Enthraller
The planet Aponi sits at the outer edge of the Verdant String.
For Wren Thorakis, working as an Aponian Special Forces artifacts consultant, it means interesting assignments and unusual discoveries. Being captured and held for ransom by a strange cult while working on the moon Ytla was not something she expected, though. However, while escaping her captors, she stumbles across what could be the discovery of her career—one that no artifact consultant could possibly ignore—a genuine ancestral mothership.
The mothership isn’t just amazing in itself, though. Wren finds herself the recipient of crazy-powerful nanotech. It helps keep her alive and one step ahead of those trying to hide the ship’s existence.
When Wren starts working out who’s behind keeping her discovery secret, and why, she is plunged into a bigger plot than she ever imagined.
A shadowy organization has its eye on Aponi, and isn’t shy to use the Verdant String’s fiercest enemies, the Caruso, to help them take it from the Coalition.
When an Aponi Special Forces soldier, Ed Zeneri, who’s existence is also inconvenient to Wren’s enemies, is lured into a trap with Wren and they both come under fire, Wren’s nanotech does whatever it has to to keep her safe—including enthralling Ed to protect her at all costs.
Ed knows his reaction to Wren isn’t normal, or even sane, but as the compulsion to put himself in front of anything coming at her recedes, he finds he’s more than inclined to do it of his own volition.
He joins forces with Wren to try to stop the takeover of their home planet, and as they race the clock to find the answers they need, he also has to convince Wren that what he feels for her is real.
As real as the enemy battleships hovering in Aponi’s nearspace. As real as the deadline to bring them down.

Enthraller is the seventh book in Diener’s Verdant String series. Like the others, you could enjoy this book as a standalone, but as it references plot points from the previous six books, I think you’ll enjoy it more if you’ve read the previous books in the series.
Let me just get this out of the way: I’m ready for the crossovers, Michelle! Enthraller does a great job of tying together the events in previous books, going all the way back to the 0.5 novellas Interference / Insurgency. There is even a character in Enthraller that showed up on the isolated, yet-to-be-discovered by the other VS planets, Fjern (Peace Maker).
As is Diener’s formula, Enthraller introduces us to a new set of love interest protagonists. And as in previous books, the FMC has stumbled upon those ‘silver beads’ that grants her special powers. However, in Wren’s case, the nanotech has granted her almost comic book hero-like superpowers, assumingly because she ingested five silver balls rather than one? It made for some cool action sequences, but Wren overshadowed the MMC a bit, I think.
In terms of the romance, this was the first time I felt it was slightly shoehorned into the story, rather than growing organically along with the plot. I think it was because of the way Wren’s powers initially enthralled Ed. I know that is the hook of the plot, but the nanotech has never manipulated others rather than just assisting its host. Again, more superpower than benevolent internal boosting power, but I still recommend this book and it is a great addition to a fantastic space opera romance series.

This is seventh in a sci-fi romance series and is fairly unconnected to the others. You could read this as a stand-alone, but I wouldn't recommend it. A bunch of the significance of some of the setup relies on information in previous stories, like Ed's home world destruction and the nanites and the big bad Coruzons. I recommend reading in order. Plus the other books are pretty good, without exception and how rare is that?
If you've read the others, you know what to expect. Ed and Wren are thrown together by violence and intrigue and they bond fast and tight. And I'm all-in for it. Wren's nanites are a bit of a departure from other stories in that they're less "superpower" and more subtle support. I feel like her nanites became a character in their own right and I kind of liked how that worked out, not least as they work out some of their relationship dynamics with Wren during the course of this story.
The relationship is fast and I think Ed attaches a bit too precipitately, particularly given the initial emotional manipulation. He's awful certain of his attachment very early and I feel like the support for that was a bit thin. On the other hand, I really appreciated that we didn't have half a novel of him questioning his attachment and being all die-away about "is this real". So I'm going to give that a wash.
The pace of this is nearly pitch-perfect with just enough down time for the two main characters to establish their relationship. I was deeply engaged through the whole thing and couldn't put it down to the last. I'm going to call it a full five stars, despite some of the qualms above.
A note about Chaste: They have sex, but Diener pulls the curtain at the very last moment possible and still remain chaste (in my evaluation). So this is questionably chaste and if your line is at all more strict than mine, it probably crosses it.

Another fantastic entry in the Verdant String, SF series
Wren and Ed are a wonderful pairing. Each is a powerful warrior, and their loyalty and teamwork are amazing in every action scene. As is typical with MD, there is no overt sex on the page, but there is plenty of emotional and sensual chemistry between these two lovers.
It's been a while since I read the other books in this series, but I was easily able to immerse myself into this SF world again. I love this whole series, and I know I will be rereading it many times in the future. Every one of the books is a keeper, and I look forward to any future books in this series.

I enjoyed this book, #7 in the Verdant String series. The entire series is a wonderful example of escapism literature, light sci-fi romance. Running and shooting galore. Imperiled hero and heroine. Powerful antagonists. High stakes. Tension amps with every few pages, feeding my craving for fictional adventures. The scientific facts of astronomy or space travel are not addressed at all. It is delightfully unrealistic, the way Murderbot and his friend ART like it.
Also I'm happy to report that this novel paves the way for at least one more book in the series. Can't wait.

Can’t say enough about this series! The characters are amazing…vibrant and refreshing. The world building is perfection! Michelle Diener delivers once again with her addition to the Verdant String series…mystery, intrigue with nail biting action will have you riveted to this read! What I love about this book is with each page you turn, you fall more in love with her characters…and when it ends, you start investigating when the next book in the series will be published. I LOVE THIS SERIES!! Okay, I have to admit I pretty much love all of Michelle's series, but sci-fi is my favorite. This book brings a lot of past events into play and continues the storyline beautifully. Outstanding writing as usual!

SO much fun! Always a twist and always edge of your seat action and adventure. Wren and Ed needed a bit more depth and their romance would have benefited greatly with a little less insta-love, but everything else was so unique and creative that I just couldn’t lower the overall stars. I enjoyed it too much!

February 26, 2024I'm still on my bullshit with this series. Decent outing, but not my favorite. I thought the whole dissipating thing was weird and unnecessary, but I did appreciate how fast this one moved, and how equally weighted the leads were.

This is a great series. Lots of action, interesting plot, a little romance and wonderful characters. Each book can be read as a standalone but I recommend starting with the first book, Breakaway.

The long game of the Cores is out
Enthraller is 7th in the series, and although it may be read as a standalone, there are multiple references to events that were described in the previous books, including the major plot line of the Cores planning something. So I'd recommend reading previous stories.
Michelle Diener is one of the best author to use a writing technique "show, don't tell". It's immersive and intriguing, imaginative and unique. There is a non stop adventure that leaves me craving for more after the end. The book has dual POV, strong heroine, sweet romance and it's full of suspense.
So the government system is set up in a way that it's very difficult to corrupt and buy people, but not impossible. The story starts with that line - some people are found to be bribed or blackmailed to do little inside jobs... but for whom and why..?? Little by little the story reveal involvement of the Cores (the bad guys from the previous stories) - but until the end - the main question remains - why?
The ending wrapped a part of the story up - but suggests a new book will show how the main story line will continue. The motive behind the long game Cores are playing is finally out, but will they succeed?
And what about the mystery of ancestor space ships?
I have so many questions, and I can't wait to find out answers! I hope new book will be out soon! I just love the suspense!

Enthraller
Ms. Diener you have done it again. I absolutely loved Wren and Ed. They were a great couple! The supporting characters were well written and the world building continues to intrigue you. The overall storyline is outstanding, sucks you in and holds you glued until the end. Highly recommend this book and this series.

While working as an Aponian Special Forces artifacts consultant on the moon Ytla, Wren Thorakis ends up not only escaping after being kidnapped, but is the recipient of an ancient nanotech giving her some extra special abilities. The nanotech are sentient little critters who get absorbed into Wren’s system permanently. They were in the wreckage of the very old mothership of those known in the Verdant String as the Ancestors. Aponi sits at the remotest end of the coalition of VS making them more vulnerable to their enemies who seek to overthrow the planet.
When Wren encounters Ed Zeneri, a former Special Forces operative, who has been recruited to help fight the enemies, Wren’s nanotech coerces Ed to help protect her because he is enthralled by them initially. Ed and Wren work to together using his special talent for detecting hidden illicit cargo on spaceships whether weapons or artifacts, a rare ability only a few people from his destroyed home planet possess. Even with her enhanced enthralling abilities, Ed and Wren realize their attraction is more than the initial influence by the integrated nanotech.
The Verdant Strings’ main enemies, the Caruso, along with some corrupted corporate types who had been routed out known as Cores, are determined to occupy Aponi having many spies and infiltrators in the Aponian military and government. Wren, Ed, and the few they can trust in the upper echelon as well as some troops are desperately trying to stop their enemies from getting the supplies which they need to accomplish the takeover. This book is the seventh in the Verdant String series containing action, adventure, and some romance under the duress of preventing an all-out war on Aponi. This Space Opera Science Fiction series continues to be a fun ride and while it can be read as a standalone, the stories benefit greatly from being read in order.

Enthraller is the latest offering in the Verdant String Series. First of all, this is a complete story with a satisfying ending that can be read alone, although it's more fun if you've read the rest of the series. This is a science fiction adventure in a well-developed, richly embroidered world with people who are very like a possible future human race. It begins with a rush of action that exposes a conspiracy and keeps up the fevered pitch of life-threatening escapes and daring attempts to foil the bad guys' plots all the way through, with a little light romance to give you a second to catch your breath.
Wren no longer trusts her former Special Forces Team from Nanganya for whom she did artifact consulting, and has come to Demeter to get away from them. She and Ed, a Halatian who used to work for Special Forces, are caught up in a trap that almost kills them. Fortunately, Wren has a few tricks up her sleeve, and the two of them join forces to try to discover who wants them out of the way and why.
Along the way to solving their mystery there are space walks and spaceship battles, secret passages and secret abilities as well as an engaging cast of characters (that I would love to see spin-off books for) that help them to uncover multiple layers of conspiracy and a deep-seated plot that leaves them cut off from help while they struggle to stop bad guys who are well-organized and have powerful resources.

Enthraller is Book #7 in The Verdant String series by Michelle Diener. I have really enjoyed exploring this series which is made up of captivating science fiction, romance, and adventure, all set against the lush and imaginative backdrop of seven life-rich planets, spanning five solar systems. The worldbuilding is one of its strongest elements - each planet feels distinct, with its own culture, politics, and environmental challenges, making the Coalition setting feel alive and interconnected.
A series highlight is the balance between high-stakes action and heartfelt character development. Ms. Diener’s protagonists are resourceful, intelligent, and emotionally layered, often navigating both interplanetary intrigue and deep, personal relationships. The romance elements are woven seamlessly into the plot, never overshadowing the sci-fi core but instead enriching it.
Throughout it all there is a sense of optimism and resilience. Even amid danger, there’s a thread of hope, cooperation, and respect for diversity - both human and alien.

War is brewing to take over the planet Aponi!
Wren Thorakis has escaped from her captives and while on the run she finds a decaying ancestral mothership. As an artifacts specialist, this is beyond a fantastic find and when she’s safe she will be back. In her cursory examination, she notes something odd and they notice her too. They hop on board getting under her skin. These little Nano-tech characters now have a host and they are going to do everything in their power to keep her safe healthy and alive. Wren doesn’t know it yet but these little lifesavers will be her best friends.
There’s a war percolating and finding who the good guys’ vs bad guys are, is almost impossible. Aponi Special Forces, Ed Zeneri left the service a few years ago under a scandal but he has a special skill and the good guys need him back. Using a special scanner, only his race can detect what species a being is, or what is hidden inside a spaceship. Wren, Ed, and the Nanotech beings are an unstoppable team, good thing because the danger is everywhere. The evil Caruso wants to take over the peaceful planet of Aponi to steal the valuable minerals mined there and they are ok with killing whoever gets in their way. Everywhere Ed and Wren turn they find another traitor. I love Wren and Ed’s connection and for each other which have nothing to do with being “enthralled” by the Nanotech. Wren and Ed just connect deeply. “Enthraller” is an exciting fast-paced story but I found sometimes I was a little confused with so much going on by so many! It’s a great read. Linda

Wren, Ed, and the Nanotech beings are an unstoppable team, good thing because the danger is everywhere. The evil Caruso wants to take over the peaceful planet of Aponi to steal the valuable minerals mined there and they are ok with killing whoever gets in their way. Everywhere Ed and Wren turn they find another traitor. I love Wren and Ed’s connection and for each other which have nothing to do with being “enthralled” by the Nanotech. Wren and Ed just connect deeply. “Enthraller” is an exciting fast-paced story but I found sometimes I was a little confused with so much going on by so many! It’s a great read. Linda

What a wonderful addition to the Verdant String series, I loved it! Wren Thorakis is the recipient of nanotech found in the wreck of an ancestral mothership. They give her all kinds of awesome abilities and keep her alive. When she encounters Special Forces soldier, Ed Zeneri, he’s been lured into a trap intended to kill them both. Her nanotech keeps her safe and Ed survives, but he’s been enthralled by the tech to protect Wren at all costs. However, the more he and Wren work together, the more he realizes he’s no longer under a compulsion, he wants to protect her for himself. There is a plot to take over the planet of Aponi and Wren and Ed join forces to prevent the deadly attack that is coming. When it is hard to know who to trust or who is involved, they count on just a few trusted allies and each other to put a stop to their enemies. I loved the different ways the nanotech finds to protect Wren and how resourceful she is. Ed is a stalwart and heroic companion that Wren can count on to protect her, even when she doesn’t need protecting, which I think was pretty romantic of him. You don’t need to have read the other books in the series, but it is more fun if you have since there have been others that have encountered the nanotech and some of the events from other books are mentioned in passing in this one.

Enthraller
There is nothing better than the feeling you get when you sit down in your happy spot with a brand new book. Except if that book is by one of your favorite authors. Enthraller captured my imagination, grabbed me by the hand and yelled…let’s do THIS!
Enthraller is the next book in the series, but can definitely be read as a standalone if you’ve never read this amazing series. It truly is amazing and the world building is first class.
Wren is the FMC who I would love to be, her sheer determination to keep moving forward and find the answers, and stop the enemies from accomplishing their goals is mind boggling. Even though she works for the Special Forces, she finds that all things are not as she is being led to believe.
Ed has recently been convinced to go back to his job on Special Forces, but even before he gets where they are going he knows that things are not what they seem. He joins forces with Wren and together they take on an impossible task and they learn that sometimes against all odds you can find inner strength and love.

Awesome continuation of an excellent series!! ‘Enthraller’ is the seventh book in the Verdant String series by Michelle Diener. As with the previous books, this is the story of two main characters that find each other and become a couple. The back story continues evolving the Verdant String worlds and current maneuvering to control the technology and resources of the different planets.
‘Enthraller’ centers on Wren and Ed, who are separately set up by factions working for a Shadow organization. They work together to make sure that the Verdant String world of Aponi will continue to be safe and stay within the Verdant String.
Although you can read this book as a stand-alone, there are a lot of references to incidents that happen in the previous six books. I would definitely recommend this book and suggest it be read in series order to fully appreciate Diener’s beautifully crafted worlds and history.
Fans of Michelle Diener will love this continuation and the rest of you – what are you waiting for??

This is book 7 of the Verdant String series, and while stand alone, I highly recommend you read the other books in the series.
Michelle Diener books are always a delight for me, she is a favourite author, so I admit to bias regarding her work, but with good reason!
It captures you from the beginning, thoroughly engrossing right through to the last word. One of the great joys of reading a Michelle Diener book is that it’s totally unpredictable, and what a delightful change from formulaic books that is.
The world building is, as always, superb, and it’s so beautifully descriptive it transports you to another new and exciting world.
Michelle Diener writes characters beautifully.
Wren is a strong, engaging heroine, and Ed a worthy partner. Their developing relationship set against incredible obstacles, is literally enthralling.

Another fantastic addition to this series, and they can be read as standalone but why would you? Each one has been awesome.
I loved the developing relationship that Wren had with her "nanotech" as much as the love interest, how she was able to communicate with them and share amusement with them.
It wasn't love-at-first-sight with Ed, but pretty close, and the title hints that that needs to be overcome so they actually know each other. I appreciate that as I'm not a big fan of that trope.
Lots of twists and turns, and I rarely complain books are too short but I wanted more. There were a few unanswered questions because this series does have a bit of an overarching story, but more I wanted to know what happened to some of the bad guys that just got abandoned on planets and/or crap situations. Served them all right but I wanted to see their misery haha.

This is number 7 in the series and really you should at least read the prequel novella to know the players. The Verdant string is a group of planets settled by the "Ancestors" and all the stories are loosely connected while jumping between each planet. There is a an overall story arc running in the background as well. This story involves two special forces operatives (different groups) that are lured together and then someone tries to murder them. Ed, is the only one on the planet that can operate a delicate piece of equipment that can suss out contraband that is coming onto the planet. Wren was a hostage on another planet but escaped and since them someone wants her to shut up about what she saw there. As usual the pace is quick and action packed as they join forces. Diener writes lively action and meaningful relationships so this was a pleasure to read. Lots of players to figure out if your starting here as a newbie. More please.

Each book in the series is a stand-alone with a new hero/heroine - but there are some great and interesting tie-ins, so I highly recommend the entire series. I love how some of the challenges/bad guys are a through line through the series; any questions you may have about untied ends from a book (usually just small "what if" type questions) are satisfyingly addressed in other books.
I love the writing, the characterization, and the plots - even my least favorites in the series are rated 5, which I can't say for more than 2 or 3 authors in all of my wide reading experience. Highly recommend if you like romance that doesn't overtake the story, real connections between characters, and sci fi settings without an overwhelming amount of background information to digest before you know what's going on. Highly recommend.

The newest book in the Verdant String series "Enthraller" might be one of my favorites from this series. From the first explosive meeting(and I mean it both figuratively and literally) between Wren and Ed, their chemistry and relationship only grow more powerful. It was never a dull moment with these two, dodging fire, escaping explosions, avoiding kidnappers, and trying to find the enemies that wanted them dead. The story has a fast pace, and the characters are well-written, the plot keeps you intrigued and you never guess who might betray them next. I hope more books in this series will come our way! I highly recommend this book!

This is part of a series and is more enjoyable when the series is read in order. There is so much to keep you entertained in this story; action, suspense, humor, technology, world building, danger, and some romance. There are lots of twists and surprises. The main characters are awesome together, working to figure out what is going on and who they can trust. The story races along and the romance isn’t the main focus. There are some secondary characters that I really hope will be featured or at least make appearances in future books.

The 7th book in the Verdant String series delivers. If you have read the previous books in the series, then this book delivers more of the same, with just enough variety and new information to keep the series interesting while delivering all the things I loved from previous books. I would not recommend starting the series here, as there are quite a few references to events from previous books, and the villain is a character from Peacemaker. If you loves the other entries in this series, then this book should be right up your alley!

Highly recommend. Fast paced, non stop action.
I love re-visiting the Verdant String worlds. So much action in this episode as our heroes continue to deal with the Corporations.
This book starts pulling some of the threads from earlier stories together and I'm so looking forward to where the action heads next.
By the end three characters at the very least need to be rescued or need to finish rescuing themselves - Lily, held captive, and Ethan and Velda, under hostile fire.
Enjoy the fiction, let your imagination loose.

Loved it
The nanotechnology, action, adventures and space travel made this book a 5. I’ve read all the stories in the series and find Ed and Wren’s troubles on several different planets bonded them despite not knowing if Ed was influenced by Wren’s special
Tech. I love the leave it up to your imagination intimate moments and the special skill sets each of the characters possesses. I am so looking forward to any additional science fiction romance Michelle Diener writes. I have reread them all and adored the Class 5 series!
