Miranda Smith is a long-standing editor of information books for both children and adults. She has a particular interest in the field of natural history and has written books and articles for children on the subject, including the encyclopedic Living Earth (for Dorling Kindersley).
A Dinosaur A Day is a hardcover book with 365 dinosaurs for every day of the year. With the colourful illustrations and short paragraphs, children are informed about dinosaurs and their habitat, whether they are herbivores, carnivores or omnivores as well as their weight and length. The book starts off with some interesting facts about the rise of dinosaurs and after which follows every day of the year's dinosaur with a date and illustration.
The book ends with a section explaining how dinosaurs became extinct. A pronunciation guide is included at the back of the book which children and adults alike will find useful when reading this book. A glossary is also included to help children understand different terms used in the descriptions of dinosaurs. This book is the perfect guide for children who are fascinated by dinosaurs and will especially find it interesting which dinosaurs are mentioned on their birthdays or important days in their lives. My son is gripped by this book, he is a dinosaur fanatic and having this book allows him to learn more about these prehistoric reptiles
---- This book is interesting, I found the part about how the dinosaurs died interesting. They said birds are the survivors of the dinosaurs and that is my favourite part. I liked the illustrations of the dinosaurs, the colours and the full-page pictures. The information helped me to understand dinosaurs more. My favourite dinosaur is a Euoplocephalus (ewe-oh-plo-sef-ah-luss). Thank you Jonathan Ball Publishers for gifting me this book, I love dinosaurs and this is my favourite book. - Ethan Visagie, age 9 years.
I bought this for my dino mad 8 year old nephew but, obviously, had to read it first. It's gorgeously illustrated and has so much information about different dinosaurs. Worth a read if you come across it
A dinosaur a day is a beautiful illustrated book about dinosaurs, which can be read one for each day of the year. You get facts such as what period they are from, length, where they are found, and much more. The illustrations show how they look like, what color they were, and them in nature. I believe young readers who love dinosaurs as much as 25-year-old me will absolutely love this!
A DINOSAUR A DAY features 365 dinosaurs for children to learn about and do just as the title suggests. While it may be intriguing to consume this book quicker, there's something magical about getting to learn about a new dinosaur each day. It's a great way to stimulate a child's mind daily and to inspire a love of learning. There are even estimated weights and heights on each one that I was fascinated by because this is all from fossils.
The book opens up with a section about how dinosaurs lived and ended. Then in the back of the book, there's a pronunciation guide, glossary, and index. The index is a great way for children to return to their favorites easily. The illustrations are stunning with their realistic detailing and I love how the inside of the covers are lined with dinosaurs. I also really like how each dinosaur is dated so you won't ever lose your place.
Final Verdict: A DINOSAUR A DAY is perfect for dinosaur lovers of all ages. While it's intended for children aged six and older, I also enjoyed this book as an adult with my eight year old. It's fascinating and has been a great daily ritual for us to enjoy together.
This large, attractive digest of dinosaurs is just what a fervent fan needs. The book neatly categorizes dinosaurs by features, such as smallest, largest, flying, beaked, etc, and gives each month of the year a category or two. Brief front matter explains dinosaurs’ beginnings and what we know about them; a page of back matter describes their end and which animals survived. There’s a pronunciation guide, a glossary and an index.
Information is presented in short paragraphs with realistic-seeming artwork. Each dino gets a short write up, plus a chart with the relevant period, family, diet, length and weight, and where it was found. Some dinosaurs get a full two page spread and others appear on a page with several others. The information is stated simply, emphasizing interesting features. This is a nice addition to non fiction sections.
Bought to read with my 4 year old. We read about four pages a day every few days. Both my boys enjoyed looking up their birthday dinosaurs. Mine was disappointing, so kind of half-arsed bird thing, was hoping for Baryonx!
The illustrations are excellent and the descriptions good (if by nature of the fact that there are 365 dinosaurs in here they are going to get a little repetitive!). It's fun whenever you get to a well know dinosaur, and my boys know about 100!
Only criticism is that some of the stats look a bit wonky, with similar dinosaurs having wildly divergent weights. Perhaps this was just people guessing rather than expert estimations!
Overall though a great book which we both enjoyed!
To be honest I did not read this whole book because it is absolutely massive and unfortunately I have too many books going right now to give it the justice it deserves. I will definitely read it at a future time though when I can really study it. The information is laid out in a really fun way, like a DK book. The art is just gorgeous and it's a fun format to have "a dinosaur a day" for the whole year. I wish I could buy it, but it's a little high. I borrowed it from my library. This would be a great tool for teachers or parents. Little kids would struggle, but I bet it would be a good read a loud book and they would probably really like the art work. Older kids would have a blast reading this book I think.
As a kid I was obsessed with dinosaurs, the Natural History Museum dinosaur exhibit was my go to place with my dad. I can’t say the obsession has diminished to be honest!
This book has a dinosaur for every day of the year. It is a beautifully illustrated hardback book. I kept it for a few days before I showed it to my own kids as I needed to have time to fully enjoy it before the inevitable happened … it is now their book! They sat together for ages reading it and looking at the pictures! The facts are brilliant and will keep Dino lovers (of all ages) entertained for hours!
This resource book presents at least 365 different dinosaurs and their descriptions -- one for every day of the year. With additional information about the rise and demise of dinosaurs, the book presents categorized types of dinosaurs and includes key factual information in each description (period, family, diet, length, weight, finds). There are illustrated drawings for each one presented. The book includes a pronunciation guide and an index. This isa great resource book to have on hand for the dinosaur fanatic.
as a dinosaur lover and nerd as a kid, I felt like I tapped into my inner child when I read this. There’s so many species I’ve never heard of. This was fun with beautiful illustrations and definitely worth getting the dinosaur lover in your life no matter their age!
Dinosaur lovers will enjoy this book which includes 365 dinosaurs - one a day starting on January 1st. This huge tome includes great illustrations and for each dinosaur: period, family, diet, length, weight, and where to find. Recommended for individual use, not a library. For ages 5-12.
Do you have plans for 2024? Plenty of people make resolutions, some they stick with, others they give up on. It's the intention that counts so can I suggest a resolution, a habit to get into? Reading, everyday.
I know you might be wondering if this is possible, well with A Dinosaur A Day I think you might find yourself wondering why you never did this before and I think I can guarantee the daily read, the information gathering will be lots of fun!
