the village of Amp Pipal. Subsequently they moved to Kathmandu, Nepal's capital city, where they have continued their work with the mission. Recently Cynthia took a position as an associate professor at Nepal's only medical school, and Tom has written a one-volume commentary on the New Testament, first in Nepali and subsequently in English for translation into other languages.

I love the accessibility of this commentary. It is written to address the kinds of questions that anyone who is reading the text closely is asking. Certainly it addressees the kind of questions that 7 ask of the text in order to be able to understand it.

I really like the backstory and spirit of this commentary series. Tom Hale was a medical missionary in the Philippines and realized the need for a simple commentary. This series doesn’t deal with minor or obscure points, but does a good job of grasping the essence of each passage. Highly recommended.
