I feel like when you leave NYC you’re supposed to join all the haters and be glad you’ve left the hell hole. That’s not me, I still love it and miss it almost daily. New York Nico’s was a great trip of nostalgia for me, and even a few heartbreaks for places I never knew existed, and won’t get to visit. Almost 30 years in NYC and there were still places to explore.
Anyway, I love guides like this. You get one interested and interesting person’s take on a place and you can dip in and out as you like. There are so many winning spots in this book and most are largely not on the instagramers’ hit list that makes visiting so many places annoying.
It has a great design that allows each featured business to really shine and I love that it’s in 4 color.
HarperCollins gave me this title for a review, but my opinion is all mine.
"From the “unofficial talent scout of NYC,” filmmaker, and social media icon New York Nico comes the only NYC guidebook you’ll ever need—a beautifully designed, photo packed celebration of the greatest city in the world, showcasing Nico’s top 100 New York institutions, shops, and eateries and the characters who shape them."
Let me start by saying I have unfortunately not been able to visit New York YET. I most certainly plan to, and this book only made me more excited for when I'm able to. This guide, far from being your typical tourist manual, offers a refreshingly offbeat, insider perspective of New York City. You could feel the authors love for the city that never sleeps through his writing. It is perfect for visitors and New Yorkers alike! New York Nico covered a wide range of places you must visit, from the must-see tourist spots to the hidden gems. I appreciated the back story he provided of the business owners I was introduced to while on the journey of reading his book. He wrote of them more as friends than as someone who had just met.
I found this guide exceptionally easy to read as it was broken down by boroughs and neighborhoods. It covered a wide variety of themes such as food, night life, and even some spots for the best "people watching." The photographs and illustrations that accompanied each location combined with the author's detailed writing truly immersed you at each stop.
Thank you Netgalley for an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
The only thing that would make this book better would be if it was twice the length. I got it as a Christmas gift and spent every morning for a week drinking my coffee and reading about New York. I enjoyed learning about the places I've frequented for years just as much as I loved learning about new-to-me treasures. I was genuinely sad when I read the last page.
Nico has followed in the footsteps of the many New Yorkers he features, and taken an existing genre (in this case travel guides) and made something unique and special that we didn't even know we needed.
Only reason it got four stars instead of five was because so many owners/employees of the places listed seemed to be such good friends of nico’s so i was skeptical that there could be a bias there
New York Nico's Guide to NYC is a comprehensive guide to iconic locations in NYC. Divided by borough, it covers a little bit of each corner of the city by a native New Yorker.
