Mette Hansdatter is a fictionalized account of my maternal great grandmother's life, a life overshadowed by tragedy. Amidst the tapestry of love and loss, births and deaths, and the haunting allure of America, she grapples with the paradox of bringing children into a world where their fate seems uncertain. In her fervent prayers, she implores God for mercy, pleading to spare her from the anguish of losing more children. Mette's steadfast belief in the Lutheran faith gives her solace, yet the ancient beliefs linger in her soul. This is an imagining of my great grandmother’s life with some real and some invented characters. Set in Sogn, Norway, Mette’s journey unfolds from her humble beginnings as a dairymaid to her demise.
This book was a very special one to read as it is about my great great great grandma Mette in rural Norway. This story was so beautifully written and yet it ripped my heart out! It was really amazing to think about my family tree while reading this and makes my past trip to Norway just that more surreal being right around the corner from where Mette and her family lived without even knowing it!
