I think I’m going to have to give this one 3.5 stars, rounded up. It’s got potential, but ultimately, my interest waned the further I read. This is kind of like a Harry Potter meets Percy Jackson story. Tempest finds out she has a very unusual background and that there are others willing to kill her for it. She then moves to a private compound where there are many similar people, and she learns more about where she came from. Add some pining and romance, and you’ve got “A Trace of Something Stranger.”

Now, I’m not a sweeping romance kind of person, but I don’t mind some sprinkled into a story. This one was over the top, for me. I’m paraphrasing, but stuff like “He couldn’t control his protective urges and didn’t know why” just makes me annoyed. You just met!!

I received a copy from NetGalley and Sungrazer Publishing (thank you!), and I am publishing this review voluntarily.

19/03/24 — I first met Allison through Josephine Angelini’s Star Squad street team and we became fast friends, bonding over our mutual bad memory and chaos. I’m really excited for her to be publishing her debut novel, and I can’t wait to read it. Wishing you every success, Allison!!

**Book Review: A Trace of Something Stranger by Allison Giordano**

Rating: ★★★★☆

Allison Giordano's "A Trace of Something Stranger" is a compelling journey into the unknown that captivates readers with its unique blend of mystery and preternatural elements. Giordano has crafted a narrative that is both intriguing, thought-provoking, and even suspenseful at times making it a standout in the genre.

The story follows protagonist Tempest, who stumbles upon a series of inexplicable events after attending a short summer camp. As she delves deeper into the preternatural secrets, she uncovers layers of hidden truths that challenge her understanding of reality. Tempests world is flipped upside down when she uncovers the truth about herself, her parents, and the people from Versi High.

Giordano's ability to weave suspense with moments of genuine human connection is one of the novel's greatest strengths.

One of the highlights of the book is its richly developed characters. Tempest is a relatable and well-rounded protagonist whose journey of self-discovery is both compelling and inspiring. The supporting characters, each with their own quirks and backstories, add depth to the narrative and keep the reader engaged.

Giordano’s writing style is another standout feature. Her descriptive prose vividly brings to life the eerie/intriguing atmosphere of the town, making it almost a character in its own right. It really feels like the atmosphere of Forks from Twilight. The pacing is well-balanced, with just the right amount of tension to keep readers on the edge of their seats without feeling overwhelmed. (And trust me.. she had me gripping my chair a few times from the suspense! Ha-Ha)

However, the novel isn't without its flaws. I’ve noticed a few grammatical and punctuation errors here and there. I would be more than happy to provide the publisher/author with these errors upon request. I’ve also noticed a few unnecessary run on detail, almost too detailed; along with some “wandering” paragraphs.

Despite these minor issues, "A Trace of Something Stranger" is a thoroughly enjoyable read that will appeal to fans of mystery and preternatural fiction. Giordano has proven herself to be a talented storyteller with a knack for creating immersive and engaging worlds.

In conclusion, "A Trace of Something Stranger" is a strong addition to Allison Giordano's repertoire. It’s a book that entertains and intrigues, leaving readers eagerly anticipating her next work. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a gripping and atmospheric read.

I would like to thank the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read and honestly review an advanced reader’s copy of this book.

Do you miss those 2010s YA books? Are you nostalgic for things like the Mortal Instruments, Twilight, The Uglies, Percy Jackson? This YA fantasy might hit that spot for you.

I think personally, I’ve grown out of this now. The romance was too sudden and intense for me to truly enjoy it, but I think that’s because I’m a slow burn lover at heart. While I enjoyed the characters, I struggled with the prose at times. (It went on and on at times, and honestly probably needs slightly tighter editing.)

Overall, a fun and very fast read!

Really enjoyed this book! Allison writes beautifully and has created a complex world that I cannot wait to see her develop more. The only thing I wished for was a bit more interaction between Jet and Tempest, otherwise - I really liked the story. Cannot wait to see what comes next!!

◦ I've received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ◦

⮞ 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 ⮜
Tempest - She's very sweet in the story and quite considerate, until, she quite snaps and tbh, I totally got it. Way too many secrets were around her - it would've drove me crazy too. She's a character that definitely has lots of place to grow and makes you want to be there to see it happen.
Jet - I felt he knew what he wanted, but in the process he kind of broke hearts and didn't really liked that. I also didn't really liked some scenes with him and him acting towards Tempest. But this is a YA story, the characters in the book are round 17/18 so is the behavior is quite normal, and I quite missed this indecisiveness in the story tbh.

⮞ 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝-𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 ⮜
A nicely urban fantasy! The world has no idea of the secret world that happens around them, the secret academia, and the whole world of shifters. Loved it. It was nostalgic.

⮞ 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝/𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝 ⮜
I loved the nostalgic feeling the story left me with. The YA books from the 2009 will always have a spot in my heart because they made the teenager me fall in love with fantasy, romantasy and so much more. I didn't really liked the romance in the story. I felt the story to be such a great book if everything was staying on the friend level without any type of romance - in this case Tempest falling for Jet in my opinion happened wayyyyy too fast. In general I'm alright with fast-forward romance, but this story was so sweet and definitely didn't needed the added romance. The world-building was captivating, loved the secret society and the Percy Jackson feeling to it. I'm definitely interested reading more books by Allison in the future.

⮞ 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐞/TW ⮜
The story has romance but is very clean, like it has 0 pepper flames. However, there are some harder subjects, like the loss of parents, fighting scenes, blood loss and such but nothing that happened in the story triggered me.

This YA fantasy tells the story of Tempest, who tragically lost her parents 4 years ago in unforeseen circumstances, and is thrown into the world of the preternatural magic and shapeshifters. Tempest comes face to face with danger when a rogue band of werewolves comes after her and she begins to uncover the mysteries of her own heritage.

I was honoured to have been selected to be an ARC reader by Allison Giordano and could not wait to dive into this fantasy world, and I was certainly not disappointed!

Allison paints a brilliant picture within this book with the imagery in her writing. This book gave me all the dark academia vibes that I love, with dark twisting forests, a hidden school for magic, and secrets to be unravelled. I particularly thought the magic system within this story was very interesting, both the natural biology of the world and magic were woven together in this book and I really liked how it made it seem like such a natural branch of nature and the people in it. This story also does a great job of exploring grief and the mental health issues that can follow, Tempest is a well layered character and I loved her curiosity throughout the book.

For all the romance lovers out there, this book scratches that itch with a slow burn romance knitted throughout the story and I look forward to seeing how the potential develops throughout the series in the future. I’d definitely love to see and learn more about the other characters within this story as it goes on too as I grew fondly of many of the characters within this book.

A Trace of Something Stranger is an absolutely brilliant debut novel and will be released on the 3rd of September 2024, if you’re a lover of fantasy, dark academia, slow burn romances, and the starts of a found family then keep your eye out for this one!

I would like to thank Allison for choosing me to be one of her ARC readers, I really loved this book and can’t wait to see what you do next with this series!

This cover! Look at this cover! How insanely beautiful is this cover? This book was nowhere on my radar, but I scrolled through Netgalley and the cover immediately grabbed my attention. I had to request a copy. Especially because the summary promised me a supernatural, political and interesting story. Luckily the author granted my request and last week it was finally time to dive in. I was really curious about what was waiting for me!

The book started really promising. The first chapters were a nice mix of mystery, questions and a few answers. The author does an amazing job introducing the characters to us, coming up with a way for them to meet and showing us that something strange is going on. I also liked the writing style. Although the book was an easy and quick read, the writing really fitted the characters and the kind of story being told.

However, while the start was interesting and gripping, the rest of the book lost a little of its steam. Partly because the story was quite predictable. Normally that's not much of an issue for me, but in this case the story really followed the classical pattern of these kinds of stories without adding much of its own. I was also disappointed that quite a lot of discoveries and lore was not eventually leading somewhere. I assume it comes in the sequel, because I'm pretty sure there is one.

I think the part that disappointed me the most, though, was the romance. The first few chapters of the story are really promising, there is chemistry between these characters. However, they're not really spending much time together during the story. They don't have many conversations. Our heroine is doing all the exciting stuff, like learning how to fight, with someone else. Which is fine, but not what I expected from this book.

So, the book is good, it just wasn't what I had expected after the first chapters. I'll see when the sequel comes out whether I'll check it out or not.

3.5 stars rounded up

Thank you NetGalley for sending me an advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review.

This book had so much potential. The storyline was a little basic, and it did have a slow start, but the ending was disappointing. I felt like Giordano created an amazing world, but didn’t try as hard with the storyline. I noticed multiple typos and confusing patches. I am, however, going to continue this series and I really hope the storyline improves. And the cover is so well done, it’s so pretty!

*4.5, AMAZING. WOW I have no words. The fact that this is a debut novel is absolutely incredible. The world building in this book had me hooked right from the start. It is so detailed but is easy to understand and follow. I love the found family and the characters in this book. The magic school in the book was giving a college version of Hogwarts and I am OBSESSED. 10000% recommend to everyone.

ps if these does not become a series I will probably cry

This book was really good! I applied for the arc ages ago, so I had kinda forgot what it was about and just went in blind so I was surprised, and I really enjoyed it. To me it gives Harry Potter meets Percy Jackson, but age up the characters to 17-18 years old.

First, the world building was really intriguing. It was fleshed out well, I followed it, did not find it confusing, and we were fed good amounts of information at a time. I liked the characters. Our FMC was "different" without being annoying. I had so much empathy for her and what she was going thru and felt. I liked the MMC, he was equal parts swoon worthy and annoying in his protectiveness. But we kinda love him for it anyway.

I found a few of the plot lines predictable. I actually was convinced that the friend was gonna be a traitor. But there was also a few twists I didn't see coming. I think at the end the Don escapes? That aspect was kinda glazed over quickly and I had to reread to confirm. I have a million questions about what is gonna happen next and cannot wait for the next book!

Such a fun YA book I would’ve eaten this up in middle school. Lots of world building which I know other people love but I’m always dying to get to the action. Can see this being similar to ACOTAR where the next book is 10/10 and am disappointed I can’t keep reading.

Thank you to Allison Giordano for allowing me to receive an ARC of this book. I loved that the world building wasn’t extremely slow like some fantasy books can be. Giordano gave a sprinkle of action with the world building to keep my attention and wanting more. I was reeled in from the beginning. You know a book is good when you can visualize each scene as if you’re watching a movie. Can’t wait to see where the world of shapeshifting goes next!

A Trace of Something Stranger will be available on September 3rd!

If I didn’t have a toddler (and a broken AC), I would have finished this book in one day. I was hooked from the beginning. If you love dark academia, slow burn romances, legends, and shapeshifters, this is for you.

The magical system and world building is great. I love that the author tells you just enough to leave you with questions. The way she ties in legends to the magical systems is so cool! The characters were easy to grow attached to. They are funny and the FMC has so much depth to her character. Although there is romance, it did not feel like the prime focus. I enjoyed this book so much, and can’t wait to see what else Allison has in store for us. She left me wanting so much more, in a good way.

Thank you so much for allowing me to be on this ARC team. It was an absolute pleasure getting to read this book early. I am a mood reader, so I read a LOT of books at once. I focused mostly on this book purely because it pulled me right in.

read if you like:
- YA fantasy
- dual POV
- Camp Halfblood (The Lightning Thief) except it's a University
- shapeshifters
- dark academia vibes
- slow burn
- found family
- New England setting
- journey of self/heritage discovery
- mental health

misc thoughts:
- sometimes the pacing felt off
- League of Protectors really reminded me of the Umbrella Academy Commission
- the Full Moon Knights really reminded me of the 3 evil vampires from the first Twilight movie

quotes:
"Just because someone isn't looking for something doesn't mean you should leave it to be found. Knowledge is power, Tempest. It's our job to protect the balance of power."

Her mere existence is breaking all the rules that I've revered, and I have to believe that this is the reason why I feel as connected to her as I do.

I didn't exactly want this, and yet, at my core, I know that this is who I am. Maybe this is why I never felt like I was real in my life before. Maybe this was always the answer.

Her beauty is not an obvious thing, but it's undeniable. There's something about her that is unassuming, as if she is meant to get lost in a crowd or fade into shadows, and yet I find myself incapable of looking anywhere but at her when she's around.

thank you so much Allison Giordano for giving me the opportunity to read your work!!

I think I’m going to give this 3.5 don’t get me wrong it was good , but I feel like it could’ve been better.

I have soo many questions like Who was the don & did he wind up dying in the barn?

Why were tempest parents murdered & what exactly is tempest she has to be more than one thing because I didn’t quite understand that ending of her being that when she did damage to the barn ..

Unless there’s a book two in the works that’ll answer my questions , I felt like I didn’t quite understand..

Anyways I really enjoyed this story and when she lost Andre ohh my heart broke for her & I was mad because I had grown to like him as her new best friend 😭

I would’ve liked to see a bit more interactions between Jet & Tempest even if he was still pushing her away because he wants to make sure the threat is truly gone.

I loved the mystery this book had, but I didn’t like how it wasn’t mentioned again or lead up to anything .. again might be mentioned in book two who knows 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

But other than that this was a fast paced read I enjoyed it and I can’t wait to see if there’s a book two coming because I need answers 🫠🫠🤣🤣🫶🏻

Thank you to NetGalley, Allison Giordano, and the publishers for allowing me access to the e-Arc.

I really enjoyed all the vibes that this book gave. It starts with a summer camp where she meets a guy that she is drawn to. It has dark an academia and magical school vibes for the rest of the book. There are a lot of secrets that will be revealed. We follow our FMC Tempest who lost her parents years ago. Her aunt took her in and has protected her from harm. There is a slow burn romance. I thought this book was very well done.

I would definitely recommend it!

The nostalgia that hit me reading this book. It gave me some twilight vibes which I appreciated. It was a fun and addicting read. I will say prepare to have your heart broken a bit.

Tempest as a main character is a force of nature while her love interest is her perfect half.

This books gives slowburn/instaattraction, invisible connection, strangers to friends to lovers, shapeshifting, and magic.

3.5 Stars (rounding up coz it's a debut author)

One Liner: Good but not a standalone

Seventeen-year-old Tempest is just surviving as the days blend into one another. She had been grieving her parents’ death and struggling with it. However, it soon turns out that she has a lot more to worry about when the truth of her parents’ identities is revealed. Some people out there want to kill Tempest.

Jet (19) is a young officer of the League of Protectors (LOP), an organization that acts as a force to keep supernatural creatures from being harmed by humans and vice versa. His life ambition has been to join the higher ranks of LOP. When his talents uncover Tempest, he realizes the danger is much darker and more ruthless than expected.

The story comes in the first-person POVs of Tempest and Jet.

My Thoughts:

I don’t remember where I saw it mentioned this was first in the series but I’m glad I didn’t forget that point. The book ends in a cliffhanger in many ways. I prefer a standalone series, so this is a little disappointing but at least I knew this would be a series.

The dual POV is done well. I liked that both voices are easy to distinguish and neatly labeled at the beginning of each chapter. The story progresses with the POV shift, so the pacing is steady as well.

This is an urban fantasy about shape-shifters of all kinds who have their own universities, monarchy, police system, and obviously, extremists who want the purebloods to retain supremacy.

The fantasy elements belong to different religions (this is clearly mentioned by the characters). So, there is a naga, a mayura (peacock), dogs, cats, panthers, snails, magi, succubus, etc. I was quite tickled by the choice of making the Indian Deepti a nerdy succubus. I hope she has a meaty role in the coming books.

The main characters are pretty decent. Tempest’s arc is better and feels more aligned with her backstory. Jet is a younger version of the brooding dark and handsome hero with intense feelings and a tragedy in his past. I liked him enough but felt the protective instincts came out a little too early.

There is some romance (clean enough with just one kiss) and pining on both sides. It may seem slow burn in a way but not really. The saving grace is that it doesn’t dominate the plot. Tempest spends more time with the side characters than the MMC, so the angst is more internal and feels a bit too much (they even really know each other).

I liked some of the side characters. Some weren’t developed yet, so can’t say much. The setting is well done. My favorite is the magic library. I need a membership!

While a couple of questions get answered, we are left with many more. This can easily be a trilogy (I hope it won’t drag on to six or eight books). However, please do not bring love triangles. I’ll handle the rest but no triangles and quadrangles!

To summarize, A Trace of Something Stranger is an intriguing YA fantasy and is well done for what seems to be a debut novel. Another round of editing would have tightened it up a bit. I look forward to the next book.

Thank you, NetGalley, Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op, and Sungrazer Publishing, for eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

ARC Review

A beautifully written story which hooked me from the first chapter!

The story follows a dual POV of both Tempest and Jet.
Following the death of her parents Tempest has been struggling with her grief and no longer feels like she fits in. A chance encounter at a residential camp reveals a whole new preternatural world to her and exposes that not all her feelings of disassociation were down to her grief.
As a trainee protection officer, tasked with keeping the preternatural world secret from humans, Jet's world is turned upside down from the same encounter.

I loved this book from the get go and the dual POV is really well done. Such wonderful character development and story line which took me through the whole range of emotions. I really appreciated the exploration of the characters mental health and emotions throughout the story. Can't wait to find out how the story ends in the sequel.

I think this book would suit anyone who likes YA fantasy & specifically paranormal fiction exploring shifters, other worldly beings etc.

Triggers: death/death of parents
Romance tropes: Slow burn
0/5 🌶️ rating

Favourite Quotes:
The obvious answer to my illness is the same as it always is: anxiety.

Isaac lumbers away from me and back towards his friends with his tail between his legs - figuratively, thank the Universe.

I wish, for the millionth time since starting high school, that I possessed the ability to act normally in social situations. But no, show me a hot guy by a quiet lake and my instinct is to act like an absolute freak.

"Just because someone isn't looking for something doesn't mean you should leave it to be found. Knowledge is power, Tempest. It's our job to protect the balance of power."

"She's cute for an abomination."

My bad nights are plagued by racing thoughts. My worst nights are plagued by silence.

Tempest wrinkles her nose but there's amusement in her eyes. "So, he was nerd-famous. I bet he loved that."

It seems so novel for a dad to be reading the newspaper at breakfast, but I suppose that social media and cable television is out of the question for sharing news about the preternatural.

"You're at Versi now, chica. You need to get used to the unexpected."

"I'm not of the belief that there are coincidences in this world. The Universe has a plan for all of us. All we can do is rise to the occasion."

"I'm supposed to believe that you would find after-school study sessions fun?" Andre stammers back with a gasp, dramatically clutching at his heart. "You doubt my scholastic prowess!" he accuses, his tone dripping with melodrama.

"Great Universe," I say, shaking my head. I'm watching Tempest with fresh eyes. "I can't believe I didn't see it before." "See what?" she demands. That fire that I've grown accustomed to is kindling again. "You're a nerd."

"The whole preternatural thing is complicated enough without bringing science fiction into it. Please tell me we can't time travel because then I'm really done."

"All I've ever wanted is to be a hero, Tempest. Thank you for letting me be yours."

Grief is always devastating, but there's something particularly horrifying about it happening when it's not meant to. Death is something that should only come for the old and the sickly, and pain should only ever be felt by those who have inflicted it.

"A Trace of Something Stranger" is a good YA book, it's well written for the genre and has all the necessary clichés to make it interesting.

It introduces us to a society of shape-shifters in which our protagonist, Tempest, finds herself involved, learning about its rules, monarchy, and police.

My main problem with this book is that, for almost half of the way through, it still feels like it has no story, but rather it's setting up the world. And that's because it's not a stand alone but part of a saga. I wish it was stated in the blurb or the cover to accommodate expectations.

Regarding the book itself, I couldn't connect with the story, maybe because it's the beginning of something bigger. The pace was dragging even if things were happening on page.
The characters are fine, they pretty much meet the expectations for YA protagonists, including the insta love trope.

This feel like early Cassandra Clare (as a compliment), I can see that a younger audience will love it, for me didn't work, I already read several books like this.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A must-read dual POV in a semi-supernatural world with a relatable human journey.

Tempest's (FMC, 17) life shatters when Jet Delancey (MMC, 18), an officer protecting a hidden supernatural realm, discloses that her parents were murderers. Now targeted by a ruthless faction within this secret world, Tempest must navigate betrayal and danger unlike anything she imagined. Jet, driven by a lifelong desire to defend his shapeshifter community, sees Tempest as both a mission and a mystery. Uncovering dark truths, Jet realizes the gravest peril may come from those closest to him.

AToSS balances the mystical with the profoundly human world we know. It’s an engaging dual POV, Tempest vs. Jet, that deepens the story’s impact. Tempest’s unreliable narration provides a compelling sense of mystery and internal conflict, while Jet’s experienced perspective grounds the fantastical elements in a more accessible reality.

Tempest stands out as a remarkably relatable protagonist. Her journey through grief, mental illness, and the uncertainty of her future beyond high school resonates deeply. As she grapples with her struggles and begins to uncover hidden truths, her growth is both touching and inspiring. The narrative deftly portrays her transition from isolation to a place where she can embrace her potential, making her journey one of both personal and emotional significance.

The preternatural world is nothing short of mesmerizing. It’s a richly detailed universe where shapeshifters are merely the beginning. The intricate culture of various beings, drawn from both familiar and unique mythologies, adds layers of intrigue to the story. The way these beings are integrated into the plot, complete with their own histories and roles within a hidden society, feels fresh and imaginative.

One of the novel’s strengths lies in its plausibility. The depiction of the preternatural government and protective agencies is skillfully woven into the narrative, making the fantastical elements feel just within reach of reality. This blend of the believable and the extraordinary enhances the story’s immersive quality, allowing readers to imagine a world where these elements could feasibly exist just beyond the surface of our own.

Overall, AToSS is a captivating read that combines a deeply personal journey with a richly constructed supernatural world. It’s a story that not only entertains but also offers a thoughtful exploration of identity, growth, and the hidden dimensions of our world. I really hope to see additional books in a series in the future!

A Trace of Something Stranger is a fun YA fantasy written in dual POV of Tempest and Jet, navigating a school for shapeshifters and other preternatural teens. This is book 1 of a series, so be prepared to be left with lots of emotions and intrigue for book 2!

There’s magic, mystery, a bit of romance, and so much more. The characters are relatable and loveable, and Allison has a true talent for writing realistic dialogue. I found myself chuckling and crying throughout the book. The themes of grief and found family were portrayed in a nuanced way and added so much depth to this book.

A couple of my favourite quotes:

Although cultural myths and magic are blended in this fantasy with diverse characters respectfully, I would like to know how Indigenous Diné readers feel about some fantasy elements in this book.

Following the cliffhanger ending, there is so much more to explore in this world, and I can’t wait to see how these characters grow together. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series, but no pressure!

This is a great debut and I’m proud of Allison. Thank you for sending me an e-ARC & congratulations again, Allison Giordano on your debut novel!! All opinions are my own.

A TRACE OF SOMETHING STRANGER - ALLISON GIORDANO

As someone completely new to NetGalley, I was delighted to be granted access to A Trace of Something Stranger, which immediately caught my attention due to its beautiful cover and description. And I'm very happy to say that my expectations were NOT disappointed. Here's a quick synopsis:

Tempest thought losing her parents would be the worst thing to ever happen to her - until Jet, a young officer with an enforcement agency in charge of protecting a supernatural world Tempest had no idea existed, reveals to her that her parents were actual murderers, and that a fanatical splinter group of this secret world Jet has sworn to protect won’t rest until Tempest is dead.

Yes, the plot is pretty high stakes and there are some real moments of tension when I was truly anxious for the characters. I'm not always the biggest fan of dual POVs, but I felt like alternating between Tempest and Jet helped to move the story forward effectively, as well as helped to explore their personal journeys.

Giordano's writing is descriptive and clear, where her worldbuilding is not only memorable but also rich enough to keep the reader interested throughout. It definitely feels like A Trace of Something Stranger is the start of a much bigger storyline, which I'm looking forward to following in the future.

There was one area of the plot that I felt was lacking, where I would have loved to hear more about Tempest's actual classes and learnings once the story felt like it was heading into a dark academia route. Instead, the storyline very much focuses on the League of Protectors. I think adding a little more about Tempest's experiences of being thrown into this new world and schooling would've created a little more balance to the plot.

Would I recommend it? Yes! It's an excellent start to what feels like a promising young adult series, and the shapeshifting alone makes this a fascinating read.

Review score: 4/5

"A Trace of Something Stranger" by Allison Giordano is a captivating and immersive read that will leave you spellbound from start to finish. Giordano's masterful storytelling weaves an intricate tapestry of mystery, suspense, and the supernatural that grips the reader's imagination.

TRIGGER WARNING: Death of parents, death of a young person, violence

The protagonist, Tempest, is a complex and relatable character whose journey of self-discovery is both heartbreaking and empowering. As she unravels the mysteries surrounding her family's past and the loss of her parents, the narrative takes unexpected twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat and glued to the pages of this book. Giordano's vivid descriptions transport you into the atmospheric small-town setting, making you feel as if you're right there alongside Tempest.

What truly sets this book apart is the way it seamlessly blends elements of the paranormal with the emotional depth of the characters. The exploration of themes like grief, identity, and the power of family ties and deep friendships during life's most difficult times is both poignant and thought-provoking. "I'm certainly not a stranger to how quickly life can change, but it's almost alarming how fast all of this is starting to feel normal. A strange normal, but normal nonetheless. For a moment there it just felt like I was on my way to grab food with a friend before class, as if everything I have ever known is not being rewritten."

The overall reading experience is immensely satisfying - it is not a book you can easily put down! The plot twist is intense and at times had me in tears, especially as one character proclaims, "All I've ever wanted is to be a hero, Tempest. Thank you for letting me be yours."

"A Trace of Something Stranger" is a must-read for fans of young adult fantasy fiction with a supernatural twist. Giordano has crafted a truly spellbinding tale that will linger in your mind long after the final page. Looking forward to book two!
