Faith Popcorn has been called "America's most highly regarded trends forecaster" ( Newsday ). She first identified the concepts of Cocooning, Female Think and Icon Toppling; predicted the fall of New Coke; and has helped create and market many of America's most successful new products. Her astonishingly accurate predictions are an invaluable asset to the American business world, and Clicking, which sold over 100,000 copies in hardcover, appeared on bestseller lists ranging from the New York Times and USA Today to the Chicago Tribune and Business Week. Now Popcorn, coauthor Lys Marigold, and Popcorn's company, BrainReserve, share even more of their remarkable insights about how we will conduct our businesses and live our lives in the future. Clicking is about positioning one's business, and one's self, to be poised to take the fullest advantage of upcoming trends. Loaded with telling anecdotes and inspiring examples, packed with ideas, products and people who have successfully mastered trends, or "clicked," this up-to-the minute revised report (including a major trend not identified in the hardcover) reveals the shape of the future.
I'd love to have a job as a trends forecaster. It's easy, as long as you're good at coming up with catchy phrases. It's like being a phone psychic with an ad background. I firmly believe I could do this every bit as well as the author, if only I had the extremely catchy name and persona. Alas. Here, I'll give you two trends: ebooks and luxury books. As long as readers are light and convenient and relatively cheap, women in particular, who buy most of the books, will snap them up to hide their trashy bodice-ripping tastes. And, as more people move to ebooks, giving beautiful books-as-objects will become more popular, so lots of pretties.
i agree with many of her ideas, and her writing style kept me interested through what chapters i did read, there were some that i didnt have to read for class and didnt feel pertained to any of my business ideas, but i am keeping it for myself incase i want to refresh my memory or get new ideas in the future. definitely worth the read.
Not sure what ever happened to Faith Popcorn, but for a while she was a bit of a media sensation with her method of explaining how to market to various niches (mostly ones she created through her research.) She wasn't all that wrong about many of the trends going on at the time, and she does write about them in an interesting way. Unfortunately, the material is very dated now.
This is not a really new book but the ideas contained therein certainly bear a lot of thought. I often go back to this book for a refresher of ideas. Well written and very readable.
Was very interesting at the time with thought provoking forecasts. Would be interesting to revisit and see how these worked out, maybe an updated e-version?
