Some older mixed reviews for a previous edition made me cautious, but I’m really glad I gave this book a shot. This updated version is actually really solid.

It explains everything in a super simple way without feeling dumbed down. If you’re brand new to chess, it walks you through everything—how the pieces move, the basic rules, and then gradually gets into tactics and strategy like forks, pins, openings, etc.

What I liked most is how easy it is to follow. A lot of chess books get confusing pretty quickly, but this one keeps things clear and well-structured. The examples help a lot too—I could actually understand what was going on instead of just memorizing moves.

You can tell it’s been improved a lot. It feels more polished and better organized than I expected from a beginner book.

It’s definitely aimed at beginners, so if you already know a lot about chess it might feel a bit basic. But if you’re just starting (or teaching a kid), this is honestly a great place to start.

Overall, really good value and a helpful intro to chess 👍

Good chess intro for absolute beginners

At first I found all the exclamation points off-putting, but after a while I figured he was mostly writing for a younger audience. Otherwise, as a novice chess player I have found this book very useful in explaining all the basics such as board setup, opening moves, tactics vs strategies and more. Having only played a handful of games, I already have a better understanding of my weaknesses and how to remedy them after reading this book. It's on Kindle Unlimited right now but well worth the purchase price.

This book is a good book for anyone wanting to learn how to play chess. It taught me all about how the pieces move and basic rules of the game. It also gives chess opening moves and suggestions as well as how to respond to opponents. I just don’t think I will continue playing chess but it was fun to learn as I have never played before.
