"My house is a mess, my underwear is mixing with hers in the laundry, and my safe, quiet haven now smells of burnt candles and her."
Indy
Being the founder of a non-profit and keeping it going is my only focus right now. I don't have time for distraction–men, my health, my friends–all of it takes a back seat to me keeping this going. I've lived by other people's rules for too long, I am ready to break out on my own, and I'll prove to everyone I can do it. The Crown Project helps sick children and their families find some happiness during hard times, and I am committed to making it happen. If I can't have my own, I'll give someone else a fairytale. The only man I'd want is off-limits to me anyway. He's the meanest, grumpiest, and, unfortunately, the sexiest man I know. He also works with my brother. So there's that. I'll always be a supporting character, never the princess. My life just won't let me. It's impossible.
Derek
Without routine and order, the only thing left is chaos. Chaos leaves room for disorder and unhappiness. And that leads to betrayal. Never again will I allow that to happen. I am steady, focused, and at the top of my game as a tattoo artist at Hel's Ink. I am established, successful, and there is nothing that happens in my life that I don't allow. And then there is Indy. She is inescapable - a whirlwind of kindness and beauty and goodness. Everything about her is impossible. Left with no choice but to help her out of a challenging situation. I soon regret my decision and the insanity that comes with it. I let her in. Into my home and my life. But never– never- into my heart. There's no such thing as fairytales, and love stories don't really exist. But when everything changes, I wonder if maybe I've found a little piece of chaos I can live with.
Crowned the Queen of Banter, DJ Krimmer is known through the community for her witty, smart mouthed characters.
In her books, representations of the imperfect sides of life are not hidden in the shadows, they're front and center, a reminder that everyone deserves to be a princess and have their happily ever after.
*** This is my original review for the first version of this book; I'm reading the revamped new version, and I'll be back with a new review 🤍 ***
3.5*
Did I just inhale this book on the release day??? Yes, yes, I did! 🥹 My new favorite series, this one, just love this gang. Can't wait for the next book.
Derek, Derek, Derek .... he pissed me off a few times, especially when he knew he behaved like an ass but still could not gather himself together and apologize, like right then and there. I understand he's a grump, and he keeps to himself, but this behavior works when you're 20, not over 40...
It’s always the quietest and most stand-offish ones!
Once again DJ Krimmer has flawlessly told a story that seamlessly grips you from beginning to end. Once beginning this series it’s hard to put them down. You just want to read more from this entire group of characters. The interactions, obstacles, friendships, and relationships are just downright amazing.
- Sworn off relationships - Sunny vs grumpy - afraid to commit
Format: Audiobook Narrators: Mollie Stark and Joe Arden Genre: Contemporary Romance
I have no clue how I like each book better than the last. It's weird because I spent more than half of this book hating Dereck. Like, I wanted to punch him in the face... repeatedly, but yet, he's now my new favorite out of the Hel's Ink crew. I didn't think anyone could be better than Ash or Atlas or even Fox... but here we are, with the grumpy and rude Dereck being absolutely adorable. I think it's all of his quirkiness (and germaphobe behavior) that makes him loveable because it damn sure isn't his sparkling personality.
I'm not going to type out the summary of this book / story BUT... In the end - I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED Indy and Derek together 💜
Do I recommend? 1000% Yes!

Hel's Ink is one of my absolute favorite series! I absolutely love DJ Krimmer's writing style, plots, and relatable characters. I really enjoyed Derek and Indy's story. I love Indy's personality. Indy is a positive, caring person and always tries to make everyone around her feel good. I absolutely adore Derek, I love his grumpy attitude and how he eventually let Indy into his heart and how he would be there for Indy no matter what. I was absolutely shocked to figure out that Derek is also connected to DJ Krimmer's other book Stray! I had to sit down and take that in because I also loved reading Stray as well.
If you haven't read either Derek or Stray, I highly recommend going to read them!
REVAMP READ: Honestly there's not much more to say than what I did in the OG review. Derek is still by far my top tier favorite of ANY book. the misunderstood and broken pieces of his soul truly speak out to me, and I love the character growth with him. He knows right away when he messes up, but he just can't help but fight his feelings. Indy is everything he needed, whether he knew it or not. The extra scenes were worth the wait for the revamp, however... I will never ever never ever EVER get enough of Derek. I can't wait to see him and Indy in future releases. <3
OG READ: Spice: 2/5 Plot: 5/5 Tropes: grumpy/sunshine, past traumas, forced proximity, age gap, maaaybe a little daddy/praise? lol. iykyk Again, and I cannot say this enough... another masterpiece that will both destroy you and put your glass pieces back together. Derek was my long-awaited book, and it did not disappoint. It was better than I could have ever imagined. The brokenness between both Indy and Derek were heartbreaking and so relatable. The two together... *chefs kiss*. The character growth between them individually as well!! I love visiting Hels Ink and I'm so sad were over halfway. I'm excited to jump into the Rowe brothers as a little spin off series, I'm SO happy about that. There's so much I love about this book, I cannot even put it all into words. Thanks for writing this whole series, DJ, you are amazing.
Derek was hurt in the past, and doesn’t want to be in a relationship with anyone. He works at Hel’s Ink with Fox, Atlas, and Ash, and Ash has a sister Indy. Indy is sweet, funny, and is always looking on the bright side. The attraction between them is intense, but Derek won’t cross line, because he knows he will be destroyed. Indy has an illness and doesn’t want to be in a relationship because she doesn’t want to be a burden. They get close and things are getting harder to fight. Can Derek and Indy get over the issues and be together? Great characters and storyline Highly recommended Amazing book. I love Derek and Indy and their character development is amazing. Great supporting characters and found family. I couldn’t put this book down. Love the Hel’s Ink series. Check your trigger warnings.
Another perfectly written book by the incredible DJ Krimmer. She just has a way with her storylines and writing style that makes you fall even more in love with her books.
And this book portrays that from beginning to end.
Derek might be my fav so far by this author and I can’t recommend her books enough.
I just absolutely love every book in this series! I have made such a connection with all of the characters and I love seeing all of my favorite characters grow in each book! Derek is a grumpy man who doesn’t want to get close to anyone or love anything. Indy is a bubbly woman who deals with so much but always has a positive attitude towards life. They try their hardest to not be attracted to each other but after moving in with Derek, Indy chips away at his hard exterior and helps him learn how to love!
If you love: -Grumpy/Sunshine -Age Gap -Chronic illnesses rep -Forced Proximity -Praise and spice You need to read this one!
I was stoned out my mind when I read this, don’t remember much, but I liked it enough to finish, so there’s that.
Derek was great when he wasn’t trippin. His character growth was much needed and enjoyable to witness. Indy was super sweet, exactly what was needed to combat Derek’s trauma turned anger.
These books carry a common theme, which isn’t exactly a negative, however, if the series is read consecutively, it would feel repetitive. I think I’ll take a break here.
Derek and Indy’s story was beautiful when living with a chronic disease/Illness with no cure what Indy lives with is very real. It’s not only hard on the person but the people who love and care for you. The fake smiles and the I am goods are real. Finding that person who truly wants to love and support you is a blessing. This book made me laugh and cry and reflect on my own chronic illness.
They both helped each other and it was beautiful such an amazing book. This was my first book by DJ but now I want to go back and read the rest of the series!
Now that I’ve had the chance to listen to the ALC of this audiobook, this has officially been bumped to a 5 star read for me. The narrators did a FANTASTIC job and brought the story to life for me, making the characters even more relatable.
DJ can do no wrong!

7/15:24: I just finished reading the ARC for the extended version of this book and I really enjoyed it. I have to say the thing I loved most about this book though was Indy. I don’t think there’s ever been an FMC sweeter than her.
While I know this book focuses a lot on the MS representation, I also personally appreciated the representation of the darkness Indy experiences. As a reader, it made me feel seen.
This book made me laugh so much and made me understand why DJ Krimmer is known as the Queen of Banter. I also shed a few tears.
Hels Ink has been one of my favorite stories of 2024 and I’m loving reading them as DJ rereleases them all. Looking forward to Stevie in August!
• Forbidden Romance • Age Gap (20 years) • Grumpy x Sunshine • Multiple Sclerosis Rep • Found Family • Banter • MMC: Tattooed, Protective, Cinnamon Roll for her
My Thoughts: This story follows Derek Rowe and Indy Johnson. It’s the fourth book in the series that starts with Fox and they are all available on Kindle Unlimited. Derek was a lot slower for me to love due to his broody nature, quick temper and just doing d*ckish things for the first half of the book. However you get glimpses of Derek, a 45 year old, getting all flustered like a teenage boy whenever Indy enters the room, it starts in the previous few books too, and it’s bloody adorable. I adore each one of the books in this series and have fallen in love with each and every MC, this one is no different. DJ Krimmer KNOWS how to write a man to!
This story starts with a prologue giving us some backstory on the quick tempered and broody Derek, and what led him to being the way he is. We also get to meet his 3 brothers and sister throughout this book, which is now a spin off series and I’m really excited for. Chapter one then picks up a few months after the end of Book Three, Ash. Indy is Ash’s little sister, we got to know her better in book three, where we learn she is living with Multiple Sclerosis. She is fighting a constant battle throughout this story, hating to be a burden to those she loves and also wanting the freedom to be an adult. This book is a journey, it’s raw, it’s about healing and learning to accept yourself and accept the help of those around you who love you.
These books are so unique and I love that each MC is battling some disability or trauma and DJ Krimmer does it with so much grace and respect. She writes it into her stories so well and you know she’s done her research in order to give these characters life and do the people actually living with these ailments justice. Mixing it in with banter and kicking your legs goodness that I just can’t get enough of. I have loved every moment reading this series so far, they battle their demons and you’re rooting for their HEA, which is always beautiful, rewarding and fulfilling 🫶🏻

I read this book as an audiobook via Audible, read by Christian Leatherman and Paige Reisenfeld.
Derek and Indy's story is a perfect example of fighting reality. Derek could not help himself but find out everything he could about her condition which should have been his first clue. But we know middle aged men with unhealed emotional wounds don't pick up on these things quickly. Indy wasn't much better, having convinced herself that she would never condemn someone to a life of caring for her, believed she would never fall in love. Joke's on her. You can't control, that darlin'.
Krimmer does a decent job of adding the Virginia farm to the Hel's Ink world and immersing us further into their environment without info dumping or leading readers by the nose, especially those who have read the previous three books. The storytelling was the same realism that I loved in the previous books as well.
I didn't see a couple things coming for plot points so it proves that Krimmer is capable of throwing curve balls even four books into a series. I was mad one day when I couldn't get back to it the next day and fell asleep too early, taking too many calendar days to devour this one.
Definitely enjoyed this book. "Darlin'" had me every time.
Derek is Book 4 in The Hel's Ink Series. This book is hands down my favorite so far. Indy is a founder of a non-profit and keeping it going is her only focus. She doesn't have time for a distraction—men, her health or her friends. Her plan is to get the Crown Project up and running so that it will help sick children and their families to find happiness during hard times. Indy wants to give someone else a fairytale. The one man Indy wants is Derek. When she ends up needing Derek's help everything changes.
Most recently I listened to the audiobook and it's phenomenal. Performed in duet narration by Joe Arden and Mollie Stark. These two were perfect as Derek and Indy. Joe and Mollie embodied their characters and their voices sounded so good together. Joe does a great southern accent. He portrayed Derek's grumpiness, his no nonsense attitude as well as Derek's need for order. Mollie gives an amazing performance. Indy suffers from multiple sclerosis. Despite her daily health struggles, she is such an optimistic person. Mollie exuded Indy's positivity and sunny, bright disposition. Her energy was so contagious. Joe and Mollie bring out all the emotions with their expressive tones. They elevated the story and portray the ups and downs of Derek and Indy's love story. What a compelling and unforgettable performances by these two. Truly amazing!

Thank you to bluenoseaudio for my ALC in exchange for an honest review.
The audiobook is narrated in duet by Mollie Stark and Joe Arden. And it’s brilliant!
Tropes Age gap (25 / 45 - 20 years) Grumpy/sunshine Forced proximity Found family Tattoo artist / charity owner Disability rep (MS) Mental health rep (depression/anxiety)

I loved this story. It’s messy, emotional, and so full of heart. I am not normally a huge fan of the age gap trope but this book handles it perfectly. It’s not cringy it’s an emotional journey.
Derek is a grumpy, broody tattoo artist with serious trust issues, and Indy is pure chaotic sunshine, living with MS and still fighting every day to help others.
Their love is not easy, not clean, and definitely not simple — but it’s worth every single fight, tear, and misstep.
This series has incredible disability and mental health rep. I am so grateful for that.
I swear these books get better and better the further I go.
Being told Derek could rival Atlas. I didn’t believe it.
Mannnn. This book was amazing . Derek’s backstory gripped me and I was instantly invested, and understood his behavior. Indy’s story and her masks coming off broke me to my soul. I loved these two so much my heart ached!!
Joe and Mollie did an incredible performance. Every emotion was delivered with absolute perfection.
I don't even know where to begin! This book had me feeling EVERYTHING! I laughed hysterically at the banter, I sobbed at the emotional journey of the characters, and I was beyond hot over the chemistry.
This series has me in a chokehold but I think Derek and Indy have stolen my heart. 💜
I DEVOURED this book in a day, I couldn't wait for their story!
This book had everything. Plot, spice, laughter, and banter. This is my first book by D.J. Krimmer and I can't wait to go back and read her others.
Derek and Indy's relationship was so much fun to watch grow into what it ends up as. The banter, the nicknames, the stuff they go through made me not want to put this book down. I absolutely loved it.
I didn't think I could love any of these charterers more than I love Atlas...and along comes Derek!! He is funny when with Indy; she brings out the best in him. It is difficult to read Indy's struggles but Derek takes it all in his stride. I also love Ash's reaction to Derek and Indy.
I received a copy of this book from the author for an honest review.
I was really anticipating the release of Derek’s book to learn more about him and I was not disappointed in the slightest! The push and pull between Derek and Indy and how their relationship grew over time was a beautiful story. I was smiling like a child in a candy store at many moments!

WOW!! This Series is very real. Indy is in the early stages of MS who is our sunshine heroine. Her brother works with Derek is a much older grumpy tattoo artist who works at Hel’s Ink.
You will laugh and cry. Mollie and Joe were outstanding as Indy and Derek
I am so in awe of this book. I received it as an ARC and haven't read the other books in the series when I started it, but will definitely be going back and starting from the beginning now. I love the way the author writes about disabilities and the struggles of these characters. Its so realistic and really makes you step back and reflect on the hardships people may have that you never realize because of the masks they wear.
The banter is everything and entirely realistic. I loved the slow burn of this book and how relatable all of the characters are. (Plus Grumpy Sunshine is my favorite trope-- EVER) Ms. Krimmer could not have written better characters for this!
Here D.J. goes with another banger! When I couldn’t think of any of Hel’s Ink men that could get any hotter, here comes Derek with his grumpy sweet demeanor. The way his love for Indy develops over the book and the character growth behind him, I was hooked! The angst and tension in this book is mind blowing. I wanted to be Indy’s best friend as soon as she was introduced so I was so excited for her to get her own story. All in all I didn’t want Derek to end.
