Lela Talbot works on a long haul ore freighter, traveling between the Cloud and Earth. When someone aboard the ship tampers with the engines, Lela is called in to help—along with D-084, the cool, collected, kind android that Lela has been crushing on for weeks.
While saving the day, it becomes clear that D returns Lela’s interest. But as things heat up between them, Lela fears exposing her feelings to an android who can’t possibly return them.
When their saboteur returns, jeopardizing their trip home, D and Lela will have to work together to solve the mystery. Can she keep it casual, or will she give in to her love for an android who can’t love her back?
Lyonne Riley writes super steamy monster romance, fantasy romance, and sci-fi romance. She lives in the middle of nowhere with her spouse and two dogs, writing spicy fairy tales.
Is there anything Lyonne can't write that I won't immediately fall in love with??
Can't say I've read many Android romances but I was so excited when I heard Lyonne was writing one and I was not disappointed! I'm obsessed. This romance was so sweet. Spice happened fairly quickly, but it didn't feel like insta-lust since both characters had been having interactions with each other for months and the FMC was already crushing hard. Plus the spice was HOT. A partner with a ribbed 🍆, vibrating fingers and tongue, who does research to find new things to try with you?? Yes please!!
"Love is not what I thought it would be," he whispers. "So I simply didn't recognize it. I'm sorry for that. I'm sorry it took me so long to understand." That's one of my favorite quotes now. The back and forth was stressful because I just wanted them to be happy together but it all worked out in the end! And that epilogue was the perfect ending. Had me tearing up though.
I can't say that I've ever read an android/robot romance before, but I can definitely say that I'm now a fan thanks to Lyonne.
D and Lela were absolutely precious, and I loved their relationship so much. While things moved at a pretty quick pace between the two of them, it doesn't feel very insta-lust/love, and the spark between them felt genuine. Plus the banter and back and forth between D & Lela was fantastic, and my cheeks hurt from smiling so much as how cute they were.
Out of the two, I think D was my favorite. He was just so sweet and attentive, and I loved seeing his personality develop and grow more as the story progressed. Lela was a total BAMF, but I didn't really like how often she doubted herself. & that epilogue 😭😭😭
Overall I really enjoyed Programmed for Love (like I knew I would), and cannot wait for more from Lyonne!
4.5 rounded up I received a copy of this book from author for an honest review. I love seeing authors grow into their own, and this book was a perfect example of that. Lela and D had such a cute and spicy relationship, with them pushing the bounds of acceptable relationships. No one was impressed by Lela’s affection for D because he was considered less than a human man. Seeing D gain more self-respect because of Lela was wonderful. Both characters had some growth both with and separate from each other. The mystery the MCs needed to solve was also interesting.
Best of both worlds being cute and spicy, but once the charm of the premise wears off, gets a tad boring and repetitive.
Human FMC x android MMC, and their relationship is the main focus of this, so it’s definitely a romance with SFISO (sci fi in setting only) (yeah I just made that up)
I think chopping off some of the page count may have helped here, 173 pages (on my iPhone screen) felt too long, and it allowed for unneeded space to fill with repetitive character dialogue, like multiple iterations of the “can an android truly love like a *human*?” conversation.
Besides alien romance, robots/cyborgs are my second favorite “monster”. This absolutely delivered on the spice, the slow descent into love, with a HEA. The epilogue made me cry on the inside, even though it was still sweet.
The back and forth between Lela and D was so heart-wrenching, there were times I almost couldn’t handle it. The spice was pretty immediate but it didn’t feel like instant-lust or insta-love.
I received an ARC of this book and my review is my honest opinions.
I liked this book! It’s a quick read but it carefully packs enough spice and depth into the pages. I loved Lela a lot! She was so relatable and felt like someone you know. D was great too. Just human enough to talk to humans but still android enough to think he couldn’t be capable of love. It was heartbreakingingly sweet how they thought they couldn’t be together but couldn’t stay away from each other lol. I loved it!
Lyonne Riley does it again! I loved the sci-fi components and the mystery running throughout the book, as well as the romance!
I loved watching the relationship between these two develop! While the romance happened rather quickly between them, it didn’t feel like insta-lust given the historical feelings set up between these two. I definitely don’t have any problems with insta-lust/insta-love, but the connection between these two was just so palpable and reasonable given the framework Riley set up that it was just that much more delicious from the start.
I honestly did not know what to expect with an android romance, but D was just so sweet and personable! Watching his personality grow was definitely a perk of this book, and I loved all of his jokes and dirty talk. A character who could have come across as very dull and automated, came across as sweet and loving in the best ways possible.
Lela, like most of Riley’s FMCs, was completely badass! She was smarter than most everyone (if not everyone) else on the freighter, she was fierce, and she stood up for D when others were bullying him. Even though she doubted herself and her abilities a lot, I felt it came across really genuine and in more of an overthinking capacity than a true lack of faith in oneself, so it didn’t annoy me like this trait in FMCs usually does.
The intimate scenes were absolutely fabulous, and I wouldn’t expect anything less from this author! The way that D was able to read and adjust to Lela in the moment DID SOMETHING to me. It’s one thing for a partner to understand how your body works, it’s another for your partner to actually watch and learn your body and instantly adjust as needed. Just another example of Riley creating partners who raise the bar for nonfictional partners.
Also, that epilogue!!! I read at my own risk, I loved it and I almost cried. Perfect ending in every way.
If I were to list any critiques about the book, it would be that I wish Lela’s background and the overall worldbuilding had been expanded upon more. This was definitely a function of the short nature of the book though, and I’m just a greedy girl who wanted more!
Thank you to Lyonne Riley for the opportunity to read this book. The thoughts and opinions expressed above are honest and my own.
I am not crying about an android leave me alone. my heart broke and mended a thousand times over during this short book, and I can not stop thinking about it.
The amount of thought and care put into it is so incredibly visible. The skill of someone being able to flesh out characters, make the plot instresting, do great world building while also having quite a few spicy scenes in only 150ish pages is just astonishing.
Our main characters are so complex and even though we get just a glimps of their life we feel like we know them because it's so easy to relate, especially to our fmc.
There is something so real and strong in Lelas feelings that it translates so well into real life that she feels real. I have found myself in her hope and her knowingly hurting herself even for a little happiness. D is our android who our Lela falls in love with, and I just loved him so much, the innocence in his actions has just made me so emotional.
And can we talk about the incredible epilogue, there was a warning at the beginning of it and I have ignored it, but I loved every second of my little heart just hurting happily. I think the epilogue couldn't have been better I think it was a great choice and an amazing ending which just made me love the whole experience and book more!
This is everything I could've ever wanted from an android romance book. Its simply perfect.
I've had all of Lyonne's books on my TBR for a while because they all sound so interesting. I already had a feeling I would like this, given the premise and all that, but I still hadn't read anything by her so I wasn't sure what to expect exactly. I'm happy to say this book surprised me in many ways and I loved it so much. It's a light read, yet it'll still hurt your heart a little at times. And Lela and D are super adorable together.
I may come back to this, I may not. The writing is not giving what I need it to give and I refuse to force myself through a novella that is not grabbing my attention.
What can I say, Lyonne Riley has completely knocked it out of the park once again with this angsty but tender sci-fi romance novella, ‘Programmed for Love’. I simply adore Lyonne’s writing style and her wonderful characters and I thoroughly enjoyed venturing out of my monster romance comfort bubble to dabble in some sci-fi android romance!
The characters were lovely and even though the story was a novella—so therefore shorter than a traditional novel—the world was evolved enough to capture you, and I easily got swept up in the little nudge of suspense and intrigue of who was sabotaging the ship.
This IS a typical Lyonne Riley romance novella so the spice was AMAZING, as always!! It’s steamy while still being tender and sweet—which is the perfect balance in my eyes and something she captures so beautifully. What I also really loved about this novella in particular was how D learns and experiments with every passing “session” and how eager he is to please her. I won’t spoil anything TOO much, but there was a spicy scene towards the end when Lela’s finally about to “let go” that’s…STUNNING!!!
And a quick note here…the epilogue COMPLETELY destroyed me. Like in the BEST way possible, of course, but I was actually ugly crying at the end with tissues and everything…so take Lyonne’s warning on board before reading it! (there is a pre-warning before the epilogue so you can choose to end the story at the end of continue reading on…the epilogue only adds a little bit on and if you don’t read it, it doesn’t detract anything from the story itself—but I would recommend reading it because it IS beautiful.)
This novella is fairly light on heavy themes and there are only a few content warnings I’ll list below (many of which are added by the author themselves at the beginning of the novella.)
━━ † ━━
⚔️TRIGGER LIST⚔️
— Graphic depictions of sex — Mild violence — Bomb detonation — Life-threatening injury — Death of natural causes (epilogue) — Anal play & anal sex toys — Mentions of porn watching — Semi-public sex
━━ † ━━
‘Programmed for Love’ was a fantastic sci-fi romance novella that explores the relationship between a human who falls hard and fast and the android who doesn’t know quite how to love yet, but can’t stop wanting her. It balances a beautiful romance with an underlying plot of suspense and sabotage that keeps you thoroughly invested. I would highly recommend this novella for anyone who enjoys a little bit of angsty romance, a sweet & thoughtful MMC, steamy spice that’s all about exploratory experimentation, special peen anatomy and sentiments like “you are my preferred person”. 5/5 stars!!!

❗️I received this ARC via sign up and every part of this review is written willingly and genuinely with my own personal feelings/thoughts and is under no conditions or obligations❗️
Omg the epilogue 😭😭😭. Wow. Lyonne has done it again. I absolutely loved D and Lela. A fun steady but quick paced love story with some mystery sprinkled in. Such a fun and heart warming read. The epilogue is bitter sweet but absolutely perfect and lovely in every way. How Lyonne managed to tell a story this amazing and enthralling in only 155 amazes me. A must read and one of my favorite reads!
I thought this was pretty sweet. I wish it had been a bit longer. If we had had a couple chapters in D-084's pov I would have rounded up to 4. I was really bummed we didn't get any chapters in his voice. Overall, I thought things were slightly under developed but still a fun read.
I LOVE Lyonne’s writing, I love the worlds and characters she builds in relatively short stories, I love the romance, I love the fun, and this one was all that and MORE. Firstly, what does this fall under? Like, it’s not a monster romance, it’s not paranormal? Right?!? Is it computer romance? Sci-fi? Welllll whatever non-human sub-genre of romance this falls under I LOVE IT. I did not want this to end. I usually read non-human (?) romance because it’s fun, light-hearted and makes a change, but honestly everything Lyonne writes hits differently. It IS fun and light hearted, but I also take it seriously, I feel invested in the characters and the universes, I want to know what happens next, the smüt is amazing but I care for the story.
And THESE CHARACTERS in this book? LOVE LOVE LOVE. I was wary at first about D being an android, that I wouldn’t be able to enjoy the story, or care for his relationship with Lela - but I was so invested from the get go. I loved the build up between the two of them, I loved the emotional ups and downs of Lela trying to understand whether her android could feel such a complex thing as love. The personalities, the setting, everything just worked so well and I’m so glad I got to ARC read this book.
Honestly, if you’re looking for a book that you want to get lost in, and is under 160 pages, try this!! I also feel if you hadn’t tried non-human romance before, this would be a great place to start.
I’m at a loss for words. How to describe something that made me feel so much in just a little time. The growth that I wasn’t sure would happen that did with D was absolutely heartwarming. I was swept away with the devotion that Lela had for D and what he grew to reciprocate towards her. I can’t comprehend everything I felt and put it into words but that sweet care D gave Lela for her revealing her feelings every time and him thinking he couldn’t have the same feelings for her but respecting her in so ways. It was amazing and I may have cried multiple times because of how beautifully this was written and the soul bonding connection they had together. Definitely don’t read the Epilogue if you want to image perfection afterwards but if you don’t mind as Lyonne said a bittersweet ending then read it, it was peaceful 😌
Separate from all the super emotional moments the spice was immaculate… D know how to lay it down!
I received an ARC from the author for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This was a fun, short read. I've read the author's fantasy books before, and I'm always down for android romance, so I was really glad to see this new release. Lela and D are likeable main characters, and I liked Lela's emotional complexity regarding her choice of work.
Around half of this book is sex, which was expected. The erotic scenes are pretty sexy - the focus on Lela's pleasure is nice, and there is some toy use and creativity in D's anatomy. Also, I'm not sure if his name being D was meant to be a naughty pun, but it's definitely a bit funny in an erotic book. I admit that in some respects D was almost too human-like, which took away some enjoyment from the android story.
Most people probably won't be reading this book for the plot, but that was where I felt it was a bit weaker, and I had Questions. The saboteur was a bit predictable. Lela being so focused on her crush that she can't do her job was a bit annoying at times. And as for D - the author's fantasy books also had racism between humans and non-humans, but it hit differently here, since D literally doesn't have the same rights as the humans on the crew. This was touched upon a little, especially in the epilogue, but it definitely had some uncomfortable implications. Including the fact that he's apparently designed fully functional for sex.
Overall, it's a nice romance/erotica book with a likeable main pairing, with the plot being a little weaker.
I’ve had this book on my TBR for a long time and I’m so glad I finally read it. This is a quick, steamy novella about a woman crushing on the ship’s maintenance android. When they start working together to solve an issue with the ship she realizes that he likes her too. But can androids experience feelings the same way a human can. And if not, does that make a relationship impossible? While this was a fun read there was also quite a bit of depth to it. Which I feel is really hard to do in novellas. I really enjoyed the writing, it was such a nice, smooth read. As the author says, read the epilogue at your own risk, but I thought it was the perfect ending.
When I started reading this story about a human woman falling in love with an android, I was not expecting it to make me cry. But HERE WE ARE. This is one of the SWEETEST romances I’ve read this year, and I loved it so much. 🥹🥹
I absolutely adore Lela and D together. This is my first Android romance, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I should’ve known how good it would be! Lyonne always writes the coziest, SPICIEST, most heartfelt romances, and this one is no different!
This is definitely a quick read, but there’s so much build and growth packed in that it feels like a full length novel. There’s a bit of mystery/suspense mixed in as well.
Programmed for Love comes out on 4/5, and is available for preorder now!! (She also offers the best book boxes on her website, they’re super affordable and come with art prints!)

Thank you so much, Lyonne, for sending me this book for an honest review. 💙
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️,🌶️🌶️🌶️ I swear Lyonne never disappoints with her books. I really enjoyed this book. It was such an easy read, I flew through it. a sci-fi romance with the perfect amount of spice ❤️🔥
The ending was so sweet but the epilogue I did not think it would end like that 😭
This is my first ever android/human read and honestly…WHY AM I KINDA IN LOVE WITH AN ANDROID NOW!? Lela and D-084 had such a sweet, but unconventional relationship and I am so so sad to say goodbye to them.
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC for Programmed for love. This is the first time I read anything by Lyonne Riley.
This book is a great read. The story is easy to get into and the main characters are hard not to get attached to. The storyline is interesting and so is the love story. The book is well paced and never gets boring.
Lyonne's writing style is great, both clear as well as colorful, never distracting. The spicy scenes are *amazing*, very vivid and detailed from Lela's perspective.
The only let down for me was how human D's physique is. I was kinda confused by the purpose of his equipment earlier in the book, I couldn't really grasp why he would have been designed that way. I expected a less human and more interesting physique.
I adore a good android love story, so maybe my standards on this subgenre are really high, but I just wasn't wowed at any point with Programmed For Love.
Maybe it was the repetitious petal picking "He loves me / He loves me not" question about D's ability to love. At times it felt very childish and at other times, like it was to hit a word count.
Our MFC has a Flight response to conflict and constantly iced D out to protect her own emotions (while being a dick to him and lowkey hating herself for doing so but still doing that same thing again and again) before falling into bed with him for makeup sex, again and again. This book kind of read like Groundhog Day but with engineering sabotage and lots of cum.
D was sweet at times but he never really clicked with me. I can tell you all about his ribbed dick and magical vibrating fingers but like... what is his favorite color? What does he do in his spare time (other than research porn for sex position ideas)? I felt like we never learned anything about him above the sheets.
This book is certainly for some, maybe not for others. I'd say if you aren't feeling it by 30%, you won't like the rest of it.
This book is a FANTASTIC example of that. Not all love looks the same, and humanity is more than just what we look like.
Lyonne Riley writes wonderfully diverse characters, but she has this signature *man* that is so soft and so strong. Men with feelings and hearts that don’t sacrifice their masculinity. And they take such pride in being good partners, while also not smothering their significant other.
There is no third act break up or miscommunication between the characters but you do see them struggle and learning how to be together and how to communicate. Plus who doesn’t want a lover who studies your every reaction to make sure they ~love~ you in just the right way.
Lyonne gives you love stories that are short and sweet while still feeling organic. They are the perfect read when you need low angst, plenty of spicy times, and all of the fluffy feelings.
Lyonne’s books just keep getting better and better and BETTER. Are you expecting a robot romance? Good, and I hope you’re ready for so much more.
Lela, human, and D, android, both work on the freighter ship carrying raw materials back to base. She’s been crushing on D for a while but hasn’t made a move because, well, the rest of the ship might make her the laughingstock for hooking up with a robot. These two randomly cross paths but it’s not until something odd, and slightly ominous, pops up in the cargo hold that they finally start working closely together.
And let the romance begin!!! The way these two fall into each other, their mutual attraction (the citrus and spice scent! IYKYK), it’s such a delicious descent to watch unfold. I love how Lela gives in completely to D and D takes the reins, providing Lela with the extra-special, human-men-wish-they-could SPICE.And he watches videos for research to try out later?? YES PLEASE.
Then we also see the other side - where Lela worries about the relationship, what others might think, whether he actually loves her or if it’s simply his programming. Yes, he’s an android but is there something lying deeper under the glowing blue eyes and circuitry?
I LOVED THIS BOOK. It was the perfect balance of emotionally-charged and amazing spice, all tied together with the cargo hold mystery in the background. And that ending!!Warning: the epilogue had me tearing up.
Lyonne has done it again. There isn't a single book of hers that doesn't make me fall completely in love with her characters, and D was no exception. With every species Lyonne writes about, we inevitably fall in love. The relationship between Lela and D is beautiful from the beginning. We see both characters grow, especially D, and how those feelings for Lela develop within the relationship. This story has so much romance, smut, mystery, and a futuristic touch that I must add that the way the world-building was described was executed perfectly. It's my first android romance and I was not disappointed. This story completely enchanted me; the romance is sweet and melts your heart with love for them. The epilogue was beautiful and touched my heart. I would read this book again; it has become one of my favorites.
Lyonne has done it again - she seems to have a knack for writing short and sweet books that leave me feeling happy and introspective. I was not expecting this book to make me cry, but it definitely got me a few times.
While it had its humor and spice, it was also a very heartfelt story of two people falling in love, whether it was socially acceptable or not.
“I thought love would be some sudden strike of realization, like a bullet. But it's not. It builds and grows, until you cannot imagine living without the person you love at your side.”
Thank you so much for letting me read this ARC, Lyonne!
"Love is not what I thought it would be. So I simply didn't recognize it. I'm sorry for that. I'm sorry it took me so long to understand."
I'm not crying. You're crying! I will always be amazed at how Lyonne Riley manages to make me feel so many emotions within a short space of time. Programmed for Love might be a novella, but it absolutely packs a punch while featuring everything from an emotional love story, steamy spice, sci-fi action/drama and even an intriguing mystery! This was my very first sci-fi/android romance so I was unsure what to expect but I was not disappointed in the slightest. The character development and dialogue is incredibly clever and the story felt so complete. Even though the epilogue left me an emotional wreck, it was the best ending for this absolutely wonderful story.
