Slaying Dragons #3

The Occult Among Us: Exorcists and Former Occultists Expose the Nature of This Modern Evil

Rate this book
On the heels of the moral and spiritual collapse in the second half of the twentieth century, a new interest in spirituality has emerged and is overwhelming the world. However, this interest is not one which is leading to a resurgence of Christian faith and holiness. It is one in which man is infatuated with spirits, aligned with secret powers, inclined to secret rituals, and in love with superstition.Far too many Christians today are suffering and bewildered by the spread and appeal of the occult. Priests and parents alike are unsure how to address this temptation and devastation which pursues their children. The Occult Among Us seeks to fill the gap in knowledge and understanding by directly addressing many of these new movements, the dangerous social trends they are creating, and the challenges these present to the universal Church. In this book, the reader will technology functions as a highway for the spread of the occult. What modern witchcraft and Satanism really believe. The common beliefs that bind and motivate all forms of the occult. The dangers which even occultists admit are present in these practices. The real danger within common practices like the Ouija board, Reiki, and sage smudging ... among many other topics.Like The Rise of the Occult, this second volume is based around the same stories and experiences of sixteen former occultists, eight exorcists, seven parish priests, six Catholic families, and many others who have experienced firsthand the presence and dangers and reality of the modern-day resurgence of the occult. The time has come for all Christians to understand this threat more completely and to learn how they can protect themselves and society as a whole.~Charles D. Fraune is an author, teacher, and speaker with a Master of Arts in Theology and an Advanced Apostolic Catechetical Diploma. He is the author of the best-selling spiritual warfare books – Slaying What Exorcists See & What We Should Know and The Rise of the What Exorcists & Former Occultists Want You To Know, both of which have been endorsed by Bishop Athanasius Schneider, Bishop Joseph Strickland, and exorcist Msgr. Stephen Rossetti. Find him and his other publications at SlayingDragonsPress.

I've been seeing a lot more yoga and reiki being advertised and crystals being sold by a kid in lieu of a lemonade stand this summer in our nearby small midwestern town (~5000K).

In light of that, an interview with this author caught my eye and so I picked up "The Occult Among Us" (the third of his 3 books) because it was the only one I was able to listen to as an audiobook through my library. As I was listening and feeling like the first half was all a bit much for me, Emily Stimpson Chapman published an article on "Demons, Celebrity Exorcists, etc..." which made me think I should just hang up the phone on this one, but the shorter chapters in the second half was really what I was interested in , not out of curiosity, but by way of fortifying myself and preparing my kids to reject these things that have become so prevalent. I was never warned against Ouija boards and I played with one with a friend that was one of the scariest experiences of my childhood.

So, I feel conflicted about this book because I feel like there was a lot more info than was necessary - particularly for me - on some topics but it is also important. I, admittedly, haven't read his other books but would like to see something for parents (and teachers) who don't have a lot of time that covers all these topics in a way that warns about without getting quite so deep into the weeds about them.

Utterly chilling, but a book that I think every Christian needs to read. There is a ton of information here, and the book can be read straight through or chapter by chapter as the topics are relevant to you. I read it straight through. It's a heavy one, though, so I would like to warn you in advance to maybe prep something sweet and fluffy to read on the off-times. But, honestly, there was so much good information here. Eye-opening, terrifying, but excellent.

This was a powerful and insightful book by Charles Fraune! Included in this book are: Interviews with exorcists and former occultists, the power of Sacramentals such as the St. Benedict Medal and the Miraculous medal, the dangers of "games" like the ouija board, charlie charlie and bloody mary and how the demons can influence technology. This was overall a fantastic series that every Bishop, priest and layperson needs to read!

I randomly stumbled upon this audiobook on the hoopla app and I decided to listen to it. This is the third book in a series, but it can be read as a standalone–however I do hope to read the previous books in this series eventually. This was enlightening and had a great variety of sources. It was really the last 1 hour and 20 minutes of this audiobook that made me decide to give this book 5 stars instead of 4.

This review is long overdue. I keep thinking about it and realized I never actually put my thoughts in words. Please don’t mistake my tardiness as dislike, fellow readers. This is an another powerful book by Charles D Fraune. My apologies to the author for taking so long to do this.

You don’t have to read the Rise of the Occult before reading this one, but you will encounter some familiar people if you do, and that is part of what makes this such a powerful book.

Time and time again I was amazed at just how easily, how innocently some of the people discussed in the book made their way into the occult. How powerful their experiences were and are, and how hard they worked to leave it behind. Fraune did a fantastic job compiling these stories and writing this volume. The exorcists discussed in this book are priests I find myself growing in respect for. Their stories and comments only add to this book.

Furthermore, I was shocked to realize how many times I, myself, have encountered the occult, and how blessed I am to have not had any effects from it. My main experience was with Reiki in the search for healing and relief from chronic pain with a little bit of chakra work thrown in. I now understand my unsettled feeling after these sessions and why I never made further appointments. I have no doubt the Holy Spirit was working to protect me.

I highly recommend this book. As a Catholic, I am grateful to know more and also know prayers and actions I can take to further protect me and my loved ones. You don’t have to be Catholic to read this though.

I would like to thank the author for the copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
