Still Thinking in 3 Dimensions? There are no hiding places..... Faren, a shell-shocked Vietnam vet, and his wife, Janet, inherit an old country estate in Germany around the time that Faren’s company transfers him to the same area. The two soon discover that the coincidence is really too good to be true. Their home rests near a timeworn door into the earth that is poised to open, exposing all to a horde of four-dimensional beings. Soon the line between our reality and that other space-time will be blurred forever, leaving mankind to be consumed by shrill, shrieking terror.Only one man has the slimmest chance to save our planet and, even though he has no place to hide, he prefers to run.In the style of H.P. Lovecraft, Byron Craft brings the Cthulhu mythos and the Necronomicon back to life with "The Alchemist's Notebook" leading the reader through a terrifying Lovecraftian web of mystery, horror and apocalyptic doom.

It was decided that the best person to tell you about Byron Craft and “THE ALCHEMIST’S NOTEBOOK” project would be me…Byron Craft.

“THE ALCHEMIST’S NOTEBOOK” was originally a movie that was in preproduction several years ago titled, “The Cry of Cthulhu.” Unfortunately the project, like many good intentions, never came to fruition. My concept was an all new Cthulhu Mythos story to be put on film that would have done H.P. Lovecraft proud. At the time, there had been several poor attempts to place Lovecraft and his dreaded Necronomicon on the big screen. I had a notion to make an exciting, plus mind-boggling, Cthulhu movie that had the look and feel as if Lovecraft had stood behind the camera.

“THE ALCHEMIST’S NOTEBOOK” embodies the same vision in a literary format. I have endeavored to pen this Cthulhu Mythos novel as it may have been done if H.P. Lovecraft were alive in the 21st century. Nevertheless, “THE ALCHEMIST’S NOTEBOOK” consists of three separate narratives that link together a single story, where when one account leaves off, the other continues leading you, the reader, through a terrifying Lovecraftian web of mystery, horror and apocalyptic doom.

I have been known to refer to this work as “THE ALCHEMIST’S NOTEBOOK PROJECT,” because it is the first in a five novel mythos series dealing with mankind’s internal, as well as, outward struggle to control his own destiny while encountering malicious beings from another time and space.

I hope you will enjoy, in addition to being scared stiff, the first of my five part series…“THE ALCHEMIST’S NOTEBOOK.”

Farron Church inherits an old German castle at a lonely spot deep the Black Forest and moves in with his pregnant wife...what could possibly go wrong? Well, even more than you might expect; a haunted mansion would be a piece of cake by comparison. Walking dead, grotesque Pilot Demons and errant Nazis are literally the least of Church's problems. There are seriously big league creatures out there, and some epic encounters with the biggest of them.

Cry of Cthulhu is written as three overlapping narratives, seen from different viewpoints of characters caught up in a cosmic struggle between good and evil. The tale is inspired by (but goes far beyond) HP Lovecraft’s classic Call of Cthulhu. Craft has his own carefully-constructed take on the Mythos, including a brand new Old One. One of the highlights is a dizzying tour of the spot in the solar system where the losers in the last cosmic battle ended up.

The story structure gives ample opportunity for historical side trips to WWII and Vietnam, and there are buckets of Lovecraftian references thrown in. The action though is non-stop and there are creepy and gory sequences aplenty. If this was a movie, it would be praised for the quality of the CGI – all achieved here with nothing more than solidly-built prose.

Cry of Cthulhu is an exciting read and a highly entertaining addition to Mythos fiction.

A slow burn ending in a pyroclastic bonfire.

Almost entirely told in narration from the POV of three main characters, the story starts out with a steadily-building foundation till 20% in when it begins to burn hotter, then surges into overdrive at the 40% level to the heart pounding climax.

A mixed combination of H.P. Lovecraft's mythos with the author's unique addition/spin, the 4bk series begins in rip-roaring fashion that is sure to please. Don't give up with the slow pace of the seemingly irrelevant first 20%, it does build a firm foundation for the two main characters. Once past that point, the HPL mythos is firmly established and hard to put down from that point on.

A solid 4.5 stars.

If you are a person who likes the works of Lovecraft, especially the Cthulhu mythos, I think you will enjoy The Cry of Cthulhu. Every writer has his or her own style. Craft’s is a little different than Lovecraft’s, but strongly reminiscent of it. More important, Craft does an exceptional job of capturing the spirit and feeling of Lovecraft’s work, while also doing an excellent job of bringing the mythos into more recent times. I highly recommend The Cry of Cthulhu by Bryon Craft.

A wonderful novel that slowly switches through the various flavors of the cthulhu mythos(gothic horror inspired, pulp action, modern horror, etc) in a great way that really lends to the overall story.
Craft is great, and I highly recommend this and other writings of his.

This was great. If you like the H.P.L. Style of writing. THIS is for you. This book mixed many of HPL's books, plus a little on the house on the borderlands feel. Had a great time with it. Looking forward to the next in the series.

If you are a fan of cosmic horror, weird fiction and HP Lovecraft, you are already sold on this book since THIS IS FOR YOU! I loved it, loved the mix of war trauma with the Cthulhu mythos and a dash of the undead to make things even better. If there is a fault, it's the long segments of exposition, especially in the last third, that make the story crawl a bit. Still, a great horror read if you're a fan of the mythos, and horror in general.
