In a Nutshell: An informative and entertaining book offering you a multitude of reasons why you should “respect the insect.” Love the structure, the illustrations and the content. A couple of minor points could have been tackled better, but on the whole, definitely recommended to entomophiles as well as entomophobes.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bugs always get a bad rap. To a great extent, I can understand why. They seem creepy, they crawl in nooks and crannies and spring out unexpectedly, they bite, they sting, they fly too fast to be caught,… But bugs are also amazing!
Disagree?
Here’s a book that aims to get you to respect insects. I love that word choice: “respect”. The plan isn’t to make you love insects but to make you appreciate them. And hopefully, not swat or squash them anymore. (Except cockroaches and female mosquitoes! I permit you to go wild and attack them with gusto! 😬)
People don’t realise that that (a majority of) insects aren’t a nuisance. (Most of the times.) Insects have been on this planet for longer than humans, and even dinosaurs. They have survived extreme heat as well as cold. They can thrive in any kind of habitat. They can eat any type of food. They can fly as well as crawl. If there’s one thing insects can teach us, it is resilience.
We depend on insects for many things. We already know some products that come from insects, such as honey. But do we know how important insects are in providing us chocolate and coffee? Imagine our world without these two delectable treats! 😱
This book begins by explaining what an insect is. It then provides eye-opening facts about a whole array of insects. The content is organised into sections based on the functionality of the insects, such as cleaners, food makers, eco warriors and so on.
The focus isn’t just on well-known human helpers such as the various pollinators. The information tackles not just what insects contribute to our life directly but also how they impact our lifestyle indirectly. I liked how some infamous insects such as termites, wasps and mosquitoes make guest appearances, offering a justification for why they behave the way they do.
The book winds up with the impact of climate change on the insect world, and a few pointers about what children can do to “be a friend to insects.’
The page organisation is excellent. The whole space is illustrated and filled with myriad insects, and neat text boxes provide the information. The content seems a tad bit cluttered in the digital version, so the book will be best enjoyed through a physical copy.
This book aims at readers aged 7-10 years, but the complexity and range of the information makes it suitable to 11-14 year olds as well. Younger kids will enjoy the illustrations and some of the facts, but the rest might be a little difficult for them to comprehend completely. There is a glossary at the end for the trickier scientific terms, but this will work only for the older children.
The only thing I didn’t like was how the book glossed over the truly negative aspects, and I don’t mean topics such as poisonous insects. There has been a lot of cruelty involved in human utilisation of insects, especially historically, whether through the boiling of silkworm cocoons in water to collect the silk or the crushing of cochineal bugs to make red dye. But the book either doesn’t mention the wickedness of humans at all, or it makes it sound like the insect has made peace with the sacrifice as it benefited humans. This didn’t rub me the right way.
All in all, I mostly loved this book. It sticks to its core theme and provides valid reasons to respect insects for all they are and all they do. I hope little (and adult) readers read this and realise that (most) insects are our friends. And let’s face it, some of them are adorable! (Don’t believe me? Check this out: https://www.prevention.com/life/g3660...)
Definitely recommended to little bug lovers at home and also to classroom libraries. Also worth a try to those who are afraid of or disgusted by insects; may this book make you value the harmless little creatures.
4.25 stars.
My thanks to Quarto Publishing Group and NetGalley for the DRC of “Respect the Insect”. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for an ARC in exchange for my honest review!
I. Love. Bugs. I can remember being a little girl and waking up at 5am every day, giddy to go outside and look under rocks for bugs and worms. I have always been disappointed, however, to learn that the love of creepy crawlies is not universal. I can't tell you how excited I am that there's a book I can give all the little kids in my life to hopefully encourage them to respect and even perhaps admire beetles, ants, and moths.
Every page is illustrated with bright, cheerful, friendly depictions of all sorts of different species of insects. There's lots of information in the book too! Most of it would be too hard for a kid under about 7 or 8, but I think if you've got kids in that 7-10 age range, this would be a perfect gift. To be totally honest with you, I'm an adult woman, and I'm going to buy a copy of this for myself because I loved it so, so much.
This book made me happy, and when it comes out in July, it's going right on my coffee table!
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
Respect the Insect is an interesting picture book for children all about insects. I loved how encouraging this book was in its cute and fun format for children to pick up, listen to, and explore. There's so much information about insects in many different shapes and forms through this book, but not overloading the reader/listener and easy to dip in and out of, too. Children (and grown-ups) often get freaked out and scared of insects (myself included) but this book helps the learner understand how clever and useful insects are, how much they help us out and how much we need them.
Thanks NetGalley!
All I could think about was “how cool would this be as a kids cartoon show?” The colorful pages and bite sized info were so entertaining, I’m 23 years old but let me tell you something, I never knew half of the amazing things those insects offer us.
I would definitely still kill cockroaches.
Colourful children’s book about insects. Like many invertebrates, insects aren’t necessarily our favourite animals. Yuck, go away or ahh, comes to mind. Or a quick squash with a foot. But for some they are fascinating, there are so many unique often interesting species, and ultimately our world wouldn’t function without them. Here is a book that children can read, where the insects, presented as colourful drawings, are not so scary, but insects lives and roles are presented for youngsters to think about and learn. Maybe insects really get an undeserved bad name. Thank you to Quarto Publishing Group - Wide Eyed Editions and NetGalley for the ARC. The views expressed are all mine, freely given.
As an avid reader and a parent, I was delighted to receive an advance copy of Respect the Insect from Netgalley. This captivating children’s book is a colorful exploration into the fascinating world of bugs, beautifully illustrated to capture the imagination of readers of all ages.
One of the standout features of this book is its vibrant illustrations, which are not only visually appealing but also serve as an excellent educational tool for young readers. The colorful imagery truly brings the world of insects to life, making it accessible and engaging for children of various ages.
What I appreciated most about Respect the Insect is its ability to instill a sense of respect and admiration for these often misunderstood creatures. Through its pages, children not only learn about the different types of insects but also gain insight into their crucial role in our ecosystem. This book effectively emphasizes the importance of respecting and protecting these tiny yet essential beings.
This is a valuable addition to any child’s bookshelf, especially for those with a keen interest in bugs or nature. It not only entertains but also educates, sparking curiosity and fostering a deeper appreciation for the world around us.
Respecte les insectes !
Jules Howard et Gosia Herba
RÉSUMÉ
Qui mène le monde ? Les insectes !
Nous, les insectes, habitions cette planète bien avant les dinosaures, et sans notre présence, notre monde serait un endroit désolant. Nous contribuons à garder les cours d’eau propres et les sols sains. Nous pollinisons les fleurs, inspirons des inventions, collaborons avec les scientifiques et débarrassons l’environnement d’une quantité prodigieuse de caca ! Nous sommes très utiles et nous méritons votre respect. Vous découvrirez dans ce livre des insectes absolument incroyables qui aident au bon fonctionnement de ce monde.
Quel livre absolument merveilleux ! Encore une fois, le mélange entre l’album et le document est hyper gagnant. Le ton humoristique est également un grand plus.
Même si ce magnifique ouvrage déborde d’informations, il est hyper accessible aux enfants. La mise en page, les textes et les illustrations maintiennent l’attention des enfants page après page. Mais l’élément le plus important, selon moi, c’est que ce documentaire permet de démystifier la peur des insectes.
Un gros coup de cœur ! Les insectes n’ont maintenant plus de secrets pour nous !
Howard and Herba’s Respect the Insect looks at a wide range of insects and the beneficial roles they play, from helping to break down decomposing material, to pollinating plants and inspiring human inventions. Some of these insects will likely be familiar due to their beneficial nature, such as bees that pollinate and , while others many people might consider pests.
Some interesting facts:
*There is a species of South African dung beetle that can navigate by the stars.
*Clothes moths can digest heavy metals toxic to most animals, such as mercury and lead.
*Leaf-cutter ants farm mushrooms.
Highly recommended for children's libraries, classroom lessons, or for budding entomologists.
Cute. Quirky. Informative.
Loved this book, the illustrations are amazing, funny, quirky, adorable!
This really keeps the kiddos (and adults) interested throughout with the fun names like “garbage guzzlers” -black soldier fly and “fantastic farmers” -Ant. It’s also written as the insects POV so that really kept the kiddos throughly interested. We will definitely be picking up a copy as well as suggesting it to our local libraries!
Thank you NetGalley for the arc copy of this!
I thought this book was very well done! The illustrations are colorful and engaging for children. There were many categories of insects and a lot of unique, interesting facts. that should appeal to both children and adults alike. This book is well suited for older children (8 - 10 years old) And I could see this being a great lap book to be read together a bit at a time.
