I have to admit that I haven't read much contemporary poetry since my time as an undergrad, but I really enjoyed this one.
Right from the text in place of the dedication at the beginning and the (first) table of contents, I knew I was in for an entertaining, stimulating, and intellectually provocative ride and Lama didn't disappoint.
My two favorites were "Capitalist Anxieties" and "Bell of Cultivation," but the poems are so strong and varied that I imagine that every reader has different favorites.
The concrete poems in Roman and Tibetan scripts are appealing works of visual art, but more importantly, they don't feel gimmicky or out of place, because they hold their own as poems as well. I'm quite frankly shocked at how she pulled this off, because I never enjoyed concrete poems before and didn't know that it was even possible to produce works of this quality in the medium. But she did.
All this is to say that this is a damn fine poetry collection. I had a lovely afternoon on the first reading and now, flipping back through as I write this review, I look forward to what I'll no doubt discover in the future.
A worthy addition to my shelf. Highly recommended.
Disclosure: I had a few beers with the author after class 10 years ago. It was fun.
