A former military brat, then military spouse, S.R. Howen lives in Texas with a dozen cats, two squirrels, one raccoon, one dog, and her daughter. A traditional naturalist, she stays busy working with wild life and cat rehab and rescue centers.

Ms. Howen was born a storyteller, much to the amusement of her grandfather and the chagrin of her parents. She honed her writing skills first as an editor then teaching workshops on the craft of winning synopsis and query letters. Her writing career began when she meshed her love of the written word with her passion for her Native American heritage.

She has received high praise, 2014 EPIC award winner, for highlighting the struggles of traditional Native American values and practices in a contemporary modern world, while meshing suspense with the supernatural, in the first two books of her American Indian series, Medicine Man, currently available at Wild Child Publishing (http://www.wildchildpublishing.com). Book three of this series has a pending publication date of 2014.

*I received an ARC of this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review*

I wasn't entirely sure about this book as I read chapter one. By the end of chapter two I was hooked and had a difficult time putting it down. As a matter of fact, if my eyes hadn't started closing on their own I probably wouldn't have gone to bed without finishing it; though I did go to bed thinking about it.

Malachi, a retired vet who is plagued by flashbacks caused by stressful situations, which is all he seems to find himself in after meeting the luscious and captivating Kat. She stirred emotions in him that he'd thought had long been forgotten.

Kat was the black sheep in a small town full of white sheep. Her promiscuity forced her into a life she now tried to escape from; an abusive husband, a family who could care less about her, and a town full judgmental people. That is until she meets Malachi and everything she thought she wanted suddenly didn't seem that important.

Forced together by a twist of fate and a snow storm they quickly realize they are more alike than either had expected and no amount of self-denial would change the fact that they both seemed to want the same thing…each other. Not that anything is that simple.

With Malachi facing jail for protecting Kat and Kat's life in jeopardy from an unknown captor there are no lack of twists and turns. The characters are well written and all have personalities of their own that make you either love them or hate them. And let me just say this book has a lot of characters you love to hate!

My Confession: I'm not sure when I realized who Kat's captor was, but once I did I kept yelling at Malachi to figure it out. Literally yelling at him! And not even the strange looks I got from other people in public bothered me because I was way into the book to care what anyone else thought.

My Favorite Moment: The red string! That was the most perfect moment in the book.

Life Flight by Shaunna Wolf is scheduled to be released December 15th, 2013.

For my 18+ crowd who love a good mystery mixed with a delicious romance then put this date on your calendars because it's well worth the read.

Life Flight is a book I highly recommend. It is an intense story of love, hate and revenge, of the destructive power of people’s narrow-mindedness and prejudice and of the healing power of mutual understanding and love.
The story of two misfits, Kat and Malachi. Two people with their own inner hell to live and the same outer intolerable world to face.
Kat’s story is that of a stepdaughter, victim of physical and mental abuse and unkindness, as most step kids suffer around the world. This will not ‘tame’ her as intended, but only bring to the surface her wild side.
Kat is now a young woman living in the world of men where the saying “what’s good for the gender is good for the goose, too”, never applies. She is known as a woman of not so high morals, a sexual addict, consequently, worthy of all the contempt of those around her. Even of women more wicked than her. “Sexual addict,” she said. She made a rude noise. “Hunter sounds better, addict, addicted to what? I’m not addicted to men, or women, I want to feel something, want to fill the dead zone inside of me with something--so I’m always hunting for the person or thing that will fill it.”
Malachi’s story is that of a former Vietnam soldier who carries with him all the tormenting memories of war, flashbacks of those times haunting him. "Everything my life had been for the last twenty-five years rang like a bad dream, a nightmare from the pits of Vietnam".
For both Kat and Malachi ‘Fear was easy; joy came hard’.
Kat and Malachi meet and what is, at first, just a one-night-stand encounter evolves to a deeper mutual feeling. "..with Kat I knew I would keep feeling what I was. Alive. Warm. As if I had a soul inside me, not just a demon who preyed on others for my next fix of emotions". The chemistry between them is almost palpable.
It’s a story with unexpected twists and turns that will keep you glued to the pages, told in an interesting way: Malachi first POV and Kat third POV. The sensual scenes perfectly matched the characters and their feelings. The book is recommended to readers of +18.

I love romance novels but this is my first venture into erotic romance. At first I had a difficult time getting into the story. But luckily I kept reading and discovered mystery and suspense in Ms. Howen's book. She creates strong characters that became very real to me as the story developed. She kept me guessing as to the killer in the story and if Malachi and Kat would ever get together. In the end I enjoyed this book and would recommend you read it.

Life Flight is one of those books that gives you the unexpected. From its opening chapter that gives us a heroine unashamed of her sexuality, to the double standards held by some in society, to the aftermath of war on a man's psyche, this was a compelling read from start to finish. While some might find this a difficult read at times it's a hard-won HEA that is well worth the wait.

On the day her father died Kat was told to hide her emotions which has led to a woman very aware of her emotions and needs. After her husband tried to mold her into the perfect wife through mental and physical abuse she tried to leave him behind but narrow-minded individuals have kept her tied to him and made her life even more difficult. She's gone from one-night stand to the next looking for something meaningful and satisfying to her heart and soul and just when she finds Malachi her life gets even more complicated. Kat's had a lifetime of disappointment from judgmental family members and others in the tribe that has resulted in low self-esteem and feelings of unworthiness that has led to moments of bad decisions. I felt sympathetic towards Kat and admired her ability to give as good as she gets when people bad mouthed her. She was strong-willed on the outside but emotionally damaged on the inside. I was happy she found Malachai as he truly understood her and wanted to protect her without smothering her spirit.

Malachai's had his own issues in life from a youthful indiscretion with a priest to his many one-night stands to his time spent as a POW during the Vietnam War. It's left him with debilitating flashbacks that transport him back in time and bring out his aggressive side. The only thing that seems to help is losing himself in Kat which helps both of them fight their demons. No matter his problems he's a good guy at heart. He sticks up for Kat against everyone and takes care of her without making her feeling like a burden. He finds peace in caring for others and is a dependable soul willing to be with Kat no matter what. When she's taken from him he never stops looking and their soul-deep connection helps in finding her.

Kat and Malachai are perfect for each other in that they feed into each other's dark needs. There's no shame between them about anything in their past or present as they work towards a future together. This leads to numerous hot and heavy sexual interludes that were like a fantasy during the blizzard that brought them together. Along with their compelling pairing I enjoyed the surprising friendship between Mal and Sheriff Johnny as it was delightful in its brotherly feel. Johnny was supportive of Mal and was right beside him searching for Kat, even jeopardizing his job in support of the man who became his friend. The only part of the story that felt out of place was Kat's kidnapping as it felt a bit soap operaish in its being over the top. It came out of the blue and put numerous red herrings into this part of the story, though the true culprit was obvious to me. It slowed down the overall story's pace and impeded the strong connection they had forming,

Except for that small quibble I found this a compelling read with characters you can't help but be drawn to. The sexual interludes are intense as are the issues these characters deal with and I will be on the lookout for more by this author because of it.

After 20 years in the army as a medivac pilot, recently retired Malachi settles in a small town, Fond du Lac. Becoming drunk, he lets slip to a man he meets that he's looking for a woman who will let him do anything to her. The new acquaintance, Jake, sets Malachi up to meet Kat-a diabetic, still-married, wild-woman. During a ménage-a-trois, things go horribly wrong when Jake tries to kill Kat and Malachi beats the crap out of him.
When Kat's car is vandalized, Malachi takes her back to his hotel where they are snowed in for a week during a blizzard. During this time her "hunter" and his "demon" are subdued by each other's touch. They admit to themselves, but not to each other, that they want their relationship to continue, after the storm.
When the storm abates, Malachi places a square-tied ring around Kat's finger, issuing a challenge that if he beats her to a location, she will agree to marry to him after her divorce from her abusive almost-ex husband, Frank, is finalized. Kat takes off while Malachi lags behind...where he is arrested for murder when the hired assassin, Jake, unexpectedly dies.
When Malachi is finally released on bail, Kat has disappeared. Malachi, with trooper Johnny Mathew's assistance, embarks on a mission to find her...and the body count continues to rise.

I have to admit that this book was a little hard to get into at first...until I read passed the first few chapters. There were times I had to re-read certain sections to get the gist of what was going on, but that could be down to a location thing...us Aussies may use different terminology. And the sentence construction at times was a little abrupt, but that may be that I am used to longer, descriptive sentences. All-in-all, I really got into this book and quite enjoyed it. I would certainly recommend it. Although it is rated for over 18, I didn't find too much language and/or descriptive sex though out.

I was provided an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Life Flight by S.R.Howen written under Shaunna Wolf: Set in a time where women were still considered a man’s property, when if a woman was as free and open with her sexuality as a man he would be considered virile while she would be promiscuous. Mal meets Kat and sparks fly. Shaunna Wolf has written something that paints an interesting picture of a time that wasn’t all that long ago and it’s grown on me. “Just as a heroin addict chases a substance-induced high, sex addicts are bingeing on chemicals — in this case, their own hormones.” –Alexandra Katehakis. So true, whether you call your sexual hunger a demon or a hunter, it still consumes you and others, but it seemed to work out for Mal and Kat.

Captain Malachi Blackfeather has just survived 20 years of the Army and being a POW in Vietnam, to come to the small town of Fond du lac Wisconsin and have his world flipped on its axis. He’ll screw anything with a pulse, drinks and smokes way too much and is now considered a ‘transient’, but what’s really about to rock his world is Kathrin White Wolf. Kat is a woman of smaller stature but of big personality. With a mouth of a sailor and a body of a porn star, she immediately catches Mal’s attention, sitting at a bar drinking her Bloody Mary’s.
After almost dying and spending a whirlwind week trapped in Mal’s room, Kat is on a whole new level and things seem to be looking up…but it’s just about to hit the fan.

My opinion of this book… wow Shaunna, I just don’t know where to start?! My initial reaction to the first few chapters was shock. I was not prepared for what you wrote, but I hung in there and stayed the course and was rewarded. I found the characters so hopelessly flawed, yet endearing and captivating. Toward the middle with Kat missing, I felt for Mal and wanted desperately to see him find his missing little cat (I loved Johnny by the way, great guy!) Oh and the anger at the man that did her wrong?! Whew… But in the end when it seemed like she would push him away after everything he did to find and save her, and to give back that little red string, I almost had tears in my eyes.

In conclusion, 2 thumbs up Shaunna, I enjoyed reading this. At times it was eye opening and made me blush, and then you go to the next page and you are ready to throttle someone for their poor choice in words or actions. Definitely a rollercoaster of emotions. Due out December 15th, I'll be recommending this book to many others.

***4.5 stars and recommended for audiences over the age of 18***

I received an ARC of S.R. Howen's "Life Flight" for an honest review.

"Life Flight" is a dark, intense, deeply layered and emotional read that will interest any reader in the erotic/romance/suspense genre.

Set in 1985, the work revolves around Captain Malachi Blackfeather, a recently retired US Army and Vietnam Veteran, and Kathrin (Kat) White Wolf, a survivor of domestic violence (intimate terrorism), and an abusive marriage.

Malachi and Kat meet under unusual circumstances, and establish a connection that takes both characters by surprise. As the layers are peeled back, it is revealed that both characters are fighting their own battles, demons, and psychological trauma. Malachi experiences flashbacks and suffers PTSD, while Kat is trying to escape the reach of her family, and her ex-husband.

In this work, battles aren’t just fought in warzones by soldiers. They take place everywhere: in private residences, small towns and importantly, in the hearts and minds of people. Psychological traumas take physical form through sex addiction, fight or flight behavioral patterns and social isolation.

As Malachi and Kat’s relationship develops, tensions from the past culminate that threaten to tear them apart. Both characters realize how much they need each other, not to just survive events, but also, to truly live in the world. I became invested in both characters, separately and together.

This is a book that covers complex themes: the intersection of race, gender, class, societal battles and how they’re experienced at the individual level. It is also a story about privilege and how the factors of what makes someone up is not the sum total of who they are.

One of the highlights of this book was the focus on a Native American couple portrayed ‘inside’ history and in our recent past. It was a refreshing change to examine and explore contemporary issues through the characters, as opposed to having Native Americans depicted as a people in historical stasis.

“Life Flight” by Shaunna Wolf is a gritty and erotic suspense novel that centers around two tortured souls who seek solace with each other in a single heated encounter that surprises them when their connection continues. Captain Malachi Blackfeather spent twenty years in the Army and saw his own version of hell and combats his demons by engaging in very intense and edgy sexual encounters. He comes to realize that Kathrin (Kat) White Wolf uses sex to deal with her own issues, despite the risk. The two of them bond through a series of unusual events but the harsh realities of their respective pasts pose a serious threat to not only their mental and physical health but to their very lives. They have been fighters for all of their lives but unfortunately they may have finally found something that can break them both.

This intense novel is a compelling yet uncomfortable read. The emotional scars that each of the main characters bear causes them to seek solace in a relatively unconventional manner yet it works for them. The innate decency that forms the core of Malachi and the determined refusal to conform that allows Kat to cope with her diabetes, spousal abuse and subsequent horrific experiences make both of these people memorable and the addition of the connections of the secondary characters weaves an impressive tale that draws one in even as fears mount that there can’t possibly be an acceptable resolution. There are certain elements that are a little too contrived for me and a few dangling threads that aren’t quite tied off as neatly as I would like but wow, this is one of those stories that makes you anxious to get to the end because you can’t wait to see how it turns out. Definitely a page-turner but be advised that this darkly sensual story is definitely not a light and airy read.

A copy was provided to me in return for an honest review.

I don't think intense is too strong a word to describe author S. R. Howen's "Life Flight". This is a powerful story of two people, both suffering from battle fatigue. Kat White Wolf Grew up knowing her family disapproved of her, considered her promiscuous, untamable. Her stepfather beat her often and with impunity. As a grown woman, not much has changed; still defiantly promiscuous and untamable, her husband picks up where her stepfather left off, only with abusive sex added to the list of tortures.
Malachi Blackfeather is three months home from twenty years of active duty. He knows what ails him--he can slip in and out of his mind periodically and revisit the battlefield if he's enclosed in small spaces, or encounters certain odors or hears a certain sound or meets confrontation. Without his permission, he can slip into survival mode, it's kill-or-be-killed when his inner demons take over and he loses his grip on reality. He knows this, knows he will have to fight the demons, fight to stay in the real world.
To meet a woman who suffers from the same affliction--a hunter, is how Kat describes the animal in her who craves, seeks dangerous, risky intercourse--actually helps Malachi. Kat quiets the demons within him, channels their hunger for battle by engaging in unrestricted, wild intercourse.
The demonized Malachi and the huntress Kat match perfectly, neither able to tolerate being caged in any way, shape, or form, both longing to find another human with whom they can connect, and who understands what they are, and why.
There is mystery. Author Shaunna Wolf meticulously peels away layers that reveal hidden motives. These layers laid raw, expose sadistic ambitions. "Life Flight" is truly an intense, pulse-pounding read.

From the start, Shaunna Wolf’s “Life Flight” is an incredibly engaging story, with life-like characters that practically leap off the page and grab hold of you. Initially, I was worried that I might have a hard time relating to adult characters in a story set in the mid-80s, but Wolf’s writing turned out to be timeless.

Wolf’s story is the erotic/romantic tale of Malachi Blackfeather, retired US Army, Vietnam veteran and seven-foot tall Native American, and Kat White Wolf, a strong-willed woman trying to escape an abusive marriage and a family who doesn’t understand her. When they meet up, sparks, flames and an inferno of emotion and need flare to life.

Of course, life isn’t so simple. Both Kat and Malachi carry deep wounds and heavy scars from their pasts. At times, it’s hard to see if they will be able to work through their issues to find happiness with each other. Wolf adds an extra layer to the story of Malachi and Kat, as they suddenly find themselves separated in the midst of a dark mystery. This was an unexpected treat, fully engaging the reader’s interest, and drawing my immediate concern for the characters.

Wolf creates characters that are extremely real and engaging. The pacing and flow of the story makes this an incredibly easy read and almost impossible to put down. She brings to life the passion, emotional and physical struggles of Malachi and Kat.

In “Life Flight”, Wolf is able to craft a romantic/erotic story around two very real characters, a rare treat for genre-readers. The passion gets very steamy, but the plot is entirely character-driven, yielding a story that is both surprising and enjoyable.

This was a powerful read, featuring two complex and appealing main characters. Malachi, the hero, is a recently-returned Vietnam vet who piloted helicopters to evacuate wounded soldiers. He first meets the heroine, Kat, in a bar where she is escaping the pain of a broken marriage and the abuse of a husband who refuses to let her go. Sparks fly, and soon Malachi and Kat are hooking up in a hot threesome with a dude whose true intent is not sex but murder.

Although Malachi is able to protect Kat from the first attempt on her life, he comes under suspicion himself. Soon it is evident that whoever is after Kat--and there are several candidates besides the stalker husband--is not going to stop. While Malachi fights his own problems with the law, he meets a state trooper who remembers him from their war days, and they slowly bond. The trooper, Johnny, is another great character in a story that is filled with richly-layered, well-developed, and genuinely likeable people. I particularly enjoyed the way Kat is determined to claim her sexual freedom despite the disapproval she encounters from her moralistic family and the more conventional townsfolk. Malachi's acceptance of her personal choices was one of the things that made me love him, too.

The story takes a dark turn toward the end, and the suspense really heats up. I read this book avidly, hating to put it down when other responsibilities claimed my attention and delighted to take it up again as soon as I could make time. If you enjoy intense, suspenseful thrillers with well-written erotic elements, you'll love this.

This book was one of those that completely takes you unawares and has you reading late into the night. I wasn't sure about the first part of the book but as it opened up and I got to know the characters I began to root for them both. Kat is involved in a bitter divorce, stuck between her family who want her to stay with her abuser and a dream to finally be able to be herself. Mal is dealing with a sexual addiction and is struggling with the aftereffects of his life in the military. When the two forces collide, sparks fly and the blazing heat is hot enough to singe my knickers. Whew!

There are many kinds of battle. Those fought externally and those fought inside your own mind. Both of these characters have scars, inside and out and watching them interact was truly intense.

Great read. I almost didn't get any sleep last night. These two damaged characters will quickly find their way into your heart.

Intense is probably the best adjective for this book. The characters, the backstory, and the plot are all dark and intense. It's definitely a novel for a more mature reader due to the explicit sex and violence, but I'm arguably a mature reader, so that was fine for me. I'm old enough.

I've been reading a little more romance here lately because I have friends or acquaintances who write it and one of my complaints is often that the obstacles to the couple getting together are contrived, that there really aren't any obstacles, so the writer has to invite unlikely situations to keep them from getting together too quickly. That's definitely not true of this book. Malachi and Kat both have traumatic histories and sketchy relationships with community standards of morality and the law. Both are outcasts with serious trust issues (justified by their histories). Not to mention the other plot involving attempted murder and kidnapping, providing logistical obstacles like jail time when emotional obstacles aren't enough.

These two definitely had a hard row to hoe and a lot to overcome to find happiness together. By the second half of the book, I was definitely rooting for things to work out for them. A more believable than usual romance with exciting elements of detective stories and a touch of mysticism. Very good read.

I have to admit, I had low expectations of enjoying this book. The premise didn’t really appeal to me, and I didn’t think I’d enjoy a dark erotic suspense story. I. WAS. WRONG. OMG I loved this book. Malachi and Kat are two of the most messed up, haunted, amazing, complex yet completely appealing characters I’ve read in a long time.

Malachi is still screwed up from his Vietnam days (the book is set in 1985) and Kat is trying to escape an abusive almost-ex husband. Both characters are considered “sex addicts” and have never met anyone they wanted to be with for more than one night. But in each other they’ve finally found a person who understands them at the soul-deep level. The sex scenes are dark, twisted and yet wonderful, and the blossoming relationship between Malachi and Kat will keep you turning pages until the end. I highly recommend.

I received a copy of this book in return for an honest review--this is why I was hesitant to read it. I don't like leaving poor reviews. Thank goodness, that wasn't an issue here.

Kat is a fiesty, free-spirited woman. Malachi has just returned home after serving twenty years in the Army, a Vietnam veteran who was faced with heavy combat. Worlds collide when they meet at a bar one night. Two people who thought they did not have the capacity to love fall into a hot and heavy relationship. Meanwhile, Kat has trouble coming to terms with her failed marriage, especially since her husband refuses to sign the divorce papers. Malachi does not trust Kat's ex husband, Frank. The latter of the two seems like he is up to no good and will do anything to make his wife mind. Life Flight is set in 1985, after feminism had its first wave, but male chauvinism was still pervasive. While many of the people in Kat's life expect her to return to her abusive husband and be a "good little wife," she has other plans. The plot thickens when Malachi finds out more about Kat's sordid past. Despite her bad reputation, Malachi is detemined to to protect Kat from those who feel they have reason to harm her. Both of them now realize the importance of sticking together, especially sicne their survival is at stake. is a hot, suspenseful book for those looking for action in every sense of the word.

In Life Flight, it’s 1985 and we meet Malachi Blackfeather. Just out of the Army after twenty years, he’s battling his POW flashbacks and sex addiction. He meets promiscuous Kat Wolf who is damaged from an abusive marriage. Sparks fly and they are both surprised to find happiness. But murder gets in their way and circumstances try to keep them apart.

Shaunna’s fantastic writing paints vivid pictures. I felt like I was right there watching Kat and Malachi. I really loved the development of the characters and a creative and twisting plot. I highly recommend this fast-paced, page turning tale. I couldn’t put Life Flight down. I can’t wait to read more books by S.R. Howen.

Far more than I expected

Wow, I went into this story expecting the opposite of what I got.

This book was far longer than anticipated, it needed to be so in order to cover all the details. The twists and turns kept me captivated, and the amount of continual drama rendered me breathless.

This is a story that is meant to be a movie. I was absolutely blown away.

Sarah's Review
Thanks to Goddess Fish and Shaunna Wolf for the chance to read this story. This story captured my attention because of the Military aspect of it. This story is not one that I probably would have found if not for the tour.

WARNING: This story deals with elements that could be trigger inducing if you have had traumatic experience. As a social worker, I need to give the warning.

I truly enjoyed Malachi and Kat as characters and I enjoyed their story line together. There were aspects that I didn’t enjoy, but overall, they won me over. With their backgrounds, I wonder if fate actually leads these characters to each other.

Secondary characters had a few that I really liked and a few I couldn’t stand. That’s normal for me though. Some characters I was immediately had distrusted and some that concerned me, but I did have a surprise with what actually happened.

This was a very intense read for me, and I found myself trying to fight back a tear or two, more than a couple of times throughout the book. Kat has been through allot, and finds it very hurt to trust men because of this. But she finds herself falling for Malachi when she least expects it, this book throws you off your feet completely and it will have you second guessing yourself trying to figure out what the hell is going on. And even though Kat an Malachi seem like unlikeable people from time to time, they are good people who will have you rooting for them. I would definitely recommend this book to erotic, romance lovers.

A gritty, suspenseful romance between two tortured souls, who finally find a kindred spirit. But will their demons, both alive and dead, let them be together? Set in 1985 Wisconsin, and written in the dialect for added effect, Ex-Army helicopter pilot Malachi and Soon-to-be ex-abused wife Kat meet in the middle of a bigger plot than they can possibly imagine. Once I got used to the dialect, I couldn't put it down. A great story, and will keep you guessing until the very end.

Gritty and dark, Life Flight by S. R. Howen kept my attention from the first page.

Malachi Blackfeather is scarred with a slew of personal demons to overcome. Vietnam saw to that. Intense and mysterious, he’s no one to mess with. He’s also addicted to sex and unable to commit to anyone.

Kat has her own demons and an abusive ex-husband who still regards her as his. Trusting anyone, let alone a man, is not in her life plan…ever.

When Malachi sees Kat, desire roars to life. He expects his interest to wane after the first night as it does with every other woman. However the wounds Kat is hiding speak to him. Soon, Malachi finds himself wanting more with her. Could he have found someone he could actually spend forever with?
Malachi’s need to protect her and be with her pulls him into her world. When she doesn’t meet up with him as promised, he goes on a search to find what happened to her.

Howen takes her readers on hair-raising twists and turns until she arrives at a thoroughly satisfying happy ending.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys dark, erotic romance.

Two battle-scarred people stumble into each other expecting nothing beyond a one-night stand, as usual. Malachi, is deeply wounded mentally, emotionally and spiritually from his experience in the Vietnam war. Kat is equally scarred for very different reasons. Struggling to learn to trust each other, they learn to fix, not each other, but themselves. The writer gives good insight into the battles that continue for many veterans long after they’ve left the battlefield. There is very graphic sex, but these scenes aren’t just thrown in for effect or shock value, as is often the case. These sex scenes are inherent to the story line and are kept at a minimum. A very different read for me. Good story.

Captain Malachi Blackfeather has just gotten out of the army after twenty years in, two of them as a POW. He’s having an understandably difficult time fitting in. The things that seem to interest civilians don’t interest him. At best, they bore him. The only things that don’t bore him are his car—a black ’85 Corvette—and his sexual urges. Malachi likes it rough, and a new friend claims to have met a girl named Kat who does also. But when things heat up, it turns out this new friend has been paid a thousand bucks by the girl’s ex to kill her, and he wants to rope Malachi into the scheme. Malachi and Kat escape and end up forced together, and a torrid and unconventional love affair develops between them.

In this raunchy novel, Howan follows two disparate but equally interesting characters. Malachi is tough and capable. His experiences in the military have given him a unique perspective, and he’s ready for anything. Kat is feisty and very likeable. By switching POVs chapter to chapter, Howan gives the reader insight into the characters, taking Kat from a conquest and damsel in distress, to a sympathetic, well-rounded character. The writing is clear and provocative. I enjoyed this book and would like to read more of Howan’s work.
