May Khanavan's life was the very essence of ordinary, consumed only by the typical concerns of a high school senior—final exams, prom, and graduation. However, a twist of fate changes everything when, on her eighteenth birthday, she encounters a man boldly claiming to be the infamous Pharaoh Akhenatem of Egypt. In the annals of history, Pharaoh Akhenatem was renowned for his heart of stone and iron fisted rule. Until, that is, an ill-fated confrontation with a powerful and vengeful sorcerer leads to a curse that would cast him into the mists of time, hurtling him thousands of years into the future, straight into the life of May.Cryptic visions and the wisdom of departed loved ones set into motion a chain of events that, alongside May’s compassion and patience, unveil an unexpected love as the two souls discover the intricacies of the concept of evil and that everyone has their own story.
There are so many things I have to say about this book!!
The first one is that this book is the perfect isekai/time travel. I adored the characters and plot, and I honestly was never bothered by either, which is extremely rare for me. In the past, I’ve been so let down by this genre, and yet this had every scene and trope I could wish for.
I think the cultural and historical contextualization of the mc’s was extremely well approached—as in, there were no awkward moments that seemed to have either character wishing to change the other’s culture (which is somehow all too common in this genre…). As well, the ethical dilemma of Egyptology and excavation seems to be well breached throughout the book, and there were no moments where I had to put into question the author’s morals😭 (keep in mind, since I also read parts from the original version, the effort to modernize and improve the story from minimal offences were also greatly appreciated).
And, on a different note, I have to say that NOTHING could have prepared me for how lovable the characters would be. I thought Atem had an acceptable redemption arc and thoroughly enjoyed his growth from beginning to end. On the other hand, I cannot say enough about how much I adore May. Did she sometimes lack foresight and loads of tact? Yes. But is she also literally me??!?? YES! So, if in that way I am biased, sue me😵
Anyway, overall, I just wanted to fully encapsulate my thoughts because this book deserves more hype than it has. Despite the errors, all which could be expected from a former recreational project, I genuinely think this book is great, and a positive contribution to the romance genre. I will always appreciate a book featuring POC and time travel, so this took the cake
