Sequel to The Measure of a Man

1336. Three months ago, petty thief Kit Porter escaped a life of crime and abuse at the hands of Marcus de Crecy, the leader of the notorious outlaw gang, the Sun League. With the help of City Guardsman Alec Weston and his second-in-command, Robert Warren, Kit evaded capture and escaped England. Kit and Alec fell in love along the way, and now all three men are settling into a life of safety in Bruges, Belgium.

When he receives news of his mother’s failing health, Kit must return to England alone. Old allies aid him again, but Kit faces deception and betrayal at every turn. His dark past catches up with him, and a terrible fate awaits him if Alec, with the help of his friend, merchant Jamie McEwen, cannot get to Kit in time. The conspiracy against them runs deeper than they suspected, and treachery waits in unexpected places. Alec and Jamie don’t know who they can trust, and the clock is quickly running out for Kit.

Normally I would need a quick re read after so long between books, just to remind myself who's who and what's what. However book 1 and 2 left such an impact on me I found I could just jump straight back into this story.

The world building in these books is so realistic, I found myself falling deep into the life these guys had to live. Scenes pulled me in so deeply I could hear the sounds of the horses and smell the stale sweat and blood. A truly gripping tale.

Kit and Alec captured my heart in books 1 and 2 and finally gave me my just reward in book 3, although not without a fair amount of turmoil.

I loved Roger and was so happy to see him get a partner at last.

Jamie surprised me, and while a little sadness crept in at how he was forced to go with convention, it was clear there was love to be found for him, just not the way I dreamed of.

Normally the females in books tend to be on the evil bitchy side, and out of the 4 women we meet 2 could easily fall into that category. How ever while I might of despised one and disliked the other, both were portrayed in a realistic way I could find no fault with.

Marcus was a villain I easily hated and while Kit found sympathy for him I had no problem rejoicing at his comeuppance. Stephen was the only one to leave me feeling torn over. Out of everyone I would like to read his story on how he became involved with the Sun League. He was kind of the baddie with a heart.

This story is woven over 3 books, and while I had issues with the way book 1 left me hanging, I am so happy I gave it a chance. This time period will not be for everyone, but I would urge anyone to give this short series a chance. There is action and adventure, intrigue and dirty dealings, and there is of course a strong M/M love through out.

Overall I love these books and will happily try more from this author. I already feel the urge to go back and start this adventure all over again.
