This was such a sweet, magical story. The characters, the baking, the mysteries, the found family, and the wonderfully descriptive writing made this such an enjoyable ride. Andrew and Damon's relationship started off a bit rocky but they quickly realized that there is a thin line between being enemies and being lovers. They had great chemistry and were as sweet as Damon's baking.

We also meet lots of wonderful side characters. Usually meeting that many people in the first book of a series can be overwhelming but it didn't feel that way with this book. I loved all of them but my heart especially went out to Dmitri. I adored him and I hope that someday we can read his story.

This was way more than just a romance. This was falling in love with a town and its residents. I hope there is much more to come from Rosewood.

Thank you for allowing me to receive an ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

He’s making excuses. The real reason he wanted to stay in Damon’s bedroom has nothing to do with his health and everything to do with the softness on his face as he fell asleep. Andrew is in so much trouble.

He shouldn’t be this happy. Half a dozen kisses don’t mean anything. Some people kiss strangers that many times and sleep with them and wake up and go to work as though nothing has happened. Kisses shouldn’t feel life-altering. But these do, as though his life can be measured in before and after.

Andrew brushes a soft kiss to his cheek, handing him a parcel wrapped in black and white paper. “What’s this?”
“It’s nothing. I just thought—I don’t know what I thought.” Andrew blushes, colour rising high on his cheeks. Giving him a sideways glance, Damon pulls off the paper, revealing a simple, black picture frame. Flipping it over, he finds a tiny bouquet of pressed herbs beneath the glass. Witch hazel, ferns, flax, all the plants from his garden. And in the centre, the pale lavender of one of Hen’s roses.
“I know you replaced everything, but I thought it might be nice to have some of the plants that Jane destroyed. Maybe it was a bad idea.” Andrew runs a hand through his hair.
“It’s perfect.” Pulling Andrew closes, he kisses him softly.

This was such a sweet story full of beautiful turns of phrase and descriptive passages. The baking and magic sequences in particular were so vivid and felt like reading poetry. This author did a wonderful job of building the intriguing world of Rosewood with many compelling characters and dynamics between them and a Found Family trope was so well executed. On top of all this was a romance and several mysteries that made me want to keep reading to know more about all of them. Andrew and Damon in the perfect Enemies to Lovers relationship was well paced, sweet and a little spicy. The author fit an incredible amount into one book, and my only complaint is that I just wanted a little more of everything. I hope she continues this as a series because I’d love to see the characters and world developed more.

I received this copy as an ARC, and this is my honest review.

I loved spending time in Rosewood with all of these magical folks! The place and the people felt familiar and safe, and ohhhh all the baking was so delicious. The domesticity, all the magical elements, the snarky back and forth between Damon and Andrew—JAMS ALL AROUND!!

I’m a sucker for found family, friends as family, sweet treats, spicy moments, and a happy ending. This book had it all. Plus a CAT!

I’m so fortunate to have been given an ARC in exchange for my honest review. I’m excited for others to discover this lovely story.

2.5/5 I’m going counter to the prevailing opinion here, but while I liked the bones of this, it did not come together for me. (Or, more properly, it finally came together in the last chapter or two.) This might be a solely me thing, but what I was interested in seemed to keep mismatching with what the characters were interested in. Spoilers abound.

So first, it took me a while to warm up to the MCs. We get the “Andrew’s in it for the money, caused by semi-tragic backstory with Mom, done”. This doesn’t really get expanded on. This doesn’t get explained to Damon. (I know I’m supposed to sympathise with how he’s been raised and it’s been engrained in him, but it’s been five years since his Mom died, and the reason they kept moving is *because of his Mom*, so it was really hard for me not to just think, so … stay, because you’re an adult now and you want to.)

Their first encounter, Stacey’s dog destroys most of Damon’s garden, and while Andrew offers to help fix it, he makes no attempt to empathise or understand why that would be upsetting. We don’t meet his BF Richard until much later, and there’s nothing in these interactions to make me feel like they’re really friends or were working towards a good goal. Andrew is stubborn about this, and there’s pretty much no changes or realisations for 90%+ of the book. (Or he just keeps pushing realisations away? He feels trapped, he even admits it’s a trap of his own making, but it doesn’t feel like he’s looking for solutions.)

I’m a planner, so this might be where I just couldn’t turn it off and suspend disbelief. When we first meet Stacey and Andrew, we learn that she can burn water and has never baked, but her dream is to open a bakery. Andrew makes this happen for her with his own over-extended money and with so little investigation or research that they don’t realise until they get there that there’s already a bakery in the building. But whatever, it’s fine. Eventually it becomes clear that this is all okay because “magic”, but really? Andrew knows nothing about magic, but never once is there concern that maybe he’s setting up his sister to fail? (When at the same time, there’s this whole backstory of her depression caused by the last time she lost a job.) And Stacey remarks at one point that she had no idea this would be exhausting. I think we’re supposed to understand that this is actually because she’s unknowingly using magic, but seriously? She opened her own small business where she is the sole employee responsible for all baking, cooking, selling, clearing, cleaning, marketing, admin, etc., and she’s … surprised that it’s tiring. Right.

Meanwhile, Andrew is determined to sell the building, and at no point does it occur to him that the new owner might, I don’t know, tear down the building and kick his sister out? We learn really late that the other tenants have a 50-year-lease, but how could this not cross his mind before the very end of the book. (Did he write the same clause into the contract for his sister? I hope so, it’s never mentioned.)

Then we’ve got Damon, the de-facto leader and carer of the group. He’s the teacher now that Hen is gone. Except, he does almost no teaching. We get introduced to Dmitri early as an out-of-control magic teen who needs to be taught. Damon agrees he must be taught. And then … nothing. The fact that Dmitri is scared of Damon is brought up. Do we investigate why? Nope. Stacey turns out to be a witch and is hurting people accidentally. Damon eventually tells her, but nothing beyond the basics so she hopefully won’t hurt anyone again. Then we learn that not only could she be asked to leave, she could be stripped of her magic, and he finally makes a bit more of an effort to actually teach her. But he should have known all those facts the whole time. One of the other magical beings loses all their magic thanks to Stacey’s accident. We read that Damon’s “tried everything” to help her, but we see none of it, so it feels that mystery is just left by the wayside too, at least from a reader perspective. Eventually, we’re told “oh, just wait for it to come back”. Oh, is that a thing? Apparently. I guess this explains why no one was as freaked out as I was or thinking that we really seriously needed to get the out of control magical beings under control asap.

So we don’t go down the Dmitri mystery. We barely do any teaching with Stacey. We’re bitter that Andrew is selling the building but make no effort to tell him the truth or give him a way to see why the building is important. There’s a disconnect between the Hen that Andrew and Stacey knew versus the Rosewood crew, but Damon spends most of the book thinking they miss her and don’t want to talk about that, while Andrew is bitter and doesn’t want to talk about that, so we don’t investigate *that* mystery. (Also, Hen seems to have “just known” one of her grandchildren was magical and one wasn’t. So she left one a (magical) cookbook and one the building. With no explanation and apparently no idea this might cause trouble or confusion.)

We get a couple of dates between the guys, mostly sex when things are going “well”, but because Damon is hiding so much and Andrew is so insistent on going and selling, it doesn’t feel like they’re really getting to know one another or deepening a relationship. I really thought that Andrew would learn sooner about magic, but it’s the big shocker reveal at the very end.

I wanted to know more about magic.
Why is it so often in craft (baking, tea, soap, etc.)? It seems at the beginning that this is how it has to be done, but later it becomes clear that’s not the case. I think this is a set-up for a new series, but I wanted to learn a lot more about it now. I liked the set-up and the world-building that I saw, the idea that this was a sanctuary for magical beings and witches. I like the solution for the building moving forward. I was intrigued by all the characters, but with 50% of the book in the POV of someone who doesn’t know the big secret, we don’t get to do much with them. I think this could be promising as the universe expands.

I received an ARC from GRR. This is my honest review.

This book hooked me with talk of a bakery and magic in a small town. This is also a new-to-me author and the start of a new series. I am the type of reader that picks up on small details, so I initially wasn’t sure how this book would play out when in the first scene Andrew’s sister, Stacey, is actively polishing her nails and then immediately runs her hands through her hair to discuss its color. Those types of continuity issues can set the mood for a book so early on, but it did then smooth out regarding details like that.

This Sweet Magic was a great, cute, spicy gay romcom. I love fantasy (magic, etc), enemies to lovers and smut. This is all of that in one! The main characters both have their own issues and like most stupid boys, just don’t know how to communicate. Add in a bit of baking, a dash of drama and whole lot of different colored hair, and you’ll find This Sweet Magic a fun read.

This story has all the magic and goodness and home you could possibly ask for. I loved Damon and Andrew, even if they are both a little too stubborn for their own good. I loved the characters and the little haven they have created for themselves in Rosewood. This story is all about learning what is really important in life and it’s ok for your priority to change. Also circumstances may be way different than what you believed to be true. This is a wonderful little slice of low angst magical happiness and I can’t recommend it enough!

I enjoyed this sweet fluffy read with a little angst, low/medium steam and lots of love. Rosewood is a sanctuary for people with magic looking for a place to call their own. Andrew has never felt a sense of family and belonging so when his grandmother leaves him a building in her will his plan is to fix it up and sell it. With financial security maybe he would feel settled. Damon is the resident baker of the building and a witch. He is unsure of Andrew and his intentions but their connection finds a way! They have fabulous chemistry but horrible communication skills. Lots of misunderstandings ensue but with a little magic, found family and love we get an adorable HEA . I absolutely adore this book. From the very beginning I was sold. The characters, main and supporting, everyone adds something special to this story. I love the magic idea, it’s fascinating, the good versus the bad, with good winning, classic but never disappointing. The m/c’s easily win your heart from the get go. Their beginning animosity is perfect especially as it morphs into sexual tension. As the relationship blossoms into more I was drawn in even further, happily so. Simply excellent story, well told and well done in every way. I loved every minute inside Rosewood. I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book.

I received an advanced review copy of This Sweet Magic in exchange for a fair review.

A soft, sweet romance with a hint of magic, This Sweet Magic is a deliciously easy read that I managed to devour in just a few sittings.

The characters have great chemistry and the world building and lore are handled extremely well considering the book is only just over 300 pages long. It could stand to go a little deeper at times, but for a warm, fluffy romance it was perfectly fine.

I would say the ending felt slightly rushed in patches and the epilogue a little too sickly sweet for me, but the story was enjoyable nontheless.

Okay so I'm surprised that this is the author's debut novel, it was really good. So, we have Andrew who along w/his sister have been struggling all their lives. As they were growing up, per their mother, their grandmother appeared not wanting to help them & so they kept moving from place to place when she is unable to pay the rent. Damon is Rosewood's resident witch & Andrew's grandmother was his mentor. I liked the fact that you could tell a witch by their hair color, that was kind of cool. When Hen dies, she leaves Andrew the building that Damon has his bakery in. All Andrew cares about is fixing it up & selling it. His BFF, Richard is really a piece of work & I disliked him from the time he stepped on page. He has a project in mind & needs the capital that Andrew will get from the sale of the building. What Andrew doesn't know is that Hen was a witch holding Rosewood together & protected. I loved watching Andrew grow and when he finds out the dept of his mother & what she's done, he does the right thing and stands up for what he wants. I am looking forward to more from this author.

"This Sweet Magic" by Kit Olmstead is a delightful concoction of sweetness and magic from a new author I already can't wait to read more from.

The heart of the story lies in the evolving relationship between Andrew and Damon, which unfolds amidst the backdrop of a charming small town. Their journey from adversaries to lovers is both tumultuous and tender, with their chemistry as delightful as Damon's confections.

My favorite part of this book was its rich cast of side characters, each adding depth and mystery to the town without being overwhelming. Among them, Dmitri shines as a standout, leaving me eager to explore his story in the future.

While the story excels in creating a sense of found family and community, I wished for higher stakes towards the end to amplify the emotional payoff. Nonetheless, Olmstead's wonderfully descriptive writing kept me hooked until the end.

More than just a magical romance, "This Sweet Magic" is a love letter to small-town life and its inhabitants. With its endearing characters and immersive setting, it's a tale that lingers long after the final page. I can't wait for more adventures from the enchanting town of Rosewood.

The idea of a magical neighborhood in the city of Vancouver, British Columbia is original. The people who live there, colorful. The book is an absolute delight.
Andrew inherits a Victorian age building with stores on the bottom and apartments on top. He needs to flip and sell it to get seed money for a business startup. Damon, a witch, infuses magic into the muffins and pastries that get sold in his bakery. The two meet, clash and become adversaries to lovers.
Damon offers Andrew something he's never had, permeance. If Andrew is brave enough to take it.
There's lots of found family, acceptance and love in the Victorian building that is the magical anchor to the community that offers sanctuary to those that need it.
This is a quick read with lots of fun, lots of angst. The sexy times are there, but its the story line which drives the book. This is a comfy story, a bedtime read. The title isn't the only thing magical about this book.
This is a new author and a wonderful first book. Have to wonder what's going to come next.

I believe This Sweet Magic is a debut for this author. It is the first book in a new series. I’m so glad I read this. I love finding new authors to enjoy.
Meeting all the new and exciting characters living in Rosewood was a joy. The author's approach to witchcraft and the paranormal is well thought out and easy to follow. I am curious about the secondary characters that supported the main characters and moved the storyline along. I think their stories will be just as interesting as this one with Andrew and Damon.
The premise is like something out of a Hallmark movie (which I like) but fresh and unique in its implementation.
Their backstories add weight to how they react to those around them and how they want their lives to be due to those life experiences. I found myself wanting to grab them up and hug them till they were all better.
I fell in love with Damon and Andrew and loved watching them grow closer to each other. Their romance and sexy times are satisfying, and their HEA is believable.
I look forward to more from this author.

When Andrew unexpectedly inherited a building, he thought all his problems would disappear. Instead, they multiplied. In fact, he found himself on a rocky road which could end in love. Unfortunately, Andrew and Damon’s rocky road was extreme to say the least. Between a dog, a cat, mysteries, magic, baking with a few surprises, found family, and secrets, these two had some trouble finding their magic. With a little help, they found that magic only to lose it. There were so many colorful side characters willing to help, or not, as the case may be. They just had to get beyond all those issues, some of which were not necessarily bad.

This is a delightful beginning to a new series set in Rosewood. It filled with many kinds of magic. It was well-written and had more than a few surprises. There are quite a few residents who could use their own road to love, undoubtedly rocky as well. I look forward to more stories set in Rosewood.

This book was, as the title and cover lead one to expect, sweet. I enjoyed reading it and expect others will, too. I kept wanting it to go a little deeper, though. The main and secondary characters were interesting, and I wanted to know more about them and their wants/needs/fears. Overall, everything just felt less meaningful than I would have liked.

The choice of third-person present POV took a bit of getting used to. I often see present tense for first-person POV, but it felt odd in third person. Not that that makes it wrong or bad, just somewhat distracting.

Despite my quibbles, this was an enjoyable story, and I expect this author has much more in store for readers.

My thanks to Gay Romance Reviews for an advance copy of this book.

I read this book as an ARC and received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

I loved This Sweet Magic! Kit did a great job of worldbuilding, and created a cozy, safe and magical community that is as much of a character as the people who live within it. I'm a sucker for Enemies to Lovers, and Damon and Andrew delivered on that trope very nicely indeed. There's a moderate level of angst and some childhood trauma, but most of the book is sweet, fluffy and just an all around delight to read. It's not what I would consider a high heat m/m romance, but it is sexy and the unresolved sexual tension in the first 3rd of the book is really well done.

I hope to see Kit exploring more stories in and around Rosewood in the future!

I fell in love with Rosewood, the town almost as much as I did the couple in this story. I cannot wait to learn details about many more of Rosewood's residents and see "outsiders" like Andrew come in and fall under its spell. You can blame lots of TV movies from the 70s, but I've always been a fan of the story where one character comes into a quaint, magical place and wants to transform it in some way commercially either by sales or development but then falls in love with a resident and then the town. Here, Andrew comes in all gung ho to sell the building he's inherited, take the money and get back to his "real" life. He doesn't count on Damon and Rosewood and the effect they'll have on him.

What a well written, enthralling book. I wanted Rosewood to be a real place.

I loved the characters...except for Richard (who was the worst best friend ever) and pitied Andrew's mother.

Dimitri is a sweet heart and I loved how strong Stacey became as the story progressed.

My favorite was Damon. His singular focus on protecting the town and the inhabitants of the magical section.

Poor Andrew had the worst of everything...until he embraced Damon and the knowledge they shared...all for the betterment of Rosewood, and ultimately for their own happiness and future.

It's too bad Hen didn't share more while she was alive!

Inheritance is an interesting thing as Andrew learns when he is left property by his estranged grandmother. Like so often happens his goal is to get in, sell it and move on and do with the proceeds what he would. However, he did not count on meeting Damon and over time learning that there was more at this unexpected property to want to hold on to than to discard. This was such a lovely story about finding love in a place where it was least expected and learning that the good fortune that he was looking for was not where he expected it to be.

I love finding new to me authors. In this case the cover stopped my scrolling and the blurb hooked me. I find it exciting to see an author’s take on the paranormal. Rosewood and its community had me intrigued. Granted I figured out the Stacey thing and suspected the situation with Dimitri I still couldn’t see how things with Andrew and Damon would resolve. I adored the side characters except for Damon’s mom and Richard. Of course I had to check out the author’s website and subscribe to their newsletter. I’m going to need all the latest information on Rosewood. I am so glad I requested this arc from GRR. One of the best new authors I’ve come across in a long time.

This is a beautifully atmospheric, delightfully sweet story where the setting and supporting characters add vibrancy, light, and magic to the central romance. Andrew and Damon’s connection may be one of the gentlest enemies to lovers trajectories I’ve ever seen— there are some fraught moments but there’s an undercurrent of kindness and care throughout. Everything and everyone is just a little too good to be true, in the best possible ways, and it’s an idealized, idealistic, and charming read because of that. Well worth a try.

What a sweet, magical story. I loved the magic element. And the baking, oh my. My mouth watered with all the descriptions of what Damon was baking. I loved how protective Damon was of the neighborhood and its' inhabitants. All the characters had their own voices, so it made it easy to distinguish who was who. I loved the airport scene. I won't say more about that. The end of the epilogue was a little cheesy. Overall, a great story and I'm looking forward to continuing this series.

I love the premise of the story and it really did come to life through the pages......loved the MC's and the neighbourhood. Magic folk hiding in the human world....clueless human....what could go wrong?! Plenty, obvioulsy - the story captured my attention and I couldn't put it down. This will tug on your heart-strings as well as wanting to give Andrew a good shake or two...sheesh !! Sweet, romantic and low angst - great story and look forward to more in this world.

This Sweet Magic is a sweet romance brewed with the perfect amounts of enemies-to-lovers, magic, found family, snark, and baking. The side characters are all engaging, especially Dmitri. I hope we get to see more of him in this series. There’s a gentle kindness throughout the town and the people who live there that I enjoyed very much. The story is well-paced and I love this author’s writing style. Highly recommend!
